If you know me or at least have been stalking me on Facebook / Twitter / Tumblr / Instagram, you'd know that I am in fact, a self-confessed, certified ~~Cumberbabe~~ Cumberbitch. So even if I wasn't much of Trekkie, knowing that my dear Benny will be there was enough of a reason for me to watch Star Trek Into Darkness. And this is the first time ever that I am rooting for the bad guy because c'mon how could you not?

So if I was actually live tweeting every single appearance of Benny in Star Trek it would look like this:

18th Hot Air Balloon Festival

Remember when I told you guys that this year I promised to travel more and be a bit more "adventurous"? Well, here is me trying to achieve that by going to the 18th Hot Air Balloon Festival in Clark, Pampanga.

Honestly I've wanted to go here for the longest time so I told myself that this is the year that I will get to experience this.

I went with Gelo's family and our friend, David. We left Manila around 4:00 am and arrived at the OMNI Aviation field around 6:00 am. The parking was such a headache (probably because we arrived a little late. Hehe). Then we had to walk from the parking area to the main field itself for about 20 minutes.

We only waited for the Breitling Jet Team's exhibition then went back to Manila (because it was so frickin' hot!)

Oh, and Marley came along as well! :)

CBS Elementary

I started to watch the CBS version ofShelock Holmes a.k.a. Elementary simply because I was curious. Being the faithful BBC Sherlock fan that I am, I wondered how the Americans would ~~butcher~~ interpret this classic. When the news of the another modernized take on this classic favorite shook the intrawebs, my own initial reaction was, "What kind of debauchery is this?" I had a feeling that they won't be able to pull it off well (because they didn't have Mark Gatniss and Steven Moffat). Several weeks after that, they've released the casting details and lo and behold. Watson is a she, played by my least favorite Charlie's Angel, Lucy Liu.

I ignored the tweets and blog reviews about this show until that one fateful night when our internet seems to be acting faster that its usual rate, I downloaded the first 8 episodes of Elementary. I was prepared to see the worst (I did not even know this Jonny Lee Miller guy) and I was equipped with every ill insult a fan could possibly think of.

Sherlock as chest hair and tattoos.

But I didn't sleep that night.

I think the key to watching Elementary is to treat it less like a Sherlock Holmes text but rather, more of a CSI kind of show. To be honest, the only elements that the show "borrowed" from the canon is the fact that Sherlock Holmes is a consulting detective that has an incomparable mastery of the science of deduction and that Dr. Watson is a medical professional. That's it. No Lestrade. No Mycroft. NO MRS.HUDSON! There is an Irene Adler but she's dead. Moran showed up but he wasn't what I expected and Moriarty is still out there.

The chemistry between Miller and Liu is a slowly building up. It was virtually non-existent during the first 3 episodes but the producers made CBS Sherlock a more charming, more reasonable, less crazy one. I predict the the impending romance between the two will come around season 4 or 5. And according to THIS TWEET OF MINE, I seem to be starting to like the dynamics of the show.

Wanna bet?

Do I approve of the dynamics? Yes. The romance? Not really. It complicates things and distracts us from The Game. Please, leave the romance to Castle. Elementary seems to be the answer to the homophobic Americans (the same way they made Jude Law's Watson have a wife). Two males simply cannot live alone in an apartment and not be gay. I am, in a way, thankful for this. They at least respected the sanctity of the Sherlock-Watson bromance.

I'm not saying that it's such an unwatchable show. As I've mentioned earlier. It does have the elements of the crime scene/investigative type of show that I've loved in CSI/NCIS/Criminal Minds. The cases (again not similar to the canon) are interesting as well (Russian spies, hiring your own assassin, etc.). Aidan Quinn is a genius of a choice as Capt. Thomas Gregson.

Will I stop watching? Surprisingly no. It provides me the entertainment and the cases are interesting. But again, I have to warn you. If you want to watch Elementary, you should stop treating it as a Sherlock adaptation. Because it might as well be the reason for you to stop watching it.

