In April of 2011, I traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts for the first time to experience the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. Over the course of three days, I got to see great sets from bands I love including BTBAM, Son of Aurelius, Last Chance to Reason, Wretched and many more as well as bands that I hadn't heard of but that blew me away.

Cycle through this playlist to listen to interviews I did with a series of bands including Across the Sun, Arsonists Get All the Girls, Hung, Legacy, Structures, This or the Apocalypse, and Volumes.

It was a great time with great new friends and great old friends. I hope you enjoy meeting some of the bands from the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival on White Noise Metal

That death metal music is heavy is a given. What sets the best bands of that genre apart is the ability to layer in super-technical yet still super-musical guitar solos, heavy breakdowns, compelling drum parts, and even acoustic elements to create an intricate whole. There aren't many bands in the world today that do all of that better than Burning the Masses.

"Have some Black Metal, Thrash Metal, some Speed Metal, and then calm it down with some acoustic and then have the 80's guitar solos come out of nowhere," BTM guitarist Arde Ostowari said when I met up with him and fellow shredder Chris Valenzuela over Super Bowl weekend in Oceanside, California, just north of San Diego. "We're trying to do something different. Why not throw in some killer guitar solos that people aren't doing now. You don't really hear a pentatonic guitar solo in death metal."

In many ways, Burning the Masses' newest album "Offspring of Time" is a microcosm of these varying styles of death metal. Chris and Arde each contributed five songs to the record.

"That was one I wrote," Chris said of the title track. "It was meant to be more of a faster, more intense, more technical song. Our drummer put the taste in that because our the drums make most of that song. The guitar parts are more in your face. I tried to make it more shreddy."

"I could tell with that song it's trying to make something that a listener would listen to and see that's less easy and more complicated," Arde stepped in. "Something like The Faceless and Deeds of Flesh. Necrophagist type where it's hard to figure out."

Listening to "Offspring of Time" is like taking a guided tour through the extreme metal landscape. Chris also wrote "Overseer Fixation" but did so with a completely different approach.

"That was supposed to be more of a Black Metal sort of thing," Chris noted. "More chordy on guitar and slower. A lot of our songs are so in your face, I wanted to slow that one down a little bit. That's what we were always about when we were younger was to throw in different styles."

"Ubiquitous Pillar" is one of the five songs Arde contributed. He said the song started out as a joke while playing around programming tunes on Garage Band but after showing it to Chris realized there was more to it.

"It was just a bunch of gnarly back to back guitar solos switching it up fucking Pantera stomp guitar solo out of nowhere," Arde remembered.

"One thing that influences us a lot on how we write is our solos," Chris interjected. "Most bands focus on their breakdown heavy parts, like in a mosh pit, but the way we write is to..."

"We build it up to the leads," Arde stepped in. "Instead of the breakdown being the main climax, we like the leads and then the breakdown would be more of the resolution. On Ubiquitous Pillar the high climax is the solo and then it goes into the last breakdown that ends it. It's more like the chill down part after the solo."

"Offspring of Time" ends with an instrumental masterpiece called "Tsar Bomb." It starts off with a quiet section that reminds me of Jimmy Buffett until about a minute in when Jimmy gets tossed into a technical death metal margarita blender.

It's not all about guitar solos," Arde insisted. "We're just trying to write something that will be remembered."

With “Offspring of Time”, Burning the Masses has certainly succeeded in creating something memorable. Look for them on tour and be prepared for another onslought with most of the tunes for the next record already well underway.

SAN FRANCISCO (WNM) -- One of the metalcore pioneers, As I Lay Dying is celebrating its tenth year as a band by expanding its horizons while remaining true to the original vision of the group.

"The vision has never changed," AILD's lead guitarist Nick Hipa told White Noise Metal's That BS Dude Brian Shields on the last night of headlining the Cool Tour with Underoath and Between the Buried and Me. "There's all sorts of styles of music, even with heavy music that we're all fans of, we're very confident of what As I Lay Dying is. We know that we are energetic and intense and kind of a brutal band yet we have a melody in a lot of parts. We just try to incorporate a lot of our outside influences with those boundaries. I'm not trying to say we just put ourselves in a narrow box to fit in but we never want to just focus on all of the things we're interested in on the side and neglect what As I Lay Dying is. We're trying to find that perfect medium between expanding while staying the same."

