PLP 2010-2011

For the 2010-2011 school year, IU12 was invited to send three district teams, representing elementary schools, to the IU13 Powerful Learning Practice (PLP) program by Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and Will Richardson. This intensive program began in September and culminated yesterday at IU13. I was lucky enough to be a PLP Fellow in the program, and had the opportunity to support Dover Area School District and Cocalico School District throughout the year. Through face-to-face interaction, Elluminate webinars, and a Professional Learning Community (PLC) through a ning, everyone received tons of job embedded professional development, and created many new partnerships.

Yesterday, was the celebration and the presentation of action plans from all of the districts involved. Here are IU12's district team action plans:

Middle School Computer Fair 2011
27 students from the IU12 region competed in five different categories this year for the regional middle school computer fair. During the judging of their projects, students participated in two learning sessions: Alice with Jaron Flickinger, Northeastern School District and Sumopaint with high school students from Central York School District. Judges were volunteers from area school districts (technology integrators/teachers) and the Lincoln Intermediate Unit (tech department). Winners were from four of the categories:

PETE&C 2011

Even though PETE&C was over a month ago, we are still sharing what we have learned. Yesterday at our TIEnet meeting, we spent a little bit of time sharing what we had presented or learned. PETE&C 2011

There was not enough time to share everything, so here is the information on my session, which was about the Admin Learning webinar series/wiki that began last year. The greatest part about doing the webinars is the creation of the wiki pages for various areas that can now be used with all of your administrators. In addition, I've used scavenger hunts with some administrative groups this year, and the pdf is available for your use too. There is no specific "presentation" page in the wiki, as I had participants do the online group aspect of the scavenger hunt, and then through their answers, I highlighted areas of the wiki, and shared the processes used to build that page or just simply shared a few of the resources accessible on a particular page.

Beyond the Rule of Three

As a classroom teacher, I attended regional and national conferences annually and a rule that I always tried to follow was what I called the "Rule of Three." Whether I attended a full-day workshop or a three-day conference, I made it a personal goal to share what I had learned with at least three people in the building or district, and then implement at least three new things in my classroom. As I offered professional development then, just as I do now, I almost always shared this rule with others, often encouraging them to at least try the rule of one!

Reflecting about my days at Educon 2.3 at the Science Leadership Academy over the weekend, I realized how much this has changed over the years due to web 2.0 tools and a varied approach to a conference. As a participant, there were so many ways that I shared beyond my "Rule of three:"

@mmkrill, @kditzler, and I took collaborative notes via Google Docs, which I shared via a discussion forum with one of my teammates (located in MN) in the JHU/ISTE program.
Despite this, I did post a few tweets and for those that pertained to administration and supervision, I used the hashtag #jhuiste for the rest of the JHU/ISTE students.
Other tweets were shared as well with the traditional #educon hashtag for all to follow, both those at Educon and those participating virtually.
Finally, the conversations at Educon were rich and thought-provoking, and my input was sometimes at a small group level, whole group level, or one-on-one. For several of the sessions that I attended, we collaboratively took group notes in a Google Doc or other format to document our ideas and conversations, and share with others.

Reviewing those four areas, it really isn't possible to accurately identify how many people I shared with, but it is definitely beyond the "Rule of Three!" This would not have been possible without an arena for sharing and collaboration, so I once again thank everyone at SLA and especially @chrislehmann for being such a gracious host.

In terms of implementation, I will still use the "Rule of Three" to begin, but hopefully will be able to go beyond this as well. As the notes indicated, there was much learning, but three take aways for now include:

Administrator strategies to support visual literacy (via The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush).
The use of the Expectancy Value Theory in terms of learner motivation (via @crafty184).
A Roadmap for Change (as an administrator - via @NMHS_Principal).

There is so much more to learn from everyone who was also sharing beyond the "Rule of Three," but this will take some time and more reflection!

