We have been remiss in updating this Blog about the amazing progress our Quilt is making under the watchful eye of Bev Crouse as many White Pointers continue to add their stitches.

This past month in addition to the golf, beach, pool and bunny blocks, Bev introduced us to the Cottages and, on April 28th, the historic 1928 Main Lodge Block. This historic block is so close to the original design, it almost looks like a painting we have on the wall back here at White point – resemblance is amazing! We are so proud of the work and integrity that Bev has brought forward to this project and so very thankful to have her working with us to realize this dream. Be sure to check out Bev’s online Quilt Shop too call The Quilters Net!

We’ve taken the Quilt on the road many times recently too.
April 28:We hosted a Quilting Party at the Liverpool Firemens Breakfast where the kids (young and old alike) made bunny patches and added their stitches to several of our panels – including the beachstone fireplace block that will be a focal point of the new quilt.

April 29:Guests at Saltscapes Expo stepped up willingly to add their stitches to our blocks as they shared their memories. Several people said adding their stitches was the main reason they came to the Expo – we were so delighted to have so many people participate. Bev again was fabulous and patient as everyone added their own touch to the blocks.

May 3: Golf Club Members attending their members meeting added their own stitches to, yes, the Golf Block!

And we’re not done! We are hitting the road to host a Quilting Party with the Queens Quilters on May 24, hoping to share our quilting story at the national Quilting Conference in Halifax May 31. From June 21 – 24, we’ll be hosting a Quilting Party in Toronto as we participate in the Saltscapes Expo on the waterfront. In between we hope to get to a few schools, add in a few more Parties in and around Nova Scotia too – whew…many stitches to be added yet!

Here are a few pictures from our past months adventures!

Robert Risley, the owner of White Point who has been so committed to rebuilding our Main Lodge, selected a stone from a collection that we pulled from the original 1928 foundation just days after the fire – the perfect stone, to be placed within the new foundation.

The stone, needing to be the just the right size so as not to interfere with the integrity of the foundation, was selected by Robert. Soiled from the fire, the perfect stone had some concrete from the original assembly attached to it as well. We have marveled at the workmanship and ingenuityof the original builders – incorporating existing boulders and beachstones into foundation walls. It is fitting that one of the beachstones they would have hand selected, and placed within the original foundation – with some of the concrete would have mixed likely by hand as well – would find it’s way into our new foundation.

If only those stones could talk! Actually they are -within our new foundation and they will continue to. Remember -83 of the fireplace stones live on within homes and gardens of White Pointers thanks to thier support of our Liverpool Volunteer Fire Department over Christmas 2011.

Timing is everything, and with Robert onsite May 11, we were able to add this commemorative foundation stone, to the foundation directly below the dining room.

In the years to come, we invite you to think about this stone as you take a seat in our new dining room. As you settle in, and look out over the Atlantic Ocean, be sure to raise a glass to this 1928 foundation stone – toast the 83 years of memories it holds and to decades more that we will create and enjoy in the many, many years to come!

This, indeed, was a great day at White Point!
xo
The White Point Team

White Point Main Lodge, Conceptual Design (Opening Nov 2012)

Since breaking ground on April 12, 2012, the construction of the Main Lodge has been steady, exciting and engaging – with 000′s of White Pointer’s taking it all in on our Construction Webcam and chatting with us on Facebook and Twitter. At Saltscapes Expo in Halifax, April 27-29, we were overwhelmed by the positive feedback on the design of our Lodge and the sneak peek of the interiors.

On February 14 our Nova Scotia Design Team led by WHW Architects revealed the conceptual designs for our Main Lodge. Now, as the foundation is being poured and we approch 6 months since our fire, we are extremely excited to introduce you to the conceptual design renderings for the interiors of our new Main Lodge.

NOTICE: The following are artist renderings of the conceptual design. The images are not 3D, however they attempt to illustrate depth, layout, colour themes and design features that will be present in the Main Lodge to give you a feel for what we are striving to achieve. Similarly, the form and scale of features may change between what you see here and the completed version when we open. To better appreciate the following, you may want to reacquaint yourself with the new Main Lodge floor plan.

