Trip to Melaka

(Back to attend to my blog after being busy for the past few weeks)

Around five weeks ago, I have been to Melaka. (photos on my Facebook)

It's been 8 years since I last went to Melaka. Things have definitely changed a lot. Last time, I only had the chance to go around Melaka Town. This time, I have got the chance to explore beyond Melaka town.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude and say thank you so much to Bear, Bear's mum and family...and also Aaron, Zi Jia, Shu Wen, Aeson, Yu Yan. Sorry for all the trouble.

I think being sick did affect me during the trip but I really did enjoy the short escape trip from Cyberjaya.

On Seeds of Hope

Many of you would realise that my blog have been full of posts regarding the Seeds of Hope exhibition.

Definitely, being involved in the exhibition has taught me a lot of things.

I think the most common response I got when I start to take visitors on their tour is: "Oh, it's a go green exhibition."

But, there is a sense of relief that I have narrated well when at the end of the exhibition they would announced proudly that they have been inspired by the exhibition. Most realised that the exhibition is just not about going green.

I think that is actually how the exhibition works through the formula of Learn, Reflect and Empower. At the end of the day, we hope that the visitors are empowered to really initiate action for change. That would clearly reflect on the message of the exhibition: 'The power of one"

I must also stress that it is the heart-to-heart dialogue between the narrators and the visitors that have made the passing of the key message to be possible.

I am also grateful to the Good Samaritans I have met throughout the series of the exhibition I have been. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Those who are reading this, you would not be able to imagine how these people have really helped me.

The Seeds of Hope exhibition is now touring the country. So, do find out if it is near your place.

Touring Penang

For those who didn't know that I am back in Penang already, I am telling you now that I am back in Penang! It may be a little late for me to tell you now since I will be leaving Penang in 4 more days. But, as the saying goes: better late than never!

This semester break, the experience has been a little different. Overall, I had the pleasure of taking three different groups of friends to tour Penang. Firstly, it was housemates and university friends, the "4.30am Melaka people" and thirdly, SGM Educator Group members from Johor.

Perhaps, growing up in Penang makes some Penangites like me to take for granted the unique values of Penang. This time, it has been an eye opening experience for me to really look back and appreciate my hometown. Penang is the place where I was born and educated. It is here where I grow and Penang would be part and parcel that forms my personality. It is also here where I was well-fed with great food!

To describe how deep Penang is to my heart, I would rewrite this phrase that I have posted on Facebook before:

"While many people (especially politicians) are still thinking whether to declare themselves a Malaysian first or not, I shall declare this: I am a Penangite first.
And that does not make me less Malaysian nor less Chinese.

Leaving Malaysia

Recently, The Malaysian Insider has set up a few segments to allow its readers to write in on why they left or want to leave Malaysia. It is rather interesting to see the articles being posted. Here is the link:

These two sides of people would argue whether the grass outside Malaysia is greener or vice versa. However, there has been some common points raised by both parties:

The issue of social fairness, governance, discrimination , education, business and job opportunities have been the core of each and every writer's discussion. There should be something really wrong that these people has been talking about it. I may dedicate one post in this blog for these issues, soon.

THIS FLYER IS MEANT TO BE THROWN

Last month(which means I haven't updated my blog for a very long time), when I was walking in my university, a university mate came and passed me a flyer. I thought it was for an event, or maybe sale. Let me give some of the description on the flyer:

" DOTA Competition! All gamers are encouraged to join....Prizes up to RM500 up for grabs....Register before so and so..."

Okay...it's definitely not something that I will join. But wait, the most imortant past would be what was written at the bottom of the flyer.

"The event above is not real. THIS FLYER IS MEANT TO BE THROWN. It is meant for a survey purpose only"

When the world is trying to go green, there are some people are printing flyer for people to throw. And what type of survey is it when you pass the flyer to someone and that's it!

I did not confront them to know details of what it is all about since my exam was too near at that moment for me to look into that matter. But I could not find reasons to justify their action.

PS: As I have ACCIDENTALLY thrown the flyer away, all the above quotes from the flyer is from my own memory. I have tried to rewrite it again in the most accurate way possible.

"These sublime, noble peaks were just as I had imagined them. As my heart filled with awe and appreciation, I raised my camera and snapped the shutter six, maybe seven, times. These mountains seem alive - breathing. Behind these mountains exists a great life-force. Through these tremendous prayer towers, the life-force of the planet surges skyward and calls out to the heavens. The Himalayas stand as a monument to the Earth's unaging and undying activity."

