Messmer wins Regional Baseball game

The Bishop's Baseball team beat Milwaukee School of Languages 8 to 1 in the first round regional baseball game on May 27, 2009. The team will now advance to the regional semi-final game at Milwaukee Lutheran. Quinton Gill '09 pitched a no-hitter and was supported by outstanding team defense. Messmer has not won a regional baseball game in over 20 years.

Friendship with Waukesha West continues

Messmer High School's National Honor Society hosted its 3rd annual spaghetti dinner on May 7, 2009 to welcome home Waukesha West High School's Academic Decathlon team from the national competition in California where they earned 2nd place. The relationship between the two schools began three years ago when Messmer helped the cash strapped team raise much needed funds to attend the national competition in Hawaii. Waukesha West has won the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon competition for seven years straight.

Messmer wins business plan competition

The Messmer High School Business Club competed in the Young Entrepreneurial Scholars (YES)Business Plan Competition on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Daniels-Mardak Boys and Girls Club.The Messmer students created a customized clothing company called Randominez. After countless hours developing the business plan, the students were rewarded for their hard work by winning the competition. The team won a plaque and a $250 donation to the club. Xavier Johnson earned a $200 scholarship for his leadership role in the club.The members of the business club are; Xavier Johnson, Mateo Martinez, Yalonda Johnson, Tiashona Hazelwood, Cierra Childs and Adan Duran with faculty members Chad Hofmann and Steve Andris serving as club advisors.

Students collect food for House of Peace

On Saturday, April 4, 2009 Messmer students and staff participated in a special scavenger hunt to gather food items for the House of Peace. Sixteen Messmer High School students wehn door-to-door to collect much needed items to restock the shelves at the House of Peace, a Capuchin ministry partner with Messmer Catholic Schools.The students reached over 300 homes in an hour and they were pleasantly surprised at the kindness and generosity shown by the donors. Special thanks to faculty members for coordinating this service project. Faculty leaders include: Sarah Clendening and her husband, Brian, Jamie Kramer, Aleda Kitzman, David Price, Sr. Barbara Goertz, Corey Mehlos, Julie Morrison and Chris Neinhaus.

Messmer preparing future scientists

This year's SMART team, an extra-curricular program run by MSOE's Center for Biological Modeling, designed a model of the B7-2 protein which is important in regulating the body's immune system response to foreign substances. On April 17, 2009 two of the team members, Carolina Herrera adn Lilian Rios will travel to New Orleans to present their work to American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists. The third team member is Edna Blackman.

Catholic Urban Academies boys' basketball team finishes third in Padre Serra tournament

St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic Urban Academies boys' basketball teams placed third in the prestigious Padre Serra basketball tournament. The team defeated Holy Apostles of New Berlin 43-18 on Sunday, March 23, 2009 at Mount Mary College. Seventh grader, Jonathan Carson, was named to the Padre Serra All-Tournament team while Messmer Prepartory Catholic School was narrowly defeated by St. John the Baptist of Plymouth in the third round of competition.

St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic Urban Academies boys' basketball teams have advanced to the quarter final round of the prestigious Padre Serra basketball tournament. The team will play St. Roman at 8:45 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2009 at Mount Mary College.

Marquis Starks saw his life changed by an institution that's reinventing itself. When he was in a central city middle school, his mother sent him to a youth program run by the House of Peace and that led him to something else linked to the Capuchin Franciscan religious order-Messmer High School.

Former Messmer student turns tragedy into triumph

In January 2006, Marquis Hines was an assistant boys basketball coach at Milwaukee Vincent, a man with a future as bright as the fire blazing in his belly. Then came change, a calling, an unexpected challenge, and Hines' world was altered drastically. It didn't reverse direction as much as re-materialize in a parallel universe.

Capitol Drive, 8th Annual Golf Outing to be held Monday, June 15, 2009

The 8th Annual Golf Benefit will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee. The cost is $135 per golfer and includes lunch and dinner. Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner Set for Sunday, March 22, 2009

Sunday, March 22, 2009 is the date for the annual Messmer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner at Serb Hall in Milwaukee. The event will begin with cocktails at 5:00 pm and dinner at 6:00 pm. This year's inductees include Fred Krema '46, Tom Orlando '60 and Sanjay Adell '96. In addition, the athletes of the 30s and 40s will be honored. Catholic Knights President, Bill O'Toole, to celebrate Catholic Schools Week at St. Rose

Bill O'Toole, president and CEO of Catholic Knights, will celebrate Catholic Schools Week at St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic Urban Academies on January 29, 2009. O'Toole will join 4-year-old kindergarten students in a special reading of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein to honor the Catholic Schools Week theme of celebrating service. The reading will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Rose site located at 514 North 31st Street in Milwaukee.

Brother Bob Smith served as the keynote speaker at the 18th annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial prayer service held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on January 19, 2009.

Our Lady of Guadalupe honored

Students, faculty and staff celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe this past December at St. Rose and St. Martin de Porres. The Virgin of Guadalupe is an important figure to Mexican Catholics and plays a significant role for the hundreds of latino students who attend Messmer Catholic Schools.

More Churches, families transferring holiday spending to the poor

At Messmer High School, where sophomore Crystal Robinson's family lost its home in a fire, fellow students, faculty, volunteers and their families and friends made sure that, after they moved into their new house, they had plenty of groceries, money for bills and an abundance of Christmas gifts - all elegantly wrapped and ribboned - to open on Christmas morning.

Messmer Grad Writes Christmas Book

Greg Borowski, Messmer Class of 1985, has completed his third book, a collection of six heartwarming Christmas stories. The book, A Christmas Wish, is a follow up to his award-winning book The Christmas Heart, published in 2005. Borowski is also the author of First and Long, the story of the groundbreaking Messmer-Shorewood football partnership.

Messmer Grad appears in UWM ad

Brad Hopgood, a 2005 Messmer High School graduate,was recently featured in a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee advertisement. Brad is a Junior majoring in Electrical Engineering and minoring in Spanish at UWM. He is the first recipient of the C.G. Schmidt Constructionand Faith Technologies scholarships at Messmer High School.

St. Rose Dean of Students Involved in Urban Fellows

Jennifer Morris set up educational classes during her four years as a museum curator, but she could not quite picture a life that revolved around the classroom. The Urban Education Fellows Program, an alternative teaching certification program, not only helped Morris change careers, but also prepared her to change the lives of students in the central city.

Students Lead Workshop at Archdiocesan Liturgy Day

Messmer High School and Marquette University High School students led a workshop called "Youth Friendly Liturgy" at the Archdiocesan Liturgy Day, co-sponsored by the Federation for Diocesan Liturgical Commissions at the Wyndham Hotel and Convention Center in Milwaukee on October 18, 2008.

Messmer High School Names New Basketball Coach

Jim Datka brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to Messmer. Datka is a 1988 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College and a native of Milwaukee. He most recently served as Associate Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at St. Francis College in New York from 2005-July, 2008. Datka has also held coaching positions as Head Coach at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 2000- 2003 and at the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, from 1994-2000.

Catholic Urban Academies Upgrade

To address urgent building needs at St. Leo, it was determined to temporarily relocate its faculty and students to St. Rose, its long-term partner in education, for the 2008-09 school year while the search process continues.