On White Noise Metal, Hipa and Shields discuss three songs off As I Lay Dying's newest record, "The Powerless Rise" starting with "Anodyne Sea."

"That is one of my favorite songs on the record because it includes a little bit of everything that we have done," Hipa said. "It's got the pummeling rhythm, the noodly kind of melodic riff, but then there's a little bit more there. There's a chorus but after that there's this post-chorus that incorporates some of the influences that him and I have which is a David Gillmor type or Bryan May type Queen harmony, something out of the old school but it still fits. We then tried to write a heavy part in the middle of that and just making it work."

Hipa says the band members were better prepared for this album having all worked on parts separately using pro-tools before first getting together to put the songs all together. Still some of the songs like "Anger and Apathy" needed some work in the studio.

"We had actually had to do a little more cutting for that song. Adam D of Killswitch (Engage) who produced our record, had helped to make the song a little bit more cohesive. It was longer with not as much chorus. He was taking on the persona of a very sleazy producer who was like, 'Don't bore us, get to the chorus' to try to make a song out of it. The end result is that is probably the most mellow, non-aggressive song on the record."

Hipa says "Condemned" came together in the old fashioned way with all of the band members together in the studio in collaboration.

Josh had the initial idea for it and we all just sat around and figured out where to go beyond the first 15 or 20 seconds of it. We threw in a solo section which obviously I'm always going to be a fan of. It's actually the first song I've ever recorded with a whammy bar. That's a song that we really enjoyed and was really cool but we didn't know if our fans would like it. The feedback we've been getting is that that's one of the favorite songs on the record."

There's a real progression to As I Lay Dying's work over the years but Hipa insists it's natural and not as a result of consciously saying they needed to make a heavier record.

"If you heard As I Lay Dying before and you never really liked it, just go and download the newest one because it might change your perspective because we've grown a lot and there's a lot more to the band these days so it might be a good cd to get re-introduced to the band."

White Noise Metal focuses on the music of some of the top names in metal. We've profiled such bands as Between the Buried and Me, Cynic, The Faceless, Gojira, Trivium, Shadows Fall, and more. The reports are available on YouTube, for podcast download in both video and audio formats at iTunes, and at www.whitenoisemetal.com

-30-

WHITE NOISE METAL - The first time you see a movie, you don't want to know in advance how it ends. Between the Buried and Me vocalist and keyboardist Tommy Rogers hopes you feel the same way before you listen to one of the North Carolina group's records for the first time.

BTBAM's newest release, The Great Misdirect, will be a surprise to some long-term fans of the band and Rogers is happy about that. In a wide-ranging conversation conducted both in San Francisco and in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, Rogers agrees with "White Noise Metal" host "That BS Dude" Brian Shields that "The Great Misdirect" is among the most ambitious works the band has ever done.

"When you listen to it there's a dark element," Rogers said. "I felt like "Colors" had a lot of uplifting moments. This record has a little bit of that but I think it's a darker record. I think the most exciting thing about the record is all the ups and downs. When I listen to it, it pumps me up because you're never really completely comfortable with one thing. You're always going all over the place. As we're getting older, I think we're becoming better songwriters. Granted, we are blending all of the genres, but it all flows into each other nicely. We spend probably too much time worrying about that."

Rogers says the first single off the record, Obfuscation, is more like "Colors" than anything else on "The Great Misdirect."

"That's where I got the title the Great Misdirect, actually," Rogers noted. "It's the last line in that song. It's basically just about the misdirection of our brains. The first two tracks of the record, Mirrors and Obfuscation, are kind of like one piece of music. It was basically just my weird fascination with the brain. It's such a confusing thing to me but it fascinates me. Everything from magicians to alien life to religion. Things that I don't think humans will ever understand but we constantly try to."

Shields and Rogers talk on White Noise Metal in detail about a number of songs on "The Great Misdirect" including "Desert of Song", and "Disease, Injury, Madness." Much of the podcast's focus is on the nearly 18 minute long closing track, "Swim to the Moon."

