Whenever there is a disaster, the communication infrastructure is diminished if not entirely destroyed. There is no cell-phone service or Internet. There is no way to communicate for emergency personnel.

Ham Radio or Amateur Radio comes to the rescue.

Ham Radio Operators have been monitoring the frequencies set aside for emergency communications. On the second day of the disaster Ham Radio Operators through the Salvation Army Team Emergency Network or SATERN passed more than 60,000 emergency inquiries.

Currently there is a team from the Dominican Republic setting up a radio tower, repeaters, and other emergency communications to help with the communications efforts.

When telephones, internet, and power are cut off, Amateur Radio fills vital communications needs. Fred Moore of Florida, callsign W3ZU provides a radio/telephone patch for Jean-Robert Gaillard, callsign HH2JR, of Port au Prince.

This is the information that went out to Ham Radio Operators:

On Tuesday (January 12) there was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti , which has since been followed by serious aftershocks. Communications in and out of Haiti have been disrupted. No word has been received as of yet from any of the national HH Amateur Radio operators. The

DailyDX notes that HH2/HB9AMO, Pierre , is OK and was located about 140 km north of Port-au-Prince in Cap Haitien at the time.

The IARU Region II Area C Emergency Coordinator, Arnie Coro, CO2KK, is coordinating the multi-national response by hams. There are organized nets on 7045 and 3720 kHz and amateurs are asked to monitor but also keep the frequencies clear of non-essential traffic. Amateur Radio operators should also be aware that emergency traffic pertaining to the Haitian earthquake is expected on the SATERN frequencies of 14265, 7265 and 3977. Amateur Radio operators are circled around Haiti in Cuba , Florida , the Dominican Republic , Puerto Rico , Venezuela and other locations listening for any calls. Please stay clear of the following frequencies:

Survived Christmas 2009

Christmas 2009 is over. It was a little crazy this year. We were blessed to have almost everyone home this year. James, Sean, Gina were here as well as my Utah Kids, Wesley, Corey and Christian.

Corey was super hyper active the entire two weeks! This made it kind of tough! Also there was the constant changing of the diapers and cleaning Corey up.

Christian is afraid of our newest Labrador Dog, "Carter". So he screams anytime Carter gets near him.

Speaking of the dogs, Annie, one of our Corgi's, decided to go into heat the entire Christmas break. This caused much hyper-activity amongst our other two male dogs, Jake and Carter. This caused Jake to mark his territory all over the house! This caused Carter to whine and bark frequently which fed more screaming for Christian who is autistic and very afraid of BIG dogs.

We did manage a ski trip at Breckenridge, which was great for Wesley and myself, but not so great for Merial since she got stuck baby-sitting Corey and Christian. It was a little stressful with Corey's constant vocal "Eee-EEee-Eeee" (If you know Corey, you know what I mean).

We were blessed to have everyone but it's always a culture shock when all the kids get together, since we don't always have the opportunity to have them all during the year.

It is a blessing for my daughter Gina to be spending her Senior year here in Colorado with Dad!

I'm grateful for Merial for putting up with me and all the kids! In spite of all the chaos I really love our non-traditional family. I know the kids are all growing up so fast and we won't have these chaotic opportunities much longer.

It was a Merry, Crazy Christmas!

LCROSS - Didn't see much

The LCROSS Centaur and Spacecraft impacted the moon at approximately 4:30 a.m. PDT. Scientists are reviewing the initial data and will report what they know at a Post Impact News Conference at 7:00 a.m. PDT / 10:00 a.m. EDT on NASA TV.

If you're bummed you didn't get up early to watch NASA's Lunar Rocket slam into the Moon, well... you didn't miss much. I got up at 4:15 am and started watching NASA Live TV and News Feeds. I know there were people gathered around the world to watch this event. I just watched it out of my home office.

I am a bit disappointed because I was expecting more. I've been following this mission since July. I just hope that NASA has some excellent data for review.

Registration starts at 8:00am.
The ride starts out at Columbine High School at 11:00am then we ride up Highway 285 through Conifer and up to Baily where we end up at Platte Canyon High School.

Ham Radio Field Day 2009 , June 27 to 28

Every fourth full weekend in June thousands of Ham Radio Operators or Amateur Radio Operators head out with emergency power and set up portable radio stations to practice their operating skills to make as many contacts as possible.

This year will be my first "Field Day" that I've participated in. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm heading out past Kiowa Colorado in a field with a bunch of other Ham Radio Operators.

The Future Begins May 8th - Star Trek

One of the first TV shows I remember watching with my Dad in the 60's was Star Trek. The others were Bonanza and Gunsmoke. But I really loved Star Trek! I can't say I'm a trekkie. I am definitely a Star Trek Fan! I've been to two or thee Star Trek Conventions in my time. I can't remember being this excited over a new release of a movie since... well. Since Star Wars!

The new Star Trek 2009 launches tomorrow starring James Tiberius Kirk, legendary starship captain, modeled in part on C.S. Forester's heroic Admiral Horatio Hornblower and partly on Alexander the Great played by the peerless William Shatner (though only after Jack Lord demanded too much money), and conqueror of the infamous "no-win" Kobayashi Maru test though, as critic

Dave Bushman points out, only after cheating by reprogramming the computer.

This 11th movie in the Star Wars epic explores the backstories of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), before they unite aboard the USS Enterprise to combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from the future who threatens the United Federation of Planets.