See the sea

I have to admit. I am a late bloomer when it comes to appreciating the great outdoors. I'm more of a home buddy / let's just watch DVDs or an entire season of Friends type of person. If I do go out it would be with my friends to a mall or out drinking. Rarely do I plan any out of town trips with them (if ever hanggang Tagaytay lang, then we veg out when we get there).

But I want this to change.

I want to see more of the world (not just the sea)! I envy those who have the courage to just pick up their stuff, ride the first bus they see, and go anywhere their feet take them. But alas, I can't do that because I have a job that I have to attend to and a budget that I have to watch. Haha. But otherwise, I am looking forward to more adventures to start this year!

Hello 2013!

Hello everyone! It's exactly 1:53am and I can't sleep. I've been jumping from one blog to another (admit it, you do that too) and I realized, hey I've been a really bad blogger because I haven't updated this blog for the longest time! I guess it was my job as well as my "offline" life that's been getting in the way and I know that it's no excuse so starting now, I promise that I will turn things around and blog more!

To tell you honestly, I've missed writing so much and I went to an involuntary leave because I needed to find my "voice" (naks) but I don't know, right now I feel so excited about this year and what it holds for me. I guess the key to everything is indeed positivity!

I usually don't do resolutions (I just do. Period.) but I guess here's what I really want my whole outlook to be this 2013.

It will get better. Wait scrap that. I does get better. And with that, I leave you with one my anthem (from my current favorite band, Fun.)

Conquering Corregidor

Despite the scorching heat, I very much enjoyed our day trip to Corregidor. I went with Gelo and his family and even if I only had 2 hours of sleep prior to this trip (blame Monopoly Deal for this); I was alive, alert, and awake all throughout our tour (I was super exhausted though when I got home. Haha).

We went to the Sun Cruise dock near PICC around 7:30am, departed from Manila around 8am and arrived at Corregidor around 9am. Toured the island via tramway. Our tour ended around 2:30pm and we were back in Manila by 4:30pm. It was a quick but educational trip.

Sharing to you all a few snapshots from our trip.

Located between Bataan and Cavite, Corregidor is just a few miles off the shore of Manila. It served an important role in safeguarding the entrance to capital since most ships had to pass by here. It became a silent witness to the Spanish, American, and Japanese colonization. As a military base, you can see remnants of the war here at this tadpole-shaped island.

We also had the option to try the Malinta Tunnel experience. Honestly, when I stepped inside the tunnel, I felt really anxious and uneasy because of its history -- it was a hospital, headquarters to Pres. Quezon, and Gen. MacArthur, and later on a death chamber to thousands of Japanese soldiers who were trapped inside (some of the blown/burned while some committed suicide inside). Oh, if these walls could talk.

If you want to experience this Corregidor tour, I suggest that you contact Sun Cruises for their rates and schedules. I highly recommend that you visit this at least once in your life. It's a really insightful tour, you get to see how important this place is and you get to appreciate our history as well.

Foster the People in Manila

A few weeks ago, when I heard the news that Foster the People was going to have a concert here in Manila, I was so psyched and I promised myself that I really, really, really need to watch this concert. Imagine my happiness when Gelo surprised me with this 4 days before the concert:

You see, Foster the People is my go-to good vibes music. If my life were a movie, I'd like Foster the People to dominate my soundtrack. It was so uncanny for me to finally be able to watch them live.

Gelo and I actually came from the MOA Arena to watch Game 1 then immediately rushed to Araneta after. Fortunately, we got there earlier than expected so we had dinner first then went inside around 8:30 to hear Techy Romantics playing as the opening act (good choice by the way).

Concert started past 9pm and the rest, as they say, is music history.

