Gharbat Gula was photographed when she was 12 by photographer Steve McCurry, in June 1984, in the refugee camp of Nasir Bagh in Pakistan during the insurrection against the Soviet invasion. Her portrait was featured on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985 because of her expressive face with green eyes. However, at that time, nobody knew the name of the girl.

The photographer spent 17 years searching for the girl. He took many trips to the region until, in January 2002, he found her. She was a 30 year old married woman with three children. Finally he discovered her name. Gharbat Gula returned to Afghanistan in 1992 where she lives in a remote village.

Nobody had ever taken a photo of her before McCurry and she did not know that her face had become famous. The woman's identity was confirmed at 99.9% through facial recognition technology used by the FBI and especially by the comparison of the two photographed irises.

vMount Santubong (Malay: Gunung Santubong) is a mountain in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It is located about 35 km north of the state capital Kuching.

On a clear day, it can be seen from Kuching. The mountain and its surrounding area is a popular tourist attraction.

According to the Encyclopaedia of Iban Studies the original inhabitants of Santubong were the Iban. Si-antu-ubong means 'spirit boat' in the Iban language. Antu is hantu in Malay which means spirit or ghost. Santubong are boat like coffins made from a single hollow log designed to represent the vesell in which a dead person will travel from this world to afterlife. Following another theory, the name Santubong is derived from "san choo bong" in the Hakka Chinese dialect, meaning "wild pig king" or "king of wild pig

Set under the spectacularly steep 810 peak of Gunung Santubong, the Santubong Peninsula is home to Sarawak's finest beach resorts and its famous Cultural Village.

There are a number of local legends about Gunung Santubong. One of these tells of how the mountain came to be and where its name came from. Like many legends, there are several versions of this one. According to one version, the mountain was formed when mythical Princess Santubong was speared by her jealous sister, Princess Sejinjang. Falling over, she gave the mountain its distinctive profile, like a pregnant belly.

According to the other version of this story, the two princesses lived in the heavenly kingdom Kayangan. The Crown Prince fell in love with both of them, but they refused to be joint wives. The King of Kayangan banished the princesses to earth, where they became Gunung Santubong and the nearby Gunung Seijinjang.

Popular among trekkers and climbers, the route involves some steep climbs, including up rope ladders, but the trail is well made, and it provides very rewarding views from the top.

The trail passes through beautiful and diverse rainforest and offers a good opportunity for seeing wildlife, especially on weekdays when the trail is quieter. A pretty waterfall offers a great way to cool off at the end of the walk.

Not to left out that some visitor hike up in the dark to catch the sunrise moments, and some in the late afternoon for sunset. if you're lucky enough, you should see the yolk rising up the sky softly.

Are You Strong Enough for STONG Challenge ?

Gunung Stong, also known as Gunung Setong, Dabong in the district of Gua Musang, Kelantan stands at 1,433 metres high. For those who managed to scale this mountain the climb was tough and challenging and definitely an experience worth remembering. Myself had the chance to share this challenging experience after being invited to the Stong Challenge 2011 Expedition organized by department of Occupational Safety and health DOSH Pahang. The expedition, held over three days, drew 100 ++ participants from the DOSH Malaysia. It was staged to enhance relations between DOSH staff via recreational activities and appreciation of the nature.

Expedition Begins

The participants began the expedition from Stesen Sentral in Jerantut at 0200 am and travelled to Dabong, located some 155 km south of Kota Baharu. The journey lasted 5 hours. After reaching Stesen Dabong, the participants were taken to Stong Hill Resort 15 minutes away. The resort, located at the foot of Gunung Stong, is a recreational facility that offers chalets to lodgers. The participants were later given a briefing before being led by guides up the mountain. They also performed light exercises before scaling the mountain.

The two-hour climb to Kem Baha began at exactly 10am. During the climb to Kem Baha, the participants were treated to some 'breathtaking' views of the panorama that included various flora and fauna, as well as limestone rocks of millions of years old.

This state park has been listed among the five best ecosystem destinations in Malaysia. Among the most scenic attraction is the seven-tier 303m-high Jelawang Waterfall. At this waterfall, the participants wasted no time 'breathing' the cool and fresh air apart from taking photographs of the beautiful scenery there. After braving the steep and slippery slopes as well as scaling dangerous boulders, the climbers reached Kem Baha at noon.

Reaching the Peak

After pitching the tents and having lunch, the participants were making preparations to proceed to the mountain's summit that will take them some four hours of climbing. The climb over this stretch proved to be more difficult than the earlier stage. Some of the climbers suffered from cramps. They also had to negotiate narrow paths and suffered from cuts as well as bruises.

Some who could not proceed with the climb had to give up and return to Kem Baha. After two hours climbing up the mountain from Kem Baha, the remnants of the party were treated to the exotic scenery on the mountain slopes. During the climb, the jungle birds and other animals were heard as 'mocking' the tired participants.

For the nature lovers, the climb up Gunung Stong proved to be a piece of memorable experience as the state park is not only an eco-tourism paradise but also functions as a conservation zone for various flora and fauna. The state park is actually home to some endangered species including such as the Asiatic elephant, Malayan tiger, seladang, Argus peacock and tapir.

The climbers reached the mountain peak after a tough and rough journey of four hours. Despite being overly exhausted, satisfaction was clearly written over the faces of all these climbers.From on top of Gunung Stong, the participants were able to witness the enchanting scenery that envelops the state park. They were also able to observe the mist-clad peaks of Gunung Ayam and Gunung Baha. It was cool up there with temperatures ranging from 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. Indeed scaling Gunung Stong is a therapy for the tired mind of city dwellers.

Omayra Sanchez was a little girl who died during the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which destroyed the town of Armero, Colombia, in 1985. Omayra was stuck for three days in the mud, water, corpses of relatives and debris from her home. She was 13 years old.

Rescuers found that it was impossible to save her as they would have had to amputate her legs. The other option was to use a pump-turbine to suck the sticky mud. The only pump available was too far away and unavailable.

Omayra was strong till the last moment of her life. According to aid workers and journalists who were with her for three days, she was thinking about returning to school and passing exams. Thanks to photographer Frank Fournier, the image of Omayra travelled the world exposing the indifference of the Colombian government to ordinary, destitute Columbians (which has not changed much today).

The photograph was published several months after the young girl died. Many view this picture of 1985 as the beginning of what we now call the globalization of agony.

It shows the cold-blooded assassination of a Vietcong guerrilla on February 1, 1968, by the police chief of Saigon. The Vietcong hands were tied behind his back when he was shot at close range.

Adams, who had been a correspondent for 13 wars, won a Pulitzer Prize for this picture. He was so emotionally affected by the event that he changed his profession.
