Do not now seek the answers... Live the questions. ~Rainer Maria Rilke

The publishing world can be a slow, slow one (much slower than, say, the online media world of blogging, Tweeting, and YouTube) and waiting to hear back from publishers requires a tremendous amount of patience. I am remembering to breathe, and taking it slowly, keeping in mind the old axiom that rejections come quickly but acceptances and actual book deals take significantly longer. It's been 5 months since the initial blast was sent out. In the pub biz, that's a blink of an eye. Please, if you have a moment, send some patience magic this way and I'll be sure to reimburse you in the future.

Sort of a one-stop blog post that answers some general FAQ about who, what, when, where, how, and why :-)

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or if you're interested in participating in the book by filling out my Fire Dancers Questionnaire!

Here's my story... well, the relevant information, anyway ;-)

THE FIRE DANCING STUFF

I started fire dancing in April 2002, when I was unemployed and needed a new hobby to take my mind off the want ads. I met a girl on Craigslist (Glitter Girl), who offered poi spinning lessons. I’d seen fire dancers at Burning Man but was always too intimidated to approach any of them, so I was intrigued by the opportunity to learn this performance art.

Just before Burning Man 2002, I joined up with a casual group of fire folks in Oakland, who got together every full moon to spin poi and staff on a friend’s apartment rooftop. By December, five of us decided to start a professional troupe, complete with choreography, costuming, and a website. Thus, my troupe Fire Arts Collective was born.

Fire Arts Collective (FAC) has performed at many different events and venues, including Google's Holiday Party, The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose's Annual Member's Party, Hawaiian luaus, Children's Fairyland, the San Francisco Opera Anniversary Gala, Barclay’s Global Investors Holiday Party, San Francisco City Hall, and even weddings. In 2005, we traveled to Los Angeles to perform at a high school halftime show in the exclusive Diamond Bar district. FAC has performed with the Burning Man Fire Conclave since 2003.

FAC has been featured in regional and national media publications, including Dance Spirit magazine, the Oakland Tribune, and the LA Times.

I have been teaching fire dancing in San Francisco since 2007, including poi and staff, performing with fingers and fans, and performance skills.

THE WRITING STUFF

A bookworm by nature, I've always loved the written word. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and a BA in Communication from Santa Clara University.

From 2002-2007, I worked at Google as a Corporate Trainer for new hires. In my five years there, I wrote and edited several styles of writing: technical writing, training manuals, marketing material, newsletters, customer service documents, client emails, live forum communication, and more. I had the opportunity there to meet and get to know many incredibly brilliant and talented people – many of whom also went to Burning Man and/or were somehow involved in the fire arts scene, and a few of whom are fellow fire performers!

I write a blog that’s ostensibly about fire dancing (er, this one!) and hold accounts with MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Tribe.net, YouTube, Home of Poi, and the new site Fire Garden, to keep in touch with other fire dancers around the world.

In 2007, I published a third-person experiential account of fire dancing for the magazine Conscious Dancer, and I am the author of several instructional articles on fire dancing for the online how-to site eHow.com.

My writing has been featured in many print and online publications for both journalism and poetry/fiction, including Identity Theory, SFStation.com, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Apalachee Review, Coe Review, Fugue, Karamu, and The Santa Clara Review.

THE BOOK STUFF

The idea for a book about fire dancing had been simmering in the back of my mind for a couple of years. It wasn't until I quit my corporate job that I finally took the time to re-focus on writing.

In December 2008, I got an agent in LA, who is representing me and working to sell the book to a major publisher. The book is currently in the hands of a bunch of publishers, and whether I receive a major book deal remains to be seen, so keep your fingers crossed and I'll keep you updated!

IF a book deal with a major publisher does not go through, I have a Plan B (and a Plan C), so no matter what, the book WILL become a reality.

Stoke the Fire: The Art of Modern Fire Dancing (the working title) will explore the evolution of modern fire dancing, while providing the reader with fascinating photographs, first-person accounts, and interviews with professional and amateur fire dancers around the world.

