Malaysia: Melaka overnight

After visiting Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia, Ivan Man Dy explores Melaka, both of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage inscription. Text and photos by Ivan Man Dy.

Melaka (Malacca), they say, is where Malaysia began. Founded in the 1400s this city can certainly claim historical pedigree more than any other in Malaysia. Its long list of narratives include Malay sultanates, Chinese migration, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Japanese occupations.

Similar to its northern sister city, Georgetown, Melaka boast of a multicultural legacy brought about by these currents of history. However, unlike the former, Melaka's historic center is noticeably smaller and in fact, may well just be zipped through for the obligatory photo opportunity as I noticed with a lot of day tour packages.

Not for me though. As a heritage junkie, historic towns like this appeal to me a lot and I opted to stay overnight.

The thing with Melaka is that the historic center is actually small enough and everything can be covered by foot. At the center of it is the red-colored Dutch Square whose landmarks include Christ Church (1753), the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia, and the Stadthuys, former residence and headquarters of the colonial Dutch governors, which today houses the Museum of History and Ethnography. This is where the trigger happy tourists let loose and it's interesting that just a few steps up (and RM10 entrance fee) will lead you to a fascinating and quiet crash course on the city's rich narrative.

At the back of the the Stadhuys is St. Paul's Hill where stands the ruins of Portuguese-built St. Paul's Church (1521). Inside are some old European tombstones as well as the temporary burial spot of the Catholic Jesuit St. Francis Xavier before his remains was transferred to Goa.

Also in the area is the A Famosa, the only remant of Melaka's original Portuguese fortifications. To further highlight this 130 odd years of Portuguese occupation, parts of the original city walls have been excavated and rebuilt. Think a super mini version of Manila's Intramuros walls.

End your walk of the area at English-colonial style Proclamation of Independence Memorial Hall, where the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman announced the country's independence from Britain in 1957.

The history of Melaka has always been tied up with trading and the Melaka River certainly played a very big part in it. Take a stroll at the refurbished river promenade before heading on Chinatown across the river. Located on the three major streets (which are all parallel each other) very close the Dutch Square, this is perhaps the liveliest part of the old town. Lined with traditional shop houses that still function in their original purpose, they range from simple to really ornate.

Jalan Tokong is home to three places of worship: the Taoist Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (1645),the Hindu Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple (1785) and Islamic Kampong Kling Mosque (1868). The former two lay claim to the oldest in the country. And of course, a cliche we often heard in Malaysia, Jalan Tokong is a known as the 'Street of Harmony'.

Over at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, don't miss the charming Baba Nyonya Museum for an insight on the lives of the culturally-rich Peranakan Cina (Chinese-Malay) community. And if you are so really historically-inclined, walk about 25 minutes from the Dutch Square to Bukit Cina (Chinese Hill), supposedly the largest Chinese cemetery outside China. Huff and puff your way up to view the burial mounds or light an incense at Sam Poh Kong. This temple is said to have links with the legendary Ming Dynasty explorer Cheng Ho, another of Melaka's great touchstones in her fabled history.

So much history, all captured within one overnight stay. Definitely worth the sleep.

The pizzas are large (compared to other pizza places) at about 20-22 in. in diameter. We like simple cheese pizzas, so we often order the 4- or 5-cheese variant when available. Nolita's White Cheese version is a good alternative.

Regular Cheese (P130/slice).

The Blue Cheese Mac & Cheese was nothing special. We love blue cheese, but for some reason, this did not come out right. We tried it the first time we visited, and we thought they would have improved it by now.

Some say Nolita serves the best cookie in BGC Central. This one was big, chunky, sweet and very filling.

But their signature dessert is the cannoli, which is quite popular in NY Italian restos. Although I found it too sweet, I think it's still a good dessert alternative in BGC Central.

Overall, we love Nolita's casual ambiance and big pizzas (especially the ones with the eggs). If you want good food without the fuss in a relaxed environment, this is the place for you. Just budget P500/head.

Dear readers,

Here is the recipe for the day from pinoyfoodblog.com. I am also requesting a huge favor. If you think I should win as “The One” in Globe’s Tatt Awards, then please vote online for me and consider Blog Watch (as The Advocate)…via this link http://tattoo.globe.com.ph/tattawards/vote.
Dagupan City once promoted 100 ways to cook Bangus but for me the best Bangus dish is still Rellenong Bangus (or Relyenong Bangus)> Here’s the recipe I use.

