If you have the time to make your own invitations, here are a few ideas to consider:

Send a message in a bottle! Thoroughly wash and dry old soda bottles. Write your party details on a slip of paper, roll it up, and slide it inside. Make sure the paper is rolled tightly and secured so it will easily slip out of the bottle once your guests receive it.

Make a treasure map invitation. Cut a jagged edge around a piece of brown construction paper to give the paper the illusion of being burned. Draw a crude map of your neighborhood on one side, with a dotted line leading from one edge of the paper to a big X, marking where your home would be. Write your party details on the opposite side of your map.

Punch a hole in the corner of a card-style invitation and attach it to a bag of Pirate gold nugget gum. Hand-deliver these to your guests.

Cut the shape of a skull and crossbones out of black construction paper. Write your party details in gold pen.

Include creative wording for your party details, such as:

Come sail a ship on the Seven Seas,
With Captain James and his crew!

Pirate Party Decorations

To get your guests in the mood for buried treasure and sea battles, consider these options for decorations:

As guests arrive, give them each a black bandana and eye patch to wear during the party. You can even dot on rough beards with face paint and clip gold hoop earrings to their ears.

Make a treasure chest to place in one corner of the party area. Cover a large shoebox with brown construction paper and strips of gold foil. Fill it with shells, plastic necklaces, faux jewels, and gold coins.

Hang fishing nets from the walls and ceiling.

Cover the tables in the party area with blue tablecloths. Sprinkle sand, seashells, and faux pearls on top.

Make a skull and crossbones out of white construction paper and black markers, and hang it on one wall of the party area.

Pirate Party Food Ideas

Get creative with your party food by serving theme-specific treats. For a Pirate Party, consider the following ideas:

A fun main dish to serve to your sea-faring travelers is chicken or turkey legs – without utensils! Let them eat like real pirates!

Place a few cranberries and gold nugget candies in the bottom of a clear plastic cup. Make blue Jell-o to pour into the cup. The end result will look like a bit of ocean and sunken treasures.

Tint a bag of Chex cereal green with a little food coloring. Mix with goldfish crackers and call it “Swimming with the Fishes Snack”.

Make “Sea Water” by coloring pitchers of apple juice with blue food coloring, and serve with shaped straws.

Cook seashell-shaped pasta and spinach linguini and serve chilled with a little butter. Call it “Seaweed & Shells Pasta."

Serve root beer in frosted mugs or goblets.

Make a simple pirate cake by baking a 9" x 13" cake and frosting it in grey frosting. With decorator icing, draw a treasure map, complete with a compass, a dotted line trail, and an X that marks the spot. Or, use our pirate ship cake pan instead!

Ice Cream Party Invitation Ideas

Scoop up the excitement early in the planning stage by sending your guests creative invitations. You can purchase or if you have the time, here are some delicious-looking options.

Include a small treat or toy with your invites that fit the theme. For an ice cream party you could include a spoon, a packet of rainbow sprinkles or some ice cream flavored candy.

Create a banana split or large ice cream sundae filled with toppings (or order one at a restaurant) and then take a photo. This photo can be the front of your invitation. On your computer you can use photo manipulation software to write "We All Scream for Ice Cream!" on top of the photo. Print out enough copies of the photo on cardstock paper and then print the party details on the back of each photo.

Draw or use a computer illustration program to create a dessert menu. Along with food and ice cream you will be serving, the menu can feature the date and time of the party. Print out enough copies for your guests and mail with a plastic spoon.

Ice Cream Party Food Ideas

In addition to pizza, chicken fingers or hamburgers, you can add some ice cream inspired treats into the mix. Here are some tasty suggestions.

Hotdog Split: Place a hot dog that's sliced in half horizontally on a bun open face and serve inside a banana spilt boat. Surround the hot dog slices with ketchup, mustard and relish or with chili or macaroni and cheese.

Use an ice cream shaped cookie cutter to make small shaped sandwiches. You can serve peanut butter and jelly or lunch meat on whole grain bread.

Serve fresh piping hot waffles with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Serve veggies in ice cream sundae dishes or banana boats.

Ice Cream Cake Recipe

Here are directions for making an easy and delicious ice cream cake. For this recipe you will need a box of cake mix, a tub of whipped cream, a box of crumbled Oreo cookies and a carton of ice cream that comes in a rectangular container.

First, bake two 9" x 13" cakes with your favorite cake mix.

Let the cakes cool.

Remove the ice cream completely from the tub.

Slice the ice cream in half horizontally using fishing line or thread. Then, place the ice cream side by side on top of one layer of cake.

Sprinkle the crushed Oreo cookie crumbs on top of the ice cream. Press down lightly on the crumbs so they go into the ice cream a bit.

Carefully place the other layer of cake on top of the layer of cookie crumbs.

Trim the cake so that it's the same size as the ice cream.

Freeze the cake until it is very firm.

Before serving, frost the cake with whipped cream and decorate as you choose.

10 tips to a successful party

I love throwing parties for my kids. Birthdays, holidays, meeting the kids from school, or even just great weather are all reason enough for me. I enjoy the party prep and I have fun seeing their anticipation as the big day approaches, but their happiness at the event itself is my biggest payoff.

Sometimes after parties, parents will ask how I pulled it all together, and as their own child's special day comes closer, I've gotten phone calls and emails asking for suggestions or asked to lend I hand. I'm always flattered, and since putting together celebrations is something I enjoy, I am happy to help.

I don't want to say my parties are the pinnacle of perfection; the people from Martha Stewart haven't tried to hire me to their staff, but here are my top 10 secrets to party success.