New Media Opportunities

Asian Studies Videos
As part of the Asian Studies Collaborative from the Berks County Intermediate Unit, all PA school districts have free access to LEARN 360 video resources with a focus on Asian history, culture, and language arts. By clicking on this link, you can set up a registered user account by searching for your school district, choosing whether you're a student or a teacher, and then completing the required registration information. No email is required for student registration.

Defined STEM
Effective January 2011, PAIUnet districts will have access to an 18-month pilot of Defined STEM, which provides a suite of STEM-related curriculum, simulations, performance tasks, rubrics, and related assessments. The pilot will be in effect until June 2012, when districts will be able to continue with the service for a discounted rate. Districts will be provided with codes (in the near future) to access this service and this will be a PAIUnet exclusive application, meaning it will not be accessible off of the network.

This project is designed for 2nd and 3rd grade students studying York County geography and history. Through videoconferencing technology, your class will meet students in other classes while learning about different parts of York County! Prior to the videoconference each classroom will add information to their page on the York County wiki (http://yorkcountypa.wikispaces.com/) with clues about their city, town, and school district. The other classrooms, using maps, the Internet, textbooks, and other resources, will try to discover the location of each participating classroom. Each class will get a chance to guess, "Where in York County Are YOU?"

Educon 2.2

Last week at this time, I was deep into conversation at Educon 2.2 in Philadelphia. This was my first time at this event, but since my good friend, mmkrill always stated that this was the conference that changed things for her, I decided to make sure I made it this year. So, my schedule finally allowed for me to take this trip and it was well worth it. Unfortunately, my schedule did not allow for me to spend the first day at the Science Leadership Academy (SLA) to spend the day with the teachers, students, and administrators. So, I made it a goal of mine to try to connect with the students the following two days. Other goals of mine included connecting with others in my Professional Learning Network (PLN) and joining in on the conversations that are such an integral part of Educon.

As for my goal to connect with the students, I made sure that I attended the SLA Student experience conversation on Saturday. This session consisted of sophomores to seniors at SLA in a panel platform, and their teacher was there to expand upon things when necessary. The students shared how they came to SLA, what their experiences were like there, and what their futures held for them. I was quite impressed with what they had to share and how well they answered everyone's questions. In order to share their experience, I tweeted throughout the session, and even added a new member to my PLN, one of the seniors who plans to be an educator! Here are my top three pieces of advice the students shared for teachers:

1. Make sure you check to see what students already know.
2. Give students responsibility.
3. Teach more than your subject, teach your students.

My second goal was to connect, meet, and learn from some of my PLN face-to-face. There were many familiar twitter faces there, and I was lucky to talk to some of them, but definitely not all of them! I was very excited to see that Liz Davis and Lisa Thumann would be doing a conversation session, so I joined them for "Managing Filter Failure - Getting to the Good Stuff," especially since I experience information overload on a daily basis. As expected, this session was fantastic. Although Lisa was not a big fan of protocols, I enjoyed using the Ping Pong Protocol to solve the problem of filtering through the overwhelming inundation of information. It seems that I am a fan of protocols, as I reference the Consultancy Protocol in a previous post. We worked in small groups in this model and I had an excellent group of folks to work with and add to my PLN! My group included mathplourde, brooker1015 (pictured with me), and bknittle. After sharing within our small group, we shared with others via “speed dating” or “speed teching” or whatever Lisa and Liz decide to call this process of sharing. We were able to hear quickly what others were doing to filter through all of their information, and we all walked away with some new ideas. I shared mathplourde's use of social media in our group and he shared it whole group as well. He has an intense process, but it is worth a look!

Finally, in terms of joining in on the conversations at Educon, every session I attended involved conversation at some level and that is the whole point of Educon. During the “Teaching Big Ideas” session, we shared what we wanted for our own children to leave with when they graduated, as well as created a lesson based on a big idea. In Chris Lehmann's (SLA principal) “Leadership 2.0” session, we examined the concepts of inquiry, technology infusion, and communities of care. In “Youth Voices,” we shared our own experiences with social networks and then participated in the Youth Voices social network by connecting with one of the student writers. Lastly, in “UDL and the 21st Century Classroom,” facilitators and participants shared their viewpoints of UDL, co-teaching, and more.

