Summer 2013 Picks

I have some random but absolutely amazing pieces from several shops that I am in love with for summer. These are all on my wish list if they were in my size range and budget but mostly size range.

This incredible bathing suit from Nakimuli is all I can think about when I day dream of Chunky Dunk days at the pool. The combination of mesh, a bright colored pattern and the black shinny spandex create a sexy curve on the body.

Domino Dollhouse's Nuclear collect part 1 is out and live! The amazing prints Tracy Broxterman has given us for this collection scream summer. My favorite piece however is in part 2 of the collection coming out next. The Mesh sleeve jacket. IT WILL BE MINE! Stretchy body and mesh sleeves to keep me cool on warm summer nights. I can't wait.

Not sure if you notice a pattern going on here but I am craving bold patterns and bright colors this summer. And Rue 107 is not lacking in any of that. If I am really honest I would put the whole site on this page if we are going off of what I would get. But here are some top faves.

Forever21's polka dot raceback dress has me giddy. While I drool for in your face prints and cuts there is always something great about a fun semi simple but still unique summer dress. Easy to pair with most any shoes and accessories.

And last but never least ASOS Curve continues to bring out amazing pieces that I would give anything to have my wardrobe. I feel like I am the only fat girl without a leather jacket these days. As my husband says I have football player shoulders. So most any jacket made for a woman, even a plus size one, won't fit me. But if I could get one this is the cut and style I would want.

This skirt!! What can I say about it besides this could be the best thing ever. A thick gold band at the bottom of a grey skater skirt is the focal point for this piece and even more I would think for the whole look. In this picture I love how everything else is kept simple and I would do the same. Only on some occasions do I think less is more.

Little Plaid Dress

Well with my last eShakti dress a raging success I took some discount codes and got myself another fabulous dress! I feel all sorts of retro int this piece. The cut makes me think I belong in Pleasantville. Once again the cut is great. It has capped sleeves which are new and I have rather large arms so the fit is just ever so slightly tight there but not enough for me to uncomfortable and not enjoy wearing the crap out of this. I also like that it's lined so it has a slightly heavier weight to it unlike my last mustard dress. Once again eShakti has won me over!

Spring '13 eShakti Review

This is my first review for eShakti and I am glad that I can post such a positive review for this shop. I know quite a few ladies who have been ordering from them for a while now, all of which have been very satisfied customers. I wasn't sure about sizing, again since I am a size 32, the higher the size goes the more difficult finding garments can be. But when they emailed me offering a free item from their site I figured there was no better time to test it all out.

I choose this fun metallic button a-line dress in mustard yellow. I am obsessed with yellow for spring. When I have black hair yellow wasn't the best fitting color option for me but now with my pink/red hair yellow seems to be my best fashion friend.

I thought about giving my personal measurements for the most perfectly fit dress I could possibly get but in the end went for their standard size 6x. I do love how you can customize your skirt length and sleeves on your top or dress too. Next time I might try the below the knee length for my skirt.

When my dress arrived and I pulled it out of the package I noticed the fabric was a non stretch cotton. Something I never wear for lack of give and movement. I am a fan and almost a slave to stretchy and comfortable clothes. But when I tried this dress on it was heaven sent. I felt like I might as well have given them my measurements because the dress fit me absolutely perfectly! My first thought was do I have any tea parties or spring events to attend because this is what I will be wearing!

I wish I had known about this site when I got married back in 2010 because all of my bridesmaids were plus size and in a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. This site would have been a godsend for that. But for anyone on the look out for bridal party dresses check out their new Bridesmaids line!

Leather & Spikes and Everything Nice

Ok maybe more like faux leather. But this dress was a project I had been putting together for a while and I finally had an occasion that would let me show it off. Leather skater skirts are all the rage right now which I love but I figured why stop at a skirt? This was my first bodice attempt I have ever made and it's still taking some getting used to as far as making and measuring but i think it turned out pretty good for my frist try! Once all the sewing was done and it was put together it looked great but it was lacking in just that little extra that accessories weren't going to fix on their own. Boom! Spikes. The dress was done. So off with my friends to Sugar Town I went where I felt so sexy and proud.

