Anyway, these 2 islands are not far apart, 1h30 min is more than enough to get from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan by ferry.

I bought my ticket at my hostel. Usually, hostels provide this service, and it is easier to buy directly from the reception. That’s what I did. Well, in fact, I ended up buying from the hostel next door because at mine, they told me it was sold out!!! How come?! It wasn’t… I think I was just too late to buy it for the next day through them, as the reception was closing in 5 minutes. Anyway, I bought my ticket at Koh Tao hostel for 600bh, and I ended up using my own hostel- Carabao Dive Resort- free shuttle to the pier. Bonus points for me, haha, otherwise I would have to pay 100bh for a taxi to the pier, or walk for 30 min.

Koh Tao to Koh Phangan ferry schedule

There were several options available from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan. 7.30 am at 700bh, 9.30 am at 600bh, 10 am at 500bh and 3 pm at 600bh. The latter was my choice, even though it was at 3.30 pm, after all, they said. Well, it wasn’t at 3.30 pm because the ferry was delayed 1h!! Yes! I basically spent my afternoon at Koh Tao Pier waiting for this ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan, as the shuttle bus left the hostel at 2 pm.

All the ferries were delayed, not only the one to Koh Phangan. The pier is small and doesn’t seem ready to handle the number of people visiting this island at this time of the year. I visited in January, high season.

I can’t even describe the number of people I saw coming and going while waiting for more than 2h at the pier. JEEEEZ!! There were several ferries coming and going to different locations. Going to Samui, Bangkok, Chumpon, Surat Thani, hundreds and hundreds of people! WOW, I swear the last time I’ve seen so many Western people was in Australia (I live in Vietnam). It was also interesting to notice that 98% of those people coming and going were Caucasians. All Western tourists! This island really lives for tourism. I thought how weird it was to be on a boat in a country and only the staff being locals…

It seems like the pier is about to get bigger. It was under construction, and soon all the passengers might have a place to sit while waiting, which wasn’t the case this time. At some point, it started to rain. Not sure if the ferries were all delayed due to weather conditions. It could have been, because the ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan took about 1h30, but it is supposed to take 1h10.

The thing is that this pier doesn’t have the best conditions, and it started to rain on top of people… Everyone had to take shelter inside because outside, all the seats were wet. Luckily, the rain didn’t last long.

The journey was not what I’m used to in Thailand. The ferry rides are usually very peaceful and tranquil, but it was not the case. The ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan was swinging a lot, and I saw people vomiting, which isn’t very usual on board these ferries.

On board, Lomprayah is selling tickets for 200 baht to transfer you to your hostel/hotel. You will end up paying the same or more if you hop on a songthaew once on Koh Phangan, so it might be a good opportunity. I knew about this already, but I opted not to buy a transfer ticket. Once at the pier on Koh Phangan, the songthaew drivers actually asked for 250bh, but they reduced it to 200bh anyway.

I would never have done this before, but I decided to walk to my hostel even though it was a 50 min walk. Yes, it was far, but I’m carrying a light backpack, and I know the street is flat. Besides, the path looked doable through the beach, so walking 50 min on the beach didn’t look like a bad idea. Also, I arrived quite late. It was past 5.30 pm, so the heat wasn’t an issue, and I could see the sunset at the beach, perhaps… but it was too cloudy to see the sunset, so it just ended up being a nice walk at the beach. Even though I thought I could walk along the beach until very close to the hostel, I couldn’t. At some point, some rocks don’t allow me to keep going, so the last 20 min of the walk were along the busy street, which I don’t especially enjoy, but anyway, 20 min was not that much. I reached the hostel exhausted, haha, but I hadn’t done much that day, so it was fine. I ended up at Koh Phangan Arena or Leo hostel, a party hostel, but as it isn’t full moon party days, I thought it would be quite empty. I was wrong.

The hostel is cheap, and there is a beach very near, and that’s why I chose it, not because of the party scene, which I’m actually not into. But, there are always parties going on Koh Phangan, and the place gets really loud. The day after, it was much quieter. Anyway, too loud, I wouldn’t stay there again. One of the nights they had loud music until 2 am!! I thought it was illegal, but it happened. If you are bothered by noise, this is not your spot. But, even though it was a party hostel, I found a quiet area by the football field. It was nice over there.