Stoke the Fire will be a celebration of the performance art, but it’s not a how-to book. Instead, this book will allow readers to fully experience the wonder and awe of fire dancing. On the market today, there exist a few instruction manuals for poi spinning and other manipulative arts; a book on the fire knife dance, a specific Polynesian tradition; and a handful of books about Burning Man and raves of the ‘90s, which mention electrifying fire dancers and hypnotic glowstick-twirlers. But there has yet to be published a book specifically devoted to celebrating the colorful and vibrant scene of the modern fire dancing world, in all of its fuel-soaked and callused-fingered glory – that book is Stoke the Fire.

A TINY EXCERPT FROM MY BOOK PROPOSAL...

In the 21st century, the art of fire dancing has been taken to a new extreme. At once modern and ancient, sophisticated and tribal, contemporary fire dancing is the art of manipulating poi (wicks on the ends of chains), staff, hoops, and other tools such as aluminum fingers and fans or wooden clubs and batons, which have been fitted with wicking, soaked in fuel, and lit on fire. The underground circus has been reinvented for the above-ground stage, with modern-day fire dancers performing in dynamic acts like Cirque du Soleil, making silver screen appearances in movies like Charlie’s Angels and The Beach, and appearing on stage and in music videos alongside pop music superstars like Justsin Timberlake, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera.

How did it get this way? Many people attribute the growth of this modern art to Burning Man, the art festival in the Nevada desert, which more than 48,000 people now attend yearly. Additionally, the growth of Internet forums and online communities has allowed fire dancers from all over the world to connect with and learn from each other. The online community Tribe.net has almost 2500 members in a specialty group called The Art of Poi; my profile listing “fire dancing” as an interest connects me to over 3200 others who have listed the same. The website www.fire-dancing.com lists professional fire performers in countries as far-flung as Finland, Slovakia, and South Africa.

...

Stoke the Fire will provide a rich and highly entertaining experience for all who are enthralled with the flame.

Please drop me a line if you have any questions.

Take care and keep burning!

And thanks for reading :-)

Let the world share in your delight of great ink and furry felines.

Cats and Tats ~ like Cute Overload, but edgier

Or submit your pics here: catsandtats@gmail.com

(The pic above, btw, is by Shag ~ one of my all-time fave artists!)

Great writers, great readers. I go on first, just a short little stint on the mic. But then I get to kick back and enjoy everyone else. Huge plus there.

The evening's theme is "What to Want: or, the lineaments of gratified desire." And I've the perfect short story to fit the theme. NO, I can't tell you what the story is! You'll have to come to the reading to find out :-)

Here's the info (and yes, there's a bar - food, too!):

Thursday, February 19
Cafe Royale
800 Post Street @ Leavenworth, SF
6:30-8:30PM
http://www.insidestorytime.com/
http://www.caferoyale-sf.com/

Hope to see you there! xoxo

P.S. - I may also, in fact, wear the cute beatnik outfit the girl in the cartoon is wearing

Keep your fingers and toes crossed (but not your poi chains, please)!

I've been keeping a little, lo-fi video diary of updates as the book progresses. Check it out and subscribe or bookmark it if you're interested in developments on the book! Plus, as I get to interviews with fire dancers, there's potential for some pretty cool videos (more interesting than me sitting at my desk, that is ;-)

http://stokethefirebook.blogspot.com/

Thanks again for all of your support! You aren't necessarily comfortable because your old ways of relating to the future have already started to change, yet the new vision hasn't completely taken over yet. A real, honest-to-goodness publisher. So, keep your fingers crossed, kiddos, and wish me luck - the book may actually see light of day before the world ends in 2012!

It has been quite a grueling process: writing my proposal, researching agents, querying agents, having them respond, then getting rejected - however, somewhat less heartbreaking than the 80 rejections I got for my novel the first time around :-)

It's been the kick in the pants that I've needed to get back on track contacting fire dancers around the country. I'm starting off with a pretty general and basic questionnaire, and then will follow up with phone or in-person interviews at some point.

The input from fire dancers is VITAL for this book and it's been so amazing to read what some people have written in their questionnaire answers! So beautiful and insightful!

If YOU are a fire dancer - professional, amateur, teacher, student, whatever! - and want to participate in this project, please drop me an email and let me know. I'd love to hear from you!