Ran into Kiefer after the concert! Gave him my good luck for Thursday's Game 2 :)

This is probably one of the craziest concerts I've been to. My seatmate (who was a complete stranger) was dancing wildly, everyone was singing with the band, Mark threw his guitar, and I was all choked up and sweaty because of all the screaming and dancing. THE PUMPED UP KICKS encore was the bomb! There were no words to describe how unbelievably awesome it was! Plus, Mark said the we Filipinos have a perfect pitch. Oha oha. :)

Luneta

Well, not really the one in Manila. Ateneo had their own little version between the Dela Costa and the Social Sciences Building.

Dubbed as Luneta, the Dela Costa Gardens is a meeting/studying/HOHOL place.

I don't know why it took me 5 years to write about this place. I guess passing by here last night made me feel a little nostalgic about my college days. You see, this was where I used to hangout. ALL.THE.TIME.Those benches by the side of the building, that's where you'll usually find me when a) I don't have classes or b) I'm not in the library (yes, I like to hang out in the library).

It's a conducive place to study actually, especially if the subject at hand is Philo/Theo/English/Fil/FLC. I remember one instance when I was studying for the my Ph104 orals and I just sat there listening to other people practicing their "lines" and tried to absorb whatever it was that they were saying. I didn't really apply them in the end but it was nice to know that I wasn't a lonely soul whose grade was thinly hanging by explaining Cultural Relativism or by narrating the Allegory of the Cave.

Of course, this particular spot wasn't just ideal for learning. I've come to appreciate this place because it was my refuge. The one place I can go to knowing that when I go there, there will always be someone that I know and that I can rant/rave to. I guess now that's kind of hard to come by. Everyone's busy with their own thing and finding a common time -- even finding a common time to find a common time becomes a difficult task.

You know the myth(?) of the "Bench Culture" in Ateneo. Well, I guess it's partly true. But I'd like to believe that the reason behind that is not just territorial. To me, I think it's more of sentimental. People go to places where they feel that they're a community. They go there not only because it serves a purpose but because they like to give it meaning.

Now that I think about it. This post is kind of appropriate with the ACET coming up this weekend. I guess what I'm really trying to say is. I miss college. I miss the comfort that Ateneo has given me. But most importantly, I'm thankful. Because this Luneta, my Luneta became so much more than a meeting/study/HOHOL place to me. And to associate a place with such a blissful memory - well, that's something I know I'll always, always have and something that's really worth thanking for.

Dreaming of Cebu

Last summer Gelo and I went to Cebu to get some R&R. We stayed at Costabella Resort in Mactan, did touristy stuff, and ate A LOT!

I have to admit, if I were to live anywhere else in the Philippines, I would probably choose Cebu without any hesitation. It's an urban city but it's less crowded than Manila. Plus, the people there are genuinely nice! :) I'm really looking forward to going back (maybe this time we'll stay in Cebu City).

In the meantime, I'll simply look at these photos to remind me of the home I found in Cebu.

Yabu at Robinsons Magnolia

Finally, after the long wait, Yabu opens their second branch at the newly-opened Robinson's Magnolia.

You can imagine my excitement when I got a message in my Facebook inbox telling me I'm one of the selected few invited to their food-tasting-slash-stress-testing event. I've been craving for Yabu for so long (Gelo can attest to this) ever since I stopped working in Ortigas. Good thing Yabu in Robinson's Magnolia is somewhat nearer from our house than the one in Megamall. :)

The interiors are very similar to that of the Megamall branch. The comic book-like walls, the wooden chairs and tables. Plus, the Japanese condiments. :)

Too bad though that they didn't have the Seafood Set (which is what I usually order) but I guess it was a sign that I need to order something else.

But first, the appetizers --

Wakame (seaweed and ebiko) and Superior Potato and Egg Salad - the flavors are very simple but delicious. Of course, being the potato-loving girl that I am, the Superior Potato and Egg Salad was a sure hit for me. The Wakame caught me by surprise because I usually don't like seaweed but I managed to finish this bowl. :)

To all you frequent Yabu eaters out there, you know that your foodie experience wouldn't be complete without this -- the Yabu Ritual. Partly-therapeutic, partly-gastronomic. Grinding these sesame seeds brings out their aroma and flavor. Paired with Yabu's signature Katsu sauce, your food will make sweet, sweet love in your mouth after you dip it in.

