Draycote Water Races no longer organized

Roger Wilkes, the organizer of the Draycote Water Races has just released the news.

The Draycote Water 35 and the Draycote Water Marathon that used to take place in February in the Draycote Water Country Park (England) will no longer be held.

Severn Trent Water have adopted the policy not to stage any more races at Draycote Water Country Park.

Go! St. Louis® Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend Registrations up 40% over Last Year’s Record Year

Marathon and Half Marathon Registration Trends Indicate Early Sellouts

ST. LOUIS (MO) – November 5, 2009 – GO! St. Louis, a not-for-profit organization that specializes in presenting fitness events and programs announced today that registrations for the 10th Annual G0! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend are 40% ahead of last year’s record-breaking entry numbers. Only eight weeks into the registration period and every race is experiencing substantial entry increases. The half marathon race, which is the largest in Missouri and one of largest in the Midwest with more than 10,000 registrants, continues to increase in popularity.

The two-day fitness event, set for April 10 & 11, 2010, has become a national model for other organizations, and features 10 different races for all ages and fitness levels. The event started in 2000 with 2,500 participants and increased to more than 18,000 in 2009. The GO! St. Louis Family Fitness Weekend features a marathon – presented by Subway, half marathon – presented by National City (now part of PNC), Marathon Relay presented by Lockton Companies, 5K Run/Walk, GO! St. Louis Read, Right and Run Marathon®, Children’s Fun Runs and a Mature Mile.

GO! St. Louis has added numerous 10th anniversary incentives and promotions to celebrate and to express appreciation to participants for their continued support of the event over the years. Among the new promotions is prize money for age group winners and random $100 registration bonuses.

9 questions to discover a marathon : First Light Marathon

Marty O’Malley has been involved with L’Arche since 1976 and the race director since the beginning.

Hello, on January 10th 2009, you’ll be organizing the First Light Marathon . Can you tell us where it is located?

The banktrust First Light Marathon will be held in Mobile, AL in the USA.

How old is the race and why was it created in the first place?

This is the 9th year, The race was begun as a way to promote L’Arche Mobile, a christian community that shares life with people with an intellectual disablity. This was also a way to try to raise money for L’Arche and to promote the city of Mobile.

What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?

The first 10 miles are flat, then there is a gradual incline with a challenging hill at mile 17.5 that is 200 feet in 1/4 mile. From there it is a gradual decline.

How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?

We will attract over 1500 people for all four events, we have many first time marathoners and a number of 50 staters (runners on their way to run 50 marathons in the 50 states).

Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?

Yes we have a 13.1 mile run, a 5 person relay and a 1.2 mile run. We are walker and race walker friendly as well.

At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?

Our lows can be from the mid 30’s (°F) to the low 50’s (1 to 10°C), our highs could be in the mid 50’s to the mid 70’s (10 to 21°C).

Have you planned festivities around the marathon?

Yes we have an expo, a pre race meal with live music on Saturday. On Sunday we have a concert with about 5 different bands for about 5 1/2 hours plus we have lunch for the participants.

The marathon finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Mobile before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing?

We have a number of local retaurants, we have fantastic beaches with white sand and blue water. We also have many historic homes and a number of gardens worth seeing.

In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the First Light Marathon?

Great value that includes 2 meals, 20 water stops, live music saturday, concert on sunday, hand decorated medallions by the residents of L’Arche and over 4500 people on the course for support.

9 questions to discover a marathon : Beauty of Shuang-si Taipei County Marathon

This week our journey around the world leads us to the Northern part of Taipei in Asia.

Leonard Pin-chen Lo, a member of Taipei County Marathon Association will present us the race his association organizes. Leonard is an accomplished runners, having finished 33 marathons so far.

“Hope to see you, readers of ahotu Marathons, in Shuang-si Marathon in 2010!”

Hello, on February 28th, you’ll be organizing the Beauty of Shuang-si Taipei County Marathon. Can you tell us where it is located?

This race will be held in Shuang-si, a township amid beautiful mountains in Northern Taiwan.

How old is the race and why was it created in the first place?

In 2010, it would be the 2nd Shuang-si Marathon.

What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?

The route of this marathon is the mountainside, also called “Cherry Blossom Blvd.”, starting from a small elementary school in Downtown Shuang-si, crossing over “Resignation Hill” and the countryside amid the valley, and the turnaround point in the deep mountain.

Along the route, the runners can enjoy the serene and beautiful mountain and simple countryside, and appreciate the plants Shuang-si Township Administrative Office has planted along the road. Though the runners would be painful for conquering the long slope and several up and down hill, the beautiful scenery along the whole route, we believe, would give them more fun and deeper impression.

How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?

This February, we were surprised that nearly 1000 runners joining us. We hope that there will be more than 1000 runners to join us in 2010.

We don’t expect the so-called “elite runner” to join this race. On the contrary, we welcome everyone who enjoy marathon to come. As long as you are a runner, whether a pro or only an amateur, we hope you can participate in this race.

Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?

We are only a running club in Taiwan. Thus, we only hold one marathon race a year and don’t organize other races on the weekend.

At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?

It’s still winter in February, and the weather in Shuag-si oftentimes is cold and humid. The average temperature is around 12 to 16 Celsius degree. Though a bit cold, it should be a good weather for runners.

Have you planned festivities around the marathon?

We are negotiating this with Shuang-si Township Administrative office, seeing if they plan to hold other activities on that day. The only thing we can ensure is that the race in 2010 would be the same day for Lantern Festival in Taiwan. Runners from abroad can have a chance to experience this unique Chinese culture.

If runners arrive in Shuang-si a day before the race, they can experience firing the sky lantern besides Shuang-si River.

The marathon finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Shuang-si before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing?

Shuang-si is a small town with inartificial scenery. I think the runners can rent a bike in front of the train station and spend a few hours having a nice bike traveling along the bike path. Also, visitors can enjoy the Taiwanese cuisine here.

In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Beauty of Shuang-si Taipei County Marathon?

If you are looking for a race with beautiful nature around you plus a group of enthusiastic volunteers serving you, this is it! Don’t worry about the communication problem. We have several volunteers good at English to give you the best service.