Our local LDS Church Stake sent out an announcement last month that they were supporting a Ham Radio Class to enhance Emergency Preparedness and encouraged anyone interested to attend. I was already a Ham Radio Operator, Technicial Class. I came up with a plan. I told some friends of ours, another IT buddy - who had recently expressed interest in becoming a Ham Radio Operator, about the class. I went a step further and said that my wife, Merial, would attend if his wife, Jen, would attend. Then I went home and told my wife, Merial, that Jen would attend only if Merial would attend. They all agreed! Pretty sneaky!

Merial and I and a couple of friends, and other interested parties, have been attending the Ham Radio Class for the last 6 weeks.

Then, last week, my kids came over. My son, Wesley, is 14 years old and is a straight A student. I've encouraged him to study for a Ham Radio License before, but he only showed mild interest.

Well - I told him that he had two days to study and I was sure he could pass the test. I lectured about Ham Radio on the drive over from Utah to Colorado. We arrived in Denver on Wednesday. The last class was on Thursday. I helped Merial and Wesley a lot with study materials. They took practice tests over and over again.

The problem was that I also agreed to upgrade my License from a Technician to a General Class License! I spent so much time studying with them that I left my studying mostly until the night before. I studied throughout the night, and so did my Son, Wes. The next day we had a blizzard, but I was relieved that they didn't cancel the testing session in Franktown Colorado!

Merial and Wesley both passed the Technician Class Test the first time, so they will be getting their Ham Radio Licenses this week.

I failed my first attempt at the General Class. I took a second try and barely passed. If I would've missed one more question I wouldn't have passed! It wasn't pretty for me, but hey... a pass is a pass!

So... I now have a Ham Radio Family!

My son lives in Utah, but now we'll have one more way to communicate.

I'm taking the rest of the week off. Tuesday, I'm heading to Utah to pick up my four kids. Wednesday is the trip back. I have them until Sunday. That's the day I'm taking them back. Lot's of driving!

Motorcycle Accident, January 21 Wed

I wanted to write this earlier but it's difficult to type because my left hand is injured.

Last January 21st, at around 9am I decided to ride to work on my motorcycle. I new it was going to be another day in the 70's. I rode the bike the day before and it was gorgeous.

There was a lot of traffic for some reason that morning and that's not usually the case. I was riding east on County Line Road, just past Holly and before the turn off for the Saturn Dealer. Suddenly a car stopped right in front of me. There was a lot of traffic so I couldn't switch lanes, I was going about 45 to 50 mph. I locked my front brake (usually I use both front and back). My back part of the bike skidded to the right and I popped off the bike and rolled a few times. I got knocked out.

It happened so fast I don't remember much except rolling. Luckily I had my helmet on and my leather vest and jacket, or I wouldn't be here communicating with you. I passed out.

When I came to it was sort of foggy. At first I thought I was back in my bead, but then I realized I was somewhere else. It seemed like I was looking through a veil and I wondered if I was in heaven, but I soon realized it was just my scraped up face shield I was looking through. I realized I was flat on my back and I was looking up at the sky. I could feel lots of pain all on my left side. As I was looking up, some heads popped into view and I began to realize I was lying in the street and then I knew that I had been in an accident. I heard someone say to call 911 for EMS. I asked someone to raise my face shield, but they didn't seem to hear me so I took my right arm and hand and raised my shield. Then I asked for someone to remove my sun glasses and they said "don't touch or move him." So I took my right glove off with my teeth and took my shades off by myself. Now I could communicate better.

Soon EMS arrived and they checked me, and moved me into the paramedic vehicle. While they were taking me to the hospital I asked one of them to call my wife at work and bring me some clothes, since they were cutting off what was left of my clothes I had on. One of the paramedics asked my name. I began to spell my name out but he recognized the name. He said he had gone to high school with my brother. Wow.. back then I was just a little kid. I remembered him.

I finally arrived at the hospital and they wheeled me in. In time my wife showed up. I had X-Rays, and MRI, and other tests. I ended up with a broken collar-bone, a fractured rib, and a broken pinky finger... oh and a crushed blackberry device. They also took precautions for a concussion.

Now it's been a couple of weeks. Today is Sunday, February 8. I was off work for about 1 1/2 weeks. I've been back to work starting with half day working from home and half day in the office.

It was extremely painful the first week and I was on some heavy meds. Now I'm off the meds except Tylenol. But now my wife and I are battling the flu - Thanks Sean! (My step-son).

I am healing, but of course it's still painful. My left arm is in a sling, and my pinky is immobilized. I have a new Blackberry which is cool. It's difficult to type which is why it has taken me so long to update my blog.

I'm grateful for my $400 SHOI Helmet. At the time Merial thought it was too expensive but now she knows it was worth every penny. I'm not paralyzed or worse - I'm not dead! I also had gloves, a jacket and a leather vest on top of my jacket. The protection really saved me. I'll heal...

Now I'm bummed that I can't go skiing or ride for awhile. But who knows... Maybe I can get one day in at A-Basin in May. Yes.. I'll take it easy. And... I will ride again soon. My bike is ok actually, better shape than me.

There is one more thing I have mention. Merial and I said our prayers that Wednesday morning. I'm just thinking, what if we had skipped the prayer? I believe that God was watching out for me. My accident could've been much much worse. So... Don't forget to say your prayers! I know I won't.