These were the impression of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) President Ikeda as he recalled striving to take photographs of the Himalayas back in 1995. Photos of the Himalayas, along with other breath-taking shots is now on exhibit in the "Our Beautiful Earth" exhibition at the Ikeda Peace Exhibition Hall in the Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Mentor and Disciple Peace Hall. This hall is located on the 8th floor of Wisma Kebudayaan SGM (WKSGM). "Our Beautiful Earth" is the inaugural exhibition of the Ikeda Peace Exhibition Hall.

Those who have viewed the "Dialogue With Nature" exhibition at National Art Gallery in 2003 will be happy to see that some of the photos that they loved at that exhibition are now in the "Our Beautiful Earth" exhibition. They will also be thrilled to see other photographs that were not part of the "Dialogue With Nature" exhibition. For those who have yet to see "Dialogue With Nature", then they will be threated to an visual feast of breath-taking and meaningful shots.

"Every morning when I wake up I experience an exquisite joy —the joy of being Salvador Dalí — and I ask myself in rapture, 'What wonderful things this Salvador Dalí is going to accomplish today?'" — Salvador Dalí.

About the exhibition:

Dali had an ingenious creativity and innovative spirit which can be seen in his paintings, furniture designs, films, writings and sculptures. In 1968, Dali was fascinated with the special method and technique of glass making process called Pate de Verre which transforms elements from soft to hard and from opaque to transparent. This transformed Dali’s imagination into reality. He created his first crystal work entitled "Bouquet".

This exhibition features 25 of Dali’s crystal works including "The Melting Clock" and "Venus de Milo with Drawers". Each creation, executed based on the subjects in his own works, was then softened, distended and underwent transmutation, becoming a dream-like artwork.

About the artist:

Painter, sculptor, furniture designer and writer - Salvador Dali is one of the greatest masters of the Surrealist movement of the 20th century。

Dali was born in Figueras, Spain in 1904. He became proficient in many styles of art while studying in Madrid and Barcelona. By the late 1920s he had developed his own style of painting for which he became famous. Dali was a member of a group of artists and writers known as the Paris Surrealists. The group studied the effects of the subconscious mind over logic. This topic had become an interest for Dali after he discovered Sigmund Freud's writing on subconscious imagery.

Dali was an artist of great talent and imagination. When painting, Dali would put himself into an hallucinatory state to bring about images from his subconscious mind. He often painted common place objects and portrayed them in a changed or deformed way.

Dali died January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure. This brought to the end the life of a most incredible artist and an extraordinary man. There may be much controversy surrounding Dali and his works these days but what can never be taken away from him was his extraordinary way in which he viewed the world and thanks to his art we get to see a bit of what was inside of Salvador Dali’s mind and just maybe our own.

Seeds of Hope Exhibition info:
The “Seeds of Hope” exhibition was created by SGI in partnership with the Earth Charter International as a resource for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-14). The “Learn, Reflect, Empower” formula used in this exhibition was introduced by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda in a proposal on education for sustainable development for the World Summ...it on Sustainable Development in 2002.

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a socially engaged network which promotes peace, culture and education, with over 12 million members around the world.

The Earth Charter is a declaration of values and principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society. It was launched in 2000 and has now been endorsed by UNESCO, several national and local governments, numerous conservation organizations, faith groups, businesses and individuals.

This marks the second time of the display of the exhibition in MMU Cyberjaya. Seeds of Hope exhibition was first displayed in MMU in December 2010.

About the exhibition:
"Seeds of Hope" exhibition stresses our interconnectedness with the rest of the community of life and the need to broaden our sphere of compassion and concern. It encourages viewers to overcome feelings of powerlessness and highlights the fact that a single individual can initiate positive change.

It also introduces the positive vision for sustainable living expressed in the Earth Charter, and gives examples of eight individuals and groups who have successfully taken action for change, from Africa to the Arctic and Eastern Europe.

The message "It starts with one," is key -- the slogan that the Earth Charter International has chosen for their "Earth Charter + 10" campaign in 2010.

The "Seeds of Hope" exhibition contains 24 panels, including one left blank with a simple tree design so viewers can attach their own statement of what they will do toward sustainability.

The exhibition uses the "Learn, Reflect, Empower" formula outlined in SGI President Daisaku Ikeda’s 2002 proposal on education for sustainable development and as a tool for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

Peace Exhibition

SGM Penang High School Division and Student Division will be organising a "Peace Exhibition" from 4 - 12 September 2010. The exhibition will exhibit SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's Peace Proposal to the United Nations since 1983. The main focus of the exhibition will be on the 2010 Peace Proposal - "Towards A New Era of Value Creation".

June 10 was blog's birthday!

