Fathers be good to your daughters.

If you are a long-time reader, you know that I have a strained relationship with my biological father. Read my Open note to a a dead-beat dad.
Psttt you're gonna wanna check out these open letters to daughters from celebrity fathers. Too precious.

Fathers are supposed to be good to their daughters, right?

Unfortunately, life doesn't always work that way I've realized.

This song leaves me in tears, each and every time.

I'm sure many of you have stumble across the heartfelt list of 50 Rules for Dads of Daughters. If not, I recommend you check it out.. be sure to have some tissues prepared! I'm not sure why, but my father, who I haven't spoken to in months has been on my mind a considerable amount lately. My relationship with my dad over the past several years has been less than perfect. He's let me down time and time again.

I just want to highlight a few he ~~failed miserably~~:

1. Love her mom. Treat her mother with respect, honor, and a big heaping spoonful of public displays of affection. When she grows up, the odds are good she’ll fall in love with and marry someone who treats her much like you treated her mother.

2. Always be there. Quality time doesn’t happen without quantity time. Hang out together for no other reason than just to be in each other’s presence. Be genuinely interested in the things that interest her. She needs her dad to be involved in her life at every stage. Don’t just sit idly by while she add years to her… add life to her years.

3. Save the day. She’ll grow up looking for a hero. It might as well be you. She’ll need you to come through for her over and over again throughout her life. Rise to the occasion.

4. Savor every moment you have together. Today she’s crawling around the house in diapers, tomorrow you’re handing her the keys to the car, and before you know it, you’re walking her down the aisle. Some day soon, hanging out with her old man won’t be the bees knees anymore. Life happens pretty fast. You better cherish it while you can.

8. Tell her she’s beautiful. Say it over and over again. Someday an animated movie or “beauty” magazine will try to convince her otherwise

15. Dance with her. Start when she’s a little girl or even when she’s a baby. Don’t wait ‘til her wedding day. Do I spend nights wondering who will walk me down the aisle?

42. Let her know she can always come home. No matter what. Packing my stuff in boxes and throwing me out at 16 probably wasn't your best call.

43. Remember, just like a butterfly, she too will spread her wings and fly some day. Enjoy her caterpillar years.

50. Today she’s walking down the driveway to get on the school bus. Tomorrow she’s going off to college. Don’t blink.

I don't want my real father to be the one to walk me down the aisle. He hasn't been there for me. My step-father, Scott will be the one to do the honors.

My “dad” Scott. Don’t let his tough exterior fool you. It may be one that’s hard to break through, but underneath it all, he’s such a softy. He would do anything for his kids, from making delicious meals to giving us rides before we could drive, to just being there as a father figure for my little brother and I. He works like a soldier, building his very own business from the ground up was no easy feat. Simple things such as random texts he sends me telling me he’s thinking of me, make my day that much better. Although we had our differences at first, as in all mixed families, he is a man that I have truly grown to admire.

My father. Maybe this could have all been prevented had I been more mature, stronger. Maybe if I’d contained my temper at 16 when I was strongly opposed to my father’s choice in his wife. Maybe. But that’s silly. It’s him, not me. He was the adult who made the decisions he did. I've come to realize that my dad pushes me from his life because he doesn’t want to face the mistakes he has made. I don't think it's ever good for a daughter to be without her father, but in this case, my father is not the person inhabiting his body right now. I'll be okay. I'll be stronger because of all of this. For what it's worth, I do love you.

Do I miss him? Each and every day. Thanks dad, thanks for being there the first 15 years of my life anyways.

Operation Beautiful V.13

As expected, I received overwhelming interest in my Operation Beautiful project. Thus, the showcase will roll out 10 lovely ladies each Monday until I stop receiving entries...hopefully never :)

This project is to make you think, ponder, appreciate the simple things about yourself, that add up and make you truly beautiful. The smaller qualities that you adore about yourself, like your lips or eyes, that make you feel pretty on the worst of days.

This project is about your talents, your secret hidden abilities, your amazing personalities. Those quirks which make you, uniquely you. I feel most beautiful when… I'm happy. It honestly doesn't matter what I look like-if I'm happy I feel more beautiful and more alive! Also for some reason, right before bed-even if my makeup is smudged for some reason I'm always prettiest when the day is already over!

My favorite physical feature is my... Eyes. They change colors and they can be quite vivid!

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... My compassion. I have love for just about everyone, even people who other people may deem as undeserving-I still feel for them.

I'm happiest when... I'm with the people in my life that matter most. My friends, my family, etc. These people constantly lift me up and make my life a brighter place!

I feel most beautiful when…someone compliments me on something other than my appearance. I love hearing that I'm funny, kind or a good writer. It makes me feel beautiful on the outside when someone can recognize my beauty on the inside.