Fat Photo Shoot

Saturday was a fabulous day! I got my little Chubby Cartwheels family together and had a fantastic photo shoot. I had 2 new models this time around. Becka and Chris. Dream come true models. Fun, energetic, and fabulous to work with. Plus I had my previous mode Leigh who kills it every time we shoot. My best friend Chrystal was the shoot assistant and the stylist who I could not have done it with out. And last but never at all least was my good friend Nicole who was out photographer. This was her first photo shoot and honestly I was blown away with how well she did. I love my team and can't wait to post the photos live plus posting some fabulous new items coming to Chubby Cartwheels! Here are some sneak peak pics from the shoot.

The nice thing about finishing a shoot early is that I was able to take a few personal photos for my blog. Yay! I recently put my Big Body Hottie graphic that I have on my buttons and put it on a white t-shirt. I'm considering selling them in the shop so we will see how that works. Also getting to show off an upcoming addition to my shop. The black velvet skater skirt. It's incredibly soft and I can't wait to pair it with millions of bodysuits. I really liked this outfit because it's a simple black and white look that makes my hair pop! It's doing this weird light pink on top and red/pink at the bottom, which honestly isn't that bad even though it's the result of a hair accident. Plus adding this Forever 21 Spiked Pork Pie hat gave it that little extra needed. I saw Tracy Broxterman of Domino Dollhouse in her recent blog update wearing a back Patricia Fields hat and I fell in love so when I came across this one, I was inspired to get it for the Chubby Cartwheels photo shoot but ended up using it myself.

My Vintage Victory

My best friend took me to Fat Fancy for my birthday present. I am on the larger end of the sizing spectrum so I don't always have the best of luck finding clothing most anywhere in stores. But apparently the vintage gods were shinning on me that day. Carlee one of the shop owners took me to a rack with some new dresses they just got in and I nearly died over this dress. I kept saying to myself on the way to the dressing room this isn't going to fit. They never fit. Not to mention the fabric is non stretch which is just unheard of for me. But magic happened that day in Fat Fancy. Not just the magic that happens there everyday, but super size magic. The dress fit! And I look rather fabulous in it. So to any of you ladies who feel like vintage shopping it out for you because the search is hard, never give up hope. There are always amazing items to be found and rebirthed into the fat fashion scene.

January Clothing Swap!

I love this amazing fat fashion community we have formed in Portland. With more people joining for every event I'm only wishing we had started it sooner. Today's even was hosted by Nicole in her lovely home. We had by far the biggest turn out. SO MUCH CLOTHING! I walked away with a wicked cute polk dot nighty, hoodie, grey/blue tank, black cardigan and so much more!
Everyone helped to stock the kitchen full of amazing goodies to eat plus about 10 or more bottles of champagne. Can't wait till our next event. :)

Planchettes Please!

Domino Dollhouse Galaxy Collection! You have all heard about it, seen it, drooled over it and bought it as have I. One piece in particular being the Full skirt in planchettes. Now I don't own many white items because I am a clumsy person. But when I saw this skirt come out I just had to have it. With a stretchy black waistband this extremely comfortable knit skirt is perfection. I'm on the larger side you guys and this skirt fits me well along with her over the knee leggings but thats another post. Domino Dollhouse is great with their fit.

I realize I have a lot of black and white going on in this outfit, I know. Luckily my hair is glowing pink and and I added a necklace with dash of teal in to combate that. Not much more was needed. This is something I plan on going to tea in. Thats right. I go and have tea with friends. It's lovely! But this skirt can also be paired with a different top and heels for a night out and these days it's great to have versatile clothes.

Plus Model Magazine!