2. Singapore: Futuristic, Green, and Multicultural 

Another country that has become a quick getaway for Indians is Singapore. Located in Southeast Asia, Singapore is both a country and a city. Spread around an area of 287 square miles, Singapore is the perfect place to explore in a short period of time. 

Best Time to Visit: February to April 

What to Do in 5 Days: 

• Your Singapore tour begins at the airport itself. The Changi Airport is one of the best airports in the world and has some of the most amazing attractions as well. The Canopy Park, the Rain Vortex indoor waterfall, and Shiseido Forest Valley are things you must see here. 

• Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic garden, must be a part of your itinerary. Spread around 101-hectare-area, the place has fantastic attractions like Supertree Grove, Floral Fantasy, Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway, and more. 

• Another modern attraction you must visit here is Marina Bay Sands. This is a luxury hotel with an observation deck, giving you the view of the bay area and massive infinity pool. There are plenty of attractions near the hotel, including a museum and light-water show. 

• A must-visit place is Merlion Park, where resides the national symbol of Singapore, the Merlion statue. The statue of this mythical creature, which is half lion and half fish, stands at the height of 8.6 meters and weighs 70-tonne. The water-spouting statue looking over the Singapore Bay is a great backdrop for photos.

• To experience the different cultures of Singapore, visiting its cultural districts is essential. Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam are places you must visit to know about the Chinese, Indian, and Malay-Muslim communities of the country. 

• If you are interested in wildlife, Singapore offers Singapore Night Safari, Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, Mandai Wildlife Reserve, etc. 

Visa Information: Indians are eligible for Singapore e-visa. To get this visa, you need to submit the scanned copies of your valid passport, photographs, confirmed flight tickets, hotel booking, bank statements, etc. The Singapore visa from India is usually valid for 2 years, although you can stay only for 30 days at a time. Once applied, you will get the visa in 1-3 business days. 

3. Indonesia

The island country of Indonesia is another favorite among Indians looking for a short holiday. In fact, Indians are the second-largest tourist population in Indonesia. Home to more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a tropical paradise known for its breathtaking natural beauty, interesting wildlife, cultural sites, and adventurous activities.

What to Do in 5 Days: 

• Amidst the thousands of islands in Indonesia, Bali stands out the most and is also the most visited island in the country. Next, I had to really walk all the way down, easier at least, and my destination was another of the best Koh Tao viewpoints:  Sun Suwan 360 view and bar.

Last time I visited the island in 2018, this Koh Tao viewpoints didn’t exist, so I made sure to visit it this time in 2025. The entry fee was 50 bhat, and you could use it to get a free drink at the bar, like water, for example. WOW, totally worth 50 BH. Stunning! I live for this type of view. So many shades of blue that my jaw drops to the floor. I could stare at this for hours!!! The view is very similar to John Suwan viewpoint, but it is still worth it as it is different. Loved it!!

I asked the ticket lady if I could go back later with the same ticket, and she said yes, as long as I let her take a picture of me with my ticket, haha. OK, I was back for sunset.

John Suwan viewpoint

But, before sunset, I went to John Suwan viewpoint once more in my life. STUNNING. It didn’t cease to impress me just because I had seen it before, and it was so long ago, though. Plus, I could look at this view every day, and I wouldn’t get tired of it! The viewpoint access is through some rocks, and you have some ropes to support the journey up. It is not the easiest access, but it is quick and not that bad. From all Koh Tao viewpoints, I don’t know if this is not the best one, or Sun Suwan.

From here, I went to a little tiny beach with no name but so pretty as it was tucked between the mountain with lots of coconut trees. So pretty! And the green shade of the water due to some algae maybe… very dirty tho, not clear at all and smelly haha, but was looking so beautiful though haaa. A charm, but not the place to go for a swim.

I went to Freedom Beach too, only to find it absolutely packed. Nop. No way I was staying there, so I moved on to the next one along the shore called Taa Toh Lagoon Beach.