My favorite physical feature is my... I'd have to say my hair. It grows long very quickly, is healthy and has a natural wavy texture that can easily be curled or straightened (or worn natural!) There's just something beautiful about long, layered curls and I love mine!

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... I love that I am an honest, straight-up person. I don't believe in sugar coating things or pretending to be someone I'm not. I've grown a thick backbone over the years and have no problem standing up for myself or my loved ones. It's something not everyone has (people are afraid of being labeled as the b-word), so I love that I have that trait.

I'm happiest when... I'm spending time doing things I love with the people I love. Some of my happy moments include singing along to a band at a concert, every moment spent with my boyfriend, playing with kittens and reminiscing with old friends.

If I could do attempt anything and could not fail, I'd want to finish the novel I started in high school, publish it and actually sell some copies. Not to be famous or have JK Rowling status or anything, but it would be so cool to go to Barnes and Noble and see my name on a book!

My own mother has fallen victim to many of these products, easily swayed by anything marketed by Oprah, claiming to contain healthy antioxidants, or labeled with the words 'anti-aging.' Since the launch of the infamous Snuggie, there have been several other laughable products that just get you wondering, who the hell buys this stuff?

Bump-Its: My sister and I recieved these in our stockings from Santa 2 years ago (thanks mom). Even Snooki hates the Bump-It trend. I mean come on, who wants a little plastic arch peaking out from underneath their hair? And when you're in the moment with that special someone, it may come as a shocker when they tousle your hair and find this creature.

Gyro Bowl: The point of this being? I've got an idea, lets pay $14.99 plus $9.99 shipping for a piece of plastic so our children will be entertained as they eat! And who thinks it's a good idea to put pudding in this 360 contraption to turn upside down over your head?

Turbie Twist: Okay so I admit, I do own 3 of these, in a variety of colors (thanks mom). They are quite handy, especially for dorm life. Instead of wrapping a huge towel around your head that will ineveitably fall off, this invention makes that walk down the hallway simpler, scratching maybe a few seconds off your daily routine. A towel in the shape of a turban? They could have thought of a more politically correct name for the product, I must say.

Cami-Secret: The before and after appear to be switched. "Gives the layered look of a camisole, without the hassle or bulk of an entirely separate garment" I've got a fab idea, lets sell a tiny piece of fabric to cover you up! I mean, have you ever thought about how tough life must be for your neighborhood hoochie? She loves to flash her cleavage at bars and clubs, but must keep it business professional around the office. She could bring a change of clothes, but that gets cumbersome to lug around everyday. This boob apron works wonders, I'm sure.

Easy Feet: A shower for your feet! Could mankind get any lazier if we tried?

Pajama jeans: Not gonna lie, these would be a good investment for college kids ready to pass out when they stumble in at 3am and opt not to change into pj's, take off makeup, or brush their teeth. Yet as a Miami University student, it's not socially acceptable to wear jeans out on the town. Even if it's 32 below in the dead of winter, skimpy dresses are a must. So we run into a problemo. And at $30 a pop, that's as much as I'd pay for real un-hideous jeans. Forget it!

Booty Pop: Woah, a push-up bra for you butt?! I, myself could benefit from these (thanks for the advice mom). I've heard horror stories about women dancing up on men and the pads scootching to the front. Can you say creepy? They're a no go.

Shake Weight: If you use one of these and you're a man, I'm shaling my head. Why waste the money when you've got your own? And if you're a woman shaker, men will ineveitably raise eyebrows... and assess your skill level. Come on women, let's keep things PG in the exercise arena. And honestly, how big are your muscles truly gonna get with this mechanism? If anyone's tested, I'm dying to know.

Tiddy Bear: The ad features 2 chicks obviously frustrated with the lack of furry stimulation to their upper torso who claim "seatbelts make it hard for them to breathe" Instead of investing in a ribcage implant to provide the protection their internal organs so desperately need, she opted for the Tiddy Bear. The reality: Who the hell would find an irregularly shaped bear comfortable? And what kind of person would wear that monstrosity proudly on their chest, except maybe your 3 year old? I really hoped they were kidding about this one...

Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? Young Einsteins in the making. And last but certainly not least:

Animee: A new beer specifically for the ladies! A “less gassy and lighter tasting” alternative to conventional beers, it comes in three varieties: standard, rose and citrus. I hope the men at the table aren't immasculated when I start pouring this stuff into the red solo cups. Hey maybe it'll be the wave of the future in alcoholism. I'm sold!

I mean who comes up with this stuff? And better yet, who falls for it? Mhmm mom, you're embarasssing.

Reveal of the NEW hair!