We were also given out evaluation sheets to be filled out after we've taken our meals. We'll be grading the service (was the food one time, were the waiters nice and accommodating) and the food (was the food served warm, was the flavor consistent). Gelo even recognized our server, Jonel, who was from the Megamall branch.

Now for the main course!

I got the Chicken Katsudon Set (120g). It did not disappoint. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

The Chicken Katsudon Set comes with your serving of crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside chicken, unlimited rice and cabbage, miso soup, and fruits.

I mean, seriously, who can resist this perfectly golden goodness?

Gelo had the Hire Katsudon Set (100g) which he also enjoyed very much.

Hire is actually pork tenderloin. Meaning the fat from the pork has been trimmed leaving you with a lean piece of meat.

Seeing these photos again makes me want to go back really soon! I'm so glad that they now have two branches. More katsu for everyone! :)

Interior Motives with Angel Aquino

A few weeks ago I went to SumoSam Podium to see my Lifestyle Network family and also to attend the press conference for their newest show Interior Motives with Angel Aquino.

We all know that Angel Aquino isn't a newbie in being a lifestyle show host. From her beginnings in F with Cher and Daphne to Us Girls with Iya and Chesca - she takes on a different role by going solo for Interior Motives.

Speaking of, Iya, she was also there to support her co-host and friend :)

Of course, no presscon would be complete without yummy, yummy food from SumoSam! I especially liked the asparagus wrapped in bacon and the oysters as well :)

Despite the gloomy weather - there was an overwhelming number of press people (from TV, magazines, online) who came. That includes me! Hehehe :)

One of the questions that was asked was how Interior Motives differ compared to all the other interior design shows what we've seen. Lala explained that for every episode, they won't be showcasing an entire house, instead, they'll be focusing on one part of the house - for example, a bathroom episode. They feature the "know", "how", and "buy" aspects of interior design - not simply featuring spectacular houses.

Another thing is that the show promises to give excellent recommendations and extensive comparisons on furniture, ornaments, and pieces that are featured on the show (so you know exactly where and how to get what you like. Awesome!).

For Angel, she feels both anxious and excited -- since she doesn't have background on interior designing, she gets to ask questions "normal" people like us would commonly inquire. She adds that the viewers will also learn about the jargon of interior design making it more understandable.

Nolita at High Street Central

Hello folks! Yes, I am back! I'm still getting used to blogging again (I can't believe it's been 3 months since I last wrote something here) - so forgive me for this really quick post. As for my blogging hiatus, I will try really hard to post regularly, though I can't really promise anything!

Last Thursday, my officemates and I went to High Street Central to have lunch at Nolita. From the makers of Borough in Podium, Nolita is known for their pizza by slice and ultimate comfort food goodness. I'm not gonna say much, instead, I'll let the photos do the talking.

Verdict? I will definitely come back especially for the Stove Top Mac n Cheese :)

Heel Genius Amazing Foot Cream

If there's one part of my/our body that I/we thoroughly use and abuse everyday, it would be our feet. If you're like me who commutes to work everyday and who is always out and about, you probably know how much stress you feet endures whenever you run/walk/frolic to wherever it is your going.

Eat's A Date: Moshi Moshi

It's been a while since I've attended an Eat's A Date event (work was getting in the way of my blogging. Hehe). So when I read on their Facebook fan page that they were having one in Katipunan, I immediately signed up for it! I was so excited because Katipunan is like my second home and what even got me more hyped up was when I read that this would be the biggest Eat's A Date so far - with 30 participants! This time around, we're going Japanese at Moshi Moshi.

Fun fact: Moshi Moshi actually means "hello" in Japanese, you use this
phrase when you're answering the phone.

It's located at Regis Center which the new building in Katipunan (in front of Ateneo Gate 3)

The crew greeted us with warm smiles.