Drawing inspiration from our rich tradition, history and connection to our beachside location, the design and treatments capture the essence of White Point. Melissa Cummings and Keri Kosh of Design 360 have spent a great deal of time reflecting on the textures, feel and tone of the old Main Lodge to ensure the new lodge interiors would be familiar to White Pointers while welcoming to new guests. To achieve such, they have incorporated natural and reclaimed materials where possible, from the exposed wood to the stone fireplaces, the design is very reminiscent of the old lodge. Of course there are many beloved elements that had to be included, without question!

Welcome
You’ve arrived, welcome to White Point! Upon entering the Main Lodge, the heart of White Point, you are rewarded with an open, clearly unobstructed view to the beautiful scenery beyond – to the Atlantic Ocean. The lounge is flanked on both sides with double-sided wood burning fireplaces clad in beach stone. These key focal points are reminiscent of the old lodge and again, will offer White Point guests the chance to relax and enjoy a fireside chat.

Main Lobby
Here’s where you Check-In, get oriented, pick up your bunny food and embark on your White Point stay. The introduction of natural materials emphasize the strong connection to the site, architecture and history of White Point. The exterior cladding materials on the outside of the lodge will carry on into the Lobby as a seamless transition. The use of reclaimed wood on the ceiling, walls and reception desk (as was present in the old) are meant to create a warm contrast against a natural beachtoned floors. Swiss batten wood siding used on the exterior, clad the walls in the lobby and reclaimed wood is pieced together to represent a patchwork quilt texture on the face of the main desk.

Lounge
Our Lounge is back and many will likely say, better! The lounge bar has always been an area for White Point guests to relax and unwind, enjoy live entertainment and beautiful scenery – and it will again in the new Lodge. With two beachstone fireplaces flanking this lounge, the crackling wood fire will once again fill the air with the smell of wood smoke and be the perfect backdrop for many more family photos! The wood trellis featured over the bar is an extension of the exterior trellis over the patio giving the space an umbrella effect, creating an intimate and cozy, oceanside setting. A variety of lounge and dining seating and tables will surround the bar area and offer guests a place to get together with friends in a comfortable and casual atmosphere. Of course the deck off the Lounge, will be a favourite for year-round surf watching, dining and just ‘being’.

Main Corridor – heading to Meeting/Conference Rooms
While it may not be really exciting when you think of it as a hallway, but what it leads to and the treatments are! The main corridor leads to the meeting rooms, business centre, gift shop and washrooms. It’s walls will be adorned with old and new photos collaged together to tell our 83 year old Story - our history as we greet our future (you may even find our new White Point Quilt that we are stitching together with White Pointers here too!). As guests approach the entrances to the meeting rooms the antique style doors will be highlighted with reclaimed wood surrounds flanked by black iron wall sconces. The irregular wood slat ceiling with lantern light fixtures are meant to cast shadows upon the walls and create visual, dramatic texture.

Dining Room
The Dining Room has been as much about the oceanviews as it has been about the meals! With two walls of windows, the oceanview seating has increased and of course, the layout of the seating optimize the views – for everyone! The space itself will continue to offer White Point guests a family oriented, ‘come as you are’ dining experience with South Shore hospitality and flavor. The natural, beach toned concrete floor provides a backdrop for the reclaimed wood folding screens featured throughout the space. Colors found in the architecture of surrounding communities will be represented on the traditional style wood chairs. The buffet will be highlighted with a wood trellis overhead and a textured wood face reminiscent of an old weathered wood barn. The exposed structure complemented with colorful murals above surround the bulkhead throughout the double height structure and offer White Pointers a look back at White Point memories. One of the interesting features are the retractable walls that will provide a bit more dining privacy when desired – or completely invisible when retracted!

Dining Room Bar Area
The Dining Room will now include a fireplace where guests can sit by the fire in a comfortable over scale wing back chair or simply enjoy a drink at the restaurant bar. The wood burning fireplace clad in beach stone will be a focal point and invite guests to relax while waiting to be seated or an opportunity to enjoy an after dinner drink. The basket style light fixtures highlighting the seating area are collaged together to create texture and provide a soft warm glow against the beach stone fireplace.

