Good afternoon everyone. Today I just wanted to share a few lovely lights I have recently come across. As you all know by now, I have a huge love for brass, bronze and timber combos, so there is no surprise that quite a few on the lamps in todays post are exactly that, hehehe. The first one is my personal favourite at the moment and I'm desperate to use it in one of my up-coming projects... lets just hope my clients fall in love with it as much as I have. I love this kids room so much. Colourful, simple, and sophisticated... The simple furniture and colour palette would work great for both sexes (even though there's a bit of pink!) ( A Great Look With Delft Tiles )

I first came across Dutch Delft Tiles whilst freelancing at a design company called Central Design Studio, working on an amazing restaurant called Union Jacks, Winchester, UK, owned by Jamie Oliver.

Hand painted Delft Tiles have been popular since the Sixteenth Century, and many of the designs offered today have changed little since then! Delftware, or Delft pottery, denotes blue and white pottery made in and around Delft in the Netherlands.

I just love this image above of an old dairy work room which shows Delft Tiles used to depict a classic dairy farming scene. Back in the 16th and 17th Century Delft tiles where used a lot in this format, to create beautiful hand painted scenes, often using the countryside as a main subject matter.

Today these beautiful hand painted blue and white tiles are still used in a tradition way, such as country kitchens, bakery shops and fireplace surrounds.

I personally would love to see more of these tiles used in a more contemporary surrounding to bring them into the 21st Century. I love how they have been used as a headboard in the first image... what a great idea :)

I have put together a 'Delft Look' Board, to show how to create a look for your kitchen. I have mixed the tiles with some traditional elements and relatively contemporary pieces to show you how great these can work with different design elements and materials.

Hey all.... I've finally got my own domain... YIPEE!!!!!

This is a huge milestone for what wilson wants and I'm so happy that I now have my very own unique blog address!
As a lot of you know, I started my blog as a place to store images, interiors, products, lighting, etc, all in one place which would be easy for me to locate all my research. Over the last year and a half, what wilson wants has become my baby and I realised very quickly that other appreciated my posts, and with it, my somewhat unique writing style ;)
I just want to thank you all for joining me on this journey so far, and I look forward to hearing more of your great comments which always puts a smile on my face; you guys have all made this a fantastic year and a half! Equally I have been deeply inspired by all my fellow bloggers out there over the years, who I can now consider my blog family!

( City Home with a Contemporary Country Feel )

I would describe myself as a bit of a city, but I love the cosiness of country living. This home below is a wonderful example of how to achieve a comfortable yet contemporary, country style in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life.
Lucky for somebody, this Swedish two-story penthouse in the middle of Sweden, is for sale... I wish I was the lucky buyer!!! Renovated by Marianne Aaron Architect this stunning home boasts a glamorous, elegant, yet rustic style. The dark timber feature are timelessly fused with very contemporary furnishes and clean lines.
The large living room is perfect, especially with the fireplace niche in the sidewall for storage of firewood. The painted black windows are a great contrast with the brown floor, and beautiful in wide boards.

I was charmed by the kitchen, with marble table and bench with cushions in rustic linen.
In the attic the roof structure was kept exposed, with brick walls were painted white and the floor, unlike the lower floor was coated with beautiful ceramic tiles.
I like the harmony in decorating, neutrality, lighting and cosy result. I would actually go as far as saying that this home is just perfect... When can I move in? ;)

Love how these thin picture frames are just sat comfortably on this concrete shelf at low level.

As most of you know, I have a huge passion for photography, but hardly ever display my work. 99.9% of my own photography is on my laptop, or on various photo-sharing web-sites! Well not any more... This weekend I am determined to buy some really lovely frames and create my very own and very personal Gallery Wall... Exciting :)
I have searched the Internet all week trying to get inspiration for my Gallery Wall, and what best way to hang my photos. This post is also a great opportunity to share my finding with you all.
By the way... Now that I have my inspiration... I don't know which style is my favourite! Please help me decide. Which one is your favourite?

