Hundreds of Chinese women have left their children behind in the hope of finding work in Paris, only to end up turning to street prostitution, a humanitarian group has said .A report by Medecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) said the women, mostly in their forties and sharing small rooms, are often victims of rape and violence, and are highly exposed to sexually-transmitted disease.The group runs a mobile clinic in immigrant districts in the French capital to reach out to the 500 women, many of whom are from China’s northeastern Dongbei region which has been hard-hit by unemployment.Their situation is alarming, said Melanie Quetier, who works at the clinic known as the Lotus bus which opened in 2002.“They have neglected their health for a long time and many discover too late that they are suffering from diabetes, cancer or heart trouble,” she said.Women go to the agency’s Lotus Bus for condoms but the Chinese-speaking staff tries to convince them to go for testing for sexually-transmitted diseases or consult a gynecologist.A survey of 93 women by the Lotus Bus team found that many had paid between 7,000 and 15,000 euros (9,000 to 19,000 dollars) to travel to France after losing their jobs in China.More than 65 percent of them are over forty and 90 percent said they had left at least one child in China.“These vulnerable women who do not speak French come up against non-Chinese customers who think they can do anything to them,” said Quetier.The Chinese women are considered “cheap prostitutes”, charging as little as five euros for sex, she said.

More than a third of the women questioned said they had been treated for a sexually-transmitted disease and 45 percent said they had not been tested for HIV, according to the report.

Most of them don’t dare come here,” said Nadia, a 22-year-old from Oslo who has been a sex worker for eight years.On a recent nighttime visit to the centre of the Norwegian capital, only three prostitutes walked the snowy streets, in an area where there previously would have been women at every corner.“Before, you would work until you made 4000-5000 kroner (600 to 750 dollars). Now you have to work all night and you earn only about 1000-1500 kroner,” Nadia told AFP as police patrols cruise by every few minutes.Nadia, who like her colleagues did not want to give her last name, said one of her clients was caught after the law came into force.“It was embarrassing because we were busy when the police came.“I told the guy he should say I was feeling unwell and that he was driving me home. "You're dealing with people who are intoxicated or doing drugs and you have to know you're more susceptible to getting hurt than if you were leaving your job at a bank." Most dancers understand the risks, but the money is good, the limelight is exciting, and some performers find the hours better than a job at a bank. said exotic dancing allows her to spend four out of seven days a week as a stay-at-home mom and afford to give her daughter a comfortable lifestyle. Witnesses and investigators said the two frequented the bar, and Theriault-Odom may have recently been turned down for a job there. No motive has been established for the attack. Brazil, 36, said that when she heard about the attack on Busby, she decided to skip work for the day. "I thought about her kids ... it made me want to stay with my daughter and let the craziness pass," she said. Jenna Presley, a 21-year-old stripper and adult film actress who performs in the Valley, said she, too, was shocked by the attack. Presley said she didn't understand how the dancer was allowed outside the club with patrons, even at a place like Babes N' Beer, which had a reputation as a "hole in the wall" joint. Presley, who has worked at the Spearmint Rhino and Deja Vu in the Valley, said responsible club owners and managers don't let performers leave with clients and will usually escort dancers to their cars and watch until they drive off. Giovani Del Cid, who runs a pair of nude clubs, called the Tarzana attack a "sad event" that could reflect badly on all adult entertainment - but shouldn't. "If you listen to how it (the attack) went down, it was very specific to that person," said Del Cid, district manager for the Valley Ball in Van Nuys and Bare Elegance in Inglewood. "I think it was very much an isolated incident. "I think they should take precautions to protect dancers. As far as security goes, we have state (licensed) security guards." Del Cid said he and other club operators have been talking about pooling money to try to help Busby.