But what really grabbed my attention was the numerous Kitkat boxes at the front. These are obviously from Japan and they come in all flavors imaginable - green tea, cherry, melon, and more. Yummy!

Some of the bloggers present, I was a wee bit early so I took photos of the place first.

I really like the color scheme of the whole place, it's very clean and fresh with all the greens and whites. Plus their chairs were pretty comfy too!

Before they served the food, one of the waiters from Moshi Moshi entertained us by having a trivia contest about everything Japanese. The prize was this cool mug that changes from black to (see photo above) when you pour hot water in it. Pretty sweet huh? Too bad I didn't get one. :p

Now for the food. I've eaten in Moshi Moshi before (I think last year pa), so I was really looking forward to trying out their other dishes as well.

First up, they asked us to choose from their bento choices, they were serving us bento boxes that will be available in April - but we were lucky because we're one of the first ones to try them! :)

It's Choose Your Own Adventure - Bento Style. Our table chose
Curry and Chicken Mayo - they have Gyu (Beef) also.

Chicken Mayo Bento - with Kani Salad, Onion Rings, and Meatballs.
This was very tasty. And their servings are for those with a big appetite (like me)!

Curry Bento - It has the same sides but the main dish is curry rice. We were kinda surprised with this dish because we were looking for meat in our curry but it was all veggies. The curry isn't the Indian or Thai curry that we're used to - it's a bit sweeter actually.

Takoyaki (6 pcs. P55)- topped with bonito flakes, drizzled with Japanese mayo and a kind of sweet sauce. This was okay, I wish the outer layer was a bit more crunchy.

California Maki (8 pcs. P139) - Each piece was way to big to fit in my mouth so it's actually really filling.

Gyoza (5 pcs. P95) - I'm not a fan of Gyoza, but I did like Moshi Moshi's version of this staple Japanese dish. The crunchy, fried side of the Gyoza was a great contrast to the soft and warm filling. I dipped it in their chili oil sauce and it was perfect!

Milk Tea (P55) - Not too sweet, very milky, just the way I like it.

Miso Soup (P35) - Made from really miso. Perfect for the rainy
summer that we're having right now.

A huge (did I mention HUGE) boat of salad. Everyone was really surprised
when they brought this out because it was humongous!

Another salad boat! This time it's a Kani Salad with Kani Tempura - I love kani salad so I definitely enjoyed this one. Wasn't able to finish the whole thing though. Haha.

Aside from the Choose Your Own Bento that I've mentioned above, they also served Special Bento Boxes which are good for two persons. Well, if I'm really hungry, it's just good for me :P

Ume (P280) - Chicken Mayo, Curry, Kani Salad, California Maki, and Kimchi (kinda lost me there because Kimchi is usually found in Korean restaurants). Again I really liked the Chicken Mayo because the chicken is cooked well and tender. I tried to eat it with Kimchi and surprisingly it worked for me.

Ta-ke (P280) - Shrimp Tempura, Gyudon, Gyoza, Salad, and Corn. For those who want a traditional Japanese meal, you can opt for this. Definitely a must-try.

Gin (P320) - Chicken Teriyaki, Tonkatsu, California Maki, Curry, and Kimchi. This is probably my favorite one out of all. Their Chicken Teriyaki is perfect! The sauce didn't drown the chicken so you can still taste the meat. The Tonkatsu was cooked perfectly as well. I tried to pair the Tonkastsu with the Kimchi and it was yummy! :) My tummy was definitely happy!

I like how their water bottles have a Moshi Moshi label. My sister actually has one of these, she uses it as her emergency water bottle.

Final Verdict:
YAYs: The food is really good, they do live up to their claim of serving authentic (not to mention really affordable) Japanese food. I especially liked their Chicken Mayo, Chicken Teriyaki, and Tonkatsu. The place is also very inviting because of their fresh and clean interiors. I'm a little biased because it's in Katipunan so it's very accessible for me. Lastly, their staff and crew are super nice and accommodating.
NAYs: I wished they served ramen, just to give the customers more choices. Not really a NAY, more of a suggestion. :)

The Burning House - Where is Myka? Edition

A few months ago, I've stumbled upon this blog called The Burning House. Basically, it asks a very simple question. If your house was burning, what would you take with you?

