In fact, they make a terrific treat for breakfast at the weekends! It's tough to find ready-made pancake mix that is wheat-free and gluten-free. Hale & Hearty do a 4 grain pancake mix that is very tasty! The recipe is crammed with 4 supergrains - rice flour, quinoa flour, buckwheat flour and chickpea flour as well as golden flax seed which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Therefore this recipe is high in fibre and low in GI. The pancakes are easy to make too, simply prepared in 3 minutes. I really enjoyed the pancakes, very tasty and nutritious, filling too. Try them plain with just some honey or syrup or be a little more adventurous. I tried mixed berries and creme fraiche - delicious! For a hearty breakfast, try crispy bacon with maple syrup or add a poached egg. Or try it sweet with melted chocolate. The possibilities are endless. Hale & Hearty foods are available at health shops. They contain protein, iron, zinc, and magnesium, which provide the body with energy and oats can lower your cholesterol too! Oats release energy slowly and keep you sustained all day. They are high in fibre too, wholegrain, and suitable for vegetarians. Paterson's do a super range of oat products - Oat bites, rough oatcakes, olive oil oatcakes, cracked black pepper oatcakes, and triangle oatcakes. I was spoilt for choice! Oatcakes are wheat free and a great nutritious snack or for lunch. Paterson's oatcakes are great quality, nice and crunchy, a good texture and very filling. I liked the cracked black pepper the best. They are very different, and have a real kick to them. Here's a separate review. Paterson's oatbites are very interesting, I found these great for on the go, just pop them in your bag and you know you've a healthy and nutritious snack with you. They do 2 flavours - cheese and chive and chilli and cheese. Both are really delicious and are filling and very tasty. I particularly like the chilli and cheese, nice and spicy yet subtle. Here's a full review on them. You should really try Paterson's oats range, very good. Available in most good health shops. They should consider developing the oatbites range and look at other flavour combinations. I'll be queuing up to try them!

Dessert is a rare treat and usually happens only if there is an option on a gluten-free menu. And custard is something that I haven't had in years! Hale & Hearty do a gluten-free and wheat-free custard, so I was delighted to get a chance to try it! I followed the instructions on the pack, which seemed pretty straight-forward. Put 3 tablespoons of custard powder, 6 tbps of milk or a dairy-free alternative and 2-3 tbps of sugar or sweetener into a pan. Stir it all into a smooth paste. Add remainder of pint of milk and stir well. Slowly bring to the boil at medium heat whilst stirring. Reduce the heat and simmer for a minute to desired consistency. Allow custard to stand for a minute before stirring. It sounds very easy. However, I tried cooking the custard twice and it was really runny both times. The second time I cooked it, I tried adding an additional spoon of custard powder to thicken it, but it wasn't much better. On the plus side, the taste was really great, so I really wished that it did work. I'll try a third time and see if the consistency is any better. This custard has no added sugar and real bourbon vanilla pods and the vanilla taste really comes through and is very tasty. This custard is wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar free and GMO free. Hale & Hearty do a great range of products, so I will be tasting more and reviewing. In need of a healthy savoury snack instead of a sweet one? Crisps are off the menu as we don't want to be unhealthy. I tried Patersons oat bites, and really enjoyed them! I've never had an oat-bite before! These are basically little bites of oat cakes packed with flavour to make you feel fuller for longer. Absolutely ideal for snacking. I tried the chilli and cheese flavour - very tasty! And might I add, very filling too. Chilli, cheese and oats might sound like an odd combination but they really work! There's a hint of cheese and a mild chilli flavour to give it a bit of a kick and the oats are delicious. I really liked these and would recommend them too. What I also liked is that there are 5 individual packs in the box, which make them ideal for snacking and for popping in your handbag for a snack when you are out and about. Don't be tempted by the crisp aisle, oat bites will satisfy your craving. Available at all good independent health stores and from Goodness Direct