"It's like if one plane gets hijacked, the whole airline community comes together and says, `How can we prevent this from happening again?' Among the dancers themselves, drama is as common as mascara and hairspray, the performers said. Nasty rumors fly - and violence sometimes follows - as dancers vie for big tips and admirers. "One night everyone's getting along and the next night everyone's ready to kill each other," Brazil said. Alcohol and drugs heighten tension among some dancers, who may need the extra push to perform on stage. "Most girls need it to get the courage to go on stage ... to cover up their feelings of shame," said Jennifer, a 35-year-old dancer, who has performed in the Valley.
She said she regretted that her "underworld" was featured in the media in such a negative light. "It's an underworld because strip clubs are dark, they are not accepted by society and we're frowned upon," she said. "But there is a good side too, for girls who can stay true to themselves and can do business without selling their souls. There is an art to what these girls do," Jennifer said. Brazil agreed that there is a good side, but after 18 years in the business, she dreams of the day she quits for good. Brazil said she tried to quit before she had her daughter, but tough financial times dragged her back on stage. After a failed marriage, Brazil realized dancing would be the easiest way to support her child. In a business where the average dancer is in her early 20s or late teens, Brazil knows she doesn't have much time left on stage. "Before you know it you're 36 years old and you don't know how time flew by so quickly ... you don't know how life got by you so fast and you think, `What did I really do with my life?'." In planning for her future, Brazil has already received her real estate license and sold a few properties - although several of her sales have been to her dance club patrons. But dancing "still pays the bills," she said. After last week's attack on Busby, Brazil said thoughts of quitting played inside her head a little more frequently even though she knows leaving is not yet an option. But Brazil insisted that the terrible assault should be a wake-up call for all women - not just dancers. "I don't know what she did to make someone so angry, but this had nothing to do with the club," Brazil said.
"It could have happened to any woman. If you're a woman don't take getting home safely for granted."