Rogers agrees with Shields' assertion that "Swim to the Moon" lyrically seems like a companion piece to "Colors"' "Sun of Nothing."

"It's kind of an awakening," BTBAM's singer said. "This story doesn't have an ending, yet maybe. I kind of left it open-ended in case I wanted to touch on it at some other point. It's about a businessman who needs something new in his life. He goes to the sea and basically floats and sees where it takes him. It gets him in a lot of trouble. It's kind of like "Sun of Nothing." It's his thought process evaluating everything he's done and everything he wants to do, what's important and what's not important. Because I think those are the kinds of things that I personally over the last few years have kind of looked into. There's so much shit that people worry about that really doesn't matter. There are only certain things that really make an impact on your life and others and I guess those stories are about figuring out what I need in my life."

Rogers says one of the goals for "Swim to the Moon" was to include a drum solo Blake Richardson had written before work on "The Great Misdirect" began.

"Probably for the last four or five years we've wanted to have a song with a big instrumental section but we've never really had a place for it or no song really called for it. This is the perfect song for it. It's very long, which we didn't intend for it to be that long but the ideas just kept happening. We kind of foreshadow some parts and bring some parts back around. It's a big rollercoaster ride. It came out pretty awesome and it's fun to play it live. That's one of the few songs that in the rehearsal room, it really kicked our ass. It took a while to get it ready to bring it on stage. It's gone over well and we've been playing it well on this tour."

Between the Buried and Me is now back from a headlining tour around the globe to go out in support of "Mastodon." Once the touring for "The Great Misdirect" ends, Rogers says the band will start thinking about how it will surprise the fans on the next record.

"White Noise Metal" with "That BS Dude" Brian Shields features interviews and profiles with some of the top names in the metal genre with a focus on specific songs. Previous episodes have spotlighted bands and their music including Cynic, Trivium, Shadows Fall, The Faceless, Gojira, and Corrosion of Conformity.

-30-
(WHITE NOISE METAL) -- Progressive metal fans of a certain age will remember Cynic as one of the founding members of the sub-genre in the early 90's. Now Cynic is back with a soon to be released EP following up on the 2008 album "Traced in Air."

On the last night of the band's 2010 tour with Between the Buried and Me in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cynic frontman Paul Masvidal sat down with White Noise Metal's "That BS Dude" Brian Shields to talk about the band and the progressive metal movement’s evolution.

"I'm kind of a folky," Masvidal said. "Generally all of the songs start on acoustic guitar with strong chord changes and a good melody. At the root of it I'm really just interested in a great song. It's always about subtraction to try to get to that. It's almost like an effective poem. You want to say just as much as you can with as little as possible. It's tricky to do that in the world of progressive music because it tends to do the opposite where you're more indulgent. We've always done it in a more concentrated way instead of the other extreme. It's about trying to keep it simple but engaging naturally in what we do as musicians stylistically."

Masvidal says the popularity of bands like Between the Buried and Me shows today's metal audiences are ready to accept diverse sounds.

"It's almost like a palate cleansing," Paul notes. "You have to just let go and it requires your attention. It requires energy. It's not background music. It's a different kind of aesthetic from what it attracts audience-wise, and it's probably a smaller percentage of the general public but the rewards are much greater when you give yourself the time to appreciate this kind of music. It bears so many gifts if you just surrender to it and really give it some energy and give it some time."

On the White Noise Metal video podcast, Paul and Brian talk about three songs off of "Traced in Air": "The Space for This", "Evolutionary Sleeper", and "Adam's Murmur." Masvidal says all of the songs on the record trace both his musical and spiritual journeys through the years.

"I think it's pretty much the whole deal for me," the singer/guitarist said. "I had a teacher who encouraged me to go deeper down the path. What was curious was getting turned on to people like John McLaughlin who was marrying these worlds. I got really into Mahavishnu Orchestra. I was like 'Wow, it doesn't have to be separate. I don't have to be this rock and roll musician and the dude who meditates. They can merge and co-exist. They always have and I didn't realize it. I feel it's the duty of the artist to push the envelope and give back, to put up the mirror and just say 'who are we and what's happening here?' To do it in a way that's loving and compassionate instead of just hitting you over the head."

