Crawford County Special Olympics Participated in Summer Games at Penn State Competition June 4-7, 2014. The athletes participated in Athletics, Aquatics, Basketball and Bowling events.

All athletes had completed a minimum of eight practices over the season. Currently Special Olympics in Crawford County offers ten Olympic type sports for registered athletes to participate over the course of a year. Penn State summer games is the final competition for bowling, golf, aquatics and track and field.

At the summer games athletes attend opening and closing exercises similar to the World Olympics. They have a time for Healthy Athlete Initiatives and a dance. Athletes enjoy the fellowship as well as the accomplishment of competing out of their own county. We in Crawford County are thankful to our faithful and new sponsors who provide donations or after a fundraiser donate proceeds to pay for transportation, meals and uniforms. All races will take place in Woodcock Lake Park, starting and finishing in the beach area parking lot. Race routes will be mainly on paved surfaces and some groomed trails. The 10K run and 5K run/walk will be chipped timed events. Awards will be given to overall finisher, as well as age groups awards for timed events. All participants will be eligible for prize drawings.

Who was Danny Zirkle? Danny was one of the very first participants in Special Olympics which began in Crawford County in 1974. During that time, Danny earned more than 100 medals and ribbons in athletics and aquatics. He participated in many local, sectional and State Competitions and looked forward to traveling throughout the state competing. In 2008 while in Philadelphia, he was awarded a special trophy for his sportsmanship, which led to his induction into the Special Olympic Hall of Fame.
Danny had an outgoing personality and made friends very easily. An unselfish person, he would go to great lengths to help anyone. He gave encouragement and helpful hints to all athletes during trainings and competitions. Danny exemplified the ‘spirit’ of Special Olympics. He truly cared about his fellow athletes and winning was second to participation.

Danny Zirkle Spirit Award
This award is presented to a Crawford County Special Olympic Athlete who over the past year demonstrated a willingness to assist his/her fellow athletes in the following areas: standing broad jump, 50 or 100 meter walk or run; softball throw; turbo jav; or wheelchair events. Assistance could mean any or all of the following: giving encouragement, be a partner when participating in any athletic events; and show pride and enthusiasm for participating in the Track and Field meet.

2012 Sheetz Spirit Award Winner Cody Hubert

Cody Hubert was the The Sheetz Family Award of Excellence recipient. The award was created to capture the great sporting moments that distinguish our athletes at the Summer Games. The award recognizes the athlete whose determination and effort can only be understood by the power of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and inspire greatness. The award distinguishes the athlete who may not win, but whose courage, sportsmanship, effort and determination is award winning.

38th Annual Track and Field Meet 2012

Special Olympics Pennsylvania Crawford County held its 38^th annual Track and Field meet May 9 at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. Over 370 Athletes participated in the event. Heather Clancy Young, CEO of the Meadville Area Federal Credit Union was the emcee for the event. The first event of the day was the parade of athletes. Classrooms and groups lined up with their group and marched to the front of the grandstand. Amy Swonger, Meadville Area Federal Credit Union was the emcee and led the group in the national anthem. Explosion of Sound provided Patriotic music while each of the schools and agencies marched in to Opening Exercises. Mike Wilfong and Bill Schaulis carried the torch and lit Olympic cauldron. Monique Copley a student athlete from the Crawford schools led the group in the Athlete Oath – “Let me win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.”

After Opening exercises each participant began their first competition event. They could run or walk 50 or 100 meters. Throw a softball or Turbo Jav for distance, or perform the Standing Long Jump. Each venue was organized by volunteers from numerous agencies and local businesses. They could also participate in several fun activities like a Frisbee throw or bean bag throw and everyone loves to participate in Olympic Village where carnival like games and fun was set up and run by Thurston House staff, students, and the Peer Mentoring group. The event would not have run so smoothly without support from local tool and die shops, schools, agencies and businesses that came out to help make the day special. Nutrition Inc, and Mc Donalds provided lunch items for the 370 athletes.

All coaches and management team members are volunteers and also must follow Special Olympics Pennsylvania guidelines.

This 38^th year each banner received an award for the Theme of “Olympic Spirit.” School classrooms and agencies made banners to brighten the day for Crawford County Special Olympics athletes and spectators. Randy Gorske Executive Director of The Arc, Crawford County welcomed the group, presented the special awards and declared the games be open.

