A mechanic and heavy equipment technician for over 20 years, Marra left home out of necessity, driven by the responsibility of providing for his family. “Ginusto kong mag-abroad kasi kailangan. Mahirap ang buhay,” he shared, recalling the many challenges he faced—including a serious work accident—while continuing to persevere for his loved ones. “Number one d’yan yung pagkalayo sa pamilya. Beng-beng, Pigar-Pigar and Imbaliktad

EACH dish has a story…

Eating outside a public market stall in Mangaldan led me to a delicious meal and a local cuisine history lesson about “beng-beng”.

Beng-beng is Mangaldan’s version and the precursor of the more popular street food Dagupan Pigar Pigar, which is deep fried carabao meat seasoned with salt and pepper and garnished with onions.

The difference between bengbeng and pigar pigar is how the meat is cooked. The bengbeng is initially cooked in its own fat and water before oil is added and brought to boil. For pigar pigar, the carabeef is dropped to an already boiling oil. When the meat is cooked cabbage and onions are added

The stall owner and cook who prepared my meal turned out to be the originator of beng-beng, Belen Aquino of JR Bengbengan. According to her, beng-beng is a Pangasinan word for the meat in the abdomen near the ribs of the cow or carabao. The meat trimmings were once given “free” to the matadors/ butchers of Mangaldan who had them cooked by her wayback in the 80’s even before “Isaw” of Dagupan became famous for cooking “pigar pigar” as concocted by Councilor Chito Samson and the late Manny Vent Cornel. Fast forward to more than 30 years, she now maintains a stall outside Farmacia Petilla in the Mangaldan Public market where you can enjoy beng-beng the way it was “originally” cooked. One advantage of Mangaldan is that it has an abattoir. You can say that the meat in the market is always fresh and newly slaughtered.

Similar to beng-beng and pigar-pigar is the Ilocano’s imbaliktad. It is stir-fried half-cooked beef (sometimes goat or carabeef) seasoned salt and pepper with garlic, ginger and onion and to spice it up some hot chilli. Sukang iloko is also added.

It is pigar-pigar however that has became popular among the three. In Dagupan, the whole stretch of Galvan Street is lined with pigar-pigar stalls that serve the dish almost 24/7. Also, there was a Pigar-pigar festival that was once regularly celebrated. I hope they revive the festival again. Other famous pigar-pigar stalls have sprouted outside the Galvan Street area especially in big barangays Lucao and Bonuan Gueset. Nowadays, there are different variations of the dish perhaps to adjust to the customers’ taste buds (shouldn’t it be the other way around?). Some stalls have innovated how the meat is sliced: thinly and bite-size. Some marinate the meat or add flavours like teriyaki-style. I was told that the original pigar-pigar was mixed with “papait” or cow’s bile/ intestinal juice and liver. Somehow the pigar-pigar of today has lost its exoticness and novelty.

Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH), a leading medical institution in Pangasinan and Region I, affirms its commitment to quality healthcare, standing out as the only regional hospital to win at the 18th Philippine Quill Awards of the International Association of Business Communicators - Philippines (IABC Philippines).

Bangus Harvest in Dagupan City

During bangus harvest, water in the fishpond is slowly and partially drained by opening the pond gate. This usually happens during low tide.

Schools of milkfish are pushed to the harvest net through kalukor (seine fishing) where nets tied to bamboo poles are held by men from end to end as they slowly walk from the far end of the fishpond towards the harvest net. It is important that the schools of milkfish are slowly sent to the harvest net to weaken them in order to avoid injuring them otherwise we would get bloodied and limp bangus.

The bangus in the harvest nest is then scooped with the use of a ringed net and transferred to a motorboat filled with crushed ice to ensure that the milkfish remains fresh as they are brought to the fish market.

The milkfish is eventually transferred from the boat into the banyeras (big basins) and sent to the consignacion (fish trader) who sells the harvested milkfish to wholesalers and fish vendors.

Amid new normal, DDVMH actively advocates contactless payments and online consult services

With the practice of physical distancing expected to be prolonged, Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH), a leading healthcare provider in the Metro Dagupan area, actively offers contactless payment options, so patients would not have to carry cash,
lessening the chances of being infected by or being carriers of the new coronavirus.

Patients availing of the hospital’s Villaflor On Demand and Hello Dok services can now pay via GCash and PayMaya. They may download and register on their e-wallet app of choice, then call DDVMH to avail of their needed services. The hospital’s call center agent will then request the needed details and provide the instructions and payment link for an efficient transaction.