Way quieter! And pretty too. To mention that to access this area, I had to pay 50BH. With this ticket, you can access the viewpoint, Freedom Beach, and Taa Toh Lagoon Beach, too.

Then I ended my day at Sun Suwan Viewpoint to watch the sunset, and I think this is a great sunset spot. The view is beautiful, and the sun sets right in front of my eyes. It was not as crowded as Secret bar and I easily found a good spot to sit and have a coconut. Beautiful Koh Tao viewpoints for a sunset view from here.

On another day, I decided to walk to some spots not so far from Chalok beach, but walking there was not as easy as the previous day. The streets get pretty steep in Koh Tao, and to reach the spots I visited on this day, I had to walk across many steep hills, in fact, a lot of them. No gym needed after this.

Anyway, I searched on the map for some beaches nearby that could be worth a visit, and I decided that my first stop would be Ao Leuk.

This beach looked absolutely stunning in the pictures I have seen, that’s why I decided to walk there. It was the furthest point I walked to on this day. From Chalok beach to Ao Leuk it is about 2,5km, which isn’t that much and a 45min walk. Very reasonable, only the extremely steep hills make it challenging. Therefore, walking there was pretty tiring, but still very doable, even though I saw no one walking along the street. Anyway, to get to the beach itself, you have to pay 50bh. I wouldn’t mind doing it if I were planning to stay there for a day, but this was just a pit stop on my day walks, so I didn’t pay to access the sand. Plus, this beach was disappointing haaa. It looked stunning in the pictures, but what I saw didn’t amaze me. I think the weather didn’t help, and the high tide neither. Looking at pictures of it, it seems like the colors get better at low tide, and this beach might be way more beautiful from above. It was also very windy, and the sea looked rough, so not a pleasant place for the day. But anyway, it was too cloudy to see the true beauty of the spot, I believe. I’ve also read that this is a very good snorkeling spot, but no way I would go in the water in such rough seas. Felt like the tiring walk was not that worth it for me… The beach was full of beach umbrellas and beach chairs, and I’m assuming that, as you pay a ticket to enter, you might have access to those.

Anyway, after a few minutes at Ao Leuk, it was time to walk to another beach not that far, but I had to walk back up the steep hills to find a street to access it.

Haad Sai Daeng Beach

It was quite a walk to reach this beach from Ao Leuk, more steep hills but very quiet streets filled with nature’s sounds and coconut trees, so I enjoyed walking along despite the hilly ground. I came across an area filled with coconut trees, so beautiful! And another of Koh Tao viewpoints before reaching the beach itself.

This beach doesn’t amaze me that much either, and again, the weather has its part here. Islands without the sun will never show their true colors. This was a pretty quiet beach, nice colors anyway, but I also didn’t stop for long. After admiring it, I moved on to the next beach on the map and the one where I stayed for the day. This was the beach I could see from John Suwan viewpoint, so I knew it was beautiful.

Haad Tien beach

To walk from Sai Daeng to Tien beach, I followed Maps.me app; otherwise, on Google Maps, the route would be twice the length. On Maps.me, this beach is Ao Thian, and it isn’t that far. I went all the way through a path that leads to a pagoda and then followed to Tien Beach Resort. This beach seems to be “occupied” by the resort, and you can access it through it, but have to pay for it. But, there is also another way into the beach, but you will have to walk on waist-level water to get to the sand through a restaurant called “Rocky Kitchen Restaurant” and that’s how I got to the beach. I ended up eating at this restaurant. I was expecting very high prices, but it wasn’t that bad for the view. It feels like Koh Tao viewpoints are everywhere around the island.

I saw some people giving up going to the beach after realizing that they would have to walk in the water to get there, even though for a few meters and 1 or 2 minutes in the water. It wasn’t hard. Just had to place my stuff in a dry area before walking, and it was quite easy.

The beach isn’t busy at all. It is lined with these cute trees that are basically branches, and I love to look at them. They give a certain charm to the place. The water looks beautiful even under the clouds. The trees provided lots of shady spots, and this was a great spot to spend the day. The water had lots of seaweed and leaves floating, and wasn’t the warmest ever, but still enjoyable. I liked it! Pretty quiet.