This year is the first year we had a have new award The Spirit Award in memory of Danny Zirkle. Danny participated in many local, sectional and State competitions. He looked forward to traveling throughout the state competing. In 2008, he was awarded a special trophy for his sportsmanship at Fall Festival, which lead to his induction into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame later that year. Danny had an outgoing personality and made friends easily. He would go to great lengths to help anyone. He gave encouragement and helpful hints to all athletes during trainings and competitions. Danny exemplified the “spirit” of Special Olympics. Our Spirit Award winner for 2012 has been a longtime participant of Crawford County Special Olympics track and field day as well as Floor Hockey. He participated in 50m and 100m walk, and throws the softball or turbo jav. He always cheers for everyone competing with him and tries his best in all his events. He is always recruiting athletes and volunteers to join Special Olympics, and also spends his free time helping raise money for Special Olympics every year. The winner of the 2012 Spirit Award was Josh Davis.

A second award was given to a long time volunteer and supporter of Crawford County Special Olympics. Without help of many students, businesses, community groups, teachers and direct support staff in Crawford County, we would not be able to offer the athletic competition that was set up for the meet. Debbie Gifford has been a strong force behind Crawford County Special Olympics and our Olympic Village for the past thirty years. Debbie is employed by Penncrest School District as the Director of Thurston House. Every year she gathers together the fun games and prizes the athletes love to play. We at Crawford County Special Olympics truly appreciate this effort and Thank Debbie for her years of dedication and enthusiasm for Crawford County Special Olympics.

A special announcement was in time for Wednesday’s event. Bill Shaulis was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch into the Stadium in Korea for 2013 World games. Bill is our long distance runner who has also qualified for National Games in the past.

The sports offered in Crawford County are bocce ball, volleyball, bowling, floor hockey, aquatics, basketball, long distance running or walking and athletics. Crawford County has one working Global messenger. She is available to speak to groups about Special Olympics.

Fall and winter newsletters are sent out to registered athletes and at Track and Field the program is also a newsletter. We have a website for you to learn more about upcoming events. www.sopacc.org

July 11 7pm there is a meet and greet scheduled to try to recruit more volunteers for the Crawford County Management Team. There is need for Coaches, assistant coaches and a new manager, Track and field coordinator, and Public Relations coordinator. The current management team is trying to strengthen the team so there will be rotating replacements and more input from athletes and community members. We hope you will save July 11 and attend this information session. The meeting will be at The Arc of Crawford County 222 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

2012 fall sports will be starting July 24 @ 6pm in The Arc Community Room. It is this meeting where rules and practice times are shared. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend. Athletes must have a current physical and register via the answering machine 337-5918 to participate.

The 2014 Neil Sneeringer Memorial rally is being planed now for July 25-27, 2014.
The last weekend in July is always a great time for the athletes and participants in the Neil Sneeringer rally. Every year the event committee donates $2000 to $3000 to Crawford County Special Olympics. (Photo above) The athletes and management team appreciate the support of the event. Sponsors from Crawford and Venango County were very generous to provide the brochures, flyers, food,and prizes for the event. Thank you to all sponsors, volunteers and participants!

40th Annual Track and Field Meet May 2014

Special Olympics of Crawford County 40^th annual Track and Field meet was a fun day of competition and reunion of friends from different schools and graduates who are returning to compete as adults. Special Olympics is open to all registered athletes with intellectual or developmental disabilities who want to participate in Olympic Type events. It was begun in 1968 by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. It continues today world wide with more than 3.1 million athletes training and competing in more than 170 countries and more than 750,000 volunteers and 300,000 coaches. Crawford County has approximately 400 registered athletes practicing and competing in 10 sports. The Theme of the day was 40 Years of Champions and the parade of athletes with banners showing that theme was colorful. Schools and agencies from Crawford, Venango, Clarion and Erie County were announced by Athlete and assistant emcee Cody Hubert of Titusville. The groups marched in to the music of Explosion of Sound the pep rally band from Meadville Area High School. Samantha Christianson of Meadville Area Federal Credit Union and Cody Hubert of Titusville were the emcees. Carol Caler, manager of Crawford County Special Olympics welcomed the group. Laura Smith and Lainey Brancato sang the Star Spangled Banner. Jamie Sterling carried the American Flag and Trip Bailey carried the torch to light the Olympic Cauldron. Satchi Miller led the Athletes in the oath to “Let me Win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt”. The 2014Track and Field meet Danny Zirkle award went to Austin Pierce of Maplewood Elementary School.

