Then LulzSec broke into a Fox database and stole a bunch of employee usernames and passwords. Today, there’s been a very public third hack that has seen the Fox Twitter account compromised.

If this was the first hack Fox had fallen foul of we’d be less sympathetic, but this is the third in just a few months and something needs to change. Yes, they are being targeted by hacking groups, but then the security should be in place to deal with such attacks if you are as high profile an outlet as Fox.

Wednesday night at the White House, President Barack Obama announced the phased withdrawal of 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, with a target of removing the rest of a 33,000 surge force by next year.

There are now some 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan fighting a war that is nearly 10 years old.

The president said it is time to bring some of them home.  He cited the strengthened position of U.S. and NATO forces and momentum achieved against the Taliban.

Pressuring al-Qaida

At the same time, Obama said al-Qaida in Pakistan is under more pressure than at any time since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, including the loss of its leader Osama bin Laden.

“Starting next month, we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, and we will bring home a total of 33,000 troops by next summer, fully recovering the surge I announced at West Point. After this initial reduction, our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace as Afghan Security forces move into the lead,” Obama explained.

Obama said Afghan forces have already assumed security responsibility in some areas.

He reiterated that the Taliban, now in talks with the government, must break ties with al-Qaida, abandon violence and abide by the Afghan Constitution.

Responsibility

Obama called the objective of an Afghanistan that is not an al-Qaida safe haven achievable, but he said the Afghan people must ultimately secure their own nation.

“We will not try to make Afghanistan a perfect place. We will not police its streets or patrol its mountains indefinitely. That is the responsibility of the Afghan government, which must step up its ability to protect its people; and move from an economy shaped by war to one that can sustain a lasting peace,” Obama said.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen offered quick praise of the president’s announcement and the efforts of U.S. and other NATO forces in Afghanistan.

“The tide is turning. The Taliban are under pressure. The Afghan security forces are getting stronger every day,” said Rasmussen.

Mixed reaction

Here in Washington, reaction is mixed, with some lawmakers criticizing the president for withdrawing too many troops and others calling for a larger reduction of troops.

VOA Senior News Analyst Gary Thomas says Obama’s decision needed to achieve two main objectives.

“The president needed a troop drawdown that was not going to be seen as pulling the rug out from under President Karzai, but still enough military pressure on the Taliban that they will come to the table,” Thomas said.

Middle ground

Obama addressed the rising sentiment in the United States against the Afghan war amid a difficult economic recovery. But he urged a middle ground between isolationist tendencies and over-extending abroad.

“We must chart a more centered course.  Like generations before, we must embrace America’s singular role in the course of human events.  But we must be as pragmatic as we are passionate; as strategic as we are resolute,” stated Obama.

That resolve, the president said, will allow Afghan forces to take over full security of their country by 2014. The president said he will host a NATO summit in Chicago next May to discuss the road to that transfer.

You have just done something strange to your chin.

You were on “Dancing With the Stars,” a show whose title is never more than half true.

Your memoir, “Not Afraid of Life,” is coming out Friday, depicting your former fiance and baby daddy Levi Johnston as a “gnat” whose decision to pose nude in Playgirl made you want to puke.

Please, look at your life! Look at your choices!

Have you really decided that sleeping with Levi Johnston after too many wine coolers is the most interesting thing that will ever happen to you? That is the least interesting thing that has happened to anyone, ever, except for one time that Woodrow Wilson thought he was going to sneeze, then didn’t.

And it’s quickly turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Consider: Your job these days is as an “abstinence advocate.” This means that you are reportedly paid more than $200,000 annually to tell strangers that you had sex with Levi Johnston and that it was a mistake. I could have told you that for free!

At the rate we’re going, your epitaph will be something along the lines of “Bristol Palin, a Daughter of Sarah, Slept With a Totally Unremarkable Guy Named Levi Johnston and Then Spent the Rest of Her Life Telling People What a Bad Idea That Was.” You can do better!

I’m all for resting on one’s laurels. I hear that it has orthopedic benefits. But these aren’t laurels.