I remembered but due to some reasons, I have waited for some time before I would wish my own blog.

And here I would also like to reply to Janice's post in her blog, talking about me.
So, let me dedicate part of this post to her....
Firstly, thanks a lot for what you have mentioned. Hope I will hear more, if I ever leave.
It's been nice to meet you. There are many great moments. Oh, ya since I have just got demoted, I will try to get promoted again, haha. I didn't realise in what way have I added the depths and things you have said, but thanks for mentioning. There are also instances that I need to apologise.

I think that should be all, for now.

What if....

There are perhaps two instances when one will think too much...
1. when they are superbly free
2. when they are superbly busy

And I had both that moments right after A-Level exam...so I think I did think a lot (squared)

And there are so many what if questions....
such as ...
What if I was born a minute earlier?
What if I have never been to this school before?
What if I continues to do Form 6?
What if I had chose not to start this blog?

And the list goes on and on....

Perhaps the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost would best portray the situation

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,


And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

But isn't life full of choices? It is something that we could not deny.
Life is like a gamble, sometimes we are not only given two choices :big and small only
In fact, most of the time, life has 'generously' offered us a variety of choices.
And it is up to us to decide.



And I quote a saying that someone has offered me when I needed it the most:

"Now is the time, the person is you"

Lately, I have learned that maybe in this world there is no such thing as
"now" from the theory of now is non-existent.
This is because "now" will not be "now" anymore when we want to do it "now"
E.g. - I say that I would like to do etc. etc. now (9.00pm)
But, when I have said or even think of that it is not 9pm anymore, it may now be
9.00 3s for example.

So we should execute what we would like to do as fast as possible so that we would be
as near to 'now' as possible.
Life would always be filled with choices, and I would say that every decision you and I
make would be the right one.
There is no such thing as the wrong one.
If the choice you have made now (or near to now) has not turned out well, then
make a better one the next time.

I end this post with a quote from Princess Dairies 2:

"Courage is not the absence of fear.
It is rather the judgement that something is more important than fear"

After Exam

It had been a long time since I wrote something on my blog....

Could not find a suitable time to update my blog before this....

I think I won't talk about my exam, I will just keep my hands crossed till the results

Let's flashback to see what has happened in these past few months...

1. 14 May - 11 June

A-Level Examination

I think although this was only an 11 paper examination but it was the most tiring one. I think it was a good thing that the papers were spread to five weeks so that I have time to revise for the last time. In between I went for The Star Education Fund interview at Brickfields Asia College on 15 May the day after my first paper(Law P1) and I got it. But I rejected the offer. I will say out the reason but not now.

Economics class

(I couldn't locate my Business class photo..)

The end of exam also marked the end of my A-Level at Disted. Overall, it was a truly enjoyable time there with all my comrades. Hopefully we will all enter our most desired next tertiary education path.

2. Sometime in May

I have lost count of how many new neighbours have moved into my neighbourhood. And in May again the house right opposite my house welcomed its new owners. They brought along two new dogs, Blacky and Doggy (my brother and I named them since we do not know their names). Blacky and Doggy are two newcomers after Robert, Tommy, Cashey, Dog1, Jill and Dog2 (some also named by my brother and me)

DBP Essay Contest

After no news for around one year finally I won fourth place for the contest, and I don't even remember what I wrote. But doesn't matter, the cheque prize did reach my house but sadly book prize I assume was taken ACCIDENTALLY by either the postman or the DBP staff. It was an encouragement after the bad loss in the previous competition.

Finally, the 20 high performance school has been announced.
And PFS is not in. I must say that I am rather upset, but deep down I am happy because PFS need some hit on the head to realise that the school can no longer count on the glories of the past. Even being in the cluster school list is a form of denial to our school. Many Old Frees and Frees might question the MOE's decision to exclude PFS, but I think this is the time where we need to prove ourselves.

PFS must change and wake up form her long sleep, dreaming that she's still the Grand Old Lady. I sincerely hope that the day when PFS will regain its glory will return.

Too Sweet....

Many people have informed me that my blog has been left un-updated for quite some time.

So I thought of writing this post so that I will refresh the blog.

I have just eaten honey guava(as translated by Google Translator from the Malay name jambu madu). The fruit is much sweeter than ordinary jambus and I was OK eating the first few pieces but after eating more of it, I don't really like it anymore.

I think life is just like this. When we eat too much sugar, we have higher risk of getting diabetes. And when our lives are filled with too many sweet moments, the feeling of sweetness may not be enjoyed to the fullest.