Villaflor On Demand is the hospital’s mobile medical service offering laboratory extraction services in patients’ homes -- the first in the Metro Dagupan area -- as well as home delivery of medicines.

Meanwhile, Hello Dok is an online consult program that allows patients to see a doctor through online channels such as Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Google Meet, and Doxy.me. Through this program, patients remain safe at home and avoid the risk of infection from the virus.

Under this program are two services: Telekonsulta and COVID Helpline.

Telekonsulta provides patients with non-emergency conditions with an alternative to consulting with their doctors face-to-face.

For COVID-related concerns, patients may opt to use the COVID Helpline. This service provides patients with medical information as well as preliminary counseling on COVID-19.

I was invited and whisked away to a 21 hectares serene verdant foliage resort and wellness sanctuary in Brgy. Niñoy, Aguilar, Pangasinan - Hiraya Wellness Resort and Ecopark (formerly Goldkrist). But since it's not yet open to the public, I'll reserve the resort details for another post in the future. Let's talk about their food instead.

Inside the resort is its organic farm to table restaurant: Tio Berto's Filipino Grill. It is named after Don Alberto, the patriarch of Hiraya founders. Piolo Pascual: His funny videos help OFs bear the pandemic’s mental burden

Experts in the Philippines and other countries have been warning us: along with the wave of COVID-19 infections would be a wave of mental illness. There’s no avoiding that: people are anxious, afraid, and many have lost jobs and face an uncertain future. Add to that our collective isolation, loneliness, and dread. Overseas Filipinos (OFs) are particularly vulnerable.

Actor Piolo Pascual is among those calling for more support for OFs during the pandemic. He said that overseas Filipinos are already under a great amount of pressure as they face tough emotional, physical, and financial challenges. It’s not surprising then that some of them would have mental health issues.
“For decades, our economy benefited from billions of dollars in remittances. At this time, it’s our turn to give back and support OFs now that they are going through both a pandemic and an economic downturn,” said Piolo.

OF roles in movies, TVCs

Piolo has played several OF characters in various dramatic films--it’s a role that he also knows in real life because he used to be a security guard in Los Angeles, California before he achieved Philippine movie stardom. Recently, it was revealed that he again played versions of these characters in three new videos that will be shown in BDO branches, on BDO’s YouTube channel and on BDO Kabayan Facebook page.

The commercials are light-hearted spin-offs or even slight spoofs of classic scenes in his movies “Milan” (with Claudine Barretto) and “Starting Over Again” (with Toni Gonzaga). As the videos’ release coincides with OFs’ present situation, they take on more significance and meaning in Piolo’s view.
“Mahilig ang mga Pinoy sa drama eh. Pero pati comedy rin. Etong mga videos, parang pinagsama yan tapos may twist. Yung pangkalahatan na mensahe ng video ay kailangan natin ngayon: yung kasiyahan at pag-asa.
Ang drama natin ngayon, real life. Pandemic. Lost jobs. Quarantine. Sandaang araw na itong drama. Hindi kagaya ng drama sa pelikula, two hours lang. So we need relief, we need to feel lighter, to see that we can still smile. Ma-realize lang natin na, oo nga, okay pa rin tumawa, magsaya. Na meron pa ring pag-asa. May solusyon. We can always find ways,” said Piolo.

Reaching out, getting help

Piolo said that the most important thing that OFs need to remember is to reach out for help. “Marami kasi sa atin, may tendency to keep things to ourselves. Masyado tayong matiisin. Akala natin puntos para sa atin yung magdusa. No, it’s not. Kung malungkot ka, o masama ang loob, call a friend. Makipag-usap sa kapamilya. Wala namang award na ibibigay sa iyo kapag sinarili mo ang problema mo. Nagiging delikado lang lalo ang mental health mo,” he said.

He also reminded OFs not to hesitate getting professional help if needed. “There’s still a stigma over mental health. Sa panahon ngayon, hindi na dapat ikahiya ang mental illness. Tratuhin natin na tulad lang ng ibang sakit sa katawan.” He noted that there’s no shame in getting help in order to be better in our minds and emotions.

Piolo added that people should be more empathetic and compassionate. “Pag may lumapit sa atin dahil nalulungkot, o may problema. Huwag balewalain. Sometimes, we say, ‘Kaya mo yan!’ pagkatapos iiwanan natin.. Hindi sapat yun. Huwag natin iwanan. Samahan natin tapos pakinggan natin.Hindi naman kailangan tayo ang mag-solve ng problema. Basta maiparamdam natin na hindi siya nag-iisa. Na nandon tayo to support him or her.”

