It was an enormous challenge.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;">At the same time, my mother was in the final stages of cancer.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;">I worked during the day and drove 40 miles home to be with her every night. It was tiring and stressful, but it was what I wanted to do. My commitment was to continue to do excellent consulting during the day, even though my evenings were very hard. I didn't want to bother the president with my situation, yet I felt someone at the company needed to know what was going on. So I told the vice-president of Human Resources, asking him not to share the information with anyone.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;">A few days later, the president called me into his office. I figured he wanted to talk to me about one of the many issues we were working on. When I entered, he asked me to sit down. He faced me from across his desk, looked me in the eye and said "I hear your mother is very ill."</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;">I was totally caught by surprise and burst into tears. He just looked at me, let my crying subside and then gently said a sentence I will never forget: "Whatever you need."</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;">That was it. What I did to my arm in the photo above is draw a peace sign with the back of an eraser and I did not even push that hard. What you are seeing is about 3 minutes in - see the peace sign? Reading this today did just that...I cried and cried and cried some more (a therapeutic cry really). This poignant story about love weaves you through the joy of new puppies, the heartbreak of finding out that they aren't "perfect", unconditional love, sorrow, the true pleasures of owning a pet and if you have one ounce of tenderness in your heart this story just may make you shed a tear too - even if you are a tough old bird! Why oh why did they give him blank stares&nbsp;when he spoke the word of the Lord? He&rsquo;d practiced time and again the infliction&hellip;&rdquo;and the <em>fire</em> rose up, the <em>devil</em> swirled outta&nbsp;the smoke, <em>grabbed</em> every last one into the depths of <em>hell fire</em> to be <em>lost forever</em> for not <em>beleivin&rsquo;</em> in the <em>everlastin&rsquo;&nbsp;truth</em>&ldquo;. He always remembered to drag out the word truth too because that is what folks wanted to hear, hinged their hopes on&hellip;&rsquo;the trooth&rsquo;!</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">Weary, Joel slipped behind the curtain. He kicked himself, yet again, for having no desire to face the questions from the congregation.&nbsp;Tonight he wanted to walk&hellip;walk off the weight on his shoulders, breath the crisp Fall air, try to get back to the way he felt&hellip;hmmm how had he&nbsp;felt before now? Would tonight&rsquo;s walk finally bring him the answers? Joel pushed past those overt emotions, daddy&rsquo;s voice in his head&hellip;&rdquo;You stand&nbsp;strong boy or I&rsquo;ll whip ya to make sure ya knows how!&rdquo;</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">Childhood memories made Joel digress to hate&hellip;hating those memories made it even more painful for him. When he attempted to surface-talk&nbsp;about his feelings to his seminary advisor, Joel could tell by the downward turn of his eyes the advisor did not understand, probably blamed Joel for being&nbsp;that unruly child. It wasn&rsquo;t until Chloe that Joel knew he&rsquo;d met the one person in the world that knew, knew his heart&rsquo;s pain. She realized he was&nbsp;good even though he was told time and time and time again that he wasn&rsquo;t! Beautiful, childlike, loving Chloe.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">Tonight Joel was finding his way down to the grassy spot by the river&rsquo;s bank. Mid-way down the embankment Joel swore Chloe&rsquo;s cinnamon scent&nbsp;wafted past. It was so subtle, should he shimmy to the top, to peek, look for her flowing blonde hair? Emotionally twisted, Joel decided to move on,&nbsp;find his way to the grassy patch by the part of the river that trickled over tiny rocks. A place that gave him serenity from the crazy noise, the noise that&nbsp;always rushed through his head.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">Vibrantly green, cushy soft, that patch of grass welcomed Joel to settle in. As he laid back, heading into auto mode, Joel rose his hands to heaven, tears&nbsp;streamed quietly over his ears. The ears that had not heard real &lsquo;trooth&rsquo; or Chloe&rsquo;s lilting voice for&hellip;months, years...decades. &ldquo;Lord show me the way&rdquo; his arms&nbsp;now spasms with pleading. &ldquo;What am I to do Lord?&rdquo; Silence. Time ticked. Impatience set in. Thank goodness for distractions and my sometimes feeble mind! </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">This <strong>spider</strong> was awesome to watch. He nabbed that <strong>fly</strong> and within a matter of 10 minutes he &lt;---assumption on my part it's a boy :) had it stung, wrapped up and safely tucked away for his midnight snack. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">To bring out the characters in this <strong>photo</strong> the only adjustment I made was to posterize the background. As an amateur photographer I'm still learning to play with lighting, positioning, et al...even so I'm liking this rather candid shot taken from my kitchen window with my trusty <strong>Kodak EasyShare Z710</strong>!</span></p> <p><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>UPDATE 09-16-2010</strong> This whole scene was "outside" my kitchen window....lol!