The question itself seems very simple but it really makes you think of what is "valuable" in terms if what you want, need, or have been attached too. It's a pretty interesting read actually, if you've browsed through it already, you can get hooked for hours. It's curious to see how people from different places and backgrounds are so similar and different at the same time.

I decided to make my own version of it. I want to submit actually but not now, when I'm braver and smarter with my choices. In the meantime, here is something I've put together which I did in just under 10 minutes (well, if your house is burning you should be in a hurry right?).

Pardon the title, but there's no other word to describe this enlightenment of mine. I have caught the Sherlock fever (a tad too late, actually) and I am going crazy because the next season will be out not until ~~2013~~ (edit: 2014) and right now I don't know what I am going to to do with my life! *hyperventilates*

I would like to thank Hanna for introducing me to Sherlock BBC. I have to admit, I had my doubts at first because I've always been so loyal to RDJ but hey, it's Sherlock Holmes, they're in London, and they're doing a very modern take on Sir Doyle's stories, I might as well give it a shot.

It's a strange feeling really, I had all 6 episodes (2 seasons, 3 episodes, almost 90 minutes per episode), I started to watch it and the next thing I knew, it was 8pm already and I haven't done anything productive the whole day. And after the 6th episode ended, I sat down for a few minutes and asked myself, "so what I am gonna do until the next season comes out?"

I don't know what got me into it. There is of course, the treatment (visual and narrative-wise) of Sherlock that has never been done before, there is the undoubted bromance between Sherlock and Watson. There is the excitement of every chase, of every Game. The unforgettable, oh-so-quotable lines; the wit, humour, and sarcasm, that I absolutely look for in every show I should watch.

But ultimately, there is one outstanding reason why I am so undeniably obsessed with this show -- Benedict Cumberbatch.

Alveo Land Impromptu Street Concert

A few weeks back, I went to Bonifacio High Street to cover Alveo Land's 10th year anniversary for When In Manila. The invite said that there will be an impromptu street concert by Rico Blanco. Yep, you read right. An impromptu street concert. As in when we arrived there (it was around 5pm) there wasn't much just some speakers and lights being set-up then after an hour or so, voila! A truck rolled out and became a stage, Rico Blanco went up the "stage" and began to sing and the people who were passing by (surprised of course) stopped listened.

It didn't take long for the crowd to gather and listen to Mr. Blanco.

Rico Blanco was (how do I say this) amazing and charming - fangirl? Haha. But seriously, he was really able to captivate the crowd while he was singing titles from Rivermaya as well as his own.

I wish there were more events like this. It kinda reminds me of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, you know, when they were searching for Fluffy? :)

Zao Vietnamese Bistro

After Cheska's High School Graduation, we decided to go to Eastwood to have lunch. We were supposed to eat at Kogi but changed our minds at the last second and decided to go next door at Zao Vietnamese Bistro.

This is actually not my first time at Zao. What I really like about this place aside from the food are their interiors, their posh red chairs and modern-style furniture makes you think that their prices are expensive but are surprisingly reasonable.

But enough about that, let's go straight to what we ate. :)

Crispy Spring Rolls (P195) - stuffed with pork, vegetables, mushrooms, and glass noodles, served with lettuce, bean sprouts and dipping sauce. You dip the spring rolls in vinegar then wrap it with lettuce. Yum! Probably my favorite dish, we were tempted to order 2 plates but stopped ourselves because we ordered a lot already.

Seafood Noodle Stir Fry (P235) - shrimps, squid, fish balls, and vegetables. You might be wondering where the noodles are, well they're under the generous amount of seafood and vegetables, the noodles were thick and heavy (and delicious as well).