Memoirs were once the province of people with something to say. No longer! I understand that not having something to say no longer keeps people from saying it, but it does make for a book with a less embarrassing font size. And as a general rule, if you are writing a memoir “with” someone, you probably should not be writing a memoir. In fact, I will go a step further. Anything that can be summarized in an eleven-image slideshow that includes the phrase “wine coolers” does not need to be a book.

And Bristol, you were once annoyed that so many people were talking about your private life. At least you say so in the memoir. True, complaining in your memoir about the unfair attention paid to your private life is like trying to fine people for staring at a nude you painted.

But nothing says, “My private life is no longer private” like “Hello, World, I am publishing an autobiography in which I tell you that I lost my virginity after consuming too many wine coolers on a camping trip.” I think the actual phrase you used is that you succumbed to the wine coolers’ “woozy charms.” That phrase is sort of poetic, if you squint at it and cock your head to one side. Maybe Nancy French, your co-writer, has a career in front of her!

I guess it is refreshing that you are sharing these details honestly with us? I don’t know. That’s what I would say to you, Bristol, if you came up to me in a restaurant and started saying these things, mainly to be polite and encourage you to leave.

I could share more details — you took eight pregnancy tests! You claim you were on birth control! You had a series of negative interactions with Meghan McCain! But I won’t. I’d really rather not have known in the first place.

This is the difficulty with writing a memoir at 20 years old when your primary claim to fame is having been put in the family way by the notoriously unremarkable Levi Johnston. If you’ve led a rich life, you can choose to leave out pesky details like wine coolers and pregnancy tests and locker locations in order to make room for that time you did anything of any note whatsoever. If not, you wind up giving us far, far too much information.

And in case there were any details we missed, Levi’s memoir, Deer in the Headlights, is coming out in the fall.

The fuck nut God Good Squad “God Hates Fags” released the below press statement.

Westboro Baptist Church, known for their infamous antics such as protesting at children’s funerals or carrying signs reading “God hates fags,” is making headlines once again. This time, it’s about calling for a picket of actor Ryan Dunn’s funeral.

The so-called church’s press release on Monday reads “Ryan Dunn is in hell!”

The release was published hours after news broke on Dunn’s fatal car crash. Westboro has called for a picket on “any public memorial/funeral held for Dunn, warning all not to make a mock of sin, & to fear & obey God.”

Not only did the small church, made up of mainly Pastor Fred Phelps and his relatives, call Dunn an “arrogant … sinner” and a “pervert” who “hawked porn-level filth,” but they also underlined what they believe is God’s judgment unto him. “In His wrath, God cut off this young man in the prime of his life, because he made a mock of sin and taught his fellow man to grievously sin against God!”

Hope they cook up some awesome Jackass-style prank to pull on these assholes. I mean, what would Dunn want done?

Showtime Entertainment (a division of CBS) today announced that in the upcoming season of their hit show “Dexter”, that worldwide terrorism figure head will make a guest appearance on a yet to named episode.

Character Dexter Morgan (played by actor Michael C. Hall) determines that the terrorist was actually taking a summer break in sunny Miami Beach, Florida.

The plot summary has Dexter Morgan tracking down Osama Bin Laden to a multi-million dollar luxury beach house. In true Dexter style, he is able to subdue and expertly execute the Taliban leader.

Early previews show that the story line will span over three separate episode in the upcoming season.

Other notable guest appearance this season include actor Gary Busey, and American Idol castoff off Sanjaya.

So, it’s happened. NATO confirmed that it accidentally hit a civilian home in Tripoli yesterday, and reporters taken to the scene by their Libyan government handlers say at least five civilians were killed, two of them children.

The tragedy was pounced upon by Muammar Qaddafi‘s government with relish. Foreign Minister Abdulati al-Obeidi demanded a “a global jihad” to destroy the “oppressive criminal West” in response to the attack, which the Libyan government claims killed nine civilians. Qaddafi admirer Julius Malema in South Africa urged the International Criminal Court to indict Barack Obama and Nikolas Sarkozy for war crimes.

