TATA nano: All set to roll out

TATA nano, also said to be known as the world's cheapest car, which has been designed inn-order to fulfill the dream of owning a car for all the middle and lower class families. Well, as I know, TATA nano is the only Indian car to create such a huge hype before its release world wide. M&M plugs into REVA

WD is back into blogging after a long time, with an exciting and completely new stuff regarding the REVA electric car and its diversification in the automobile industry.

The world is going GREEN and hence the India's largest utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra is all charged up to drive into the electric vehicle market. On 26th MAY 2010, M&M has announced the acquiring of a majority stake in REVA of about 55.2%. This is going to become a huge benefactor for M&M, since with REVA, M&M will also get the electric vehicle technology at a low cost. This technology is aimed at applying not only for cars, but also for light commercial vehicles and buses.

Well, as a result of buying a huge stake in REVA, M&M renames RECC as Mahindra REVA Electric Car Company(MRECC). The 2 new models of REVA which are already shown for display at Frankfurt motor show in the year 2009, and that are to be focused to the most in the future are, the Reva NXR and NXG.

Range, speed, safety and interior specifications all fall along the lines of a new generation of battery electric vehicles. The IC (inter-City) model has a top speed of 104 km/h (65 mph) and a range of 160 km (99 mi). The interior is of a far higher grade when compared to the earlier REVA quadracycle and the back seats now comfortably fit 2 adults.

The NXR has some unusual features, one being its Revive battery charging system. Telematic remote access to the car's on-board Energy Management System allows REVA to analyse a near depleted battery upon request. Their support centre can individually determine the battery condition within seconds and allow access to the remaining charge. This serves as a virtual back-up battery while minimising the risk of damage to the powerpack due to depletion.

NXG production is scheduled for 2011. The NXG will also feature REVA's patented drive-train technology and the Revive system. The two-seater sports car is expected to stand out for performance and speed.

The Four door GHOST(Rolls Royce) saloon has been launched in INDIA. Its going to become a new target for the mighty Indian billionaires.

Priced at Rs 2.5 crore, which is variable according to the level of personal customisation, the new Rolls is smaller and lighter by 190 kg than its big brother the Phantom. It follows similar design lines and is manufactured alongside at the company’s Goodwood facility. It is powered by a 6.6 litre V12 engine that will propel you to 100 kmph in 4.9 seconds and give you a mileage of 4.87 km per litre in urban areas. The Ghost was launched internationally at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2010.

By the way, here is an interesting stuff, that for interiors the car uses Malabar wood sourced from India.

India’s advantage as an ideal cost-competitive hub is the key

The 2008 version of auto expo in New Delhi, which saw unveiling of world’s cheapest car Nano by Tata Motors, catapulted India’s image from just being an auto market to emerging auto-manufacturing giant. This faith of global players in the Indian auto market was further confirmed at the just concluded biennial mega event in New Delhi which saw Japanese auto majors Toyota and Honda unveiling their global strategic models, both compact cars, especially designed and developed for the Indian market.

And this was not all. Be it the mass market players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors or those keen on tapping the fast-growing luxury segment like Skoda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi or Volkswagen — all were there at the mega show announcing India launch of their latest models and unveiling their concepts.

One automaker that presented itself as a ‘complete brand’ was General Motors, which is not only making efforts to tap the maximum selling compact segment but is also looking at the luxury segment.

Through the highly competitive pricing of its new compact car ‘Beat’, it could have triggered a price war in the mass selling segment.

The growing clout of Indian automakers was clearly underlined by a recent survey by leading consultancy firm KPMG, which said that global automotive market share winners over the next five years would include various new Chinese and Indian vehicle manufacturers, along with leaders like Hyundai/Kia, Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen.

From the current ranking of 11th largest passenger car market, India will jump to the seventh spot in the next five years. And it is not just about cars; India is also world’s second largest two-wheeler market and fourth largest commercial vehicle market, besides emerging as a quality component manufacturing base with low-cost advantage. So, auto experts were not at all surprised with Honda’s decision to export crucial components from its new plant in Rajasthan to its headquarters in Japan, while Hyundai and Suzuki Motors have already made India as their export hubs.

Concept vehicles

For the record, the week-long show, jointly organised by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) since 1986, saw participation of over 2,100 exhibitors and launch of 25 new models (the biggest ever so far), besides unveiling of over two-dozen concept vehicles. It was a huge hit as far as footfalls were concerned as almost 20-lakh auto-enthusiasts, apart from those eyeing serious business opportunities, witnessed the extravaganza.