It exists in all countries, and if some teenage girls are imprisoned in brothels until they die of AIDS, that is seen as tragic but inevitable."Women and girls as young as 12 and even younger - are sold and forced into prostitution and often work 14 hours a day, six days a week in a variety of places like strip joints, bars and brothels. In many ways traffickers feel it is better than selling drugs because the women can produce money repeatedly for a number of years, if they survive. Many of the enslaved are also used for labor. For instance, they are forced to sew, work in factories, on farms, perform janitorial services, become domestics and work the construction trade. It is a global problem. They are too profitable for the criminals to let go. Rebecca Clarren wrote an article in Ms. Magazine entitled, "Forced Sex and Labor Trafficking in the U.S. It was posted on August 15, 2007, Printed on October 27, 2008."Due in large part to the efforts of feminist groups, in 2000 Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), which created a special "T-visa" that enables victims of sex and labor trafficking to remain temporarily in the United States - if they agree to assist in the investigation or prosecution of their traffickers. After a customer makes his selection, a manager makes sure the client signs broadcast release forms, and then the intimate details are arranged with the partner for the evening. After donning a burgundy terry-cloth robe and slippers in a carpeted locker room, each client heads downstairs where the action takes place. Every move is recorded by more than 50 video cameras mounted everywhere from the toilets to the bed posts. Big Sister is the logical result of the reality TV craze, says Paul Levinson, chair of communications and media studies at Fordham University in New York. The brothel's name is a play on ``Big Brother,'' a TV show seen in 70 countries. The two aren't related. ``It does seem people like all extremes of reality TV,'' says Levinson, who wasn't aware of Big Sister. ``As media gets more advanced it gets more real. As much as high-definition has replaced black-and-white, this advancement has also been seen in terms of content.''
At Big Sister, about a dozen guests perform on camera each night, and the Web site gets 10,000 to 15,000 hits a day, Borowitz, 26, says. ``Big Sister could potentially be a monster,'' says Bob Rice, a San Diego-based co-owner of YNOT.com, which advises porn companies on how to use the Internet. ``I just think that their marketing isn't there yet. They're known in Amsterdam, perhaps, but not in the U.S.'' Big Sister is based in a renovated apartment building just outside the narrow, winding streets of Prague's Old Town. There are no laws against paid sex in the Czech Republic.
The club's Austrian owners, who also run a Prague bordello where sex costs about $150, spent 5 million euros to buy and fix up the Big Sister building. Borowitz says they've already recouped their money. Big Sister is owned by a Swiss-based company that doesn't identify its investors, Borowitz says, declining to release further details. Average wages in the Czech Republic are about 800 euros a month. The women declined to comment when approached by a reporter. He comes for the free sex, good beer and women who are ``polite and very friendly,'' Nick says, at a table with a view of a glass swimming pool where one guest bobs naked. Charlie Daniels remembers her first experience of working as a prostitute as clearly as if it were yesterday. "As he pulled up to the kerb, I could see it was a posh car. My friend opened the front door and sat up front, while I plonked myself in the back. She negotiated a price for a BJ and afterwards he turned to me and said he'd give me 10 for a grope. I was scared and I think he could see I was shaking like a shitting dog."She was just 17 then. But those tentative first steps on the streets of Sheffield led to almost 20 years in the vice business during which she "graduated" from street hooker to madam and eventually to high-class escort, charging 1,000 a night.Her story is an unusual one, but the circumstances that led her into prostitution are not. "I was brought up in care," she explains, in an open, friendly manner, "and had my first sexual experience when I was 12 or 13. I eventually ended up pregnant, living alone in council accommodation with not enough money to buy my baby's nappies. When my friend suggested we went on the street because the money was good I really didn't need any persuading." She ended up working a beat close to Sheffield maternity department, where her daughter had been born. "Make no mistake, the streets are nasty," she continues, in her straight-talking Yorkshire way. "I was mugged, raped and beaten. And that was just the clients. I was also assaulted by the other girls and their pimps. Still, the money was better than benefits, and you do get used to the money."
But it wasn't long before she realised what many street prostitutes understand there is a much safer and much more profitable way to sell sex.She got off the street and began working in one of the thousands of sauna parlours that operate behind the tightly drawn net curtains of suburban Britain. Exuding a no-nonsense self-confidence that belies her occasional moments of self-doubt and self-pity, she says: "I remember thinking it doesn't have to be like this. So I went for an interview at a sauna parlour and was given a job straight away. The clientele were businessmen and professional people. But behind the scenes there were organised crime gangs who were using it for their drugs and guns operations."In the 1990s, Charlie decided to break out on her own and run her own brothel, a decision which brought her to the attention of the police and the pimps. She had a number of altercations with both, but it was a vicious fight with one of the girls that brought matters to a crisis. Charlie stabbed her in the eye, which landed her a two-year jail term.Now 38 and speaking with the trademark sexy huskiness of the madam, she says of her time in jail: "This was an important moment for me, because I discovered that I could do other things and that in fact I had more to offer in my head than I had to offer between my legs." After prison, Charlie Daniels went on to write a best-selling book called Priceless: My Journey Through a Life of Vice. She is now a motivational speaker, devoting herself to helping people turn their lives around through her life reclamation work. The redemption of Charlie Daniels is the kind of positive story that the government would like to replicate across the country. Her experience is strong evidence that public intervention can help women to escape a life of prostitution. But how positive is the broader picture?
Some Labour ministers, notably Harriet Harman and Vera Baird, the Solicitor General, would like to go even further and impose a zero tolerance policy to prostitution by making purchasing sex a criminal offence. Later this year, the Home Office will publish the conclusions of its long-awaited review on tackling the burgeoning sex industry.But despite pressure from Harman & Co, Vernon Coaker, the minister in charge of the review, is extremely unlikely to follow it through with a new law outlawing the trade in sex. The sad truth is that prostitution is a booming business in Britain and there is precious little the government can do about it. Even by its own figures it is estimated that 80,000 prostitutes are earning as much as 770m a year.In the face of a credit crunch and creeping inflation, men are still managing to find spare cash to pay for sexual pleasure. This month, a report by the government-funded Poppy Project found that prostitutes were now offering inflation-busting prices for full sex at 15 a session.
Teela Sanders, an expert on the sociology of crime and author of Sex Work: a Risky Business, says that the true number of sex workers could easily be two or three times the government estimate. "The sex industry tends to work behind closed doors these days. What we see on the street is only the tip of the iceberg," she says. "Government efforts to clear prostitution off the streets do not appear to be making much of an impression."Sanders suggests that it is the middle classes who are driving the current boom in sexual services. "It could be argued that the middle classes are monopolising the customer base of the sex industry as business entrepreneurs, property owners, conglomerates and legitimate multinationals form a lasting landmark on the high street to specifically target men with disposable income."She adds: "Middle class venues squelch in fake elegance and expectations to attract regular high-paying customers who will treat saunas, brothels and lap-dancing clubs in the same way they would their favourite restaurant or local pub."
The kind of person she has in mind is probably someone like Ian, 48, a married insurance broker from Kent, who has been paying prostitutes for sex for six years. "I tend to go to brothels out of town and especially when I am on business trips abroad," he explains. "I'm usually pretty drunk by the time I get to the brothel and I'm past the point of caring how much it's going to cost. I'm not surprised if I shell out over 300 a go. The best ones I've been to are in the Baltic state capitals, especially Tallinn and Riga, but Spain is good and so is Moscow. I have full sex but sometimes I'm too pissed to perform I still don't mind paying what the girl quoted me."