As we know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it's essential to get in enough nutrients first thing. What better way to do it than a cereal with a mixture of grains instead of wheat. I tried Nature's Path new gluten-free cereals. Maple Sunrise is a cereal with a variety of grains - flax, quinoa, buckwheat and amaranth, corn and brown rice puffs. These grains are all combined with maple syrup. The mixture of grains gives this cereal a great boost to your body with essential nutritional benefits, such as good sources of energy, protein and B vitamins. I really enjoyed the crunchiness and texture of the cereal as well as the variety of flavours. The maple blends well and adds to the sweetness. I did however find the maple flavour very strong. I had someone else try the cereal and they loved it and didn't agree with maple being too strong. So, maybe it was just me!
I also tried the Nature's Path gluten-free Os - primarily aimed at children, but I think adults would happily eat them too! Corn and whole grain rice make up this crunchy cereal which I really enjoyed. The texture and flavour is really nice. Just a suggestion, but I think if the maple syrup from the other cereal was added that it may appeal to children more! Nature's Path do a great range of cereals, see their website for more details. I'll definitely be trying more of their products. Nature's Path products are available in all good independent health stores throughout Ireland.
My passion to find healthy wheat-free food as a necessity and a hobby has turned into so much more. I've been in touch with so many suppliers of food brands to taste their creations and review loads of wheat-free and gluten-free products. I'm really grateful to all you blog readers too as your comments help me greatly, and also encourages manufacturers to create even better food! It's great to see more and more brands catering for the wheat-free living market and restaurants and cafes catering for dietary requirements and coeliacs. Ireland in particular has really stepped up its game and offers a lot more variety than 3 years ago when I started my blog. Long live the wheat-free community, and here's to many more years blog writing and reviewing! Thanks everyone :-)

Wow is all I can say! I have tasted the most divine gluten-free and wheat-free chocolate biscuits ever! Chocolate bourbons by Prewetts from Northumbrianfinefoods are seriously pure indulgence. These biscuits are crunchy, chocolately, a great texture and just fabulous! A chocolate biscuit with a chocolate flavour filling coated in milk chocolate. Made from rice flour and maize flour, also contains milk and soya. These biscuits are also suitable for vegetarians. Each biscuit has 126kcal which for pure indulgence isn't too bad in my eyes. They are pretty filling too, so one should be enough. The only problem is that they are so tasty that you'll want more!! They actually taste better than what I can remember of real biscuits! The packet didn't last long I can tell you that! I'm not sure where these biscuits can be bought as a friend gave them to me, but I'll contact the manufacturers and find out and let you know. More info on their products is on their website. They have a good range of wheat-free and gluten-free products which I'm interested in trying. If you find these biscuits in a local shop, please let me know!!
If you fancy some carbs with that, but something lighter than bread, then breadsticks are your answer. I tried Tesco free from mini breadsticks and they went perfectly with the dips. These mini breadsticks come in 2 sealed packs so there's no chance of them going stale. Gluten-free and wheat-free made with maize starch and rice flour. Nice and crunchy and filling too, they've a good texture and taste very close to the real thing! Ten breadsticks come in at 111kcal which isn't bad at all and 10 is plenty. I'd buy these again, handy for nibbling or dinner parties if you are entertaining guests with dietary requirements.

It's a pleasure to be able to eat a vegetarian burger that is wheat-free. Too often, there are breadcrumbs or some sort of wheat in ready-bought burgers. Dee's burgers have a new concept in the fact that they are nutritious wholegrain burgers, which include beans and seeds such as hemp and sunflower seeds. Apart from these burgers being meat free, they are also soya, dairy, salt, sugar, wheat and gluten free. Dee's mission is commitment to improving the health and happiness of those around us. Dee uses the highest quality natural and organic ingredients as she is a firm believer in good health beginning with what goes into your body. There are two burgers in the range - Omega Burger and Spicy Bean Burger. I tried the Omega burger, which is a blend of 2 whole grains and 2 super food seeds with fresh vegetables. It is packed with fibre and protein. The burgers are very mild tasting with a flavour of toasted seeds. Millet and brown rice are also used. I liked these burgers. I'd be interested in trying the spicy burgers as there might be more of a punch off them. For more info on Dee's product, look at her website or on www.meatfreemondays.ie

I tried the "free from" white seeded rolls (4 in a pack) and they were really tasty, the seeds add a nice nutty texture. Each roll is a good size too. They are gluten free, wheat free, and dairy free too. Made with tapioca starch, rice flour and potato starch, that's what gives it the bread and doughy taste! They are more filling than a lot of gluten-free breads that I've tasted. Just as well, as they are quite high in calories at 237kcal per roll! What I like about these rolls too is that you can freeze them. It isn't always the case with gluten-free bread for some reason. It'd be great if these rolls were in brown too. I'd rather eat brown to know that I'm getting that little bit more nutrition. They've a slice pan in brown and white, so must try them and report back!