Masvidal says he values being able to share his experiences with musical audiences.

"I'm grateful to be a musician," he said. "I feel lucky that I found this early on and it made a lot of sense to me as something that resonated on multiple levels and that my parents were cool enough to push me and say, 'if you really want to do this we'll get you lessons and you had better get to work and practice.' I was loving it. It made a difference for me in this sense of I wasn't fighting a system. I wasn't trying to prove a point. I wasn't going against anyone. I certainly had my dark moments and periods but they were more my own stuff versus what was going on out there."

"White Noise Metal" with "That BS Dude Brian Shields" features interviews and profiles with some of the top names in the genre. Previous episodes have spotlighted bands ranging from Trivium to Shadows Fall to The Faceless to Gojira to Corrosion of Conformity.
(WHITE NOISE METAL) – Agree or disagree, when you listen to a Trivium song, you’re going to get a message with a strong viewpoint. The band’s lead singer and guitarist Matt Heafy makes no apologies for that.

In a wide-ranging discussion about the lyrics on all four Trivium studio albums, Heafy tells White Noise Metal’s “That BS Dude” Brian Shields he wants fans to know what he’s thinking about the world. One example comes on the song “Detonation” off the album “The Crusade”

“I wanted to go into socio-politics, what people are going through,” Heafy says. “I wanted to make it angry. Sometimes it is a little easier to make it a little more eloquent, a little more thought out and people respect it more. I wanted to make something that was pissed off. This country was supposed to be a place that was founded on living a different belief outside everyone else’s. I wanted to show my views. Sometimes we might have fans that disagree with mine and might not like what I have to say, and maybe some people come from the school of thought that you don’t discuss what your beliefs are but my thing is if we’re not completely honest in this, then what’s the point? So I wanted it to be very overtly what I’m for.”

From the band’s start with “Ember to Inferno”, Heafy says Trivium has been very clear about where it wants to go.

“Every record we’ve had, the album titles have been directly reflective of what we’ve had going on as a band at that time,” Heafy adds. “The idea was to go from that nothingness to something special. We didn’t know when or how or if but we knew we wanted it. It was our goal. That’s what the song was about. It was about creating that vision of ourselves and to really go for it.”

On Trivium’s breakout album “Ascendancy, “ Heafy tackled the issue of domestic violence on the song “A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation”, a song he hopes will make some people feel less alone.

“I’ve actually had a lot of people who said, ‘Thanks to that song, I was able to read it and realize I’m not the only one and it helped me get through this.’ I’ve always preferred that people I cared about could put the burden off on me.”

On “The Crusade”, Heafy tells White Noise Metal he allowed his social viewpoints free rein with songs focusing on bigotry, homophobia, sexism, racism, and more, not your typical subjects for a heavy metal song.

“I never hear it so that’s why I do it,” Heafy tells Shields. “I did get criticized by some of the people, not in our band but in our team, the industry people, saying you don’t need to come out this much about it but I said, ‘Why not?’ Everyone else gets to say how they’re so against it whether it be religions or political groups or whatever it is. I wanted to tackle everything.”

Heafy says true Trivium fans appreciate that strong viewpoint.

“I think what that record did was weed out the people who were only into us because we were one of those trendy bands,” he adds. “It showed the people early that we’re going to do anything, that we’re not afraid to do the opposite of what we normally do. I think we definitely lost some people and I don’t know if they ever came back. But if you’re going to hate our band just because we try something musically, you were never really in to us in the first place. What people should want from their bands is a band that’s always being true to themselves and that record was as true as it could get.”

On the most recent release, “Shogun”, Trivium steps away from current politics and looks at history. Heafy says he gets inspiration from his personal life, what’s going on in the band, what’s going on in the world, or anything that speaks to him. He tells Shields you can often find him spending a lot of time on the road going to art museums.

“Lately I’ve been getting into modern and contemporary art,” he tells White Noise Metal. “I got to go to the Tate Modern in London. It’s this old factory converted into modern and contemporary art. I really like that because it’s their interpretation of what art should be. They don’t follow the rules they just do what they like and I really like that a lot. That’s the way I like to do music. I don’t have formal training. I don’t know music theory. I can’t read music on guitar. I’ve thought about teaching myself but then I thought I might be giving myself too many rules. So I would rather just make my own rules and go with it.”