In his grey suit and blue shirt, Ian looks and sounds like a typical City businessman. He is courteous but also strangely unembarrassed by his sexual exploits which suggests that such stories are often shared among his working peer group.

Speaking in direct, upbeat tones, sometimes in mock cockney to hide his middle class roots, he says he started to frequent sex parlours after graduating from lap dancing clubs in London. "I think I asked one of the girls if I could pay to have sex with her. She gave me a card and it got me thinking. I thought about escort girls but that seemed too cold and calculating. In the end I went out drinking in Manchester one night and was taken to a place by some local business clients I had been messing around with. I don't remember much about it, except that afterwards I was convinced she had given me the clap or something. I was so worried that I booked into 24-hour sex clinic. When the doctor finally saw me she gave me all the all clear and asked me if I was married. She said the symptoms I had were psychosomatic, brought on by a sense of guilt about what I had done. Apparently it's quite a common thing."

Ms Sanders says that as more and more middle class men are paying for sex, there is a contingent trend among the numbers of middle class women who regard selling their bodies as a justifiable means of generating high income. She cites the example of a Jewish university-educated girl, calling herself Belle de Jour, who found fame after using a blog diary to record her secret life as a high class escort. "Although women have always used the sex industry to support their educational endeavours," says Ms Sanders, "increasingly female students faced with mounting debts and university fees are opting to work in the sex markets."But perhaps the most significant change in prostitution in recent years has been the arrival of the internet, which has brought the sex industry off the street and into the home. Thousands of sites advertise escorts, sauna parlours, sex clubs and online brothels. Men who have been too scared to try these services before can now search out a prostitute or escort from the safety of their own computer terminal.
In the face of such a pervasive and organised (and unionised) sex industry, it is difficult to see how any government will be able to control or regulate prostitution properly. For every woman who is successfully led out of a life of vice, there are many more prepared to take her place.Yet it would be wrong to assume that all prostitutes are like Billie Piper in her screen portrayal of Belle de Jour or Julia Roberts in the film Pretty Woman. Street prostitutes lead very different lives from those of high-class escorts or sauna parlour workers. Few can be characterised as happy hookers. For example: 21-year-old Joanne Blair (her street name) says she has been selling her body for sex since she was 11. In her handbag she carries a large knife. "I tell every punter the same: I'll slash them if they get rough."
Wearing a tight pair of blue Adidas tracksuit bottoms and a close fitting red woollen jumper, Joanne looks skinny around the face. She says she uses the money for clothes and food. "I'm not on drugs. You can see, look, I haven't got any marks."
In the hierarchy of the street prostitute, the drug addicts are at the bottom of the heap. But pimps and traffickers know that getting girls hooked on hard drugs such as heroin is the best way of bonding them. The combination of addiction and financial dependency makes it easier to keep these women working in the sex industry against their will.
Despite being "clean" Joanne Blair takes no pride in her work. "I hate it every time I do it, but I keep thinking this will be the last time."
Recently she has found alternative employment in Burger King, and in a Liverpool strip club but she is now back on the the streets.
"I'm waiting to hear whether I've got this other job now working as a telesales girl." Without such hopes, the sex workers of Britain's oldest profession might die of despair.