Water Spinach with Crispy Pork Belly (P185) - sauteed in garlic. This one was also really good and I surprisingly had a lot of this (because I don't like veggies that much). Can you see the thick cut of fat right there? I bet you had a mini-heart attack just looking at it.

Zao Satay Platter (P345) - combination of pork, beef, chicken, and shrimp satay, served with spiced vinegar. The beef was little tough and my sister said the shrimp didn't taste fresh. Guess it was just okay.

Stuffed Tofu (P185) - with minced pork, mushroom, and glass noodles. Another dish that surprised me because it was really good. The flavors were really simple but yummy.

Saigon Fried Rice (P215) - with shrimps, Chinese sausage, and green peas.

Zao Fried Rice (P195) - with seafood and salted egg. Kinda remind me of
tuyo fried rice, too salty for me.

Verdict? I loved the Stuffed Tofu and Crispy Spring Rolls. Zao Vietnamese Bistro has an extensive menu so you can choose different dishes everytime you visit. The prices are very reasonable too and the servings are quite big. The service is also nice and as I mentioned earlier the interiors are something worth visiting as well. Most of the dishes fall on the "safe" side though. I've yet to try their Pho - so this means I'm going back? Definitely.

Cheska's Highschool Graduation

Last Saturday, the family went to St. Bridget School, QC for Cheska's highschool graduation. It's been a while since I last visited Bridget (the three of us all studied here - and yes, three girls, you can imagine the riot we have at home) and the place has changed a lot.

I was actually really sleepy (the ceremonies started at 9am) because I only had 3 hours of sleep (blame Doctor Who for this) but of course, I wouldn't miss this for anything and also because I was the designated photographer. HAHA.

But this graduation gave awards not just to the students but also to the parents. My mom and dad received a plaque of appreciation for having the three of us graduate in St. Bridget. Apparently, they give this to parents who have three or more daughters who graduate in SBS.

After all the hoopla of diploma distribution and awarding (which lasted around 2 hours), the SBS Batch of 2012 went up on stage to sing their graduation song and the alma mater.

Even though the weather was super hot, we enjoyed the whole thing because it signified the start of my sister's new adventure - college! :) So to Cheska (I know you're reading this), I wish you all the luck. I know everything seems so intimidating and scary and exciting all at the same time, but trust me, you'll be fine. :p

Isabelo Garden Restaurant in Marikina

I've been meaning to write something decent and readable here for the past few weeks and I've been making up several excuses in my head as to why I haven't been writing here but alas, all I can give you is this - there some personal issues I have to attend to so I'm really sorry.

On a related note, though I haven't been writing here, my review of Isabelo Garden Restaurant in When In Manila is now up. We had so much fun chatting with Portia and stuffing ourselves with the food that she served us! Honestly, I can't wait to go back. :)

For those of you who aren't familiar with Isabelo, it's a secret restaurant in Marikina that serves Tuscan comfort food. The interiors are very rustic with it's antique furniture, old photographs, and old perfume bottles. Believe when I say that the experience of dining in Isabelo is simply magical.

Valentine's Dinner at the Upstairs Room

To tell you honestly, Gelo and I - having been together for almost 7 years - don't really make a big fuss about Valentine's Day. We celebrate it with prolly a dinner or a movie, we might exchange trinkets and something. But we've never made any big gestures for each other for this Hallmark Holiday.

Such is the case for this year's Valentine's Day. Though we do think that we've taken it up a notch because we actually decided to make a reservation and actually set ourselves a few days before with what we're going to do.

We decided to have dinner at Cubao X (I know not really what you'd expected for a Valentine's Day destination), at Penpen's Resto / Upstairs Room. It was a really intimate evening, only 4 couples were there, us being one of them.

We had a 6-course meal (oh heaven). And here's what we had.

We started with an amuse-bouche of Grilled Eggplant, with Chicken Pate, Baked Garlic, Smoked Salinas, and Muscovado Honey. This okay. A little salty with a very strong flavor or alamang and garlic.