The auto show also helped companies gauge the mood of their Indian customers and accordingly plan their future launches in the booming market that recorded growth despite economic slowdown even as the markets in the U.S. and Europe fared badly.

One segment that has caught everybody’s attention is the scope of battery-operated cars. It was precisely for this reason that some major carmakers like General Motors, Renault, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki announced their plans to bring “green cars” in the near future. India is also being seen as a major source of e-cars for global markets.

On the other hand, the commercial vehicle segment saw global players like Volvo, Navistar, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mercedes-Benz renewing their focus on the Indian market, thanks to the boom in the infrastructure sector and consistent economic growth.

India is also poised to emerge as a major destination for hi-end biking, besides consolidating its position as mass bike market and its major exporter.

The entry of iconic Harley Davidson brand and Ducati bikes in India are examples of it, while other players like Ducati, Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda are bullish on the idea.

Similarly, the presence of component manufacturers in huge numbers, which included dedicated stalls from countries like China, Germany and Italy did not surprise Indian industry.

Besides seeing huge domestic potential, emergence of India as a manufacturing hub for exports has prompted them to make a beeline for the sub-continent. Interestingly, the domestic auto component industry is targeting a six-fold growth in exports by 2016.

Pointing out that component sourcing by both domestic and global auto majors turned out to be a major activity at this year’s show, ACMA President Jayant Davar said, “India’s advantage as an ideal cost-competitive hub is the key, and this is going to prop up component exports in a big way in the years to come.” From around $20 billion in 2009, 20 per cent of which would be exports, Indian auto component industry is likely to touch $45 billion, of which 50 per cent would be from exports.

‘The new vehicle will meet the challenges thrown by heavy urban traffic’

The Bajaj Auto Pulsar 135LS vehicle was launched at a glittering programme in Vijayawada on Sunday amidst a dance performance by artists to suit the mood of the occasion.

The first launch of this initial version was stated to be in 2001 and the latest came out with added features to win the favour of customers.

Equipped with a light-weight yet rigid frame and aided by Nitrox shock absorbers, the new vehicle from the Bajaj Auto would meet the challenges of traffic thrown by urban heavy traffic, said Bajaj officials.

Addressing a press conference on the occasion, Bajaj Regional Manager Sadanand Swamy said that with the addition of the latest version, the company went another step ahead in enhancing the pleasure of biking to the customers.

He said that the light sports vehicle was the first of its kind bike being introduced for the first time in the country.

It has got the state of the art 4-valve DTS-I engine which delivers 13.5 ps power.

Company’s vision

Mr. Swamy said that the Pulsar brand is strongly associated with the sports segment in this country and the company’s vision is to make India a country of bikers from a country of commuters.

He said that the bike will be manufactured from the Chakan Plant and will have a capacity of 35,000 bikes per month. The price of Pulsar 135LS is Rs. 52,025 ex-showroom.

Maruti introduces Eeco

Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday launched its brand new multi-purpose vehicle ‘Eeco’ that has been specifically designed for India. The spacious ‘family car’ comes with a flexi design, offering 7-seater and 5-seater options, and is priced between Rs. 2.59-lakh and Rs. 2.89-lakh, a move that could trigger price war in the entry-level segment.

The car comes with a new 1200cc petrol engine that promises 73 bhp power and 15.1 km a litre of fuel efficiency, while meeting Bharat Stage-IV emission norms. “Our engineers have specially developed the Eeco with new powerful engine and a new transmission system to meet the diverse consumer aspirations that look for a vehicle that fit a large family and at the same time provides flexibility for dual use,” Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said after unveiling the new car at the 10th auto expo here.

Mr. Nakanishi said the new car had a superior suspension that allowed for a smooth and comfortable ride on rough Indian roads. Stating that the company had invested Rs. 60 crore in developing the new car, he said their team of engineers worked on the car for over two years, subjecting it to various rigorous tests regarding safety, stability, durability and passenger comfort. “Eeco represents the growing expertise of Maruti Suzuki engineers to develop vehicles in India which is also in line with parent Suzuki Motor Corporation’s vision of turning India into a global hub for small car design,” he added.

Maruti is also planning to unveil a concept electric version of the new vehicle, Eeco Charge, that will be showcased during the Commonwealth Games later this year. The company has, however, ruled out introduction of diesel or alternative fuel variant of Eeco in near future, neither it is going to phase out its another MUV, Versa.

Green is the theme at the New Delhi auto expo

With concern over vehicular emissions rising, auto majors are fast shifting their focus towards greener electric and hybrid vehicles, besides providing customers the option of owning a car run by cheaper and low-emission fuels such as CNG and LPG. Signs of things to come are clearly visible at the 10th Auto Expo where almost every carmaker has showcased the future green offerings.