The snow fell all weekend here in London, which was so exciting. I always feel like such a kid when it snows; snow ball fights, snow man building, and amazing photography opportunities.
 As Winter is still well and truly here and here to stay for a while, I thought this post would be very appropriate.  As soon as I saw this Colorado home I fell in love with it. Designed by Studio Sofield, this Aspen getaway 'raises alpine style to a whole new level'.  
The beautiful design of this contemporary home sits seamlessly into its natural mountainous surroundings with ease whilst still meeting the design brief of a modern / traditional home set out by the clients. (The clients being a husband and wife with very different design views). 
“I think of myself as a behaviorist,” Sofield says. “My design for this home or any home, really emerges from an understanding of who the clients are and how they prefer to live. Because I’ve worked with this couple for more than two decades, we had a pretty good head start on the process.”
I feel the design team at Studio Sofield have blended the clients wishes for both modern and traditional, perfectly through the modern structural detailing i.e. the large double height living space, and stunning traditional materials and finishes i.e. tone walls, natural timber panelling and beautiful patterned carpets etc.
 “The goal is always balance, in weight, mass, texture, colour, everything,” Sofield notes. “It’s the same for the architecture and the interiors. I tend to judge furniture more on shape than pedigree. The casual, collaged feel of the mix here seems right for this kind of house.”
I couldn't agree more... Design is all about balance and this is one of those perfect examples.

As a Interior Architect, one of the first things I was taught, alongside creating forms within a building (space planning), was using light! Light is so so important to any design. Light creates personality, character and can change the mood or a space instantly!
Most natural lighting enters a space through our windows casting certain shadows depending on where the sun is in the sky. This post is about optimising light through the use of light entering a space from above. Some of the spaces featured in this post use the ceiling forms as well as natural light to create fantastic shadows through the space, which is what this design element is all about.
Companies such as VELUX® have a great range of Skylight windows including VELUX roof windows, VELUX flat roof windows, and instant window balconies called CABRIO® Balcony, as well as great window treatments such as blinds etc which you can see over at veluxblindsdirect.co.uk.

I just love how the light cascades down through the unusual skylight in the two images above. In the first of the two images, the form of the skylight together with the angled walls, create great tones and interesting geometric patterns... It's really lovely!

This skylight is fab. I love the way it really pulls you through the space through the hidden skylight which shines onto the steps and through into the next room.

Skylights even work in traditional and industrial spaces too... Just look at the interior above. This beautiful iron door continues up into the ceiling allowing more light to enter this great space. It works really well as the material and style for the door, window and skylight for a perfect relationship with each other and their surrounding. Structure and internal deco working in perfect harmony. I hope you like the images.

It's so easy to take nature for grated and not spend time really appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. Every now and then I make an effort to escape city living and take time out to enjoy the countryside, and it's here I can, not only clear my mind, but really take inspiration from the forms surrounding me.

Meet the Designer... Andy Lampard of 'The House With'

Hey guys and gals. This is the first post in my New Feature 'Meet the Designer'. Once a month I will be interviewing a designer who carries a unique and extremely creative presence in all that they do.
This weeks designer is Andy Lampard of 'The House With' - A fantastic designer and good friend.
Andy started his e-mail back to me with this... which I thought was well funny and so so true, hehehe:

"Hi Stuart, thanks for this great opportunity.It’s lovely to put one of our conversations in print for once.How many ‘wise words’ have we shared and then blurred away into the bottom of a philosophers pint!"

Q. Can you tell me about 'The House With' and your role within the company?

A. Thehousewith is us! Primarily we are friends and in work we simply have a great deal of respect for each other. We are an independent design consultancy, we believe in the artisanal craft of design and its appropriate creation. Along with our growing list of collaborators we provide a really extensive breadth of design ability from conceptual architectural design, visualisation to illustration and web development. We do this as individual elements or as a full process.

We decided around two years ago to join forces, 6 companies now form the 6 partners of the brand- each of us specialising in a particular element of the design process. My role is mainly within the research, creative and narrative start to our projects, this is my specialism and publically where I will hold responsibility. Within the studio however we do all muck in and help each other out throughout the entire process. We work within the idea of project leads – one of us is always responsible for the entire project and how it runs. For each element the lead will then take on a tailor made team of people from our partners and collaborators to complete the works to the highest level possible – each element being cared for with vested interested by a specialist. This means that although my primary role is in the story at the beginning I do often see a project all the way through with the team, that’s a really important aspect to all of us.