Will promise to keep this blog updated as things make headway. For now, happy 2009!

Does it matter whether the reader is also attracted to him and would want to go out with him?

Discussion with my writing group last night led to a resounding YES. But the more I think about it, the more I lean towards NO. I've definitely read books where the protagonist meets a guy who I personally am not into - I don't understand his charm or his appeal or he wears Dockers or is a dork - but I buy that she is into him, and therefore I continue reading the story. It doesn't matter whether I am attracted to him or not.

I think that solidifies my decision, so I am going to keep on with the story as it is. Anyone out there have any thoughts?

I'm an organized person and I clean out my closets, desk, and cabinets often. But it's interesting to think about the things I continue to accumulate. I accumulate books, so many it's almost a problem... it used to be CDs and records and cassette tapes, before the MP3 era, and now its MP3s... then it was shoes, before I became a yoga teacher and pared my walkables down severely (living in flip-flops, all those heels became unnecessary, though I still have SO many - why?)... pillows, omg, I have accumulated so many pillows that I'm not allowed to buy any more! I may pick up the book this weekend (Ack! Did I just say that? Another book??) but maybe I can find a copy at the library instead....

What do YOU accumulate?

Due to some issues with rental space, Fire Arts Academy has NO group lessons in San Francisco or Campbell for the summer months.

HOWEVER, there ARE private lessons in San Francisco!! These have already started and are ongoing. Please email me or drop me a message if you are interested!

Private lessons include: Beginner Poi; Intermediate Poi; Beginner Staff; Fans & Fingers; and Performance Skills.

Lessons are $50/hr. per person and take place in the Outer Mission. One hour is sufficient to learn the basics, but two hours are recommended if you really wanna learn.

If you want to take one or more private lessons in San Francisco, email me at spacegirl@fireartscollective.com

If you want to take a group lesson in Oakland, please contact Little Jon: littlejon@fireartscollective.com

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Warmly,
~Spacegirl

Ahhh, it has been amazingly HOT and sunny here in typically cold and gray San Francisco. I have been love, love, loving the heat and sunshine... when I can get outside to enjoy it, that is. I've been stuck inside most of the day! But yesterday, Dave picked me up from work and we went straight to the beach for an early evening, sunset surf session - amazing! The water was great - perfect, 4-foot longboard waves, consistent sets... tons of people in the water, playing around, having a great time! Music on the beach, BBQs set up, kids and dogs - everybody in the water. It was like Hawaii or Mexico, right in my own backyard.

Got my proposal polished and finished and sent out the door yesterday, too! Keep your fingers crossed and wish me luck! It's soooooo different working with this book than with my novel - so much good energy - I'm feeling really clearheaded and jazzed about it right now.

Been working full-time proofreading but it's mellow. Heading to Florida next weekend for a getaway with the girls - feeling like shopping this weekend for the trip! Summer clothes - yay. Planning Hawaii in Sept. with Dave.... Just riding the waves, staying stoked.

Yes, as we know, there are practically NO books about fire dancing as we know it. That's why I'm here! But there ARE books about other things that are, in passing, related to fire dancing, like Burning Man and raves. Some of them only mention fire dancing a li'l bit, but they are otherwise great books. These, if you want to check them out, are what I'm talking about:

This is Not A Rave: In the Shadow of a Subculture, by Tara McCall - she really encapsulates so much of the vibe of raving in the '90s: phat pants, overalls, pigtails, and all. Focuses mostly on Canadian raves (she's Canadian), but some of the quotes/interviews are priceless.

This is Burning Man, by Brian Doherty - if you ever wanted an in-depth history of how Burning Man got started, this is your book. Published a few years ago, it doesn't cover the growth of uber-dance-camps and the "who's the DJ?" atmosphere that's taken over in many circles, but still a compelling read.

And it's not a book, but if you haven't ever read anything about fire dancing and don't know where to start, go to Home of Poi - read the histories! If you've been to HoP and only ordered new poi toys, you're missing out. Give yourself an hour or a few and read through their documentation. Some of it is incredibly helpful!

Baby steps, this little bugger of a book, but that's how everything starts, isn't it?