Trivium has a new song coming out on the “Gods of War III” video game with 30 songs already written for the next studio album.

“It’s really great, the lyrics, the song title, the brutality, and you can really see what we’ve learned from every single record going into the next one.”

"White Noise Metal" focuses on the music produced by some of metal's biggest names.

On first blush, you might not find a lot in common between the frenzy of a show featuring the technical death metal of The Faceless and the quiet ambiance of a fusion jazz club but the two are far more similar than they might seem.

On the latest episode of the "White Noise Metal" video podcast, The Faceless' lead guitarist Michael Keene tells "That BS Dude Brian Shields" he draws a lot of his inspiration from the jazz he grew up listening to.

"I've borrowed from a lot of guitarists that I admire but maybe I package it in a way that's unrecognizable," Keene says. "My favorite guitarist is Allan Holdworth. I didn't grow up listening to too many metal guitarists. I grew up in a house where both my parents were musicians. My dad was a fusion guitar player so I grew up around all that kind of stuff."

The Encino, California band is developing a growing reputation among technical death metal acts through their first two releases, 2006's "Akeldama" and the 2008 release "Planetary Duality." Keene says the song "An Autopsy" off the first CD helped the band define their sound.

"I think that was the first song that we ever wrote that defined a pretty distinct direction for our band," Keene tells Shields. "I think the three or four songs prior to that that we had written, we were still trying to figure out what we were doing and who we were as a band. Actually a couple of those songs are on the first album and you can kind of tell because they don't sound like the rest of it. I think from there on out is where we developed a more focused sound. It's to this day still a crowd favorite. When the first CD came out that was the big popular song."

On "Planetary Duality," The Faceless fuses the lyrical power with Keene's stylistic guitar playing on the song "XenoChrist."

"That one just came together really well," the guitarist said. "It's got a lot of different moods and vibes and ups and downs. It's one of the more technical songs. One of the more ripping songs. That song took shape in a way where it had a very distinct characteristic. The lyrical content played off of it really well. It's probably my favorite song on the CD."

"Planetary Duality" has not one but two title tracks. Keene says the first song was originally just supposed to be an intro riff.

"It was later decided to divide them up," Keene notes I think with the lyrical content and the theme of the two tracks, we made a concious decision to let them play off the two vibes of the song. The second half of the track is very choatic and frantic and has this panicky overwhelming feeling to it. The lyrics are kind of explosive. 'When everything comes to a head and infinite dimensions cross paths to recreate reality.'"

Keene lists "Noctambulant" by "Spawn of Possession" as an influence on the song "Ancient Covenant." In "White Noise Metal"'s famous segment "Shit We Like," Keene lists some of the other music you'll find playing as The Faceless launches its "Planetary Depravity" co-headlining tour.

"As far as new stuff, we're all big on the new Obscura album," Keene says. "That's been in frequent rotation. The new "Psycroptic" album is really good too. We listen to a little bit of everything. We don't just listen to metal exclusively by any means. You'll find us listening to a lot of prog stuff, a lot of fusion and rock and a little bit of everything."

SAN FRANCISCO (WHITE NOISE METAL) – In a changing world, Shadows Fall frontman Brian Fair knows you have to be proactive about making change work for you. In the band’s second appearance on the White Noise Metal Video Podcast, Fair tells host “That BS Dude, Brian Shields” Shadows Fall is embracing that change from the way the band members write music to the way they get their creative product out to their unique fan base.

Fair says taking responsibility for making things change is the theme of the first single off the new album “Retribution” called “Still I Rise.”

" Lyrically, it's a song about channeling inner strength and rejecting the idea that a lot of people will project perfection on something they think is unattainable,” Fair said. “The first line, 'Stop Searching the Sky for Answers and Look Within', instead of always putting things in the hands of a god or a higher power, realizing the power's within you and it's also your responsibility. If you want things to change, you can't just pray for change, you have to create change. It's not a knock on anyone's spiritual beliefs or religion but it's about not using that as an excuse or as an escape route but using it to inspire you. That's a problem I've always had with a dogmatic approach to religion. If you just want to read the rules and think at the end of the day I'll be fine because I did everything I was supposed to but if you don't do anything to help the world, that's kind of missing the point. It's also to know that when things seem the bleakest, to know you have the power inside you to make a change."