Be it the mass-market players — Maruti, Hyundai, Tata Motors — or the foreign auto major — General Motors, Toyota Honda — all are betting big on green cars, not only for India but also for the overseas market. At the expo, Toyota has launched the latest version of world’s largest selling hybrid car, Prius, in the Indian market, besides introducing Altis CNG and Innova CNG, besides showcasing Camry hybrid.

“The Prius today is the world’s most successful hybrid with cumulative sales of nearly 15-lakh units.

“We will continue to popularise environment-friendly vehicles in India to further our efforts to help save the environment,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor Deputy Managing Director Sandeep Singh told The Hindu.

Similarly, its Japanese counterpart Honda Motor has showcased its concept sporty hybrid car, ‘CR-Z’, besides announcing plans to focus more on hybrid and alternative fuel technologies.

Another auto major that has made a strong statement through the expo is the U.S.-based General Motors that has unveiled the electric version of compact car Chevrolet Spark, developed in technical collaboration with Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company that is providing battery technology to GM for introducing a range of electric cars for Indian and overseas markets.

GM has showcased the much-awaited Hybrid Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability, Aveo CNG and Spark LPG.

“The government should seriously think about providing incentives to owners of cars driven on alternative fuel and cut high taxes and duties to encourage adoption of such eco-friendly vehicles. The government needs to incentivise both producers and consumers of eco-friendly cars,” said General Motors India President and Managing Director Karl Slym.

Another major attraction of the auto show has been the launch of Hyundai’s i10 electric, which is likely to be introduced in India next year, besides tapping the huge potential for greener vehicles in overseas markets, particularly in developing countries.

Similarly, India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has showcased hybrid concept of SX4 sedan and electric version of the newly-launched van Eeco.

Tata Motors is also planning electric version of Nano, targeted at overseas markets.

Apart from carmakers, manufacturers of bikes and buses have also their keenness in using greener technologies in their vehicles.

BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz showcase their new products

NEW DELHI: Luxury carmakers have unveiled high-end sedans and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) at the ongoing Auto Expo here, eyeing growing sales in the segment. While Germany’s BMW has launched Gran Turismo, X6M and 760Li, Audi has introduced the powerful diesel SUV Q7 4.2 TDI, besides unveiling the limited edition of A6 2.7 TDI to celebrate 100 years of the luxury carmaker.

The limited edition BMW Gran Turismo is priced at Rs.63 lakh and its 100 units would be available for sale. Similarly, Coupe X6 M and BMW 760 Li is priced over Rs.1 crore, while X6 M will come at Rs.1.30 crore and 760 Li at Rs.1.29 crore. BMW plans to launch MMW X1 by the end of 2010 that would be manufactured at the Chennai facility. BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said the company would bring in more investments in India through further capital investment in its plant to boost production and also begin financial services. Significantly, BMW became the top luxury car-seller in India in 2009 by selling 3,619 units, securing 40 per cent market share. Similarly, Audi’s A6 2.7 TDI will be available at Rs.37-lakh. “In 2009, Audi India registered a 58 per cent growth. This success was attained through the launch of the A6, Q5, Q7 and expansion of footprint across India through new dealership openings in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kochi,” said Audi India Managing Director Benoit Tiers. Audi is expecting to sell 2,300 units this year, which will be up about 40 per cent from last year.

Another luxury carmaker, Mercedes-Benz showcased two new cars — SLS AMG Desert Gold priced at around Rs.2-crore, besides displaying the M-Class Luxury edition as well as the E-Coupe.

Volkswagen has also unveiled its high-end luxury car Phaeton, priced at Rs.75 lakh, while its Czech subsidiary Skoda has introduced much-awaited SUV Yeti. “Indian customers of Phaeton would have the option of visiting the facility in Germany and see their cars being manufactured and customised,” said Volkswagen Group Sales India, Member of the Board of Directors, Neeraj Garg.

French car manufacturer Renault is planning to launch two models in India in 2011, which will be rolled out from its upcoming plant in Chennai. “We will be launching our luxury car ‘Fluence’ and our crossover ‘Koleos’ by mid-2011. All these cars will be produced at our Chennai facility,” said Renault India General Manager and Managing Director Marc Nassif.

Fiat plans to develop small car

Italian auto maker Fiat on Wednesday said it planned to develop a small car, specifically for the Indian market, although it had deferred the launch of its super hatchback Bravo in India.

