Bryant Gardens Gets Beautification Award

The White Plains Beautification Foundation will present the Bryant Gardens Cooperative with its 2009 Neighborhood Beautification Award at its November meeting.

Writing to Bryant Gardens Property Manager Robert Orlofsky, White Plains Beautification Foundation President Mary R. Merenda says the “lovely gardens this year” at Bryant Gardens enhance the City of White Plains, helping to make it a “city within a garden.” She will present the Award on Monday, November 16, 2009 at a meeting in the White Plains Public Library, Room B, 2nd Floor, at 12:30 pm.

Bryant Gardens Board of Directors President Gaierose Haskel points to a long-term commitment to beautification that began over two decades ago when Mr. Orlofsky began as Property Manager. Supported by the Board and assisted throughout by Head Gardener Tony Garrido, Mr. Orlofsky has directed the plantings and improvements, garnering earlier awards in 1991 and 1998

According to Ms. Haskel, this latest award is yet another “tribute to the vision and direction” of Mr. Orlofsky.

The White Plains Beautification Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable organization comprised entirely of volunteers. One of the Foundation's goals is to have people think of White Plains not just as a major business and shopping center, but as "A City in the Park."

ASA Philadelphia Sponsors Multidisciplinary Appraisers Roundtable

White Plains Common Council Member Rita Malmud will be the featured guest speaker at the November meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations. Continuing WPCNA's Leadership in Governance series, Ms. Malmud will discuss Leadership in the City.

The November meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) will introduce Captain David R. Burpee of the White Plains Department of Public Safety, who will discuss the Neighborhood Watch and Tip411 programs. Then Common Council Member Rita Malmud will explore Leadership in the City from the perspective of her unique legislative style. The meeting will be held at Education House at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Ms. Malmud has been a member of the White Plains Common Council since 1990. Before her election, she was president of the Westchester County League of Women Voters, and president of the White Plains League before that. As a Council Member, Ms. Malmud is widely respected both for her thoughtful analyses and her gracious respect for differing opinions. Original Mopar NOS items include an Edelbrock street torker intake plate, mint still in the original Mopar box; Several big block crankshafts still in original boxes, lamps, lenses, engine parts and more. Many good used hard to find parts including a 1957-58 392 dual quad intake and early 1960's 413 dual quad intake complete with carburetors. Also several big block heads and exhaust manifolds.

Saved from parts cars and stored. 1968 & 1969 Charger rally dash clusters, complete dashes, steering columns, glass, chrome trim molding, rally wheels, doors, hoods, including scooped hoods, trunk lids, including 1968 GTX lid with finish panel, bumpers including several re-chromed bumpers still in 1970's packing, brake drums, steering boxes and more.

To be sold as one lot. 1969 Dodge Daytona, used original front nose cutoff with headlamp assemblies, braces and brackets, complete rear wing set including mounts and brackets, as well as the Daytona rear window plug with the original back glass. This package along with the Daytona fender tag, registration and the car's history will all be sold as one lot.

Also to be sold separately. 1969 Fin as well as a 1968 Charger R/T with restoration started.

Non-Mopar. Some of the non-Mopar items include re-chromed GM bumpers and a GTO floor shift console with a tachometer.

White Plains Mayoral Candidates, Adam Bradley and Glen Hockley, will debate at the October meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations. The Debate, moderated by White Plains Times Publisher Pat Casey, will be followed by a networking reception for local Westchester and Common Council candidates.

Adam Bradley, Assemblyman for New York's 89th District, and Glen Hockley, White Plains Common Council Member, will take part in a Mayoral debate at the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) at its October meeting. The candidates will field questions submitted in advance by WPCNA members. They will be joined afterward for a meet and greet with voters by Bill Ryan and Bob Hyland, vying for County Legislator, and Thomas Roach, James Arndt, Dave Buchwald, Leonard Lolis, and Beth Smayda, competing for three open seats on the White Plains Common Council. The meeting will be held at Education House at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

Adam Bradley represents the 89th Assembly District spanning eastern Westchester south from Lewisboro through White Plains and Harrison. In the Assembly, he chairs the Subcommittee on Oversight of the Department of Environmental Conservation, and serves on the Committees on Children and Families, Election Law, Environmental Conservation, Foster Care, Insurance, Judiciary, and Veterans' Affairs. A Westchester native, Adam received his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees from Pace University and served as an Assistant County Attorney in Westchester County, where he practices family law. He describes himself as "committed to ensuring every New Yorker has a clean, safe environment to live in, an opportunity to receive a quality education, and employment in a safe work place." Mr. Bradley enjoys the endorsement of the Democratic, Republican, Conservative and Working Families parties.