“Retribution” marks a change in approach for Shadows Fall who are coming off the Atlantic release “Threads of Life.”

“It's definitely a darker, more aggressive record than the last one,” Fair added. “There's still a lot of melody, it's always a big part of our sound. But this record is a little more up-tempo, more thrash beats. I think of a lot of it is the way we wrote. We wrote a lot of stuff altogether in the practice space, full volume, at once as opposed to trading CD'. I think that playing it altogether loud kicked it up a notch in intensity. A lot of the transitions were worked out on the spot as we jammed so you got a lot of the technical side of it there too. We're really excited. We think it's the perfect balance of all of our influences from old style classic metal, the Priest and the Maiden influences that we'll always have, through the melodic death metal like At the Gates, to everything we've ever done.”

Fair tells White Noise Metal the decision to write together in the practice space made the songs on “Retribution” instantly ready for live performances. On the podcast, he talks in detail about “Still I Rise” and “Public Execution” which he describes as the most brutal tune on the release.

“We've never had a curse on a record before. So we thought let's just chant 'fuck.' It just fit the energy of the song. It's sort of a song about anger and energy but it's unfocused. Just revolution for the sake of it but you don't really know what you're railing against. That kind of happens sometimes in aggressive music, especially in classic thrash where you have some lyrics that inspired you do something they just didn't tell you what. It's a tongue-in-cheek approach to that but at the same time using the same ways they get you to sing along. What better sing along to have than just 'Fuck it All.' I think it's also an attitude that a lot of people can embrace in this day and age when everything's just such a mess, you just throw your hands up in the air."

Brian Fair and Shadows Fall certainly aren’t throwing their hands up in the air when it comes to the changing face of the music industry. After that one record with Atlantic, the Shads have decided to create their own record label and maintain total control over the relationship they have with their fans.

“Major labels are kind of in a panic about record sales and doing things the way they used to,” Fair told White Noise Metal. “So we decided to be proactive about it. Let's change the business model. We still use a major label, Warner Music, as a distributor so they can get us into retail and open those doors we wouldn't be able to do on our own. They hire Ferret music out of that to do the everyday promotions, a DIY thinking label that understands a band like us from the ground up. We make the final decision about everything. We know the bottom line is no longer about helping the record label, it's about helping us because we're the bottom line."

Fair says it’s silly to stay on a sinking ship just because that’s the way the industry has always worked.

"It's about taking the power back,” the Shadows Fall singer added. “It's about flipping the grid where instead of everyone else getting paid and we get the trickle down royalties in the end, we flipped it so that now it gives you a motivation to work harder. Yes, it is more work running your own label but it's worth it in the end, especially to go from 10-to-12 percent to 70-to-80 percent, big difference."

Fair says Shadows Fall knows its audience better than someone sitting in a record company office. While touring in support of “Retribution” the singer is talking daily with fans on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The band also has set up its own social networking site using the Ning platform.

"On this tour, I'm going to give a secret password on Twitter with something random,” Fair said. “So if you come to the merch table and say this, you're going to get free something. If we have guest list spots, I'm going to give them away on Twitter. We're going to use it as a way to talk to people. It may be something as simple as if you meet me at 7:00 tomorrow, I'll buy you a shot of Jägermeister if you have a valid ID. It's cool. All of the tools are out there because it's getting tough to survive as a band in the traditional ways if you don't find a way to make it work."

So what will you find in Brian Fair’s mp3 player these days? In White Noise Metal’s famous segment called “Shit We Like”, the Shadows Fall frontman says he’s been listening to a lot of instrumental music lately.

“One band is Russian Circles. I really love their record “Station.” It will start really minimalistic with these guitar riffs and it will build to these huge riffs. It's sick. Maybe I listen to a lot of instrumental music because I'm a singer so I'm sick of people yelling at me. That's one band people should definitely check out."