“Fiat plans to develop a small car for the Indian market in Italy with the help of an Indian team. It will be launched here with our joint venture partner Tata Motors with about 80-85 per localisation,” Fiat India President and CEO Rajeev Kapoor told reporters at the auto expo.

He, however, did not specify the time of completion of the development of the car.

The company has also put on backburner its plans to launch Bravo in India, he said. “Looking at the availability of the number of various cars in India, we have decided to postpone the launch of Bravo. We will keep evaluating the launch time for India,” Mr. Kapoor added.

Bravo was originally scheduled to be launched in the beginning of last year.

Fiat India also expects to double its sales volume in calendar 2010 to 46,000 units from 23,000 units sold last year.

It is also starting exports of its sedan Linea and hatchbacks Grande Punto and Palio Stile to Nepal and Sri Lanka shortly.

Hyundai unveils electric vehicle

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) on Wednesday unveiled the electric version of its popular compact car i10, which it plans to sell in the Indian market in near future as zero-emission urban commuter vehicle.

“We hope that the heightened interest in electric vehicles (EVs) will present us with a huge opportunity to bring in this technology to the Indian market in the near future,” HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena said at the auto expo here.

Without giving any specific timeframe for the launch of i10 Electric, Mr. Saxena said: “Growing demand and awareness among consumers for green cars have inspired us to introduce the electric version of i10, which was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009.” Hyundai is planning to first introduce the electric car in the South Korean market this year.

Powered by 49kWh electrical motor and a 16kWh battery, the i10 electric uses advanced ‘LiPoly’ (Lithium-Ion-Polymer) technology with numerous advantages over other batteries, including better efficiency. The low kerb weight and the evolved battery technology give the i10 Electric a driving range of 160 km on a single charge with a top speed of 130 km an hour.

The i10 Electric offers dual recharging cycles. Charging at home through a 220V outlet is estimated to take about five hours for a 100 per cent capacity, while with a 413V outlet, an industrial strength current, the battery can be recharged up to 85 per cent of its capacity within 15 minutes.

At its pavilion ‘Trust and Innovation’, HMIL has showcased its future vehicles including high performance ‘Genesis Coupe’ (the sports variant of Genesis sedan), and its luxurious van ‘H1’ with a choice of nine or 12 seats.

Tata Motors on Tuesday previewed ’Aria’, a cross-over between a multi-utility and sports utility vehicle, at the Auto Expo here and billed it as a four-wheeler built for Indians by Indian engineers. The company, however, did not say when it plans to commercially launch Aria. Tata Motors’ current line up of SUVs and MUVs include Safari and Sumo Grande.

After unveiling the concept of its forthcoming global compact car Etios at the auto expo here, Japanese car major Toyota on Thursday announced the availability of its latest generation hybrid car ‘Prius’ in India, besides launching the CNG version of its popular sedan Corolla Altis.

Priced between Rs.26.55 lakh and Rs.27.86 lakh, the third generation Prius, which became the world’s first mass produced hybrid vehicle in 1997, comes with 1.8 litre petrol engine with a battery of 60 kilowatt. This will have three driving modes — Power mode, Eco mode and Electric vehicle mode (battery). Prius, which in Latin means ‘to go before,’ is ‘equipped with the latest version of its pioneering technology — Toyota Hybrid System II (also called Hybrid Synergy Drive) — that has achieved world-leading fuel efficiency.

“Through the launch of Prius, Toyota is keen to demonstrate its commitment to offer the latest eco-friendly automotive technology to its customers in India. Prius today is the most successful hybrid in the world with cumulative sales of nearly 15-lakh. We will continue to popularise environmental-friendly vehicles in India to further our efforts to help save the environment,” said Toyota Kirloskar Motor Deputy Managing Director Sandeep Singh.

Prius will be imported as completely built-up unit from Japan. We have ordered 200 units for India that will be sold during March-December 2010, while the bookings have already started. Prius will be available only in 10 cities, including the metros and smaller cities like Chandigarh, Pune and Ahmedabad, while the waiting period for the hybrid will be about two months.

Global automobile giants converged here as the 10th edition of the Auto Expo opened on Tuesday, rolling out an array of cars mostly the small ones with a green theme.

In the world’s second fastest growing economy, commercial vehicle manufacturers too want their pie of the market and would unveil their product lines during the week-long auto fair, billed as the biggest in the world in terms of footfalls.

Close to two million auto enthusiasts and business visitors are expected to throng the fair, which is about to witness 50 new launches, including 10 of them global.

