Legendary bass player Donald "Duck" Dunn has passed away at age 70 in Tokyo, Japan. He was in Tokyo for a series of performances at The Blue Note. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1941, he joined The Mar-Keys before sigining on with Booker T & The MGs in 1963. The band's instrumental hits include "Green Onions" and "Time Is Tight" but their lasting legacy is as architects of the Stax / Volt sound. At Stax Records, Duck laid down inumerable grooves behind artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas and Albert King performing on more than 600 recordings.

Levon Helm, drummer, singer and founding member of The Band, died at age 71 on 19 April from complications from cancer in New York City. When Bob Dylan went electric in 1965 / 1966, it was The Band that backed him up. In 1968, The Band released their debut album, Music From Big Pink. When Eric Clapton inducted them into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994, he cited it as an influential album and said when he first heard it, he wanted to head to Woodstock to join them.

Sir Peter Blake Celebrates 80th By Recreating Sgt. Pepper Sleeve. Clapton, McCartney And Winehouse Featured.

In 1967, Sir Peter Blake famously created The Beatles' album cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In celebration of his 80th birthday and for Wayne Hemingway's Vintage Festival, Blake reimagined the image. Gone are cutouts of actress Marilyn Monroe, comedians Lenny Bruce, W.C. Fields and even The Beatles as a group. For the project, he's chosen family, friends and "great people" including Eric Clapton, Amy Winehouse, Noel Gallagher, Kate Moss, John Peel, and Damien Hirst.

[Film trailer included at end of article] A new documentary, shot mostly at Ginger Baker's horse ranch in South Africa, took the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the South by Southwest Film Awards. Although "Beware of Mr. Baker" has been accepted at a number of other film festivals, director Jay Bulger is keeping those details under wraps. A wider distribution deal is also in the works. The 90 minute film grew out of the numerous hours of interviews Jay captured for his article "The Devil and Ginger Baker" which was published in Rolling Stone Magazine in August 2009.