Just in case I haven't posted about it enough I had 5 pieces (velvet leggings, velvet bodysuit, bandeau top, mesh bodysuit and velvet skirt) from my shop Chubby Cartwheels worn by the beautiful Clementine in the January 2013 issue of Plus Model Magazine! The gorgeous and talented Reah Norman styled the shoot that also featured Cult of California, Domino Dollhouse (these being some personal favorites of mine) and other fabulous brands. I was beyond thrilled that Reah asked me for pieces from my shop and couldn't be happier with the way the shoot turned out.

That's a Wrap!

2012 was a fantastic year for me. My first full year with my shop Chubby Cartwheels, I visited LA twice, made new friends, had my first fashion show and the list goes on. I was going to put together a Best Of 2012 photo collage and I realized one thing. I wore nothing but skirts and dresses and while I won't stop wearing them I need and want to incorporate pants, jackets and different shoes into my wardrobe. I also would like to do more product reviews. I feel like being the size I am I can show other women around my size there are many options out there for us.

In 2013 I hope to have more photo shoots for my shop as well as my blog, do more videos, have another fashion show, travel again, buy a new car (my car's nickname is The Hate Tank) and further my career in fashion and maybe even try a new hair color!

The Mighty Mesh Bodysuit!

An exciting new piece has joined the Chubby Cartwheels collection! The Mesh Bodysuit! It comes in 6 different colors and sizes 1x-5x! I was so excited to put this piece together. Bodysuits were a big thing for me this year. My Lace Bodysuits are the top selling item on my site and I wanted a way to create more opportunity to wear these versatile pieces so I found other fabrics to work with.

Honestly I hadn't even thought about sheer stretchy mesh until my good friend Courtney of The Glitter Thread said she was interested in my lace bodysuit but didn't want what everyone else would already have. I have of course made myself a bodysuit. The best part about making your own clothes for a shop is you get to test out all the products before anyone else. So I made myself one in a beautiful mint green. I have managed to pair it with 2 different looks so far when going out. One for the Gossip show I attended in October and one for the first PDX Fatshion meetup this past summer! On both occasions I paired them with high waisted skirts and flats. I felt so sexy and amazingly comfortable considering I was wearing a sheer top. Something I know years ago I probably would not have dared to do but I am so glad I am at a place now where I can!

The bodysuits can be customized to fit different bodies. For instance if you are wider in the hips and smaller in the chest, if you have a longer torso or are big in the bust, I can customize your pattern to fit you and your body. Having experienced it all my life I never want someone to feel like their size is limiting their style.

Gold Lion

This outfit post was inspired by a well known song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs called Gold Lion for the SKORCH Magazine November issue. When I've been listen to it lately I envision a fierce and sexy fashion show. Women strutting down the catwalk in gorgeous golds and blacks. So for my outfit I decided to pair a favorite top from OneStopPlus and DIY myself a statement piece, a gold skater skirt. My top originally had silver buttons so to make sure I didn't clash metals I bought new gold buttons and quickly replaced them giving new life to this older shirt. Adding some fabulous accessories to bring together my major obsession with gold I rocked my gold spike ASOS headband, purple with gold accent Forever21 flats and my thrifted clutch.

A whole lot of Gossip

October was a fabulous month for me. My shop is doing very well and hitting it's one year anniversary, I've been hanging out with some new friends who are absolutely amazing and I got to celebrate my 3 year friendship anniversary with my friend Crystal. We met 3 years ago in October 2009 at a Gossip concert here in Portland. She was up here visiting from San Fran and my friend Tim brought her to the show and ever since we have been great friends. You can then imagine our extreme happiness that for the first time since then the Gossip came back to their old stomping grounds, Portland Oregon, for a show and it was in October. We promptly bought tickets along with many of our other friends.

Crystal and I met up with some friends in Ringlers below the Crystal Ballroom before the show for some drinks and tots. Apparently if you are in there before a show and you buy drinks or food they let you into the show 10 minutes earlier than the chumps outside in the line.