Made from spelt, one of the oldest cultivated grains (an ancient cousin of wheat), which is high in fibre. Spelt can be tolerated by some people with wheat allergies. I tried these and had no problems. They are really tasty, very crunchy and incredibly light. They have a delicious nutty flavour and are easy to digest. Enjoy with your favourite savoury or sweet topping. Great as a snack or use with soup. No added sugar, dairy free, vegan and contain gluten. I'd recommend these and what's great about them too is that the pack contains 2 packs, so keeps them fresh. Enjoy!

That's easier said than done though as it's always the standard white for gluten-free products and there's sometimes a brown alternative, but not always. Brown gluten-free pasta is especially difficult to find. However, I did find Doves Farm's organic gluten-free brown rice pasta.
It cooks in 5-7 minutes and it's really delicious. It tastes healthy, has a good texture too. It's nice to know that you are eating brown rice also as it's much better for you. I can see why this pasta has won awards. It's the perfect penne pasta for those avoiding wheat and gluten. Add the sauce of your choice (home-made of course!) and you've a quick and easy dinner in minutes. I’m always one to try something new when it’s wheat-free, so if I see a new product or something I haven’t tried before in a health store or supermarket, I get very excited. I came across Kelkin’s gluten-free sourdough bread. My first thought is that is way overpriced - €3.59 for 6 slices of bread!! Sourdough is supposed to be a bitter taste, a little sour, but this bread tasted quite sweet. Don't get me wrong, I actually really liked the taste of it, but just thought it wasn't what it was supposed to be and it was very expensive. Slices are a good size and thickness, don't fall apart like a lot of gluten-free bread and it isn't dry either. It can be eaten straight from the pack as tastes fresh, and doesn't need to be toasted like other breads. The pack contains 2 individual packs for freshness. This is good, but would be better if there was more bread to keep fresh!! Each slice contains 157kcal which is quite high I think. Would I buy this again is the question - if there was more bread in the pack I might part with the cash but for 59c a slice at the moment, I don't think so.

I came across Hildegard Health's Organic Spelt Sesame Crunch. The pack says it's a deliciously crunchy blend of toasted spelt flakes, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, honey and cinnamon. Spelt is rich in essential amino acids, it is a source of prolonged energy, it is high in fibre and rich in vitamin B1. All sounds great. But to be honest, I wasn't overly convinced with this cereal. The flavour is nice, it has a good crunch to it. However I found it very dry. Even mixed with milk or soya milk, it's difficult to swallow. I tried adding it in with a bit of yoghurt and that was marginally better. The cinnamon is a nice twist and gives it a kick. I've never tried any of Hildgegard Health's cereals and they seem to have a good range, so I won't be put off by one product. I will try more and revert. I'm often sceptical of ready-mixes as I like to know what amounts of sugar etc are put into baking. However, I'm now very open to trying ready-made mixes as they make life very easy! The Cake & Crumb do a great range of mixes. I tried the shortcrust pastry, madeira mix and the chocolate brownie mix - all gluten free and wheat free. When I say they make life easy, you simply add 2 ingredients - eggs and butter. And wow, they are fantastic. They were all great. I especially love the chocolate brownies, they are absolutely amazing. They were very simple to make as well, simply add eggs and melted butter to the mix, stir well and put into a greased tin and bake for 30 minutes. The smell from the oven after about 20 minutes was mouth-watering and when I took them out after 30 minutes, I was so impatient, I didn't want to let them cool. I started chopping them up and they kind of crumbled, but that was my fault! What's fantastic about these is that there is still some gooey chocolate inside them. My sister cannot eat wheat either and she adored them. My husband can eat wheat and he demolished them as well! So, just shows that wheat-free, gluten-free is a winner all round! Check out The Cake and Crumb to see their great range of products. I'm certainly sold!

A wheat-free and gluten-free muffin that tastes like the real thing! That's what the American Muffin Co Ltd has done. They do a huge selection of muffins and cake bites - you can choose from blueberry, chocolate chip and double-chocolate mini muffins, large cranberry and orange muffins, chocolate brownies, lemon cake bites and fruit cake bites. All are fantastic. I haven't tasted cakes like these before. They are sweet but not overly, just right, and the texture of them is fantastic. They honestly don't taste like they've no wheat in them. I'm amazed at how they've managed to get this texture without using wheat and they are really fresh tasting.

The American Muffin Co. supplies Asda, Sainsburts, Tesco and Waitrose in the UK and order online on their store. These muffins are a real treat. They taste fabulously fresh with great ingredients. It was hard to choose a favourite! I really liked the mini blueberry muffins, great as a snack. The chocolate brownies were amazing as well, incredibly fresh and chocolately. Check out their range on store. They also do regular muffins and cakes, and flapjacks (which I'll try if they don't contain wheat!) and an egg-free range. This company know how to bake cakes, so be sure to try them!