Then I had to walk all the way to Chalok, and it was again through hilly grounds. I ended the day tired but with a feeling that it was a good day exploring my own way and pace. Koh Tao isn’t a very big island, but it isn’t possible to see all of it without a motorbike. Because this time I explored Koh Tao on foot, I didn’t see much more, so I will have to go back again to explore even more, haha. But I still got to see the best Koh Tao viewpoints, and that makes me happy.

This island is beautiful and very worth it, even if it might be one of the most expensive islands in Thailand. I mean, some of Koh Tao viewpoints are the best I have seen. The next day was the time to go to Koh Phangan, my 3rd time on this island.

Book your ferry ticket to Koh Tao HERE!

I went to Koh Tao during high season, which was not very good as I struggled to find cheap options for where to sleep last minute. It felt like all the hostels were fully booked. I was left with the cheapest one on the island, which is not the usual Thai cheap. It was more than 10€ a night for a bad hostel. With that money, I could afford something much better somewhere else. But Koh Tao is not a cheap island. It is, in fact, one of the most expensive Thai islands I have visited, indeed. Maybe because it really felt like this island lives for tourism and nothing else. The boat to get there was absolutely packed with Western people, and I definitely saw more foreigners than locals on the island.

Koh Tao is known for diving, and lots of people go there to undertake a diving course. That’s what most part of tourists in Koh Tao do. They take a diving course. This is supposed to be one of the cheapest places in the world to take a diving course, I think. It was not my case. I came to see the beauty the island has to offer. I have been in Koh Tao before, and I didn’t see much because I ended up having a motorbike incident where I twisted my ankle and got traumatised by motorbikes, haha. Koh Tao is not the place for you to learn how to ride a motorbike for the 1st time in your life. The island has so many steep streets. Like, crazy steep. Scary to look at, and many people have motorbike accidents here, so be careful.

Walking around Koh Tao

This time I didn’t rent a motorbike, not because I was scared of riding it, because now I have way more experience, but because I saw several walkable places to visit in the area where I decided to stay. I spent my days walking. I didn’t see all around the island, but instead I saw a lot of what the area around Chalok and the John Suwan viewpoint has to offer. I think I explored it all very well.

So, on the first walking day, I decided to go from Chalok to the pier, walking next to the ocean. On maps.me, there is a path marked along the shore, and I decided to try to follow it. Clearly, no one is walking here. But there are several easy access points by motorbike to the beaches I came across during this walk. It was such a beautiful walk, though.

I walked from Carabao Dive Resort to Jansom Bay. It took me a couple of hours to do it, but not because of the distance between the places. It isn’t such a long walk, actually, but I stopped very often as I came across many beautiful views.

You won’t find the walking path on Google Maps. You need to use the app Maps.me to see the walking trails. It is possible to follow the ocean and reach Jansom Bay on foot.

I came across several beaches, resorts, and restaurants, and I was actually surprised to realise that each one of those beaches had a resort. I found no empty beaches, which was surprising cause I thought this area would not be so explored. I also came across some abandoned bungalows with furniture and all inside. Maybe there are too many options in here,… I don’t know.

I came across Cape Ja Te Kang, Sai Nuan Beach, and many others whose names I don’t know.

Sai Nuan Beach

Sai Nuan Beach deserves to be a standout because of its beauty. It was definitely the most beautiful one I saw along this walking route on Koh Tao. The water is stunning, and the beach is not crowded.

Jansom Bay

Near Jansom Bay are some abandoned huts with a great sea view, and in that spot I saw a diving boat and people diving. Not sure if they were just practising or if that is actually a good diving spot. Might be worth a try.

Jansom Bay is beautiful, and not many people come here. Apparently, if you come by motorbike, you will have to pay an entry fee, but as I arrived unconventionally, I didn’t pay anything. I know it because I met a friend who went by motorbike, and he said he had to pay.

This beach had a cute guest, a goat. Once I arrived, I saw some girls scared of something, and then I noticed a goat, haha. The goat was roaming around freely, and I made friends with her. She liked some cuddles. The beach has clear waters, and all the bungalows are abandoned. It is a quiet spot, though, and the water was stunning! So clear! Lovely and surrounded by coconut trees. This island has so many coconut trees! Wow. Love them!!

