Allegheny County, City of Pittsburgh Sharing Light Up Night Celebrations

EVENT:	Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and City of Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto will share in each other’s Light Up Night celebrations when both officials participate in the individual lightings of the county and city’s Christmas trees. The city’s celebration will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will feature music from the Salvation Army Ensemble and the Harmoneyes Chorus, cookies from the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and coffee compliments of Starbucks. Guests will have the opportunity to donate new and gently used toys as well as non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army Food & Toy Drive. Ornaments created by students attending City of Pittsburgh public, private, parochial and charter schools will decorate the city’s Christmas tree throughout the holiday season. Celebrations will continue until 12 noon. For more information, visit: http://pittsburghpa.gov/citiparks/release?id=5333. Beginning at 11:15 a.m., Mayor Peduto and County Executive Fitzgerald will take the stage to lead the countdown to illuminate the city’s Christmas tree. The county’s celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will kick off with County Executive Fitzgerald and Mayor Peduto taking the stage in the Courthouse Courtyard. The officials will lead the countdown to illuminate the county’s Christmas tree, as well as the Courthouse and its tower. Ornaments from the county’s annual ornament contest will also be hung on the tree. This year’s winning ornaments were created by the Mt. Lebanon and North Fayette Volunteer Fire Departments. Following the lighting, the South Fayette High School Choir will perform on stage until 12:15 p.m. and will be followed by a performance by singer-songwriter and novelist Bill Deasy until 12:45 p.m. Guests will also enjoy cookies courtesy of the Pittsburgh Technical Institute’s Culinary Program, hot cocoa and eggnog from Colteryahn Dairy and can receive information about the winter activities in the county’s parks. Guests will also have the opportunity to donate a new toy to the Department of Human Services’ Holiday Project, or a canned good to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Celebrations and music will continue until 1:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh’s popularity is on the rise and while some areas are benefiting, many of our neighborhoods suffer abandonment and violence, our population and infrastructure are aging, and climate change will bring new challenges. How can we create a resilient city that is safe and most livable for everyone?

What does a Resilient Pittsburgh look like?

We know strengthening education, addressing neighborhood violence and investing in infrastructure are things that make the city a better place for everyone who calls it home. Tell us how we can improve the daily reality of living in Pittsburgh and help communities prepare for the future and reduce the risks of disasters.

The Resilient Pittsburgh Deliberative Forums are meant to give Pittsburgh residents a space to learn in more detail about what local government and partners are already doing and to discuss possible solutions with other residents. We’ll talk about the chronic stresses that weaken Pittsburgh and the acute shocks that threaten the city. The goal of the meetings is to identify strategies that can empower residents and invest in our future as a city.

This free event will be held downtown at the Department of Human Services on 1 Smithfield Street, hosted by University of Pittsburgh and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers on March 30th from 6-9pm. Fun and engaging experiments will be offered focusing on empowering young Hispanics for students in grades K-12. Bilingual informational sessions will be held throughout the event for both parents and students explaining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-related careers. These sessions will discuss the process of enrolling in college including information about financial aid, the application process, and more. We will have light refreshments.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will present El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico as part of the 4th annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival being held June 20-22, 2014 in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s downtown Cultural District. The free festival consists of three days of jazz and jazz-influenced musical performances on outdoor stages and attracts more than 20,000 attendees from around the country. This year’s performance will feature one of the oldest and best-known salsa bands in the world, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. The performance is sponsored by ImaginePittsburgh.com.

El Centro de Atención Primaria del Children’s Hospital de Pittsburgh ofrece los servicios de una Higienista Dental para pacientes de 1 a 7 años de edad. Cita previa y seguro médico son necesarios. Las citas se pueden hacer llamando al412-692-6000.

Representantes de la Asociación Dental Hispana de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Pittsburgh asisten a nuestras clínicas gratuitas en la Clínica Birmingham. Ellos proveen servicios de prevención y cuidado dental a niños y adultos. No se necesita cita previa ni seguro médico.

CLINICA DE ADOLESCENTES EN ESPANOL

La División de Medicina de Adolescentes y el Programa Salud Para Niños del Children's Hospital de Pittsburgh ofrece servicios médicos generales para adolescentes en español. Estos servicios incluyen exámenes físicos, consultas medicas por enfermedad, salud reproductiva (excepto control del embarazo y visitas prenatales), prevención y tratamiento de enfermedades de transmisión sexual y tratamiento de asuntos comunes en adolescentes como prevención de tabaquismo, uso de substancias psicoactivas y problemas del comportamiento. Estos servicios serán ofrecidos a pacientes que tengan seguro medico y hayan seleccionado al CHP Adolescent Medicine Division como su medico (PCP).

Servicios confidenciales están disponibles para jóvenes hombres y mujeres menores de 22 años de edad que requieran tratamiento relacionado a salud reproductiva incluyendo planificación familiar y citologías (PAP smears) así como tratamiento de de enfermedades de transmisión sexual, independientemente de el tener o no seguro de salud o de la posibilidad de pagar por los servicios,
