What's That Clicking Noise My Car is Making?

When a vehicle’s axles are bad, they may produce a vibrating or clicking noise. This could mean that the bearings need to be greased (repacked) or the boots that hold the grease are busted. Most boots and bearings nowadays are sealed and replaced as a unit. Ideally, the car should be put on a rack to have this done, but since Wheel Fix It, LLC is a mobile repair shop, the car is jacked up, the wheels are removed and jack stands are placed under car as a safety precaution.

Misconceptions about Front End Alignment

I have recently and in the past heard people say they have a vibration and need to have the car’s front end aligned. Now if the alignment was so far off, say a bent part, this could be true. Vibration, shaking, or steering wheel wobble is caused by many things but not the alignment.

Causes for this would be one or a combination of the following: tires out of round, the balance of the tires, bent rims, warped rotors, a bad steering component, and/or a bad strut/shock. While working in a shop as an alignment tech for years, I saw all of these on a daily basis—most common problem being a bad tire and a tire out of balance. If a tire is perfectly round, in balance, with a tight front end, the car or truck should ride smoothly down the road. It still may drift or pull. (A pull is detected if while driving down a straight road and momentarily letting go of steering wheel, the vehicle drifts into the next lane by itself.)

Regardless of a bad shock or the alignment being off, the reason to have the front end aligned would be to correct tire wear problems, keep a vehicle from drifting or pulling, and increase fuel mileage (there’s less friction if the vehicle does not have to drag a tire just make it roll). We are only talking about small degrees of angle here, not 45 degrees.

There are a few important angles when measuring and adjusting a front end. The first being camber. This would be how far the upper portion of the tire is leaning, whether it is in/out or positive/negative. If this angle was off from specification, the vehicle may have a pull or uneven tire wear from inside to out. An incorrect reading may be caused by a bent suspension part, worn steering part, or vehicle sag on the springs due to age. The next angle to check would be caster. This angle does not wear tires. It would cause a pull. Basically this angle is a measurement of placement or degrees of separation between the upper and lower ball joint. If angles vary from driver to passenger side more than .5 degrees, the vehicle may pull. This would be caused from one tire being forced forward more than the other. The most important angle after the others have been set would be toe in or toe out. You've seen all these angles if you've seen a toy Matchbox car that has been stepped on. They just don't seem to roll well with a bent axle or tires pointing in opposite directions. Toe would be the direction the center of the tire is pointing on a centered basis of the vehicle. If this angle is off it will wear tires quickly. If it is far enough off, it can cause darting when the steering wheel is barely touched.

How Often Should I Change the Oil in My Vehicle?

Oil is a vital part of your engine's longevity and daily reliability. Oil lubricates, cools, and protects all internal moving components. There are many types and brands of oils on the market, some claiming to be better than others. Always follow recommended oil usage from the owner’s manual especially in newer cars.

Increase the grade of oil (thickness) on high-mileage vehicles. Motor oils range from 0w-20 to 20w-50. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and vice versa.

New cars such as the Honda Civic may call for the 0w-20. This is because tolerances between bearing surfaces have been greatly reduced with advancing technology. The need for a thinner oil has evolved with that. For instance, an old V8 truck would have required a 10w-30 oil and now that mileage and engine wear have increased, the tolerance has increased as well. So, a thicker oil to take up the space is needed.

Different brands are also recommended by manufactures due to the additive qualities they possess in protecting different metals in an engine. There are also synthetic and conventional oils. The main thing to remember about the difference in these two types is molecular structure. Conventional oil is made from natural earth products and are shaped and sized differently—thus they break down under stress and heat at different rates. Synthetic oil is manmade which means all molecules are the same and break down at the same time.

A common assumption that synthetic oils last 10,000 to 15,000 miles is untrue. Oil that has been used that long has worn down and sludge has already built up in the engine. The same is true with conventional oil. Driving conditions may vary the frequency for oil changes, but sticking with 3,000 miles on conventional oil and 5,000 miles on synthetic oil is a safe bet for change interval.

There are other factors such as climate that need to be considered in determining what would be best for your particular engine. Be sure to ask a mechanic who is ASE certified in engine repair. He or she would have the knowledge regarding what oils are best.