Sairee Beach

From here I didn’t walk anymore because I met a friend and we went on his motorbike to Sairee beach. Sairee Beach is very wide and so crowded! It feels like everyone is there. It is beautiful indeed, but I would rather go somewhere less crowded. We ended up at a viewpoint to watch the sunset, but it was absolutely packed!! It is called Secret Bar, but it is obviously not secret. We couldn’t find a seat, so we moved somewhere else for the sunset. If you want to go to this spot, I think you should go a while before sunset to guarantee a spot.

Deishaview viewpoint

We ended up at Deishaview viewpoint, which looked stunning even though it is not in the sun’s direction for a perfect sunset. The view from here was so beautiful. I sighed a few wow’s, and I made sure to go back during the day to see the beautiful shades of blue the sun could reveal. It was still a pleasant place to enjoy the end of the day. The next morning, I made sure to visit it again, haha.

Do I need a visa for Brazil? 

That’s when the relaxed planning energy shifted. As a US passport holder, I needed a Brazil eVisa before traveling. Suddenly, I wasn’t researching restaurants. I was researching Brazil eVisa requirements, processing times, and how to apply for a Brazil eVisa online without making a mistake. 

If you’re here, you’re probably doing the same thing. Comparing the official government website with services like iVisa. Wondering: Is iVisa legit for Brazil? Or should I just apply directly? 

Here’s what happened when I applied for my Brazil eVisa, and why I ultimately chose to use iVisa’s seamless process. 

My first attempt to apply on the official Brazil visa website 

Naturally, I started with the official route. It’s the lowest-cost option since you only pay the government fee. 

At first, it looked straightforward. Then I had to create an account, retrieve a one-time password to log back in, and be careful not to lose progress if I left the page. When I stepped away to double-check my passport details, I had to start from scratch. 

To be fair, Brazil’s electronic visa system is still relatively new. The country only reintroduced visa requirements for travelers from several countries in April 2025, replacing a visa-free policy that had been in place since 2019. The new process is entirely digital, which is convenient in theory, but as with any newly launched government platforms, the application portal is still evolving and can feel a bit clunky at times. 

It wasn’t impossible. It just felt easy to make a mistake. 

With multiple extra tabs open to confirm photo specifications and document guidelines, after about 20 minutes, I caught myself thinking, “There has to be a simpler way to do this.” 

That was the moment I caved and went back to my original search tab, then clicked on iVisa. 

How did I check if iVisa was legit for the Brazil eVisa? 

I’ll be honest, my first reaction was skepticism. There are plenty of visa scams out there. Some copy official government layouts almost perfectly, while others make bold promises that feel unrealistic. So before I even thought about using iVisa for my Brazil eVisa, I did a little digital digging.

So next time, I’ll skip battling the government site and go straight to iVisa. I would also apply earlier because even though my Brazil eVisa was processed within the expected timeframe, starting sooner would have removed that quiet background stress.

This was actually not the 1st time I have done this trip, but it turned out to be a bit different from the first time and better too.

From Bangkok to Chumphon Pier

The bus left Bangkok near Khao San Road at 7 pm. I thought we would be going to a major bus station to change buses at some point, but that didn’t happen. It was a direct journey from the heart of Bangkok to Chumphon, the nearest pier where the boats to Koh Tao depart.

The bus is a normal bus with a toilet inside, which was awesome because we only did one stop for 30 minutes the whole trip. It was enough because, as the trip is done at night, everyone is sleeping. But the time when I was able to sleep on such a bus is long gone, haha. I’m used to Vietnamese buses, which have actual beds 80% reclinable and where it is very possible to sleep comfortably. This is not the case. It is a normal bus, so seating and sleeping proved to be too much for me. I was a mess when we arrived at 3 am at Chumphon pier. One of the reasons why I thought we would stop somewhere else along the way was the arrival time: 3 am, but the boat is at 7 am!!! WHY!?
The bus also stopped in Hua Hin to get some more passengers. There were only foreigners on board this bus, which is something I’m not very used to for a while. Only in Thailand, really.