That's why we are BLESSED with a life full of ups and downs so that whenever we have endured the toughest moments i.e. the bitter part, we would be able to enjoy the good part to the fullest when we have perseverd through the tough moments. And that is how we would always get to 'taste' new fresh 'sweet' flavours in our life.

With few more days left, I hope that we would all be able to stand the bitter taste of our lives in 2010 and proclaim victory and get a good nice new refreshing sweet tate in the end.

The Differing Faces of South East Asia - Touring Exhibition of Chia Hoy Sai's Artworks

Chia Hoy Sai, was born in Tanjong Sepat, Selangor in 1948. He graduated from SM Pin Hua, Klang, Selangor in 1967. He continued his studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore from 1968 to 1969. He has held several solo and joint art exhibitions, excelling in oil, pastel and charcoal. His presentation is diverse, but he claimed his prominence by painting local fruits and portraits. His artworks are well received by both foreign and local collectors.

In May 2000, Chia personally experienced an unforgettable scene in a small town named Serian, Sarawak. "There I saw many minority people from the Iban, Bidayuh and Dayak tribes communicating in a language that I did not understand. They lived happily and harmoniously together. I was deeply touched by their harmonious brotherhood."

This world consists of a big family of different races. This touching scene of "a family of different tribes" has shown him the way to move forward, guided by a basic idea of being "multi-racial and multi-cultural". He self-proclaimed himself as "a Traveller", and "a steadfast worker of Art". From August 2000 onwards, he began his journey from Sarawak, soldiering on with his heavy equipment to Bali, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. Walking alone deep into the mountains of Indo-China and living primitively, he painted portraits of different tribal people that exemplified his feeling of life experience and unique artistic sense.

Through many sketches in black and white done over years of difficult struggle, he presents portraits of different faces and cultures to the world in "The Differing Faces of South East Asia," leaving behind an invaluable spiritual heritage for mankind. "I have painted these portraits," he says, "with my whole being."

"The Differing Faces of South East Asia - Touring Exhibition of Chia Hoy Sai's Artworks" will begin in May 2009, and start touring to SGM Culture Centres in Klang, Negeri Sembilan, Johor Bahru, Lapis, Melaka, Kuantan, Terengganu, Kelantan, Ipoh, Kampar, Bukit Tampun, Penang Island, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur. He will share his touching stories and hold talks on Art at every stop.

Malaysian TV Station News

I have wanted to write this quite some time already, but was quite lazy.

So, I think I have watched a lot of nonsense on TV since after SPM to pass time, and that includes watching news from all the stations.(don't ask me why)

And here I will pen down some of what I have seen and analysed...

Most news reports are pro-Government ( FUN FACT: there are only two non-paid tv companies in Malaysia i.e. RTM and MPB only. RTM owns TV1 and TV2 while MPB owns TV3, ntv7, TV8 and TV9)
RTM news have very lengthy approach and sometimes very absurd reports. Their news readers, quite many of them read in a very arrogant tone.
Out of so many I think I would send my praise to ntv7, which depicts news with a sense of "caring and informative" way, except maybe for Charles Mohan sometimes
TV3 although it's a private station is very pro-Government

I think that's all for now, and always when I write articles like that I would like to state that I try to be as neutral as possible and I am not inclined to any side as far as possble.

AS Exam over.....

As promised, I wrote that I will update my blog again after my AS. So my AS last paper was yesterday. And I thought of penning some of my thoughts here today....

There's around 1 more month to second semester...so need to take some time to see what to prepare for A2 since A2 is harder than AS
Went back to PFS last Saturday for MUET...remembered the secondary school times...will be going back again on 16th Nov. By the way thanks to Mr. Tan S.G. for his kindness to allow me to take MUET in PFS
Watched Where Got Ghost one day before Econs P1, felt that it's just OK
Quite many plans to go out this holidays

Host serves little purpose

I AM totally disappointed with RTM’s coverage of the third Parliamentary session 2009. Last year, the Information Ministry (now the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry) had announced that RTM through TV1 would broadcast the question-and-answer session for one hour live from the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.

However, beginning Oct 12, the live broadcast was reduced to only 30 minutes. Making the situation worse, half of the broadcast was used by the host to comment on the question-and-answer sessions.

Most of the time, viewers are only able to see one question being answered by the ministers or deputy ministers.

The appearance of a host to interview Members of Parliament is totally absurd. They not only take up time but also serve little purpose. The rakyat are mature enough to judge what is being said in the Parliament.

The appearance of the host with panelists only makes the show no different from many other of RTM’s forum shows.

Besides that, RTM’s special news on Parliament entitled “Dari Parlimen” is only broadcast at 11.30pm which is way too late.