Air Conditioning Repair

It's that time of year when things are starting to heat up. That means you may get in your car, flip the air conditioner on, and plan to be cool by the time you reach the interstate. However, after a few minutes you notice you are still sweating, so you turn up the fan speed only to realize there's warm air coming from your car's A/C vents. Uh, oh. Now what?

Your unit could need a simple recharge of its freon, but it may require a repair like the one I performed on a BMW this past week. The compressor, drying unit, and hose had to be replaced. The old refrigerant had to be vacuumed out, filtered through a machine, and returned to the system along with some new refrigerant.

Only a certified mechanic should work on your car's air conditioning. Over charging the system can damage it; under charging means it will not cool sufficiently. Leaks or problems need to be found and repaired so the A/C system will last longer. Otherwise, you may face a more expensive repair later.

Tips for Attempting to Restart Flooded Vehicles

The muddy flood water has receded enough for people who were evacuated during the storm to get back home (those who still have homes) and access the damage. And, it’s time to see if any of the vehicles that were flooded will ever run again. Some will—some won’t, but we can at least try.

Hydrolocking a vehicle is when the water in the engine cylinder is attempting to be compressed instead of gas/air mixture. This can bend rods and blow gaskets. DO NOT attempt to start a flooded vehicle before you take the following steps or else major engine damage could result.

There is still hope for water-soaked vehicles. Here are a few tips about how to safely restart a flooded car without causing further damage. This needs to be done ASAP so no rust is formed on any internal metal parts.

Leave all doors, the trunk, and hood open. Underneath the carpet, all vehicles have a rubber drain plug in each floor pan that can be removed to assist in draining the water.
If water rose over the hood, all systems will have water in them. Oils float on top off water ,so drain plugs need to be removed to let the water come out first. Let the water drain for a while before replacing fluids.
Spark plugs need to be removed. Leave the plugs out while you take the next steps.
Turn the engine over by hand or with the starter for a few seconds.
The intake manifold is also holding water and can be sucked out.
The transmission pan needs to be removed and the filter replaced.
Power steering system needs to be flushed by removing return line and filling up with fresh P/S fluid. The pump will do the flushing for you when started.
Brake fluid has to be flushed; it is a hydraulic fluid that absorbs moisture.
The cooling system is a sealed unit and should not require service or draining.
After all this is done, add fresh fluids, insert new spark plugs, and try to start the vehicle. If you are successful, give a loud victory yell and let the car idle for 10- 15 minutes.
Check all fluid conditions. A system with water in it will look like chocolate or strawberry milk. If this is the case, you will need to repeat the flushing process again and again until the fluids look the same as they did when poured in.

Flooding in Nashville

Living in Nashville, I know first-hand how vast and horrible the devastation from last weekend’s flood is. Thankfully, our house is at the top of a hill and was not affected. However, many families all over Music City have lost their homes, businesses, automobiles, and everything they owned.

In Cheatham County where I live, six houses were destroyed near Kingston Springs Road at the intersection between the middle school and the high school. Kingston Springs Elementary School, where my son attends was flooded so badly that I doubt the students will go back to class for the rest of this term.

A Word About Car Extended Warranties

Thinking about a used car extended warranty? Nervous about what's under the hood? Used car dealers are feeling your pain all the way to the bank. In an ironic twist, "pre-owned vehicle" dealers have found a way to profit from their bad reputation.

No, they're not just selling overpriced used car extended warranties anymore. They're charging a 10% to 25% markup on used cars "certified" (by them) not to be pieces of junk. The accompanying "certified" used car warranties in fact usually carry much less protection than the best used car warranties, which you can buy yourself online. Who needs a used car warranty if your jalopy is a "certified" machine?

But even paying 10% to 25% more won't eliminate risk. Thorough extended warranties for used cars are necessary, "certified" or not. In some cases, a half-hearted inspection means the certification may not be worth the paper it's written on. Used car problems often only appear months or years after purchase. That's why even for mint used cars, used car extended warranties are essential.

Worse, "certified" used cars don't always come with any extended used car warranty coverage. When a "certified" used car warranty is included, it usually has much less coverage than a new car warranty. Even most standard pre-owned vehicle extended warranties offer much more protection than most "certified" used car warranties.

You can almost always do better on your own. An independent inspection and a used car extended warranty provide better peace of mind, often at a lower price.