Later, I understood that there was another bus leaving from Bangkok at 9 pm, which arrives in Chumpon at 5 am, which leads to a shorter waiting time for the boat to Koh Tao.

Anyway, at least at 3 am, we had the spot absolutely empty and could actually sleep in one of the beach chairs way more comfortably than on the bus. So maybe after all, sleeping here was better than trying to sleep on the bus. We could sleep to the sound of the waves right in front, but peace ended once the passengers from the 9 pm bus arrived. They arrived at 5 am, and I couldn’t sleep anymore. Most of the passengers came on that bus, actually.

Once some light revealed the surroundings, it was great. There are some beautiful beaches near Chumphon pier. I could see lines of coconut trees and a very peaceful beach. This spot was actually very beautiful, and a misty sunrise awaited us. It was shy at the beginning, but the sun showed up gracefully.

We had to swap our ticket for a new one before boarding, and that was it.

From Chumphon pier to Koh Tao

On the boat, luckily, there was a sitting area outside, which I prefer. I prefer the wind on my face, even though the trip was calm and not disturbing at all. We arrived in Koh Tao at 9 am, but before we had a pit stop at Koh Nang Yuan, the famous viewpoint island with stunning shades of blue. WOW was really nice to see it from the boat. The water colors were stunning!!! I didn’t visit this viewpoint once more, haha, even though I really wanted to, but that was because I thought I would go to Koh Tao again soon.

9 am is a little too early to arrive at any island because the check-in time is at 2 pm, but the people from the hostel are always nice and allow me to leave my stuff at the reception. Like this, I could enjoy my time at the beach with no worries. My hostel was a 30-minute walk away from the pier, and I thought of walking there, but a guy offered me a ride. Many people rent motorbikes near the pier, and once they leave Koh Tao island, they can also ride it to the pier, which is easier. I ended up not renting a motorbike at all during my stay on Koh Tao island. This was my second time on the island, though.

The catamaran then proceeded to Koh Phangan, absolutely full of foreigners. 98% of the people on board these ferries to the Thai islands are foreigners.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

Waking up at 2 AM might not sound like vacation goals, but trust me, climbing Mount Batur in the dark with only a flashlight and your questionable coordination is an experience you’ll brag about forever. The trek itself takes about two hours, and just when you’re ready to curse your life choices, the sun rises over the mountains and Lake Batur. Suddenly, it all feels like the best idea you’ve ever had (happened to me, lol).

You can book private Bali tours for this trek. Your guide will usually bring you a simple breakfast along the way. Nothing fancy, just boiled eggs cooked by the volcano’s steam (uh, volcano-cooked eggs are a thing). Wear decent shoes, bring a jacket, and maybe some coffee candy for energy. The trail is popular, so don’t expect a private hike, but honestly, that’s comforting if you’re a bit scared of the dark. Everyone’s out there together, huffing and puffing, waiting for that golden view.

Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Fire Dance

Perched dramatically on a cliff 70 meters above the sea, Uluwatu Temple is one of Bali’s key cultural landmarks. If you go around sunset, you’ll get the full cinematic experience. The temple itself is stunning, but the real magic begins when the Kecak Fire Dance starts. Dozens of men chant in rhythm while dancers act out scenes from the Ramayana. It’s like an outdoor theater, but with a way much better backdrop than Broadway.

My personal advice: Arrive early to grab a good seat for the performance, and keep an eye on your belongings because Uluwatu’s monkeys are professional pickpockets (No, I’m not joking). A sarong is required to enter the temple, but don’t worry, they provide them at the gate. If you want to see Uluwatu’s cliffs from a different view, some operators even offer Bali helicopter tours nearby — definitely not your everyday temple visit. This is also one of the most popular stops for cultural tours Bali has to offer!

Ubud Rice Terraces & Swing

I bet you’ve seen this everywhere. In fact, Ubud rice terraces are probably the most Instagrammed spot in Bali. The rice terraces are green, wide, and beautiful to walk through. They are also a part of Bali’s traditional farming system called subak. Walking the small paths between the fields feels calm, and you’ll often see farmers at work.