Last month I was chosen as a hair model for Kenneths. My stylist cut and colored my hair ON STAGE in front of hundreds of people. Kenneth himself, the now retired owner of the salons across central Ohio was on stage with us. Just as nerve-racking for me as for her I'm sure!

I really got the taste of the model life, as I began the day loaded on caffeine at 7am, and stayed until late that night. We got professional makeup and a yummy lunch, not to mention a free cut, color, and $50 to Kenneth's so it was more than worth it.

Lily was so excited to have "virgin" hair to work with, as I've never colored my hair. I told her to go wild and work her magic with it, what better time than your senior year of college to experiment before you have to go all professional and what not?

Don't be scared by my clown-esque stage makeup. The salon was trying to make me look like a beautiful sunset of colors, haha. In all honesty, it is way too blonde for my liking, but I suppose I can deal since it's summer time.

Would I ever be an actual model? Never, I'm too awkward. But hair modeling may be my new thing ;)

I feel most beautiful when… My husband tells me how lovely, beautiful or nice I look when I'm trying my least to be that way.

My favorite physical feature is my... hair, mainly because I love fixing and doing my hair...and other peoples...this is a new revelation to myself as well as to you. :)

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... my desire to make my home welcoming. I love having people over and cherish time spent with friends, playing games and having a good time in my home.

I'm happiest when... .I rest in the fact that I am not perfect but in fact a sinner who has been redeemed graciously by a loving and merciful God and that I am indeed beautiful inside because of Him.

I feel most beautiful when… I am freshly showered, finished getting ready, and listening to a playlist of songs that make me feel like I can do ANYTHING.

My favorite physical feature is my... Big expressive eyes. I always look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, even when I'm not really feeling that way, and it's all thanks to big bright baby blues :)

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... My tenacity and reliance on instinct to get me where I need to go. I follow my gut and do so tirelessly, and it has never steered me in the wrong direction.

I'm happiest when... The weather is warm and there's just the slightest breeze brushing across my face.

I feel most beautiful when…I'm in an outfit I feel confident in. When I've got that perfect outfit (plus cat-eye eyeliner and bold lipstick!), my self-confidence radiates and I feel beautiful inside and out.

My favorite physical feature is my... legs. I have gotten many compliments on them over the years and take pride in that because I literally walk EVERYWHERE! Always glad to see it has paid off!

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... My ability to find the beauty in anything. I can find beauty in the small things like summer rain, watching a sunset, or catching snowflakes on my tongue. I love to take items from the thrift store, things that most people would find “ugly” and re-create them into something unique and beautiful.

I'm happiest when... I'm surrounded by friends and family.I greatly value my relationships with others and there's nothing better than being with people you love and laughing until your stomach hurts :)

I feel most beautiful when… wearing a t shirt, cut off shorts, flip flops, a little lip gloss and riding my skateboard on a warm, summer day!

My favorite physical feature is my... Being naturally thin. Sure one day it will probably catch up to me though between genetics and my hyper personality it's hard to tell. Although I must admit for being skinny I have more of a boyish shape with waist and hips that are almost identical, makes it very hard to buy jeans.

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... My honesty and loyalty. Oh and playfulness....yes I'm still a kid at heart. I love to skateboard, play on the swings, indulge in big wheel rides with my niece, bike ride, mini golf, shoot hoops in the backyard, laugh, play wii or board games and so on.

I'm happiest when... With the people I love my dog, man and family, at the beach, gardening, reading a good book, kissing and when the sun is shining!

Something non-physical that I love about myself is... "I am a very positive person (which took alot of practice)...... if you are talking to me and your are having a negative day I can always achieve to make you switch your negative thinking to positive. There is always a way to be positive you just gotta be open minded to do so. :) It pays off at the end of the day :)

What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

I would train to become a member of the U.S. Women's National soccer team. Looking back on my years as a soccer player, I didn't train with the intensity that I could have. Since I hung up my cleats, I've fallen in love with the sport again but as a spectator and fan but nothing could possibly compare with actually being on the field and representing the United States.

If a front page news article was written on you, what would the headline be?

"Sara Actually Figures Out Her Life Plan". I joke around a lot about not knowing what I want to pursue in life post-graduation but it's the honest to God truth. Trying to figure out a direction/career path is something that I'm struggling with now and when I do finally get it all straightened out, it WILL be news worthy :)

How to: Restore your faith in humanity

1. Spend time helping those less fortunate than you

Realize there are so many people out there far far worse off than you, who have faced far greater struggles and challenges, yet still manage to meet each day with passion and positivity, believing that being alive is a reward in its own.

Rather than simply reading about such people, I challenge you to get involved and experience first-hand the hardships experienced by others. Don’t just throw money at a charity, but rather fully immerse yourself in the environment or culture of those you are helping. Whether volunteering at a hospital for children with terminal diseases or in a disaster relief community where people have lost homes and livelihoods, realize that you have so much to offer. Have you checked out my Blessings Bags project? It’s a tradition I plan to continue the rest of my life.