The club is located in the middle of an industrial estate in Brisbane's inner-city. Earlier this year, the Brisbane City Council threatened to shut it down because the building was zoned inappropriately. But Mr and Mrs Horn lodged a re-zoning application."We did have objections from the moral right. But the tone of the objection was about suggesting that child molesters come here and that sort of thing, which is, I mean, who would ever know frankly," Mr Horn said. "I mean, I'm not going to say they don't. How do you know your co-workers aren't child molesters?"
Councillor Helen Abrahams says the majority of submissions in the planning application were in favour of the application and the building has been re-zoned as a nightclub, which she says is the most appropriate category the council had. She says council had to consider the application purely as a zoning decision.
"Council cannot consider the moral aspects of this application, and in fact the condition of development clearly states that this is only for the purpose of the building. It does not comment on the legality of whether a swingers' club is lawful under state legislation," Cr Abrahams said.As for state legislation, it is believed the Queensland Government has no regulations governing swingers' venues.
But others in the sex industry say swingers' clubs need to be regulated.The Queensland Adult Business Association (QABA), which is the representative body for brothels, says it is ironic that a swingers' club can operate freely, while the state's brothels are subject to the toughest regulations in the country.
"Patrons that go to those premises would like to feel safe when they enter and know that there are good business practices going, occurring on the venue and it's very disappointing that the government hasn't gone through with guidelines for sex on premises venues," QABA president Yvette Skinner said.But Mrs Horn says swinging is not just about sex and does not hurt anyone.

Hua Si, 43, of Risdens, Harlow, was found guilty at St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday of three charges of keeping a brothel used for prostitution. The jury had heard that one brothel in Bakers Court, Bishop's Stortford, had been owned by a policeman. There, punters were offered full sex for £60 and hand relief for £40.
When the officer found out he had them evicted, but they moved on to an address in Newtown Road, Bishop's Stortford, and finally to a flat at Barleycroft in Harlow, Essex. When that was raided in January last year pornography, lubricants, condoms and dressing up clothes were found.Three other defendants had admitted keeping a brothel. Christopher Moore, aged 55, of Horsley Road, Chingford, Essex, and 54-year-old Colin Woolgar of Millwards, Harlow, admitted two counts, and Wang Li, 41, of Beanatten, Saffron Walden, Essex, admitted three counts.Mr Shaw said: "Whatever your personal views they are irrelevant. If the law says something is illegal and you find that person guilty that is what matters."Miss Si assisted at each brothel and sent money earned at the brothels to China. She also placed newspaper adverts for personal services.Acting Det Sgt Richard Adams told the court that police, immigration and revenue and customs officers raided the flat in Barleycroft on 12 January last year.Det Sgt Adams said: "I noted there was a camera outside the front door. Inside there was pornographic material, items used for sex - lubricants and condoms - and items used for dressing up."One Chinese girl was learning English from a laptop. They found another, who did not speak English, wearing a white dressing gown hiding behind a bedroom door. They were both arrested on suspicion of being illegal immigrants.Woolgar, who was also in the flat, said he also worked at Stansted Airport and gave the officer a business card which bore the name: 'Lord Colin Woolgar'. He said he had gone there to carry out odd jobs. He said he was in the process of buying the flat from Christopher Moore.Miss Si was also arrested. She said she worked as a security officer at Stansted Airport and was visiting a friend.
She had no idea the flat was a brothel, she said. Giving evidence Miss Si said she thought the girls were only giving Chinese massage. She said: "In China, massage is normal and popular and that is all it is."She admitted to prosecutor Peter Shaw she had placed newspaper adverts for the Chinese massage, but denied they referred to sexual services.She said the money she sent back to China for her friends was not earned from prostitution, but from working in Chinese restaurants.Sentence was adjourned until October 1 when she will be sentenced with three co-defendants, who had earlier pleaded guilty. Si was granted bail by Judge Stephen Warner.