Meeting Room/Conference Centre
The neutral palette featured in this space will compliment the stunning oceanviews offered from this vantage point. The views have been and will definitely continue to be featured as expansive windows are a part of the meeting room. The strong herringbone pattern found in the carpet tile is reminiscent of an old wood plank floor and pays respect to the pattern of the exterior cladding of the lodge. The wood burning fireplace textured with beach stones creates a strong focal point. Black metal ‘i’ beams provide contrast against the warm pecan wood decorative trim elements creating a beautiful backdrop for hosting meetings and special events.
The Meeting Room/Conference Centre is divisible into three separate meeting rooms (one with a fireplace), enabling the flexibility of accommodating 1 – 3 meeting spaces within this one room. With access to an oceanside deck, the flexibility of this space is exciting.

Pool
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the indoor pool is an extension of the beach. The pool deck is clad in a natural slate mosaic tile reminiscent of the tones found in the beach rocks and works as a neutral backdrop against the cool blue pool water. The neutral palette is balanced with pops of fun colors as seen in the pool furniture and signature White Point water umbrella. The corner hot tub offers White Point guests a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Off the pool deck is the Sauna and change rooms while around the corner is the Fitness Centre, Games Room, Kids Zone and access to the beach.

The same tones, textures and features are applied throughout the Ocean Spa, the Guest Rooms and other public spaces.

Well, that concludes the interior conceptual design tour – hope you enjoyed it as much as we have. While we know these are only pictures, we here at White Point are delighted with the feeling of comfort, warmth and well, the overall White Pointish touches we have always enjoyed!

We are definitely looking forward to welcoming White Pointers back to the beach – for even more great days in the Fall!

While we undertake this construtcion, White Point’s 13 Vacation Homes and Cottages remain open and available for guests to enjoy our area. The Golf Course is open for the season, the Surf Shop will be open in July & August and there is always plenty to explore in and around the South Shore.

With more than 300 events hosted annually at White Point, our Event Services Team are definitely looking forward to getting back to hosting events in our amazing new spaces in the Lodge. What has been incredibly encouraging since our fire, are the number of calls and bookings being made for Fall 2012 when we reopen and well beyond! We’re busy planning retreats, reunions, corporate meetings, association conferences and yes, weddings.

When we reopen, in addition to Lakeside Hall, in the new Main Lodge we’ll continue having our main event room (just like our former Atlantic Conference Centre) which overlooks the ocean and beach, not to worry! This time around though, the space will be able to be split into 3 rooms, which will mean more flexibility when planning events. Plus we’ll have a mezzanine level meeting room with views of the tidal river on one side and the ocean on the other! The new Lodge will also boast a lot more windows with oceanfront view planes from the Dining Room too – and all South facing, imagine the sunsets we’ll be enjoying.

Over the past month, while the design details were being worked on, we’ve been reviewing and have created NEW Banquet and Great Day Meetings Menus. Though you will still find old favourites like Cedar Planked Salmon and Top Sirloin of Beef, Chef Alan Crosby has included options like Chicken Scallopini with Peppered Edam and Tomato Fennel Sauce, Lobster Risotto Croquettes with Tomato Concasse and Tarragon Aioli and Grilled Polenta with Shitake and Crimini Mushroom Ragu, Roasted Shallots, and Oven Dried Tomatoes and Shaved Parmesan (*sigh* hungry yet?). Plus based on feedback received in the past, we’ve introduced more options, like choosing the salads and platters on your buffet dinner, or choosing your own working lunch inclusions. Don’t worry, we’ve kept our popular “Maritimer” working lunch, featuring fish cakes, sausage and sauerkraut (a South Shore treat for sure!), and expanded our menu to include Kids’ Stuff and Boxed Lunches.

New in our line-up as well is our Executive Meal Plan Package. Enjoy making your own selections from our Dining Room Menus, themed coffee breaks, infused water in your meeting room and a welcome cocktail on arrival. Of course, the beachside Bonfires are included for every gathering!

