You may have heard of certain live singing performances, like singing contests, when the singing is a bit off in timing with the accompaniment. For many, it would seem that the singer was unable to determine the timing. Perhaps it is true, but there is another possible reason. You see, when you are on stage and your accompaniment (usually on speaker) is facing the audience, the performer cannot hear it clearly. So unless the speaker is directed to the singer (which is often not the case) the possibility of off-timing performance is there.

One way to solve this problem is when you buy in ear monitors which helps you hear exactly what is being produced. I’ve seen the last recorded concert practice of Michael Jackson just before he died. Without his monitor, he’s lost.

I long wanted to start drinking lemon water but for budgetary reason I let the idea stay at the back of my mind. Last Sunday, though, I was given several lemons by my mom, supposedly for a chili mix which my brother introduced. The mix was real good but since she gave me the chilis and the lemons separately and I still had to buy ginger, I started using one of the lemons and tried the lemon water.

I simply sliced a lemon thinly (after washing) and put them all in a big tumbler with cold water. (Warm water is often suggested.) It is best to start the morning with lemon water as it aids in detoxifying. The lemon water helps in neutralizing the pH level, thus, making your body repair faster, helps weight loss, improves digestion (not my problem) and kicks off the coffee habit (although I’ve already overcome this).

What I found beneficial also is the tendency to drink more water because after emptying the tumbler, I’d fill it again so the lemon can spread and I’d drink it again, and it just goes on. I find myself peeing more often. This is good especially when I had the tendency to drink less water especially when I’m busy.

I hate being late as I wanted things done yesterday, but it does not always happen that way. I am often being called a procrastinator but I beg to disagree because a procrastinator is having the habit of putting a task for later when it could have been started now.

With different tasks at hand, I am prioritizing. I write for a living. My different tasks (including home tasks) get to be done depending on several factors: deadline, difficulty, and value. It is also understood that my reputation be upheld with the highest possible standards especially when it comes to writing for others. If anything goes wrong, I am prepared to say sorry. Most likely the reason for failure (like meeting the deadline) is beyond my control. If needed, I will ask for an extension but that rarely happens because I always ask when the maximum due date is.

As for difficulty, I usually start and finish the easy ones so I can have more done in a shorter span of time but I start thinking of the difficult ones ahead of time so that ideas start brewing in my head.

As for value, it really depends. Once I accept a task, for whatever it is worth financial wise, it will be done. If I find myself lacking sleep, though, I will sleep first before starting writing again. That way I can write better with brains recovered, because I value my health more, for without my health, there is no way I can work well. (That is why at times someone needs a rush article written but the time is beyond my bedtime, it is but commensurate to pay me more than the usual since the value of lost sleep (not being able to rejuvenate for the night) will be lost forever and will be a cause for future health ailment.)

Being able to juggle work done for other people and work done for the sake of the home, is never easy especially when you work home based. There are pros and cons and you just have to live with what you have and not worry with what you do not have.

Technology has really improved a lot, even in the offline printing world. The internet did not dampen the spirits of printing companies. Instead, they found ways how they can help their clients even more. It is just a shift in serving. Others who cannot cope simply rely on offline market. After all, paper printing is still needed.
A great example is www.zooprinting.com where they allow their clients to just point and click on available options to be able to come up with the design they needed.
By the way, they are not limited to offset printing. They can also serve digitally.

by Cecile Cinco

Memorizing the books of the Bible is not easy for many especially when it comes to the minor prophets and the epistles of Paul. Having grown up in a church environment I have learned the long way, by repetition. I remember the song Table of Contents way back when I was a teenager (I’m 45 now). Now Jelly is singing it for easier recall. Below is the video.

Children are way better in memorizing the song and it is really good that they start early so that by adulthood they will no longer be fumbling the pages looking for the book at the opposite direction.

There are people who are better off using their imagination with images than looking at words. That means each book has to be represented by an image so that one can be linked to another in a series.

Since I have gone back to making use of one of the memory techniques I have stopped using for some time, I made a story for the Books of the Bible. The more the story gets weird, the better it is to be recalled.

Tomorrow will be the rendering of UCG-Manila Rondalla of Franz Schubert’s Standchen. That means I have to prepare another piece to be rendered sometime within the next 3 months. I was thinking of another but when I was checking my files I remembered that I was having Le Cygne ready. I like the melody and it will be nice with the rondalla playing.

Below is the trumpet version. A bach stradivarius#mcetempurl# trumpet will surely give a good music as long as the player can get the notes right together with the right breathing. Get ready, UCG-Manila Rondalla members. Listen and feel the music. This is your next piece. Will distribute the score arranged and transcribed for rondalla next week.

by Cecile Cinco

I used to have a really good memory. The dwindling of memory may be natural for those of senior age but it should not be for younger ones. About 2 decades ago when my memory was at its peak, I was taught a trick to memorize a series of items. Starting with 20 items, I went on to a hundred. Easily.