Call for bayanihan

Piolo added that the new videos show precisely how to help. “In all the videos, mapapansin mo na kahit light and funny ang approach, malinaw ang mensahe: kapag ang kapwa Pinoy ay nasa alanganin, kapwa Pinoy ang tutulong. Hindi naman kailangan na solohin natin ang problema. Ang lakas ng Pilipino, nasa pagtutulungan, bayanihan. Especially during this pandemic, which is a huge, global problem, we need to call on the best in ourselves and help each other,” he said.

In one video, “Starting Over There”, a desperate man (named Marco Villanueva, played by Piolo) chases after a taxicab in the rain, calling after “Ginny” (the character played by Toni Gonzaga in the original film). It is implied that, similar to the film, Ginny is leaving Marco to work abroad.

We then realize that Marco is doubly desperate as he kneels in the rain, because Ginny seems to have left with his ATM card. He says that he needs it to access a remittance. Then a twist happens when an old woman, hair done in curlers, finds Marco as he fumbles in his pockets. Marco sees the ATM card was in his pocket all along.

The old woman chides him, pointing out that with his ATM card, Marco can access an ATM, a BDO branch, and even a BDO Cash Agad kiosk at a sari-sari store. All of which are just around the same block as they are.

Another video, “Starting Over Today,” shows the same character, Marco, passionately delivering the classic lines from the original film. We realize that Marco is inside a bank, somewhat mortified that he wasn’t able to get a BDO Kabayan Savings earlier--because he thought it would be a complicated, arduous process. The teller assures him otherwise.

The third video, based on “Milan,” shows Marco asking help from a lovely fellow OF in sending money from Italy to a BDO Kabayan Savings account. The lady – whose features are noticeably familiar – is supposed to be a stand-in for Claudine Barretto.

All the new videos aren’t just fun and enjoyable to watch but also showcase how Filipinos, deep down, are ready to help someone in need. Pangasinan comfort food: Dagupan Kaleskes

Dagupan Kaleskes is a dish made out of cow or carabao meat and its internal organs in a hot, delicious, orange colored broth. The dish got its name from 'Kaleskes' which is a Pangasinan word for intestines.

It is the annatto or achuete that gives the soup its distinct orange color and slightly nutty, earthy and delicately sweet flavor. But most of the yummy flavor comes from the beef and innards (some prefer to use carabeef as it is said to be more flavorful and cheaper than beef).

The meat is slow cooked in a big aluminum basin or casserole usually with charcoal in a brazier or kalan de uling/ ulingan (clay stove). This adds a different scent and flavor to the food. The coup de grace for a delectable Dagupan Kaleskes are the free sebo tan dala (fat and blood)! By the way, the broth is unlimited so you can ask for endless refill.

Kaleskes, a Pangasinan dish is similar to the Ilocano’s Sinanglao and Pinapaitan. It however does not have the sour taste of sinanglao and the bitter and biliary taste of the pinapaitan.

The Dagupan Kaleskes is deeply ingrained in Dagupan City’s history having been here since 1954. The first kaleskes stalls were once located near the Old Chinese Cemetery until the vendors transferred to the Old Perez Public Market where they are now located. The place is now more popularly known as the “Kaleskesan.”

The original kaleskes vendors are from Calasiao, a nearby town. According to the third generation “original kaleskes” cooks Mercy Callanta and Roan Domalanta, one of the originators was their grandmother Victoria Jimenez together with some family friends and relatives who pooled their resources and cooking talent and brought them to Dagupan. At present, the oldest kaleskes cook/ vendor is Jovita Rampas who is 76 years old.

Dagupan Kaleskes is usually available from 4PM until the wee hours of the morning or until supply lasts. You can choose from plain karne (meat), puso (heart), kaleskes (intestines), pali (spleen), lapay (pancreas) and twalya tan libro (beef tripe) or a mix of the different parts to your gastronomical delight. More often than not, an extra serving of rice is unavoidable so bid your diet plans goodbye at the moment. When you’re in Dagupan, the kaleskes is a perfect comfort food for the cold night, a tummy filler for merienda and dinner or pampamawmaw (rehydrate and refill) after a drinking spree. The stalls are located at Herrero-Perez just beside the barangay hall and the Dagupan Fire Station.

*Update: The price of Kaleskes is 50 Php per bowl and is now back to its normal operating hours which extends until early morning while supplies last.