Oysters and Garlic on Toasted Bread. This was Gelo's appetizer for this set menu but of course I had to taste it as well. The Oysters were fresh and flavorful and the creamy sauce blended well with it.

Pan Fried Scallops with Quezo de Bola Butter - This one I really, really, really like! The Scallops literally melts in your mouth and the Quezo de Bola Butter (which was perfect - not salty at all) compliments it. I am salivating as I am looking at the picture. They only thing I didn't like about this dish is that they only served a pair. I was so selfish with this that I only had Gelo taste half a scallop. Hahaha.

Sweet Potato and Clam Soup - Really strong clam flavor. Gelo liked it
but I wasn't much of a fan.

Creamy Calabasa Soup with Nutmeg - I liked this one also :) The thickness of the
soup was perfect (filling but not heavy).

Salad with Suha and Lato - Gelo had this and he said it was good. I didn't attempt to try it because I'm not a fan of neither Suha or Lato.

Greens with Orange, Grapes, and Strawberries - Just an ordinary salad. Nothing special.

Now while waiting for our main course, we had more wine! :)

And now the main event a.k.a. main course --

Herbed Feta Cheese Dory with White Button Mushroom Risotto - The fish was perfectly good and moist but it was kinda of salty. Good thing it was balanced by the risotto which was cooked well. Their serving was pretty huge also!

Rib-eye Steak Tapa with Baby Bella Mushroom Risotto and Baked Egg in Avocado - This was a really interesting dish! We mixed the egg in the avocado and dipped the steak in it. The rib-eye was tender and flavorful. Gelo did like the Baby Bella Mushroom because of its really pungent flavor.

We capped our meal with a LOVE POTION - Shot of German dark chocolate in Jager with Strawberry to finish. The alcohol was really strong and the chocolate absorbed it so we werent' about to finish this one.

Overall, we enjoy our meal. It's nice to just sit down, relax, and enjoy good food. The whole dinner lasted about 3 hours which gave us lots of time to catch up and talk about different things. :)

Paper Lions

I haven't been blogging for a long time so now I have this sudden energy to blog all night, I'm not gonna ignore this urge and I'm gonna write, write, write.

Anyways, I was thinking of what I can write here and while I was listening to my iTunes, Paper Lion's Traveling came up, then I realize, why don't write about them? :)

Paper Lions (formerly known as Chucky Danger Band) is a indie rock band from Canada (no, don't start with the Canadian jokes). I stumbled upon them when I was listening to Foster the People's single, Love and their video Traveling was one of the related video featured on the side.

And boy was I glad that I clicked on them! Some people may think that they're too mainstream to be an indie band because of their pretty boy faces and their pop-ish beats, but for me, they're the type of band you'd put on full blast if you want to start your day happy and BV-free.

They've actually been around for quite some time now (since 2004) they've had four albums since then, their latest being Trophies which was released last 2010.

Aside from Traveling, I also like The Sheriff, Strawberry Man, and Bones. I'd be super thrilled if they came here in Manila and did a show.

Riza's Despedida de Soltera

Nope, she's not really getting married. I don't know why we called it that but really, this was just a farewell thing for Riza now that she's resigned from Lifestyle Network. We went to Rub in Scout Rallos.

While waiting for our food, we played a game of Meron o Wala, where Riza revealed her true feelings for Hanna. Basically, the game went like this -- Riza placed a paper over her head and we asked her "Riza, meron ka ba nito or wala?", and then she had to guess. One of the questions was this --

To which Riza answered (with full conviction) WALANG WALA!!! Aww, poor Hanna. :((

Gelo was bored because he was surrounded with crazy and noisy girls. Haha.

Good thing the food came na! :)

Jil had a buffalo chicken sandwich with coleslaw on the side.

I had Cajun Chicken with Cream Pasta (It was yummy and filling!
Chicken and cream are the best!)

But Rub is known for their Ribs which was really tender and tasty.
That's a half-slab right there with rice and your choice of siding.