The Crawford County Supporter Award went to The Arc of Crawford, Warren, and Forest County and Randy Gorske for all the support they give Crawford County Special Olympics by storing sports equipment to using office space at The Arc.

Three Hundred fifty athletes then participated in the 50 or 100 meter run or walk, softball or Turbo Jav Throw, and the standing long jump. People who use wheelchairs participated in a 30 M Slalom, 25 m obstacle course and 25 meter race. The participants may have been assisted or unassisted. To keep athletes moving there was a fun Corn Hole skill game and an Olympic Village. It was wonderful to have over four hundred volunteers from local businesses and service clubs run the events and high school, national honor society and student councils help with the measuring, ribbons, and scoring. Thurston House and Americorp Vista and Peer Mentors from MASH organized a Carnival type Olympic Village and participants could win prizes. Participants could get their face painted at Olympic Village if they chose to. An additional set of guests to entertain at the Olympic Village was the Clown City Clowns, Jam, Smiles and Bubbles. They also walked around to cheer the athletes on in their competitions.

Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club and Edinboro University Future Special Education Teachers both presented Crawford County with checks from recent fundraisers for Special Olympics. Both groups stayed to help out at the 40^th annual event. We are so appreciative of all the sponsors and volunteers.

Crawford County Special Olympics athletes would not have been able to have such a nice event with out the support and donations of food/drink by Mc Donald’s, Nutrition Inc., Luminous Water, and AVI. Thanks to The Meadville Area Credit Union for helping emcee. It was great to have the Sertoma Club food stand and The Arc Barks Hot Dog cart open for hot food and refreshments. Families and parents could register at a family table. It is our hope they will to be on an email list to receive updates on practices and events that fall between quarterly newsletters sent to registered athletes.

The Allegheny College Jazz Dance Ensemble is having it's spring concert to benefit Special Olympics of Crawford County. Saturday, April 9, 2011 8pm in Shaffer Auditorium in the Campus Center building on Highland Avenue. (Across from the Wise Center)
There are usually 10-15 acts performed by individuals or groups from the College and the community. It is a fun entertaining event. They have gift baskets from businesses and individuals to auction off. Come support Special Olympics and be entertained!

Each year Special Olympics hosts a scrapbooking day in The Arc of Crawford County Community Room 222 Chestnut Street Meadville. It is generally the second Saturday in February.

Bill (Far right in photo above) and his coach Mike Shea attended the National Games in Lincoln Nebraska summer of 2010.
Bill did very will in the competition.
He received four medals:
Silver in the 3000 M Run
Gold in the 1500 M run
Gold in the 4x400 Relay
Silver in the 5000 M Run.
Crawford County is very proud of his achievements. Bill will be formally honored at the 2010 Bowling Party November 9. Bill continues to train with Mike Shea the running coach. Mike also coaches volleyball, floor hockey softball and 3x3 basketball for Crawford County Special Olympics.

The first Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day was beautiful. It was attended by 20 athletes and family members. The group collected two dozen canned goods for The Center for Family Services, walked to fulfill their pledges of close to $300., enjoyed seeing Bill's metals from his competition at National Games in Lincoln NE. The session ended with a picnic lunch. We hope this event will grow each year and become a time for more families to join in the fun.

Family table at Track and Field

For the first time we are having a family table beside the registration table and near the Calista Cares table right inside the track.

We will have information and representation from Parent to Parent. A statewide resource for parents to connect with other parents who have children with a similar or the same condition. They can share resources and experiences to hopefully make it easier for everyone.

The Arc of Crawford County is cosponsoring the table by providing a snack to all who register. Special Olympics is giving those who register their email a wrist band and a family ribbon.

We are hoping this will begin to form a strong email communication network when there is a newsletter, event or change in practice schedules it can be quickly communicated to athletes and family members.

Training Schools for Coaches

If you have been looking for an opportunity to coach Special Olympics Athletes, start the process by becoming a certified coach. A Training School includes rules updates, organizing an eight week training plan, and best practices in coaching Special Olympics Athletes. Sport Skills Program materials are provided to each participant. Coaches will need to complete at least ten (10) additional hours of training with the athletes in order to be certified.

Act 48 hours: 1 to 14 hours
Teachers: Special Educationand Physical Education –PreK - 12th grade
Description: General Orientation/Protective Behaviors Training. Learn skills to successfully teach and coach Special Olympics athletes; earn practicumhours in providingsafe training andcompetition opportunities.