If you want something more playful, try one of the big swings that send you flying over the terraces. I’m not a huge fan just because I’m scared of heights, but it’s nice for the photos, though! There are also small cafés nearby where you can sit with an iced coffee and enjoy the view. No wonder it’s listed among the best places to visit in Bali. Just expect a little mud on your shoes by the end.

Surfing in Canggu

Canggu is one of the best spots in Bali to learn surfing. While the pros head to Uluwatu or Padang Padang, Canggu is the spot where everyone (even beginners who can barely balance on a scooter) can give it a try. The waves are friendly for beginners, and there are plenty of surf schools ready to help.

Lessons usually start with some sand practice (aka flopping on the beach in front of strangers), but soon enough, you’ll be riding baby waves and looking pretty good. Even if you decide surfing isn’t for you, Canggu’s beaches are still a great hangout for sunsets, beach bars, and people-watching. You can even add Bali boat tours to your day if you want more time out on the water. Maybe just stay longer for a sip of coconut water, a plate of nasi goreng, and a sunset.

Traditional Balinese Cooking Class

Joining a cooking class is a great way to learn more about Balinese culture. Most classes start with a visit to the local market, where the teacher shows you local spices, vegetables, and fresh herbs. Then you cook dishes like satay, spicy sambal, and Balinese curry together.

The best part is eating what you’ve made at the end. Even if your chopping skills are terrible, the food still tastes good. Lonely Beach

I found Lonely Beach to be very beautiful! I saw it under moody weather, and sunny, and the beach has some beautiful shades of blue. The water is so clear. I could see my whole body underwater with 100% visibility! Amazing! The beach isn’t that wide and not crowded either. There were some trees providing shade, and one or another resort right in front. To access this beach, I would walk to Beautiful Bar, and from there, there is a small path to access the sandy area. The bar itself is a great sunset spot. I really liked it here! I actually didn’t check any of the other popular beaches on the west side of Koh Chang, so I can’t really compare this one to the others.

But this post is focused on the trip I took by motorbike with some friends to the east side of the island, to the very southern end of Koh Chang Island. To get there, it took us around 1 h 20 by motorbike. We had to ride through all the dangerous twists and turns on Koh Chang Island, but we did well.
On our way to the south, we made sure to stop at Kae Bae viewpoint to check the views.

So pretty here. There is a privileged view of a nearby island with a solo beach that seems to be easily accessible by kayak. My friend went there by kayak. Sounds like a good program. He told me that renting a kayak to get to the small island was 400 bh a day or 200 bh per hour.

Ko Ngam Island

After this viewpoint, we headed to our destination, another kayak rental place that would allow us to visit Ko Ngam Beach, a cute little beach on an island right next to Koh Chang Island. Judging by the pictures I saw online, this place promised beauty, and I was super excited about it.

We headed to this place on the map marked as a Kayak rental, but it was empty over there. I mean, there were no people even though the kayaks were there. We needed to head to the resort next door to rent the kayaks. Surprisingly, none of the staff spoke English, but we managed to understand them. I was glad we ended up visiting the Kayak rental spot before because the views from there were GORGEOUS! I was so thrilled! So beautiful here. So many shades of green, the quietness, the calm sea, what a stunner.

From Tantawan Resort, where we rented the kayak, the views were also to die for! WOW. Seems like they only have Thai clients. Well, if someone decides to stay the night here, they are totally dependent on the resort services because there is nothing around this area. Here, we rented a Kayak for 200 bh a day. They didn’t have a 3-person kayak, so we rented 2 and split evenly. We found out that to park on Ko Ngam Beach, we would have to pay 200 bh each, which demoted us from doing it honestly. Sounds pricy just to be on that tiny beach, so our plan changed a little and instead of simply chilling at Ko Ngam beach, we kayaked all around that island and to an islet by.

We found a place with really clear waters around the island and some tiny beaches. We stopped in one of them only to be told to leave. A boat with locals came to meet us and tell us to leave the spot. Not sure why, but we did so. We were snorkeling there and my friend saw a stingray, how cool! I was terrified when I heard sting ray, haha I was stung by one once and wish it to none. Unbearable pain.

