Google Voice invites catching up to demand

I first sent in my request for an invite a few months ago and was starting to think I wouldn’t get my invite till the end of the year, but I just got it today! Haven’t played with it that much, but got my new number, voicemail, and phones setup which took all of 10 mins to do. It even lets you call into your Google Voice number to initiate an outbound call and shows your GV number on the caller ID of the person you are calling. So if you are waiting for your invite, it looks like you wait might soon be over.

at&t’s MMS and tethering coming in September?

Appmodo is reporting that they have confirmed with at&t that MMS and tethering are going live in September:

Well those stories are true as MMS and tethering are now coming in September. The controversy over tethering pricing remains the same. Tethering for iPhone will cost $55 on top of the current iPhone data plans.

I have no idea of Appmodo’s track record, but it seems logical enough. It fits in with late summer (September 7th, 2009 unofficial end of summer in the US) date at&t has publicly stated and also may fit nicely with a 3.1 iPhone / iPod touch firmware release. If the $55 rumored tethering price turns out to be true then at&t is OUT OF THEIR MIND. For that price you might as well just get a laptop connect card!

More evidence to support the iPod camera rumor

There have been rumors of a camera finding it’s way into the iPod touch and even the nano. It makes perfect sense to me to see a camera added to the iPod touch since it’s so similar to the iPhone (software and hardware), but not so much for the nano. Well here is some more evidence to support a camera coming to at least one of the iPods…check out this job listing on Apple’s website for an “iPod/iPhone – Camera Validation Engineer”:

Would the real iPhone killer please stand up?

The biggest hyped “iPhone killers”, BlackBerry Storm and Palm Pre, failed to deliver on that threat. The Pre isn’t an iPhone killer just yet, but at least it’s a decent device. There’s been some recent news about it’s less than superb hardware, but even with that negative press it still seems everyone is really loving the new webOS…so don’t count Palm out just yet. The Storm on the other hand was a complete disaster from just about everyone point of view except the truly dedicated fans and people that wanted an iPhone but hate Apple.

Next up is the number one mobile phone manufacture in the world, Nokia, with the new N97. In a Gizmodo review of the device they seemed to really like the feel of the hardware, but really dumped on the Symbian OS:

I don’t even know where to start the hate parade I want to unleash on S60 5th edition. Nokia’s managed to make RIM’s BlackBerry Storm OS retrofit look like a work of art.

And in summary:

If this really is the best Nokia can do, the giant is doomed to die a slow death, propped up for a while by the cheap handsets that it sells by the tens of millions.

So it seems there really isn’t anyone out there to light a fire under Apple, which is sad becuase it means we will have to wait longer for background apps, better notification system, etc. etc.

new iPhone clones look very much like the real thing

The iPhone 3GS has been out for a little over 1 week and there are already new clones coming out of China… Unlike the previous generation of clones, such as the HiPhone, these new ones look very much like the real thing…

iPhone 3.1 beta adds save a copy for 3GS trimmed video

Not being able to save a copy of your original video when creating a trimmed version was one of the complaints I’ve heard over and over from many people since the 3GS release. Glad to see Apple responding to this one!

MMS option reappears on iPhone 3.1 beta

Apple just released iPhone 3.1 beta and it came along with a carrier update to AT&T 4.2. So itt seems Apple is preparing for a 3.1 release after at&t is “ready” to provide MMS service to iPhones. I guess Apple could always change the carrier file for the final 3.1 US release, but they removed the MMS option way back in 3.0 beta 5 and hasn’t been seen since so this seems somewhat significant to me.

…and as expected it still doesn’t work.