The Cake & Crumb are a mother and daughter operation. Lorraine and Jenni run a gluten-free and wheat-free artisan bakery. They make handmade speciality breads and cakes and are based in Monaghan. They also have a range of mixes so you can bake their goodies at home. Their strapline is "gluten free, wheat free, guilt free!" I tried their brown bread mix which included pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower kernels. It was very easy to make. Just mix with water and some oil, stir together and put into a well-greased loaf pan and pop in the oven for 50 minutes or until golden brown.

What I like about this bread was the fact that it was brown bread, plus it had the seeds included. It also stayed fresh for a good few days, which often isn't the case with wheat-free and gluten-free bread. It was very tasty, fresh and doughy. It was a good wheat-free bread mix in my opinion. However, I always feel with wheat-free and gluten-free bread that it lacks the "full" factor. You need to eat a few slices before it fills you up! I'm looking forward to trying their other mixes - chocolate brownie, madeira mix and shortcrust pastry. I'll report back once I've done so!

You can order The Cake and Crumb's products online and they often attend fairs and markets. Cake and Crumb products are also available in Supervalu Monaghan, SuperValu Johnstown Navan, McArdles 'The Marshes' Dundalk and McAteers The Food House Dundalk. The following are the markets they are at: every week from Monaghan Farmers Markets, 1st Sat of the month Slane Market, 2nd month Kells market and last Sat of each month Sage and Stone Duleek. Their cakes look fabulous, so if I'm ever in Monaghan I'll be sure to stop by! Keep up the good work Lorraine and Jenni! You can also find them on Facebook.

Eating healthy, while still maintaining a wheat-free and gluten-free lifestyle isn't always easy. Eat Natural do a great range of snack bars. You'll be amazed at the variety! Almonds, apricots and a yoghurt coating or how does brazils, sultanas, almonds and hazelnuts sound? Or if that doesn't whet your appetite, try the blueberries, pistachious and yoghurt coating. Or if you still fancy a bit of chocolate, you can have cranberries, macadamias and dark chocolate. Seriously there is 7 choices, so depending on your mood...choose your bar! I like the almond, cherries and yogurt one, plus the dark chocolate bar. Very tasty and I liked that I was packing in the essential fatty acids and omega 3s in the form of a bar! All made with the best, wholesome ingredients and none of those nasty additives. All bars are wheat free and gluten free and are ok for vegetarians too. Packed with nuts and seeds, these bars are a great pick me up! Enjoy them when you are on the go. Eat Natural do cereals too, so I'll report back once I've tried them. Available in most good health stores and some supermarkets.

I'd been meaning to try Bay restaurant in Clontarf for a while, so finally got around to it one evening last week with some friends. The menu was recently mentioned on "Operation Transformation" as it details each dish by low GI, dairy free, yeast free, gluten free, wheat free, low in sugar etc. Actually there is so much detail on the menu and with the colour coding, it is nearly like a game! There is brilliant variety for people with special dietary requirements including those that are weight conscious, and it saves you from interrogating the waitress about what's in each dish. Bay believe that healthy lifestyle anchors wellbeing, boosts energy & vitality. Their philosophy is to create seasonal, daily delivered fresh and affordable cuisine. Their new menu design is intended to offer an experience in which guests can have a healthy guide that caters for all dietary needs & conscious eating, while still maintaining full flavoured dishes. When I eventually figured out what I could eat by looking at the options that didn’t have wheat, I placed my order. There were 3 of us, so we shared a "full" portion of chicken wings between us & it was plenty. We got 4/5 wings each. They were tasty, sauce was a little thick on them but nice. For the main course, I order the beef burger, which had melted cheedar cheese, bacon, tomato, onion, bay’s relish and chips. You can have regular or coeliac chips. I also asked for the burger without the bun and they gave me the burger on gluten free bread too. It was very tasty and no stomach issues with it. The atmosphere was nice with great views. If I had to have a complaint, it wasn’t about the food, there was a singer and a backing track playing and it was really loud. We are young people and had to shout at each other, I felt like an ‘oul one!

I’d be interested in trying Bay’s brunch menu some weekend. So, I will revert back once I've done that. See what’s on offer on their site. Enjoy!