Once upstairs I walked straight to the stage to claim my spot. I was not about to hang out in the beer garden till the music started. I wanted to be as close to Beth as I could. The show, to say the least, was absolutely amazing. Bonnie Montgonery, Magic Mouth and the Gossip were insane. Crystal threw her Spanx at Beth Ditto and Melody threw her bra. Beth ended up talking to them from the stage about how she knows how much these items cost and so the girls should keep them. The I screamed that I loved her dress and she told me her friend made it for her. We actually talked to Beth Ditto on state at a show. The night literally couldn't have gone any better. Well if I had gotten up the balls to give her my business card, that would have been better. But still, an amazing night was had by all!

My Dollhouse & Dots

The minute I made my crop black denim vest from Domino Dollhouse mine I couldn't wait to do an OOTD post including it. It's hip, fashionable and will literally go with most anything I own. For this outfit I paired the vest with a mint green velvet bandeau top, a black high waisted pencil skirt and two-tone black and white polka dot leggings. This outfit is probably not something I would wear to Safeway to pick up the groceries but more of a night out with my girlfriends and each of these pieces can be paired with most anything else to create completely different looks. Also I have to give my VBL(visible belly line) a shout out. It sometimes take a long time to get used to letting something show that we are constantly told we need to hide, smooth out and be ashamed of. That is not me and I hope more of you will feel confident in showing yours off as well. We are beautiful and should never let anyone tell us otherwise!

Miss Plus Oregon!

I attended the Oregon Plus America Interest Pageant. An Interest Pageant is where new and experiences woman can see what it's like in a pageant setting while gaining experience and confidence to possibly compete in the state pageant in Feb 2013. There were 11 contestants and they all were judged on their interview skills, outfits, confidence and general presentation. A major perk of being there was I finally got to meet and chat with Jessica Kane of SKORCH Magazine. It was a lovely afternoon event and I can't wait to go to the state pageant in February.

DIY Halloween

Seeing that I have long bright red hair and I hate wearing wigs, my halloween costume options were a bit on the limited side. The main characters I could think of were Jessica Rabbit, Poison Ivy, Pippy Longstocking and Ariel from the Little Mermaid. To be honest the main deciding factor was when I was at Joanns and I came across this amazing metallic green stretch fish scale fabric. It was honestly meant to be. I wasn't sure if what I was going to be able to make. Do I make a skirt and just say I'm Ariel or do I go Cher from Mermaids and create a tail-like bottom piece? After talking with my friend Crystal and she was bouncing ideas around about her costume she suggested we be hipster Disney Princesses. They are all over Tumblr, we both wear "hipster" type glasses anyway so why not wear something comfortable and have it be our costume as well. So we convinced several other friends to go along and in all we had Ariel, Snow White, Cinderella and Bell.

I made a video update for this one. Some things I need to work on for videos: 1. Stop saying UMM 2. Look at the camera 3. Make sure I have better lighting. But yeah check it out! :)

Love Velvet Love Bows

I find it rare to buy sweaters/cardigans these days. Even with the temperatures dropping I am more of a hoodie gal. But on an impromptu early morning trip to the mall with some friends I found myself in Torrid drooling over their sweater sale table. I know this white cardigan with black bow detail and rhinestone button cardigan has been out for a while but it just felt like the right time for me. It was sweet, cute and nothing at all like I had in my wardrobe which to me means I needed it. So I grabbed the only 4x left on the table. I said that's it, this is the only purchase I will be making. Until what my friend Crystal showed me next. This sweater has the body of a black sweatshirt but the long arms are made from a stretchy black lace. On the hanger I was a tad underwhelmed but as soon as I tried it on I was in love! It was really flattering and super comfortable. Both items were on sale which really sealed the deal for me. I went home a happy camper that day.

When I finally found an outfit to pair the white cardigan with I was thrilled. Working two jobs from home doesn't have me out buying clothing that is more on the dress up side. I feel like I could wear this outfit out to dinner, a party, a night out at Sugar Town or anything really. Plus most of this outfit is either gifted, thrifted or DIY so it was all very affordable which makes me love it even more!