Ingredients

I medium sized Bangus (more or less 800 gramns)
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
3 teaspoons Calamansi juice
1/8 teaspoon Pepper
Dash of Salt
1/4 cup water
2 Tablespoons cooking oil
2 cloves, crushed gralic
1 onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup tomatoes, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt

Cayman Islands In My Mind

I’m currently in Cebu City for a mini vacation. One that I feel I truly need and somehow deserve. I’ll tell you all more about my Cebu vacation but let me give you a little sneak peek: through the kind assistance of Cebu’s one and only Queen, Jude B., I’m doing an amazing hotel hop – Marco Polo Plaza, Waterfront Hotel and Casino Lahug, Radisson Blu Cebu, Islands Stay Cebu and Maribago Bluewater Resort Mactan. Exciting, huh?

Although I do remember that someone sent me a message a few days ago. He asked that if I wasn’t in Cebu, where would I want to spend a vacation in and why? My quick answer? Cayman Islands.

Yes, I know that to visit Cayman Islands and see the wonderful Cayman Islands Attractions sound a little bit far-fetched (for now!) but hey, a girl can dream, yes?

I mean who wouldn’t want to visit Cayman Islands anyway? Located in the Western Caribbean Sea, this beautiful area boasts of so many activities fit for excited tourists like me. From snorkelling through clear blue waters to diving to golfing to exploring and even to spending time at Stingray City (there are a lot of beautiful stingrays in the waters of Cayman Islands), one’s visit at this beautiful territory will definitely be very memorable. And oh, don’t forget the interesting National Pirates Week Festival every November! I don’t know about you but I think that sounds awfully cool

This is an advertorial

One of the questions I often get asked is “how do I get to (insert destination here)?” I reply with the route I took, following it up with the other possible routes that they can take. A related question would be “what airline did you take,” and “how much does the flight cost?” It gets tiring after a while, since for me, it’s something that you can easily search for in Google.

Apparently, there’s an even easier way to search for flights: Skyscanner. It’s basically a travel search site that helps you find cheap flights and even the ever elusive promo fares that airlines offer.
Here’s what you do, go to www.skyscanner.com.ph. Since it’s a localized version of the main site, the site will be in Tagalog and the currency defaults to Philippine peso. You can change this by clicking on the language option at the top of the page.

Fantastic feature for those who can’t set a date. Like me.

You’re probably already used to the booking facilities of most airlines: select origin airport, destination airport, departure and return dates, etc. Skyscanner looks the same, but with one huge difference: you don’t have to set a destination nor a date for your search!

Actually, you do. At the start, you just set your home airport and set an open date for your trip. You can set it to search for flights tomorrow, next week, the entire month or even the entire week. Leave the destination set to everywhere and Skyscanner will show you a list of destinations you can go to, starting from the cheapest fares.

So much easier to find cheap airfare!

The great thing about this is that if you want to travel, but can’t make up your mind where to go, this gives you concrete ideas as to where you can go based on your budget and schedule.

One awesome feature that I liked is the fare chart that shows you which days are the best to travel so you’re guaranteed cheap airfare. Skyscanner searched through thousands of airlines, so gone are the days where you have to open at least 3 browser tabs just to check fares and schedules for different airlines. How’s that for convenient?

Skyscanner for iOS

Speaking of convenient, they have a mobile app for your iOS and Android devices. Of course, it requires a network connection, but it does make searching for flights while you’re on the go so much easier.

Skyscanner is not a booking site. While it does the searching for you, to book the flights you selected, you will be redirected to the airline’s website. Worry not though, because when you’re redirected, you’ll find yourself in the flight selection page, with the destination and dates already set to the specification you set in the Skyscanner website. Nifty, eh?

When I was redirected to Cebu Pacific’s website, the cheapest fare is actually Php488. Oddly enough, the total still ended up more expensive than the rate quoted in here.

By the way, if you’re planning a trip with friends and family, you can share your search results to the joiners through Facebook, Twitter, or e-mail.

Give Skyscanner a try, it’s a really impressive and easy to use travel tool. The unfortunate downside that I ran into while trying it out is that it’s making me want to book a trip. Or three.