Hot home-made cookies from the oven, what a delight! I’ve never tried buying ready-made cookie dough that you simply cut up and put in the oven and wait till they are golden brown. Well, I’ll never look back! I tried Gookies, and they were one of the most delicious things I ever tried. I tried 3 flavours - milk chocolate, triple chocolate, cranberry & white chocolate. All delicious, but my there was a favourite and that’s the cranberry & white chocolate. What’s great about the cookie dough rolls is that it is refrigerated but can also be frozen and cooked from frozen. They are easy to bake and very convenient. Each 320g roll makes 6 large cookies or 12 smaller cookies. I opted for the 12 smaller, as that gives you more treats in the cookie jar!

Gookies is the brainchild of Muriel Coughlan who is based in East Cork. Muriel has created these fabulous gluten free and wheat free delights by using gluten free flour, Irish butter, Callebaut Belgian chocolate and free range eggs. Gookies are also yeast free and free from preservatives. Gookies are available to buy on Local Markets and you can also follow Gookies on Facebook. Go on, treat yourself, you won’t be disappointed!

It's even more delightful when you can find a restaurant in Dublin that does good tapas that also caters for coeliacs or those living wheat free. I found just the place. Salamanca on Dame street do a delightful array of tapas dishes from meat based to vegetarian. What's very refreshing is when you open a menu and you see (c) at the bottom of it. You know that this denotes dishes that are suitable for coeliacs which means it saves you from asking awkward questions. This can be particularly good if you are in a Spanish restaurant as sometimes the staff can be Spanish too. When you say wheat-free or ask does it have wheat in it etc, they don't understand you! I ventured to Salamanca for a lunch and they've a great deal on for a lunch special - 3 tapas for €10. And might I add, they are good portions, 3 is plenty, you'll be full. I tried the paella which had (c) beside it and it was fabulous - rich, deep flavour with rice, peppers, onions, chicken and chorizo. Very tasty. I also tried the chicken wings which were hot and spicy and very good too. And of course there had to be a potato option, so it was a toss up between the traditional tortilla and the patatas bravas, I opted for the latter. Very good too. I'd highly recommend this place, the staff were friendly, the service was quick (good for lunchtime!) and the value was great, plus it goes without saying, I didn't have to ask any awkward questions. Have a look at Salamanca's menu and enjoy! I'll be back!

Gluten-free breadcrumbs aren't easy to get your hands on. I did find some though, Hale n'Hearty do great breadcrumbs that are versatile and easy to use. Hale n'Hearty make these delicious breadcrumbs by baking gluten free bread and then crumbing it, resulting in crisp, golden breadcrumbs ready to use. Made out of wholemeal rice flour, corn flour, organic vegetable oil, rice flour, guar gum, yeast, sea salt, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid. I used them to make chicken kiev. Simply get your chicken breasts and butterfly them and fill with garlic butter, close over, then have a plate of beaten egg and a plate of breadcrumbs. Simply dip the chicken breast in the egg, then immediately roll in the breadcrumbs and they are ready to cook for 25mins in the oven. Want something light to eat in the morning that still has some nutrition? Honey Rice Flakies from Rude Health are your answer. If you don't want anything too heavy, these are a good choice. Crispy rice flakes with a drizzle of honey. Rude Health have such a great range of products that are all in the healthy category, so it's good to know that you'll be getting nutrition in the mornings. Honey rice flakies are made from grains of rice, every flake is actually a grain of grain. They lightly steam and flake the rice, which brings out the flavour and it also preserves the nutrients. Lightly toasted and then a drizzle of honey is put on them, giving them a hint of sweetness. This cereal is gluten-free, wheat free, low fat, has no added salt , and no refined sugars. Plus is only 126 kcal per serving with skimmed milk. This cereal is very light and you may need a few bowls to fill you. I also used them to make some fruit and nut bars and the rice flakes worked great in them!

The range includes Special Flakes, Special Flakes with Red Berries, Fibre Flakes and Pure Oats. I was pleasantly surprised to be honest. The Special Flakes reminded me of what Kellogg's Special K tastes like. Crispy flakes of rice and corn with fortified vitamins. Really tasty crunchy flakes which provided a good filling breakfast. The Special Flakes with Red Berries were delicious, the cherry, raspberries and strawberries add a distinctive flavour which is very nice. The Fibre Flakes are similar to Kellogg's Bran Flakes. So, it's great to know that when shopping the supermarket aisles you don't feel completely left out of the cereal aisle, you know that alternatives are available!
