Baby Aiden, Calgary Baby Photography

I am have been meaning to get some pictures posted of Baby Aiden who visited with us a couple of weeks ago, he is such a happy baby with great facial expressions!

No he was not making this face at me, but rather my daughter Erin, I am not quite sure what she was doing but every once in a while he would just give her this, "who are you and what are you doing" look!

I continue to work on Aiden's pictures, and I will be posting more during the week!

It is mid March in Calgary, we all get a little anxious waiting for spring. With a chinook or two a large part of the snow is gone, and we are all convinced spring is just around the corner!

babies are fun to watch, and I love taking pictures of them.

I have had no end of trouble getting great images of babies, and young children, and I am reminded yet again, seeing this photo, that it is often easier to let them play, get them interested in their environment and then the magic begins!

I am reminded that even if we don't have a camera we should all sit and watch kids play more often, at least for me it brings a smile to my face.

I hope I have brought a smile to your face.

African Lions at the Cambridge African Lion Safari Park

Lion Pride

I loved the park, we watched the animals from the park, and they watched us. Here are two beautiful lions in the shade of a big tree enjoying the afternoon enterainment, the parade of cars. When we were there, July a couple of years ago, it wasn't very busy.

Ethereal Beauty on water

Photo friday was a weekly photo contest, each week a new word is given, and people submit photos they think best suit the word. The words are usually quite subjective, for example this week the work is "ethereal" and the images that are submitted vary. As with any art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and context of the word can also vary, from literal to implied and is also very subjective. So the weekly challenge is quite interesting and I enjoy seeing the various images.

I went first looking for the definition, to make sure the images I submitted had some literal context and found the following I immediately thought of the pelican's photographed on a long exposure, "ghosting" across the river.

1. Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; intangible.

2. Highly refined; delicate. See Synonyms at airy.

a. Of the celestial spheres; heavenly.

b. Not of this world; spiritual.

Grandpa's Car

I have been going through some of my old photos, sifting through the files, smiling at the memories, and finding gems.

Grandpa's Car was parked on the side of the hill just north of the old barn, and the grass grew up around it. I have taken the photo and processed it in photoshop to look like an old/aged photo!

Peacock - hide and seek

Peacocks are one of my favorite birds, I love the color and their beautiful feathers. I guess in part of the reason I love them is that they are exotic, they are not a bird that we have here where I live.
I remember coming across this beautiful young peacock weaving in and out of the little bushes, looking for diner.

Portraits are special, as photographers we pay special attention to the eyes and face, and we watch for a connection and emtion. We want to reveal the subject personality and if there is more that one subject we want to show their connection.

For me, I could sit and watch all day, and see special moments.

Calgary Tower, a view from the Sky 360 Restaurant

While at the Calgary Tower Bill and I had dinner at the Sky 360 Restaurant. For those who have not been up there or are not familiar with the restaurant it is on a rotating platform. The restaurant makes a completed turn every hour, and while you are having your meal you can get a changing view of the city.

I think sunset is the best time to go because the city goes from day to night, prairie sunsets are the best in the world, and watching the city lights come on and the landscape change is fascinating and inspiring. It is worth a trip the the restaurant.

For these images I set the camera on the table, and used a slow shutter speed, the the buildings passed by!

I had a Boudoir Photo session scheduled for yesterday, unfortunately it was cancelled, due to illness, and rescheduled. Since the lights and studio were all set up I thought I would use the time to photography some of the props we might be using.

Calgary Tower and the Sky 360 Restaurant

On Friday night Bill and I decided to go somewhere special for dinner, after much discussion, some researching out our options on Open Table we choose to go to the Calgary Tower and the 360 Sky Restaurant

I wanted to go there for a couple of reason, first I have not been up to the Calgary Tower since the new viewing window was installed, and I though it would be fun to take my camera, and my fisheye lens and give everyone an idea what is like to stand on or near the window and check out the view.