Villaflor On Demand: The first and only mobile ambulatory service in Metro Dagupan!

Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH) has launched a new home laboratory extraction service -- the first in the Metro Dagupan area. The hospital's newest offering as Pangasinan eases through the new normal.

Patients are now able to have laboratory extraction services done in the comfort of their homes given the risk of infection from COVID-19 and by the limited mobility due to the community quarantine. Thanks to DDVMH's Villaflor On Demand’s lab extraction services!

Laboratory extraction services include blood extraction, urine analysis, and fecal analysis. All services will be facilitated by a phlebotomist or medical technologists for proper handling and quality results.

Why the need for Villafor On Demand? DDVMH’s new offering aims to ease the fears of Metro Dagupan residents, especially senior citizens (Seniors are among those most vulnerable to the disease because of their weakened immune system), over leaving their homes and eventually contracting COVID-19, even as the national government downgraded Pangasinan to a modified general community quarantine until June 30.

The elderly, chronically ill patients, patients recovering post-surgery, bedridden patients, and patients with special needs will be given priority but all patients can avail of the home lab extraction services.

Patients are advised to schedule their extraction requests two weeks before the day of the confirmed extraction date.

Aside from the home laboratory extraction service, Villaflor On Demand offers home delivery of medicines and online medical consultations.

Dawel River Cruise Relaunched!

The Dawel River Cruise takes us back to the time of the forefathers of Dagupan City when the early settlers painstakingly built fishponds with their bare hands and simple tools, to the present when the rivers have been revived and revitalized until the future when the fruition of the sparkling clean rivers are enjoyed by the next generation of Dagupeños.

The Dawel River Cruise will let you experience the serenity and pristine beauty of Dagupan’s rivers. One would definitely enjoy the refreshing breeze, invigorating sight of the clean river, mangroves, different avian species, various freshwater fishes including Dagupan’s treasure and the world’s tastiest milkfish– the Dagupan Bangus!

It was one of the eco-tourism and livelihood projects of the late Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin S. Lim and now relaunched by his son Mayor Marc Brian C. Lim in time with the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, Patron Saint of Dagupan City.

The Dawel River Cruise starts from the wharf or quay aptly called Daungan ed Dawel at the foot of the Dawel bridge in Catacdang, Bonuan Gueset. The cruise which would last for about an hour, passes through the calm rivers of Dawel and Watac-Mamalingling- two river tributaries of Pantal and Bayaoas rivers. Pantal and Bayaoas rivers are two of the Seven Rivers of Dagupan City which include Patogcawen, Magueragday, Paldakit, Calmay and Tanap.

Along the stretch of the riverbank where the boat passes, one could see lush green trees called mangroves or bakawan. There are about fourteen (14) identified species out of the forty eight species of mangroves found in the Philippines. Situated at the turn-about of the cruise are the ruins of the old Ferrocarril de Manila-Dagupan railroad track built in the early 1900’s that led to Damortis, La Union.

The Dawel River Cruise boat is proudly Dagupan-made as it was locally built by the finest craftmen and boatmakers from Dagupan's island barangays. It is made of an engine-powered flat deck catamaran with two hulls. Its roof is made out of Nipa palm leaves securely fastened in stainless steel frames. Bamboo strips make up the boat's flooring. From afar the boat looks like a floating Nipa hut or bahay kubo. The Dawel River Cruise boat can seat around twenty four (24) persons. Safety provisions like lifesavers are placed in boat railings. Boat drivers, boat assistants and tour guides are trained swimmers and rescuers.

Provisions for dining, onboard entertainment, massage and spa while cruising are in the works. More activities and added facilities and amenities at the identified pit stops are envisioned by Dagupan City Tourism Officer Rose Mary Teng - Mejia. Bangus. One of the special features of the original river cruise is the feeding of Dagupan bangus in one of the fishponds along the route which can be done through special arrangement with the fishpond owners, the City Agriculture Office and City Tourism Office.

So the next time you visit Dagupan City, be entertained and captivated by the Dawel River Cruise!

The markers indicate that it was constructed in August 1975, through the efforts of Susumu Fukuda, Takeaki Yazaki, Suburo Chin, Harunobu Katsu, Masayoshi Itoh, Susumu Ishikawa, Shohei Okada, Shigeyoshi Takana, and thousands of other Japanese. Mayor Cipriano Manaois, the municipal board, people of Dagupan City and Toyo Menka Kaisha Ltd. were specifically thanked for the project.

This was dedicated to the heroism and valor of all soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during World War II.