Glen Hockley has been a Common Council Member since 2001 and serves on its Budget & Management, Open Space Acquisition, and Capital Projects Committees. He has initiated or sponsored legislation to establish Citizens to Be Heard, Bark Park, Flag Day in White Plains, the Safe Housing Task Force, and the Juneteenth Heritage Parade and Festival. Other initiatives include the Grant Writer and Apprenticeship bills, and the YMCA Housing initiative. A White Plains Rotarian, he sits on Advisory Boards for the Schnurmacher Nursing Home, Kids XPress Magazine, and the Hudson Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He says property taxes, economic development, transparency, affordable housing, and overcrowded housing are foremost among his priorities. Mr. Hockley, who formed People Over Politics Party, an independent party, has the support of the local police and fire unions, and the local Civil Service Employees Association.

New Book Explores Oyster Bay (LI) in Vintage Photos

Town Historian John E. Hammond’s latest book, Oyster Bay: Images of America, brings late 19th and early 20th century Oyster Bay to life through period photographs and captivating captions.

Oyster Bay native John Hammond is probably best known to residents of the historic North Shore Long Island hamlet as the readable raconteur who for many years penned the “Village Views” column for the Oyster Bay Guardian newspaper. His new, fifth book, Oyster Bay: Images of America (softcover, 128 pages, Arcadia Publishing. $21.99) won’t disappoint Guardian readers or those who admire him as Town Historian.

Oyster Bay uses photographs from the author’s collection and from the Oyster Bay Historical Society, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, and private collections to depict turn of the century life in the hamlet Teddy Roosevelt put on the map.

The book, which includes chapters on Village Life, Theodore Roosevelt, Schools and Churches, and the Gold Coast, has over 200 vintage images. Among them are photos of Typhoid Mary’s home, the setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and the volunteer fire companies organized in 1888 and1890.

Oyster Bay is available now at booksellers, and online in the Bookstore of the Oyster Bay Historical Society. The author will sign copies on Saturday, September 12 at 1:00 pm at the Matinecock Masonic Historical Society, 14 West Main St, Oyster Bay, and on Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 pm at the Borders bookstore in Syosset.

A portion of the proceeds of the book’s sales will go to the Angela P. Koenig Research and Collections Center Building Fund of the Oyster Bay Historical Society, and will be eligible under the Dolan Foundation’s Matching Grant.

The author is a Trustee of the Oyster Bay Historical Society, a Friend of Sagamore Hill, and Historian of the Matinecock Masonic Historical Society. He is a graduate of the University of the State of New York and the Institute of Far Eastern Languages at Yale.

White Plains Superintendent of Schools Christopher Clouet and New York State Assemblyman Adam Bradley will be the guest speakers at the September meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations. In the second of WPCNA's Leadership in Governance series, Dr. Clouet will talk about Leadership in Education; Mr. Bradley will discuss Leadership in Legislation.

Christopher Clouet, who took over as Superintendent of Schools on July 1, and Adam Bradley, Assemblyman for New York's 89th District, and White Plains Mayoral Candidate, will address the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) at its September meeting. Congresswoman Nita Lowey to Address White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations

U.S. Representative Nita M. Lowey will be the guest speaker at the August meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations. She will inaugurate the WPCNA's Leadership in Governance series, and participate in a structured Q&A session. Bill Ryan, Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, will introduce her.

U.S. Representative for the 18th Congressional District, the Honorable Nita M. Lowey, will address the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) at its August meeting. Ms. Lowey, who chairs the prominent Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, will talk about her personal leadership style, and respond to questions submitted by the delegates. The meeting will be held at Education House at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Admission is free and all White Plains residents are invited.

Ms. Lowey, whose district includes most of Westchester and part of Rockland County, was the first woman to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. In addition to her Appropriations Subcommittee, she serves on the Subcommittee on Labor (Health and Human Services, and Education); the Subcommittee on Homeland Security; and the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel.