However bad things may seem in your life at any time, being able to look back and reflect on the determination of those undergoing severe hardships can help you to realize that human beings truly are strong and resilient creatures. It really does put things into perspective.

2. Focus on the "good" in society

It seems we are constantly fed only bad stories through the media. You turn on the local 5 o’clock news to be bombarded with homicides, fires, and riots. Believe it or not, there is a plethora of positive, inspiring and uplifting stories about the good that people do each day. Celebrate those awe-inspiring moments when people do something incredible, such as forgoing a race win to help an injured fellow athlete, rescuing a pet caught in a burning home, shaking hands with an enemy during a detente in hostilities, etc.

Selectively follow social media network friends and fans who deliberately choose to share good news and are regularly sharing inspiring things (cough cough, me) rather harping on the negative. Become a part of spreading the power and worthiness of decent, kind and caring actions.

3. Pick a charity to dedicate your energy toward

This does not necessarily mean money but time! The American Heart Association is near and dear to my heart ever since my Grandpa Schultz passed away from a heart attack. My family does a heart walk every fall and raise tons of money. I am also a big supporter of YWCA: Youth Women Children Association in my city and have asked for donations to this charity the past 3 Christmases in place of gifts.

My sister is an avid animal lover so loves volunteering her time at the local zoo. Others are more inspired by faith-based charity, conserving the environment. There are so many options out there. The world can never have too much helping hands.

4. Encourage faith in your fellow humans through your actions.

Try seeing the world in a more trusting, less demanding way. Think Gandhi's famous line to "be the change you wish to see in the world". When you model the kind of change you want to see spread, you spark virtuous ripples that, even if they don't directly benefit you personally move forth to benefit others, thereby continuously improving the community of which you are a part.

5. Trust more

Loan a friend your favorite top without specifying a return date, having faith that the things will return when they need to. Perhaps you have worried in the past as to where your charity donation ends up, or you're concerned that the homeless person will run off and buy beer rather than a place to rest his or her head for the night, causing you to not donate anything at all. Instead of imposing your will, just give. Have faith that that donation will do what it needs to do. Sometimes people will do the wrong thing by you, but on the whole, it's much more likely that you'll be surprised by how people repay your faith in them positively, returning trust with trust––and gratitude. Implementing this extent of faith in others can be very scary at first, especially if you've been very attached to things/money but when you've reached this stage, you will have traveled far in restoring your faith in humanity.

6. “Practice random acts of kindness,

….and senseless acts of beauty.” such as topping up your neighboring driver's parking meter when you see it's nearly empty

7. Pay it forward.

Instead of asking that your good deed be repaid, ask that the return favor be "paid forward" to someone else in need. For example, perhaps you can afford to help a student attend a course that he or she would otherwise be unable to afford. In turn, ask that student to do likewise in the future for another student he or she comes across unable to afford a course

Make room for others, even though you don't know them. When the traffic is heavy let others in. They are human too, they feel as you do, and what a delightful shock to learn that someone else cares about them. Your thoughtfulness will reverberate as many of those you let in will feel the need to let someone else in some other time. And on it goes.

8. Remember that you too form part of humanity.

Your preferred world won't come about by distancing yourself from your fellow humans or by constantly deploring them.

9. Restore your faith in yourself.

If you feel that most of humanity is doomed or facile, perhaps the problem lies within. Learn to forgive yourself and believe in yourself more. Step out of your comfort zone to learn new things and to push yourself to do things that you're worried you might fail at. Be bold––the world deserves your talents.

If you prefer despair over hope or complaining over action, then you will find negativity wherever you look. On the other hand, you can choose to have faith in humanity, in many of the ways described above. Moreover, you can choose to be kind as a form of taking a stand against the injustices, violence, wastage and hunger in the world. You may feel powerless in the face of what seems terrible at times but you are not. Kindness is quiet, unobtrusive empowerment of every individual; by being kind, you affirm the kind of world you want to be a part of.

90’s baby. 9 pounds, 8 ounces. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Parents divorced at 9. Grandpa Schultz passed away. Experienced 9/11 terrorist attacks. Found my first “love” in 10^th grade. Started scrapbooking to capture the memories. Grandpa Prather passed away. Played Varsity tennis all four years at first singles. Attended 4 proms. Graduated 15^th in a class of 600 with a 4.21 GPA. First job at Molina Healthcare. Spent the summer interning in DC for Booz Allen Hamilton. Started this little blog in 2011. Studying finance and business analytics at Miami University in beautiful Oxford. Got a job based out of Australia. Cheers to 21 years this weekend!