The story to me is the essence of a great design, you have to have purpose and meaning when creating otherwise you are just ticking boxes. I think as soon as you walk into a place you can feel a designs integrity, if it has been loved and cared for, if the elements around and within it talk and really for me I can only find this sort of integrity in the facts that surround a project and their pure representation – this is what I would class as the story.

Q. What kind of jobs/clients do you work on/with?

A. All kinds of projects, generally if we get on well with the prospective client and feel that we are inspired to be involved we will. We have worked on many different things from Christmas window displays at Selfridges to Private beach residence in Kenya.

Thehousewith… media as I mentioned works to create visuals, animations, graphics, illustrations, web design and branding to any client.

Thehousewith… design is all about the full design package and covers commercial residential design, private residential, bar, restaurant, spa and fitness, exhibition and retail design incorporating everything from concept architectural design through to the website and web marketing.

We work with large and small, commercial, charity, private clients, developers, operators, hoteliers, chefs and restaurant managers.

As I said if we like the idea and people we are open to opportunities and find new ideas fascinating.

A great one we have just started working with is the Think.eat.drink membership, take a look it’s a great idea!

Q. How, when and why did you decide to start up your own company?

A. When I realised that it was actually possible to do it. I set up Zopsigog Ltd with a view to provide an outsourcing resource to design company’s for concept films and visualisation. Then along with a couple of the other partners of thehousewith… we have teamed up and run thehousewith… media - a complete media outsourcing resource. In conjunction with setting up the media side we also established thehousewith… design, which is where we do all of our design projects. Zopsigog enabled me to embark, with all of the other partners on developing thehousewith… brand as it stands today. Design is tough to get into unless you have clients so having our outsourcing companies as a foundation at the beginning was essential to us.
We are still a very modestly sized group but we get excited about going to work in the morning and each of us loves what we do - most of the time we have to be torn away from our desks to do anything else.

Q. Where does your inspiration come from for each project?

A. Research- all of our projects are solely based on the combination of three elements. 1. The site, 2. The Client / clientele 3. The Product. It sounds simple because it is, but we don’t like to get lost in the fashionable trend of our own personal preference.

Q. What are the most important principles in your design work?

A. Love your work and you will never work again. The governing principle to me is to be honest and the rest will follow.

Q. Can you describe your creative process?

A. Why? What? How? When?

Specifically in that order. These are our Hallmarks at thehousewith… which together with a process / order of events is what ties us together and enables us to adapt to any situation with absolutely no house style.

Firstly you must question, find out exactly what you are dealing with. Then you can formulate a concept of fact. Non subjective, void of personal opinion and therefore a solid foundation from which you can be informed and elaborate. Once laid out you must learn to communicate in a tailored manner, so that the information projected if fully understood, mis-understandings and cross wired preconceptions are the downfall of all great design intent.

Finally you must adapt, building is a wild creature and throws challenges at even the most prepared. If you have strong foundations laid a solution to an onsite issue is always be possible if your mind is open. (If you are interested in this we have just completed our case study brochure which illustrates with two contrasting projects how this collaborated process works).

Q. What is your next big project?

A. We have some great opportunities opening up to us at the moment, it feels like 2013 may be a very formative year for us. We are really excited about the completion of a couple of big projects for us, Project Diani and Virginia Lodge, as well as a few very interesting London based projects on the horizon.More detail on the new I cannot give right now… my lips are sealed – you know how I like to keep you in suspenders!

If you blow on your hand lips pursed it will feel cold, try again with your mouth open… hot? That’s how the combustion engine works, how mosques created the world’s first air conditioning and how we started our thinking for the naturally ventilated architecture within Project Diani.

+ Your favourite Interior Designer:

William Morris, his influences within interiors and the styling elements of design as a single medium have a human quality that only the passionately obsessed can create. I have always loved his simplicity of reason and admired his fundamental effect over the perception of the creative industry as a series of interlinked skilled craftsmanship’s. With the rise of digital white out we have more pride for singularly important items of furniture – Hand crafted folk styles make you feel good.

+ Your favourite item of furniture you own:

For Christmas this year I was given the most beautiful taxidermy barn owl. Its smaller than I imagined but is the single softest and most mesmerising item in my home. I am from quite a scientific / biological background and I have always had a bit of an obsession with taxidermy, the only problem is I am now quite conscious that my hallway doesn’t turn into a scene from Farthing wood.