Giants like Toyota, Honda, Suzuki and General Motors are all here but most of them are unveiling their small and concept cars, high on fuel efficiency.

“The Indian Auto Expo has been gaining stature with international original manufacturers launching their global models as they do in other auto shows in the world,” Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President Pawan Goenka said.

Honda and Toyota launched their concept small cars with an eye on growing Indian market. They also want to use India as their global manufacturing hub, mostly for small cars.

Toyota unveiled concept small car ‘Etios’ specially developed for the Indian market. The company which has a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group, is investing about Rs. 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility in Bangalore to roll out the car by early 2011.

“Our tagline represents the choice of India for the global premiere of Etios concept, following which, export to other countries will be evaluated,” Toyota Motor Corp Vice Chairman Kazuo Okamoto said.

He said the Indian market, expected to grow to 4 million units by 2015, is important for the Japanese auto major.

Maruti Suzuki unveiled a small multi-purpose concept vehicle (MPV) as India’s number one car manufacturer wants to create a new segment. The concept vehicle has been developed by Maruti Suzuki at its research and development centre.

German auto major Volkswagen introduced small 1.2 litre car Polo with a promise to launch sedan version on the same platform in the second half of this year. “The Polo stands for German engineering and top technology. It is lively young cosmopolitan made in India car,” Volkswagen AG Member of the Board of management Jochem Heizmann said.

Two-wheelers were not to be left behind. Iconic US motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson announced a plan to bring 12 motorcycles in the Indian market priced between Rs. 6.95 lakh and Rs. 34.95 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).

Munjals-promoted Hero Electric launched three electric scooters priced between Rs. 17,900 and Rs. 32,796.

New Volkswagen POLO

The Volkswagen has started its own bit of playing the role in the Indian market by introducing its new POLO, which is going to be manufactured at its first manufacturing plant in Chakan near Pune in India. plant. The company had landed only two of its models, the Passat and the Jetta in India, which often we don't really see too much. But, they have a hand full of dealers. The Volkswagen really needs something to kick-start its Indian innings.

By the end of the year, when the brand new facility comes on line, the POLO seems to be the stuff that's going to roll out. This is the all new 5th generation POLO.
Like all Volkswagen designs, the POLO too shares the strong expressive nose. Simplicity has been the main styling theme of the Polo. It has an elegant and expressive styling.

In my own words, what I could say is that, Polo is not a cute car, this is not a cheesy car. It is a handsome, muscular and a solid car. For my eyes, this is considered to be one of the most handsome among the small cars that exist today.
There are a number of interesting details regarding the Polo. For instance, consider its hatch, if you hold and press the VW round, the hatch gets opened. This is in a similar fashion to the Passat. It's boot space exists in two layers. So, you can hide some expensive and important stuff under the tray separating the two layers. The boot volume is 280 liters, which is smaller when compared with the Skoda Fabia, and the space inside is also a little tighter.

Finally, it can be considered as having Best in class interiors. The Indian variants will alo get the dual toned dashboard, including the features like ABS, twin air bags, and the Electronic stability control, which is generally found missing in the Indian cars. The company plans to launch Volkswagen Polo in highly competitive price range of Rs 4 to 5 lakhs. So, be ready to move on a POLO.

In the present days, competing with time is considered to be the most common criteria. The same goes on with the context of high speeds of the newly emerging bikes. The 2-wheeler segment based companies are moving forward accordingly and are also considering the tastes and craze of the present youth as the main criteria.

Keeping the views on trends of the current generation youth, "Hero Honda", one of the largest 2-wheeler manufacturer in India, has at last unveiled its new Karizma(FI)-ZMR into the market.

The routine carburetor has been replaced with the fuel injection technology, which is shortly called as the FI. This bike can achieve a speed of about 0-60kmph just in 3.7 seconds. This is because of its "Spark plug Transistorized Ignition System".

The ZMR has undergone many changes when compared with its prior model, Karizma-R. Both the wheels are having Disk brakes. The Kick start option has been deceased and is only available in "self start". The old Air-cooled engine has been replaced with the Oil-cooled engine. Finally, this lead to the increase in the weight of the bike.

The IGRS shock absorbers are considered to be one of the peaks in the technical aspects of the bike, and also can be adjustible.

While the Hunk, and CBZ-Xtreme reviels 13.15 KW (17.6 bhp/17.9ps) of power at 8500 RPM, the new Karizma can achieve such at 7000 RPM itself. Thus, the engine life factor is 1.59, which is said to be greater than the counterparts in Hero Honda. Hunk and Xtreme are having only 1.29 as their life factor. Achiever is having 1.37.