Xue Ren Wang was involved in the management of a brothel at 6 St Andrew’s Court on May 19 of this year, a court heard. Last month, Wang pleaded guilty to the offence.
The 47-year-old, who used to live at the address, pleaded not guilty to a charge of living off the earnings of prostitution between April 1 and May 19 this year at the same address and to a charge of knowingly permitting the house to be used for the purposes of habitual prostitution. These pleas were accepted by the Crown.
Xue Ren Wang was apprehended following a covert police operation.A police source said: “We received intelligence regarding the house in St Andrew’s Court and went in with a search warrant on May 19 to determine if it was a brothel.He added: “There is a big problem generally in Scotland with brothels and prostitution. Girls are coming over to countries like our own in the hope of a better life but instead they find themselves being forced to work in the sex industry. Often, their families back home are threatened.“This is a worldwide problem and we urge the public to remain vigilant.”At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, Sheriff Rae Small jailed Wang.
The sentence was backdated to May 20, the date when Wang was detained in custody.

Beverly Bondon, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of keeping a brothel for prostitution at Dobson Road in Langley Green, Crawley, and Manor Fields in Horsham.
Bondon, of Furnace Parade, spoke only to confirm her name and enter her pleas during a 10-minute plea and case management hearing at Lewes Crown Court yesterday (September 16).The court heard how the offences were committed between January, 2004 and March this year.Judge Charles Kemp adjourned sentencing until December 2 and released Bondon on bail until then.told her: "I'm not going to sentence you today because I feel it would be sensible so that the whole picture is known to the judge who conducts sentencing."Bondon also faces a confiscation hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act to determine the benefit of her criminal conduct.

Ravi Raja Kumar, 48, from Hull, and Chi Peng Iok, 45, of Liverpool, yesterday pleaded guilty at York Crown Court to conspiracy to manage brothels.One of them operated in Llandudno between October and November in 2006 before being shut down after raids.There were no other details yesterday about the brothel except that it was in Abbey Road.The pair were jailed for their part in the running of a series of brothels including some in Scarborough and York, Cleveland, Humberside, Bedfordshire and Cheshire, between May 2005 and December 2007.Iok will be deported at the end of her sentence.The court case followed an inquiry by North Yorkshire Police’s Organised Crime Unit, aided by other North Yorkshire Police Units, Humberside Police and Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) officers.Iok was arrested at premises in Nicholas Street, York, where another woman of Chinese origin was discovered whom police believe had been working as a prostitute.She had possibly been trafficked into the UK.Iok is believed to be a Chinese national and has no status within the UK.
In January another brothel operating in Llandudno on St Mary’s Road was shut down.
Three Chinese women were handed over to the BIA to be deported.

Gallagher followed him in his car and managed to find out where the priest lived. Over the next few months he appeared there at least once a week to get cash, and forced his way into the house when he was refused.On 2 September last year, Gallagher turned up at 7.30am and barged his way into the house. Employment lawyer John Hannan, who knew of the case, said a school could possibly take action even if it didn't have a policy either preventing teachers taking secondary jobs or ensuring they first seek approval from their board. "It's a case of whether the outside employment is regarded as incompatible with the role of a teacher in terms of role-modelling and in terms of any policies that the board of trustees might have in place."Another employment lawyer, Patrick Walsh, said the council could intervene if the school deemed the teacher's second job involved "conduct that brings discredit to the profession".Prostitutes Collective national coordinator Catherine Healy said there were several teachers who had second jobs as prostitutes.Frances Nelson, the president of the Education Institute, the union for 97 per cent of primary school teachers, said some teachers had secondary employment for various reasons, and it was up to individual schools as to whether they had to seek approval. Two dozen people facing charges in connection with prostitution on Barrie city streets showed up in court Monday. The charges against nine women and 12 men were laid last month after Barrie city police did an undercover sting called "Dear John." They were busted by undercover officers posing as either female prostitutes, or as clients. In court, the accused went up one by one before the judge and had their cases put over for a month to give them time to contact a lawyer or, in most cases, legal aid. The men, most of who are from other towns, ranged in ages and appearances. One man was dressed sharply in a suit and tie, his grey hair neatly swept back. He requested his next court date and briskly walked out of the courtroom with a newspaper tucked under his arm. Another, an older man, shuffled to the front of the court, dressed in track pants and a sweatshirt, received his next court date and slowly hobbled from the room. Most will receive a fine or probation for the charge of communication for the purpose. An older woman, her face gaunt with missing teeth, received her court date and left with her boyfriend. The women, who range in age from 23 to 50 years of age, are almost all addicted to drugs and were using prostitution to pay for their drug habit, police say.