I could see all the way up Center St, from the bottom of the tower north up Center St as far as the eye could see. I love the view, and while I hesitated a second before stepping on the glass it was great to step out there and see the city from this great view. I will probably post more pictures of this great view down the road, but don't wait for me to show you the view, visit the Calgary Tower for yourself.
After our visit to the Observation Deck we went down one floor to the Sky 360 Restaurant for an amazing dinner. I would recommend the restaurant for any special eventy. The staff were warm, friendly and informative. What I remember most is the smell of the food as it arrived at our table, as the waiter set the food down in front of us, we could smell the lovely herbs and ingredients that were use, I could hardly wait to taste the dishes. Bill and I shared the Beet Salad, and the PEI Mussels, and for the main course I had the Risotto while Bill had Lamb, done two ways. The PEI Mussels were probably the best we have ever had, they used a special sausage and tomato sauce. We had no room for dessert! Here is Bill waiting for dinner.

As we talked and eat and enjoyed our wine I set the camera on the table and occassionaly took a picture of the view going by. The restaurant is a rotating restaurant and makes a complete turn every hour, we took our time over dinner, and saw the city twice. For me the best time to go is just before sunset, and watch the light of the city change.

Kim celebrates during warmer days in Calgary

I am reviewing old files, trying to processes and finding some gems, here Kim celebrates her special day last fall when it was much warmer here in Calgary.

Kim and Jon met while she was ushering at the Saddledome during the Calgary Fames Games. Both are big fans of the Calgary Flames. It was great to spend the day with them, and I am having lots of fun travelling back in time, and through my files.

Weddings are great, they bring family and friends together, everyone is dressed in their best, often they have gone out to buy something new, and if they are part of the wedding party they have pruchased something special.
Kids at the wedding are fun, and are usually uninhibited by the events going on around them. Kim and Jon's flower girl was completely absorbed in the events and the beauty of the bride, she could hardly take her eyes off Kim.
I wish there had been more time to ge a couple more images of the little angel. There are ususally not enough images of the kids, because they always bring a smile to my face. As I find more smiles, and more images of the "wedding kids" I will post them for your enjoyment.

Brett and Amrita were married a number of years ago, in fact if I remember correctly they celebrated their 8th anniversay, it was an honor to be invited to share that special day with them, and this is one of those special moments I have been happy to photograph over the years.

The Piazza Venezia is dominated by chaotic traffic, tourists taking picutes, vendors, and even gladiators who will pose (for a price) with you for a picture. But don't let all that keep you from visiting here asthere are some sights around the square that are worth seeing.

The landmark dominating the Monument to the Vittoria Emanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy, and hold the Tomb of the Unknow Soldier with an eternal flame.

Yuma Arizona, music in the hills

While I was down in Yuma Arizona visiting my parents we were invited out to the hills to listen to the music, share a potluck dinner, and watch the moon come up. There was a full table, talented musician, and a full moon. A good time was had by all.

Last summer I was lucky enough to wander the Ramsey area with Russ and Sheri, here we are on a hill called Scotchman Hill overlooking the downtown area of Calgary Alberta. It is a beautiful area to watch the sunsets,the fireworks that take place during the Calgary Stampede or the people as they stroll by.

It was late afternoon and we watched the rain clouds roll in and the people pass by, oh yea we took lots of photos.

McPhaul Bridge, Yuma Arizona, Twilight

RoadsideAmerica.com reports that this 800 foot long suspension bridge spanned the Gila River when it was built in 1929, and was named McPhaul Bridge in honor of Henry Harrison McPhaul. It was considered too flimsy for modern traffic and when the dam was built upstream in 1968 traffic was rerouted.

Thousand Palms Oasis, Palm Springs California

While visiting Palms Springs we went for a walk through a natural oasis, it is quite a unique area, trails are well marked, and volunteers run guided tours and the gift shop.

San Francisco, a view from the airplane

I headed down to visit my parents, my connecting flight took me through San Fransico California. I have, in the past, spent a few days there, and loved it. I loved wandering the parks and streets, the galleries and shops and riding the street cars. I promised myself that I would go back someday.
Today was not to be the day, today was a connecting flight, I didn't get to leave the airport. I got to see the city from the air, the sun was setting, and it looks like there was some fog over the city.

If you look closely, I mean really closely you can almost see the Golden Gate Bridge.