We can’t wait to welcome you back to White Point! Let’s get the planning underway, drop Alana Hirtle or Anne Stevens an email or give them a call at 1.800.613.2172 to get started!

What they invest of themselves, their families, to come to the aid of the community – to fight fires, save lives?

It’s National Volunteer Week (April 15-21), in honour of our Volunteer Firefighters, we’d like to introduce you to a few members of our Liverpool Fire Department to acknowledge what they do for our communities. Chief Steven Parnell and his wife Terrena, Lieutenant Naamon Barton and his wife Krista and Firefighter Matthew Lenenten take us into the Fire Station and into their lives – as Volunteer Firefighters.
WATCH the VIDEO NOW!

In communities all over Nova Scotia, there are more than 8000 Volunteer Firefighters add their efforts to those of ours at the Liverpool Fire Station. All are standing by on duty, ready to come to your aid should you need it. Volunteers Firefighters voluntarily commit to making every effort within their scope of training and ability to assist fellow residents in our most vulnerable time of need. 24/7/365.

Grass Fires. Barn Fires. Home Fires. Places of Business Fires. Vehicle Accident. Medical Emeregencies. Retrieving a cat from a tree. For our Liverpool Volunteer Fire Department – they respond to more than 150 calls a year within our small community here along the South Shore.

They respond at all hours of the day. Get called out on weekends, Holidays. They have missed family events and anniversaries. Volunteering as a Firefighter is in addition to their day jobs and family. Juggling many hats, to serve their community, and save lives, homes and businesses.

In our time of greatest need on November 12, 2011 during our fire, White Point experienced the power, professionalism, passion and commitment of Volunteer Firefighters. The men and women that suit up, drive the Fire Trucks, respond on the scene, raise funds for their equipment, maintain their Fire Stations - are an amazing, giving and humble kind of folk.

This Volunteer Week, we invite you to look more closely at your local Fire Department,
- get to know the Members of your Fire Department – extend a ‘Thank You”.
- practice fire and accident prevention…so they don’t have to come to your rescue!
- support a fundraising event – like attend a Breakfast.
- become a Volunteer with your Department – there are many areas you can help, not just respond to fires!
- be a champion for your local Volunteer Fire Department – help spread the word about their activities and events.

White Point invites you to join us as we say a heartfelt ”Thank You” to Volunteer Firefighters, their families and supporters, here along the South Shore AND everywhere!

Find our more about your local Nova Scotia Fire Department – through the Fire Service Association Nova Scotia .

Thank You:
We’d like to thank the Liverpool Fire Department Members and their wives for agreeing to appear on this video. And special thanks to the Picture House who assisted us in producing this video in such a personal and professional manner.

April 12, 2012, White Point, Nova Scotia - Today is indeed, a really ‘great day at White Point’. The waiting is over. 5 months after the fire that destroyed White Point’s Main Lodge, today the construction of the new Lodge at the Resort begins.

White Pointer’s near and far have been anxiously awaiting the start of construction, checking the White Point Construction Webcam at NovaScotiawebcams.com frequently. Robert Risley, owner of White Point, says today is definitely ‘a great day at White Point’. “Like White Pointers and the community, we too have been anxiously awaiting this day” says Risley. While the actual construction begins today, Risley notes that there has been a tremendous amount of work completed by both his Management Team and the Design Team to get them to this point.
(Meet the Team via our new video now)

While White Pointers begin to see activity on the site of the new lodge today, they’ll also get a look at the conceptual designs of the interior. “Drawing inspiration from our rich tradition, history and connection to our beachside location, Design 360 has created a design that captures the essence of White Point, we can’t wait to see come to life” says Risley. Melissa Cummings of Design 360 says they spent a great deal of time reflecting on the textures, feel and tone of the old Main Lodge to ensure the new lodge interiors would be familiar to White Pointers while welcoming to new guests. “We’ve incorporated natural and reclaimed materials where possible, from the exposed wood to the stone fireplaces, the design is very reminiscent of the old lodge” says Cummings.