The main trick, really, is paying attention. If you are not aware, it does not even get past the short term memory to go to the long term memory container in your brain. Somehow there have been a lot of things that I did not pay attention to. I realized, that’s when my memory began to dwindle.

When I was asked last January if there is something that I can contribute to the UCG-Manila Women’s Club meeting for March, I thought, why not about memory? That’s what I gave last Saturday evening. I can say it was successful. I think I began to pay more attention again, too, that during last night’s Passover, I got to memorize who sat where, among 43 people, in less than 5 minutes. I used to take a written note of the names who were present. Now, not only did I not write, I got to memorize where they sat, knowing who was next to or before each one. It looks like I’m beginning to recover and lessen my “senior moments” (which I should not be even having).

Painting in the sky…

When you forgot something, is it not a common tendency to look up to the ceiling or the sky as if the answer was there? Well, it would be there if you put it there, like if you painted it there. You don’t simply write it. You paint it in full color. You do not even have to be a good realistic painter, instead, the absurd and the exaggerated are the key ingredients to painting a good memory.

During the Women’s Club presentation, I asked each person to give me an item to buy, more like a grocery list. I listed each and here is what we came up with:

toothpaste

cat food

coffee

toilet paper

soap

cooking oil

bread

wine

wipes

shampoo

pencil

sanitary napkin

tissue box

vegetables

sugar

condiments

milk

chololate

The story…

Starting with the toothpaste, a cat is licking it because it is hungry, needing cat food. Its tail is sweeping a hill of instant coffee. It had to be wiped clean with a toilet paper. It is not enough. Soap is needed. Sadly, a bottle of cooking oil spilled beside it and a loaf of bread fell on it. There is a bottle of wine beside it so you take a sip and wiped your mouth with wipes. You went to the bathroom afterwards and used the shampoo. After, you locked your long hair to a bun with a pencil and a sanitary napkin stuck at the end. You decided to put it in a tissue box surrounded by vegetables and sprinkled with sugar with different condiments. The last round was powdered milk. As a reward, you have some chocolates.

That story was made up by the whole group. I still remember it. I’m sure they still do, too.

Conclusion

There are different ways to remember. One is to paint it in the sky. The main key, though, is to pay attention. I think I can give memorizing the Morse Code a try.

There are people who cannot live a day without eating sandwiches. I guess they can’t live without bread and something to fill it. People love the idea that there are probably thousands of varieties all over the world. Fastfood chains are banking on it making sure they have their own, trying to satisfy the smallest stomach to the bottomless one with several stacks, one over the other, which is impossible to bite from top to bottom. Well, it’s even impossible to hold it with two hands without something falling!

I’ve tried to avoid eating in fastfoods for several months now. I’d rather make my own. I’d go for whole wheat bread and lots of veggies and tuna and hot sauce. I’ve even avoided mayonnaise which I used to eat liberally. When I learned how to make it, I stopped eating it. I’d rather eat the bread standalone.

Not all sandwiches are the same. I’m sure sandwich mounts have nothing to do with this. How do you make your sandwich?

by Cecile Cinco

Since moving to this place, internet was never satisfying until I was able to make my own booster dish. Signal is weak because of the surrounding concrete. Ideally, the wired connection would do well with the antenna way up above the roof. I can’t afford that at the moment, though.

I was lent a USB broadband stick. All I needed was to prepay load it. Connection was super slow. As in I had to wait about 5 minutes just wait for the Yahoo mail login page to load. Now, I have several tabs open including Youtube video playing and playing a Facebook game.

Hubby searched for booster solutions and showed it to me. I noticed the dish-like solutions and thought of a mesh wiring strainer. I went to the kitchen looking for something. I knew my strainer is plastic so that did not count. I thought of the small tin bowl but it is just a handful. That’s when I realized the frying pan cover would be perfect.

The frying pan cover was actually a tin basin. (I needed the cover but buying the real cover is expensive so I purposely looked for a tin basin and had hubby screw a handle which he made out of a narra tree branch.) Now that I needed a solution to speed up my internet access I was just ready to repurpose my frying pan tin cover into a booster dish.

The hole where the screw used to pass through was widened with a pair of unopened scissors which made a rectangle hole just enough for the USB stick to get through. I had a short USB extension about a foot long so that is why I could place the dish in that position (pic above).

My connection improved a bit. Still too slow. When I checked my phone, I compared the signal from where the dish was and by the window. The signal by the window has a much stronger signal. That means I need a much longer USB extension so I can hang the dish outside. I bought one at P70 which is already 3 meters long. I set it up this morning and since then my connection is awesome!

Very happy.