Curvy Chic Closet

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Curvy Chic Closet again! The had moved to a new and in my opinion way better location. I made sure to plan it out so I was there opening day for the sale so I wouldn't miss out on any great deals. So I dragged my good friend Danielle with me for a fun ladies day out. She managed to snag 3 dress for less than $20 dollars and I got away with a fantastic sweater/cardigan and clutch. It was a victory for us both. I'm still crying over that leopard print jacket. One day... one day.

There were a few differences that stood out to me this time around at Curvy Chic Closet. There was quite the variety of venders this time. I saw people getting henna tattoos, manicures and there was even a chair massage station! $1 dollar a minute. Needless to say it didn't take me long to say "ME NEXT" and hop on the chair. After my wonderful 5 minute massage (I was beyond relaxed) I headed to the register to pay for my goodies and head home.

This is such a great project put on by Becky Jarvis and I hope it continues. I'm even considering consigning some of my old clothes there next time. Best way to clear our the closet and make some extra cash that will just go straight into more clothes. The circle of life.

Fat Fashion Day- Portland Picture Heavy

Finally a great day occurred in Portland Oregon. Two wonderful ladies put together a fat positive fashion day full of shopping, food and fashion. We started the day out at co-organizer Coco's beautiful home for a meet and greet/brunch/clothing swap which was a raging success. How can a day not start off amazing when you cleanse your closet and get free goodies while drinking champagne and eating bacon? The answer is it can't. That's just going to be a great day.

Our first destination was Fat Fancy! The fantastic downtown fat fashion shop with retro styles, independent designers and one of a kind looks. Shop owner Annie was there to greet us as we came in and took over. I was so excited to find a perfect pair of royal blue flats to go with my outfit I was planning to wear to LA the following weekend for the Domino Dollhouse Pop Up Shop! Score! Those plus some great new sunglasses.

One to our next shop Savvy Plus! Another great secondhand/consignment shop located on Hawthorne. This shop caters to more modern clothing and style with a fantastic selection of jewelry up at the counter. I was drooling over far too many items in that store and encouraging my friends to buy everything they tried on.

Our final destination for the day was visiting Bertha at her shop Size Queen! A wonderful shop with all of her own fun and unique fashion. She does custom sizing jobs and makes the most fabulous hologram hot pants you will ever see in you life! She greeted us with champagne, discount coupons and sweets. So clearly this was the best way to end a great day! I ended up buying a yellow faux snake skin belt. I FINALLY have a yellow belt so I can die happy now.

All in all we had an amazing time out today. I made many friends and absolutely cannot wait for the next event! I have a feeling it will be even bigger and better.

Down at the Dollhouse

As a lot of you may know if you follow me on tumblr, twitter or facebook, I was fortunate enough to travel to LA this past weekend for the first ever Domino Dollhouse Pop Up Shop! Tickets to fly were so cheap it only made sense to go. I wanted to make sure I looked fabulous for the event as I knew it would be a great time to meet other bloggers and network. What I didn't even think about was the LA weather. Portland spoils me in this regard. I assumed that since it was almost October I would be safe wearing 3/4 length sleeve royal blue VELVET bodysuit. Boy was I ever wrong. HOT HOT HOT! But I didn't let that stop or even ruin the day. Sweaty and red faced I still mingled and met so many amazing women! Tracy, owner of Domino Dollhouse, had the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence there collecting for a charity raffle drawing, Natalie from Ninja Betty and the Nunchix DJing, a fantastic and free photo booth, cupcakes, boozy punch, Vanessa Leigh of SweetLeigh, bloggers galore and so much more! I managed to pick up a Classic Jean Vest in Black Demin as a vest in blue and white pinstripes! Here are the pictures from the glorious event and all the fabulous fat fashion that happened.