White Point announced it would rebuild and re-open in the Fall of 2012 following the fire that destroyed the Main Lodge on November 12, 2011. WHW Architects, Design 360 and J.W. Lindsay Enterprises Ltd. were named as the Design Team in December with the Conceptual Design of the Lodge released February 14, 2012. Take a look at the new Main Lodge Design.

Construction of the new lodge can be seen live via the webcam on www.NovaScotiaWebcams.com, while the interiors can and a virtual tour of the new design can be viewed from the Resorts website at www.whitepoint.com .

During the construction period, with the exception of the 13 Vacation Homes and Cottages and the Golf Course which are now open, White Point is closed with plans to reopen for year-round operation by November 2012 and is now taking reservations.

On April 6th, in keeping with tradition, White Point Golf Club will be opening for our 80th season.

Guests and members enjoy playing this tight, and deceptively challenging oceanside 9 hole Donald J. Ross designed course says Dave Kemshead, White Point’s Golf Pro and Course Manager of 18 years. “When you play here, you are virtually surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Each hole offers a unique perspective, a new view and approach to your game” says Kemshead adding, “I call it the Pebble Beach of the North”.

A walk-about in the Club House and Pro Shop is a trip back in time. While the course construction began in April 1929, it was April 29th, 1932 that B.J. Waters assumed the role of President of the newly incorporated Liverpool Golf & Country Club. Kemshead points to photos of Mr. Waters, beside a picture of the original Clubhouse which opened in September of ’32. He points to a trap door in the ceiling of the Mens Locker Room, noting that it leads to a room in the attic, once the residence for the Club Pro. Above the doors are wooden shaft clubs from the ‘30’s. Kemshead pulls down a frame with 2 golf balls mounted, “these are from the ‘30’s as well, I found them myself over there on the right hand side of #8 fairway” he says.

Pictures illustrate the presence of the past, as does the President’s plaque on the wall but it’s out on the course where it’s really felt. From the local family names in the White Point Cemetery off #5, to the views of White Point Beach Resort, there’s a great deal of history on these fairways. There’s a sense of familiarity and it comes in part from Kemshead himself. Referring to members and guests by name and suggesting that they like to have fun around here with a chuckle.

80 years later, the Course continues to be the welcome mat for the resort, as guests arrive and pass through fairways #8 and #9. With plans well underway for White Point’s Main Lodge Construction, players can still expect traffic, just more trucks than usual this year. Kemshead figures he’ll be getting daily updates on the Lodge construction from players too. Hole #6 offers a perfect view to watch the new Lodge go up this summer.

With the Pro Shop well stocked, the grounds warming up to spring and the Clubhouse gearing up as the ever popular 19th hole, Kemshead, Club Members and White Point are all looking forward to another terrific season of golf, including tournaments, lessons and clinics.

White Point Golf Club, located just outside of Liverpool is a CPGA 9 Hole Donald J Ross Course with a slope rating of 126 for Men and 124 for Ladies, managed by White Point Beach Resort, is open to members and guests from April 6th until Nov. 11th, 2012. For more information about rates or book at Tee-time, visit www.whitepoint.com or phone the Pro Shop at 902.683.2485.

This season, while the Resort will not have Golf Packages available, White Point’s 13 Vacation Homes and Cottages adjacent to the course are available.

On Friday March 30, 2012, Bev Crouse of the Quilters Net and our guiding champion for our new White Point Quilt took a team of us from White Point on a journey to place our own stitches in our new quilt in development. While the purpose was to stitch fabric, it also stitched those of us present, together again. As may be expected, many of our team contiue to find not being at White Point daily a very difficult transition. We get together at least monthly, as a family would, but after spending so many years together nearly every day – it is very different.

Over the course of just 90 minutes, gathering to make our own Bunny Patch, while adding our own stitches to the new golf panel – we difinitely shared many laughs, memories, and chatted up a storm. Below are some pictures of our Quilting Party – see anyone you recognize?

Pleas join us for one of our next Quilting Parties:
April 28: Firemens Breakfast 9 – 10:30am, Liverpool
April 29: Saltscapes Expo, Halifax