10. Start early. If you wait until a day or two before the party, suddenly the amount of work is overwhelming, and getting ready is not any fun because it is stressful. But if you start a week, or even 10 days early, you can spread it out, and just do one or two small tasks each day. Then the morning of the party, you can breathe and enjoy yourself, instead of turning into a frantic, cranky mother as you rush to string up the crepe paper.

9. Choose a theme. When I settle on a single thought I can direct my energies in one direction, and it is easier to think of games, decorations, party favors, cake designs, etc. It can also make remembering their day easier for them several months, or even years later. My seven year old can tell you what he did at his fourth birthday because he knows that they all tied into Disney characters. With no theme, parties may tend to run together in their minds. (Plus, it is cuter in the pictures! Everything matches!)

8. Let it be guided by your child's desires. It can be tempting to have the party you want (after all, you are the one doing the work) instead of the partyyour child wants. For example, I really wanted to do a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory birthday for one of my sons at his upcoming birthday. He thought it was a fun idea, but then told me that it would be better for his nextbirthday, because this time he wants a Sesame Street party. Okay. It is, after all,his birthday.

7. Set a budget, and stick to it. Children's birthday parties should not break the bank. Treat bags should not cost an arm and a leg to fill. Decide a reasonable amount for you to spend, and work within it. If you get creative, make rather than purchase the decorations, borrow some things from your friends, (remember to happily lend your items in return when they come looking for help) and get to know your local dollar store, you really can put together a beautiful, fun, and memorable day for your kids.

6. Watch your numbers. A basic rule of thumb is to invite as many guests as they child's age. If they are turning seven, then a guest list of seven should be enough. There obviously has to be a little wiggle room here, to account for siblings etc, but a party of 15 three-year-olds is going to turn into a hectic zoo.

5. If at all possible, try to hold at least some of the party outdoors. Loud, noisy children are easier to love where they aren't filling a room with their own voice. There is more room to play a physical activity in the yard then say, in your living room. Games are easier to clean up, the pictures turn out nicer, and you don't even have to mop up the icing from off your kitchen floor. Good reasons, all, to take it out back. (That being said, you should have a back-up plan in your head just in case you get an unseasonably rainy, windy, or cold day)

4. Write it down. Entertaining a group of kids for two or three hours takes a lot of planning and even a bit of strategy. You need mix up the quiet games with the loud games, with the crafts, with the snacks... The list of activities gets long fast, and if you write down all the things you want to do, and the order you want to do them, you won't miss something during the hustle and bustle of the party. I write it on a 3"x5" card and stick it in my back pocket. Whenever I need to know what is coming up, I just whip it out, and we stay on track.

3. Make and keep traditions. It is fun to have something that is always going to be at the parties you have. For our family, it is a pinata. We have pinatas at every birthday party we host. They aren't terribly difficult to make, you can fill them with whatever you want, and they are fun to smash. Granted, pinatas need a few days to make, but if you are starting early in your preparations, this isn't a problem. And if all else fails, you can grab one at a store for a little extra cash. If pinatas aren't your thing, fine, but find something that your kids love, and that you can see growing with them each year, and try to create a consistent element across all your parties.

2. Have enough help. On the day of the event, even if you have done all your prep and planning well, it is so much easier to pull it all off if you have an extra adult or two to help you out. While you are manning the craft, your husband, sister, mother-in-law, etc can be getting the materials for the next game ready. While you are taking pictures of the birthday boy with his cake, they can be getting the garbage bag ready for the napkins, paper plates, and plastic forks that will soon need to be disposed of. Things run so much more smoothly, and it lets you live in the moment a little more.

1. Relax. Remember that parties are supposed to be fun, happy things. If you are getting too wound up trying to make the perfect cake, design cute little decorations, or worrying that your daughter's hair stays in perfect ringlets, you are missing the whole point. Take a deep breath, and remember that those little details in the end, aren't what the kids will take away from this. They are going to remember the way their party made them feel like the most important person in the world, and that is what we are aiming for.

The Thank-Yous

Once it’s over, make sure you and your child thank the guests. Get a set of eight Construction Trucks Thank You Notes. If your kid is not old enough to write the cards or his name, at least have him help color or decorate the notes so he gets the idea of being a gracious host.

Here a just a few tips to help plan the best beach party ever:

1. When planning a beach party you must first choose the who, what, when, where. In this case since it is a beach party you want to pick out a nice beach that is family oriented and the best in town meaning no fighting seaweed, and no walking on rocks.

2. After you choose the who, what, when, and where it's time for invitations. Since this is a beach party I would say choose a beach themed invitation. look into various ways to make do it yourself invitations for beach parties.

3. After invitations are signed, sealed, and delivered its now time to pick out your decorations. Again party city is a great place to find the decorations you're looking for. Balloons, poppers, and streamers are just a few of my favorites for a beach themed party. For a more simple do it yourself decorations purchase various rolls of colored tissue paper and you can twist and braid them yourself to give your party the look you desire.

4. As far as food goes I suggest a nice beach barbeque. Hot dogs, Hamburgers, chips, and a fruit salad are ideal for a beach party and easy. If you so choose you can either bake a cake or buy a cake at your local grocery store. Finger foods can also work perfectly. Chicken Tenders, Finger Sandwiches, Pig in the blankets, or Chicken wings are also easy picks for the beach.

5. Also try to select a variety of games to keep the children occupied. Volleyball nets or playgrounds can be a plus when choosing your beach destination these are two activities that can keep your children entertained for hours at a time. Other activities can include touch tag, or plan a scavenger hunt around the beach. The internet has tons of fun games for children to pick from.