This is just a glimpse into the many conversations that I had at Educon, so take in all of this and add a few more layers, and you’ll get an idea of what this conference is all about and how different it is from many of our traditional conferences. They will be discussing and reading the story "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." It is an amazing story that takes the students on an adventure of over 500 pages of words and illustrations. He does this as a read aloud and the students will be answering the questions on the blog on their own so they can communicate with other students of similar age.

The Standards Aligned System (SAS) Institute was over several weeks ago, but I’m finally recuperating after an intense week as facilitator, a hectic work schedule the week after, and then getting sick afterwards. Here are ten items I thought you should know about SAS and the Institute.

SAS is a process, not just a new portal.
The six elements: Clear Standards, Fair Assessments, Curriculum Framework, Instruction, Materials & Resources, and Interventions – all to increase student achievement.
All of the above elements supported in the context of resiliency – closing the gap between instructional and emotional relationships.

"Best Practices" Videos

I've been sharing the Inclusive "Best Practices Project" to several different groups in the past few weeks, so I thought I should share it here as well.

What is it? Collaboration of several IU's (9, 10, & 17), PaTTAN, and Lock Haven University to produce a video library (with accompanying professional development resources) of exemplary practices in inclusive instructional settings.

What's included? Videos (actual footage) from various grade/subject levels for topics, i.e. co-teaching, differentiated instruction, content literacy, data, and more. Professional development resources are available for many of the topics. These range from Power Points to teacher guides and handouts. Some of the resources are from workshops held at one of the above IU's, while the majority are linked to the Access Center of the U.S. Department of Education.

What's an example? Co-Teaching includes videos of teacher interviews and conferences, team teaching, and professional development. One example area under team teaching shows both teachers being actively involved in the delivery of instruction and assessment activities. There are 12 possible clips, but one of my favorites is the 6th grade mathematics class. In addition to the videos, there are professional development modules from the Access Center and a Power Point from a workshop at IU17.

Anything else? There is also information available for organized book studies around the topic of inclusive practices. The site provides an Annotated Bibliography of Inclusive Practice Books (with reviews), and information about getting started with a book study professional development experience.

As Discovery Education has provided much professional development for the new changes for this school year, I thought I'd share a few of the changes mentioned at the IU.

1. Videos can now be watched in Flash!
The view under the video clip has changed and it is quite easy to choose your streaming type and your download type. Click on one of those tabs, and you'll be able to choose Flash, QuickTime or Windows Media. If you do not see flash as an option, then your district will need to request that this option be activated and the best part is that it is free and quick! For the tech folks out there, these are not on our local servers.

2. Discovery items can be shared!
This tab is right next to the tabs for streaming and downloading. There are so many options available here: email, social bookmarking (Delicious, Diigo, etc.), social networking (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), as well as the URL. In order to open the shared item, you still need a valid username and password to view the media.

3. Grid search results!
When you do a general search, you will immediately notice the difference in the view of the results. You will see more information and when you "hover" over a result, you can learn even more about the video or asset. You will even get a ten second preview of the video!

4. New download icon!
Were students/teachers asking you what the download icon was because they had never been exposed to a 3.5" floppy disk? No worries now, as the icon has been updated to a film reel with a download arrow. Remember to right-click, "save target/link as" to download any of the videos.

5. Global Classroom Manager!
The much awaited student feature has arrived! Teachers can now create classes of students and assign videos, assignments, and more to the entire class or individual students. This new feature will require student usernames and passwords, so please work with your Discovery administrator for the best solution to adding those.

6. DE Admin rolled into Discovery Education streaming!
Discovery Education streaming Administrators no longer need to use the separate admin URL. When logged into Discovery, simply choose the "my DE" tab and click on "My Admin" to gain access to the admin dashboard, where you can download passcodes, find/shuffle users, import teachers/students, create reports, and more.
