I bought my 1968 VW Crewcab in May 1985 from Boardwalk VW in
Redwood City, CA. It had been the dealer's parts truck for 14
years. The 2nd owner bought it from the dealer, drove it for 3 years,
then traded it back. I took a friend to the dealer to test drive the
new Scirocco and saw the truck as we were driving through the back lot
on the way out. I bought it later that day. It's been an on-going science
project ever since.

My goal has always been to convert the bus to Porsche power as I believe
the VW factory would do it, using as many stock factory parts as
possible and retaining the stock factory look.

The pages of this website detail the trials and tribulations of keeping the bus looking stock but under the covers continually modifying the drive train for more power and the suspension for better handling.

Below is a short history of my modifications, including links to
specific projects.

Motor and Trans
2000:
We bought a totaled 1986 911 with the plan of installing the 3.2 engine and transmission into our '73 911E Targa. This left the stock 2.4E and transmission sitting there, so my Porsche mechanic & I
installed it in the Crewcab. The motor was freshened and converted to 40mm Weber carbs prior to installation. You
can read about the installation here.

2003-2006: When we decided to sell the Targa with the original motor, I swapped the 2.4E motor out of the Crewcab and replaced it with the 3.2 motor and transmission.

2008: Upgraded to carbs and electronic ignition

2015: Swapped motor for a 3.3 79 930 and modified and rebuilt the
tranmission. You can read about the swap here.

Brakes
1993: VW brake upgrade to front & rear disk brakes. You can read about
the conversion here

2011: Fuchs wheel conversion

2021: Converted rear brakes to Boxster S cross-drilled and vented
rotors and Wilwood calipers

Suspension
2000: Albatros front beam custom Koni double adjustable shocks in
front

2006: WEVO Olin 911 single adjustable shocks

2015: Added Eibach 150 lb helper springs and modified rear Impy sway bar
to help with turbo squat

2021: Converted to Porsche 935 front suspension. You can read about the conversion here.

Interior
1989: Changed the front seats to bucket seats and removed the divider panel between the front and rear to creat a walk-thru

2005: First set of custom dash gauges

2008: Custom gas pedal with 3 axis adjust

2009: Replaced bucket seats with Schel seats

2015: Second set of custom dash gauges

2021: Carpet replaced with Porsche perlon and back seat replaced with a flat panel

Pictures here.

Exterior
1993: painted

RC Buses
As a break from working on full sized cars, I also build remote control
cars and trucks. Click here to see the several
RC buses I've built, as well as a car hauler. You can see all my RC projects
here.

As the result of a road bike accident in May 2021, I can no longer drive the
bus. But my dream bus had only one project left -- flaring the rear fenders to allow for larger tires.