Large Estate Auction in Skaneateles, NY

Some notable items are an elaborately carved mahogany Partner's Desk by R.J. Horner & Co. with Northwind faces, large gargoyles and claw feet; half-plate and quarter-plate Daguerreotypes, and quarter-plate Ambrotypes; an oil on canvas Winter Scene by Frank A. Barney (1862-1954) and an oil painting by Fernando A. The Bryant Gardens Cooperative in White Plains, NY will hold its first ever Country Fair on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm -- rain or shine -- at the Playground between 3 and 5 Bryant Crescent.

The Bryant Gardens Board of Directors invites residents, guests and its White Plains neighbors to take part in the Country Fair featuring Arts & Crafts, a Small Biz Expo, Snazzy Wheels Show, Funtime Amusements for youngsters, and a Verizon FiOS raffle for a FREE flat screen TV.

Continuing the co-op's emphasis on Going Green, the Fair will include a visit by the Westchester County Veggie Van to promote energy awareness in children. Con Edison education specialists will talk with homeowners about saving money by saving energy. And residents will have coupons to exchange incandescent light bulbs for energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

Members of our new Caring and Sharing Community will discuss aging in place, book, dining, walking and theater groups, and neighbor-to-neighbor outreach. Residents can join at the Fair.

Theodore B. Starr, of Black, Starr & Frost, was an active jeweler and silversmith from 1865 until his shop closed in 1924. A collection bearing his mark descended in his family and is being sold in this auction by a granddaughter. Another collection of Russian silver enamel is from a Scranton Pennsylvania Estate.

In the auction are over 400 lots of sterling, including American .900, European .800 silver and Mexican sterling. There are sets of sterling flatware including Poppy, King Albert, and Madam Jumel and a variety of trays, bowls, and serving items. Look for dozens of souvenir spoons, mostly native American Indians, but also two Salem Witch spoons by Low. Makers including Tiffany, Cartier, Towle, Whiting, Asa Munger, Dominick & Haff, S. Kirk and Shiebler are represented in unusual boxes and cigarette cases, mirrors, dresser items and English pieces from 1751. The Russian items include kovshs, boxes, eggs, napkin rings, perfumes, a cup, saucer and pitcher set, icons with silver covers, a 16-panel brass icon, and wooden icons.

Milagros Lecuona, White Plains Common Council Member and Architect, will be the guest speaker at the June meeting of the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations. She will talk about Urban Planning and Sustainability

White Plains, NY. June 4, 2008. Milagros Lecuona, Project Manager and Designer for Peter Gisolfi Associates, the Hastings-on-Hudson architectural firm, and White Plains Common Council Member, will address the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) at its June meeting. Ms. Lecuona, who previously served on the Westchester County Planning Board, will discuss Urban Planning and Sustainability. The meeting will be held at Education House at 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, NY at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. Admission is free and audience participation is encouraged.

Ms. Lecuona says the Renaissance of downtown White Plains coupled with the changing diversity of the population has created "new challenges for the infrastructure and for the health and safety of the residents" and thus challenges for its leaders. For her part, she believes the way to handle challenges is through "D.D.E.E.," which stands for Development, Diversity, Environment and Education. An outspoken advocate of transparency in government and applied technology in architecture, she says "Technology is something that is really governing our lives ... I want to make sure technology and green building design are part of our normal way of working in White Plains."

A native of Spain, where she took her BA/MA in Urban Planning at the University of Barcelona's School of Architecture, Milagros settled in White Plains in 1989, joining Peter Gisolfi Associates in 1999. At Gisolfi she has designed and/or managed major projects for Yale University, the Hastings-on-Hudson and Peekskill School Districts. In 2005, she established Lecuona Associates, her own woman-owned minority firm providing architectural services.

Active since coming to White Plains in civic, cultural, and women's organizations, she is the founder of La Casa de La Cultura, which promotes cultural development and diversity in Westchester. In addition to serving on the County Planning Board, Milagros served on the White Plains Cable Television Commission, and on the Boards of Museic, the choral group, the Westchester Hispanic Coalition, and the Westchester Red Cross.

Ms. Lecuona will take questions after her talk, which is sure to draw a full-capacity crowd. Come early to get a good seat!

Binghamton, NY May 28, 2009. Bob & Sallie Connelly will conduct a major auction of military items, medals, period photographs and ivory at the Showplace on Saturday, May 30, 2009 starting at 5:00 pm. Robert J. Connelly -- who prefers plain "Bob" -- is an internationally recognized appraiser and auctioneer, who with wife and business partner Sallie, sell antiques, conduct auctions, and do appraisals of real estate and personal property ranging from sports memorabilia to classic cars.