Anyway, we went all around Ko Ngam island and decided to stop for a break on an islet that is basically rocks. It offers great views of the beautiful surrounding area. What a beautiful place! We saw absolutely no boats around all the time we spent kayaking. We spent more than 3h kayaking around. We decided to go near the beach before delivering the kayaks, but we had no intentions of paying the fee, so we didn’t stay long, but still hopped off the kayak and went for a swim. So glad we decided to go to the beach itself, cause the views from it are absolutely stunning! WOW! We can see the mountain peak in Koh Chang Island, lush green forests, and the resort in the distance, which actually gives a certain charm to the landscape.

It all looked so idyllic. What a perfect view! There were some abandoned bungalows on Ko Ngam island, but we didn’t really walk around, so I can’t tell what else is there on Ko Ngam beach. We didn’t want to pay the 200 bh fee, basically, haha. Also, it was getting later, and we had a long way to go, and the rain was definitely coming for us. I had a great time kayaking around Ko Ngam, and it was my favorite part of Koh Chang Island. Definitely the most beautiful views I saw on the island. I don’t think there is a more beautiful place than this one on Koh Chang Island, honestly. Worth the long trip.

Mangrove forest

As we were so far, we decided to visit one more spot before heading back: the mangrove forest, even though we knew that would delay us and we wouldn’t escape the rain.

The mangrove forest area is not that big, so it can be seen easily in a short time. The place seemed kind of abandoned, as there was no ticket counter where it seemed to have been one before. Some of the wooden boards on the walking path are broken, and looking at the floor constantly is necessary. But it is not in that bad condition, very walkable, and very easy to do. The mangrove forest wasn’t that far from the resort where we rented our kayak, so it was easy to reach and not such a big turn before heading back to Lonely Beach.

The mangrove forest is always a nice walk. The trees have their beautiful roots, and some crabs can be easily seen. I have seen quite a few mangrove forests before, so I wasn’t impressed by this one. However, there was a part on this walk that I really liked more than the rest, a part of the path where we could see above the canopy, a view I have never had while walking in a mangrove forest. It was quite a sight as we could see the trees for a long distance. Everything around was green with some mountain peaks in the background. We were here when the sun was starting to go down, so it was nice to see this view. Very beautiful. The walk ends at sea. You’ll find the sea and a wide stretch of mangrove forest in sight. It also offers a pleasant view. You won’t take long to reach this very end, so you might as well just proceed to the end of the walk.
The storm was obviously approaching, so we kinda rushed a little to get back on the road because we knew we had a long ride home.

In fact, it rained all the time on our way back. I don’t recommend doing this at all. I wasn’t riding the motorbike, luckily, because I think I wouldn’t have been able to do so if needed. My glasses were so covered in raindrops that I couldn’t see anything in front of me, and I was on the back! It was a cold ride, too. We decided to make a pit stop near the pier to eat a hot noodle soup and wait to see if the rain would stop. It was miserable riding more than 1h in the rain…
At the restaurant where we stopped, the locals seemed to be so worried about us once we told them that we still had to ride until Lonely Beach. They kept repeating: “Go slow, very slow” with a worried face. We have received that advice previously: Don’t ride on the steep hills when it is raining. But we actually had no option.

The rain wouldn’t stop, and we had to make our way back for a needed hot shower. It was a dangerous ride, but we were extremely careful and slow, and it was sprinkling on the last 30 minutes of the ride. It was not as bad as the first hour.

On this same day, because it was raining, I paid for a taxi to Kae Bae beach at night to meet a friend. Not sure if because it was raining, it was pricier, but I paid 200 bh each way, from Lonely Beach. The worst steep curve on the island is actually between these two beaches, and for that reason, riding a motorbike at night on such a wet street didn’t sound like a good idea to me. Plus, I didn’t rent a motorbike for myself.
To find a taxi, I asked the hostel owner for help, and he gave me the right WhatsApp contact.

And this was all I had seen while in Koh Chang Island. For me, the kayaking experience was the best experience I had on Koh Chang, but I have done more things and seen more stunning places. You can read more about other things I saw on the island HERE!

There are some smaller islands nearby that might be worth a visit, such as Koh Kood or Koh Mak. I didn’t visit, but the tour agencies were selling day tours there, or boat tickets to get there, should be easy.