+ What book are you currently reading:

Zinio! I’ve never been great with reading – magazines and picture books are more my thing… The Nobrow volumes are a party to the whimsical and creative eye.

+ Your favourite Quote:

‘Design is only ever an opinion, so relax and listen’. A friend of my granddad, who was a perfume bottle designer, once said that to me when I was a kid and got I upset that he didn’t like a design I done for my dream house.

+ Your favourite design blog:

+ Your dream home:

Not the one I showed my granddads friend! I’ve looked at it since and structurally it is ridiculous! Seriously, I live in it now but as I change so will it, tomorrow it may simply be a tent – I believe for a home to be truly a home and not just a house it has to fully embody the mind that inhabits it and the mind is a wonderfully transient thing.

( Timber treats - Part 2 )

I came across this today and had to share it with you all as a follow up to this mornings 'timber treats' post.
This space has to be in my top 5 dream offices to work in. Digital ad agency, Ubiquitous didn't bother getting the designers in to create their Manchester based office... No, co-founders Andy Buchan and Neil Boote designed and sourced everything themselves. All I can say to these guys is... WOW! That is an achievement to be very very proud of.
Using stained walnut, white tiles, cool graphics and industrial finishes gives this space plenty of character, which is complimented with a minimalistic approach yet very cosy atmosphere. This interior will still be very cool in years to come with is clever use of vintage accents and timeless style.

I always find that the excessive use of wood in interiors can often result in the space looking like a alpine chalet. But, if done correctly can look fabulous! Here are a few images I have put together, where the designer has achieved a great balance with the use of timber. In most of there images, the designer has used timber cladding to decoratively highlight key features and pieces of furniture.

I want to start this post by taking the opportunity to say a huge thank you to all my family, friends, blog followers and blog friends.

'What Wilson Wants' started as a private reference hub for me to compile my thoughts and design inspirations. It has now become a great little social community of people I can call friends.

Thank you! It is you that has made What Wilson Wants as popular as it is and ultimately made me so passionate about writing each and every post. I adore design and sharing my inspirations with all of you, and I am so pleased that I have such a dedicated following. Again... Thank you all again for being part of what I love and staying with me.

What will this year bring in the design world? I think this year is going to be another cool year for great interior and furniture:

COLOURS:
Look out for some great mixture of strong colours working alongside some beautiful muted tones.
I am hoping colour is back on the key trend chart this year. I am confident that some of the great 1950's tone are making their way into 2013 with soft pink, mint green and baby grey/blue. These combined with deep peach and strong coral accents will truly awaken the senses.

MATERIALS:
I have always been a huge lover of Gold/Brass and Walnut, as most of you know, but this year I have a strong feeling that white Marbles with Golds and Brass will make a strong appearance in 2013. Marbles such as Carrera and Calacatta, with inlays of Gold or Brass... Yum :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Wow... I can't believe that it's 2013 already. Where did 2012 go! I hope you all had a fantastic 2012 and lets all hope 2013 brings us all happiness, health and of course lots of fun and creativity.
I want to start the new year off as I mean to go on... with GREAT designs and GREAT inspirations!

Lets start here! Below is a beautiful, fun and very interesting furniture range by some great friends of mine from the 'The House With'. THE HOUSE WITH… is a uniquely unconventional design studio who are a house of individual design companies each a specialist in their chosen field, coming together under the same roof to form a simple and responsive creative solution. Andy Lampard, the founder of 'The House With' will be the first designer to be interviewed on 'What Wilson Wants' new monthly FEATURE 'Meet the Designer' which starts next week... So keep your eyes out for that... it's going to be a great post.

I have had Instagram on my phone for well over a year now and I am still absolutely addicted to it. It is such a great phone app to have, if not the best app to have. Where ever I am, and whatever I see, I can take a picture instantly and make it look like I am a professional photographer... I just can't stop using it :)

Since downloading Instagram all those many months ago, I have also become more aware of my followers and the people I follow on it... I am just amazed at all the beautiful pictures that are posted each day. I could spend hours looking through them all. I'm totally addicted!!! hehehe.

Woohoo... It's nearly Christmas... my favourite time of year. Expect a lot of festive posts over the next 4 weeks. Keep warm, stay cozy and enjoy the month ahead... I can't wait :)