That Qaddafi would latch on to this tragedy as an argument for his regime to be preserved is wholly expected. But he helped breed the situation he now finds himself in. In February and March, before the UN and Arab League authorized action against him, he’d described his opponents in the rebel capital of Benghazi as “cockroaches” and vowed to hunt them down “house to house, room to room, alley to alley.”

Hundreds of civilians died under the indirect fire he poured on rebellious towns, not to mention the flying teams of gunmen who shot down protesters in Tripoli in February. When the UN approved action, he was in the process of overrunning Benghazi, the country’s second-largest city. US, French, and other officials were convinced massive reprisals would have been carried out against the citizenry once Qaddafi had regained the town (a completely unprovable assertion at this point).

Though Qaddafi’s regime has alleged civilian casualties from NATO air strikes in the past, this is the first time the allegation has held up to any scrutiny. And since the formal justification for the NATO strikes is a humanitarian one — that civilian lives are being saved by the protection afforded from Qaddafi’s troops — any civilian deaths are far more than “collateral damage.”

But there’s been a lot of coverage today in the vein of this breathless piece from the BCC: “Two days and two incidents involving civilian casualties. Could this be the moment when support for Nato’s Libyan air campaign begins to unravel? (let me save you the trouble of clicking through. The answer is “no.”) These stories will be largely forgotten tomorrow or the day after.

It’s true that many members of NATO are restless about the Libya air campaign, as are influential members of the US Congress. Some of the concerns hinge on whether NATO bombers are doing more harm than good, a worthy question to ask.

But the fact that NATO acknowledged missing a target and causing civilian deaths yesterday, and may have killed civilians in what it insists was a Qaddafi command post today, changes nothing. The generals who planned and are running this operation knew that killing civilians was inevitable. They told the politicians who signed on for the mission this fact. And now the inevitable has come to pass.

While the shelf-life of the NATO action in Libya is limited, it’s not going to be affected by something that would have been factored into planning and considerations from Day 1.

And there has been no evidence of great carelessness, or mounting civilian casualties from the NATO air campaign (11,000 sorties flown so far) that are within even an order of magnitude of the mortars and grad rockets Qaddafi’s troops have rained down on towns like Misurata and Ajdabiyah. These so-called area weapons are imprecise and inappropriate for use in urban environments. Yet Qaddafi had directed hundreds of them toward residential neighborhoods before the NATO attacks on his forces began three months ago.

Since, his ability to use those weapons has been suppressed (he had four multiple grad rocket launchers arrayed around the southern edge of Benghazi as his forces began to assault the city in March; that assault was ended by British Harriers, which destroyed all the rockets). As this piece was being written, Ben Wedeman of CNN reported three grads landed in a residential area of Misurata, casualties unknown.

Would many more of these weapons be fired on rebel positions and residential neighborhoods alike if NATO air cover were withdrawn? That seems a reasonable assumption.

How much longer will the NATO mission last (assuming Qaddafi manages to hold out indefinitely, which seems unlikely given reports of $25 a gallon gasoline in Tripoli)? Not indefinitely, but no one is going to pull the plug soon.

In the US, while Congress could theoretically de-fund the Libya mission, it isn’t likely to. As angry as some members are that Obama has skirted the War Powers Act by asserting, oddly, that the US is not engaged in “hostilities” in Libya, they’re also well aware that American prestige (and French, British and others) has been put on the line, and that pulling the plug unilaterally would do more harm than good. They’ll probably beat Obama up over the issue, but not press for a vote on the matter.

The situation is similar in other world capitals. There’s public war-weariness and concerns about domestic finances. But that restlessness hasn’t yet coalesced into the sort of force that could end what is, compared with the Afghanistan and Iraq war money pits.

Members of the anti-war group Code Pink surprised Tim Pawlenty Thursday at a book signing for his new bio, “Courage to Stand,” by unleashing buckets of pink confetti and glitter on his head. The activists yelled “Where’s your courage to stand for gay rights and reproductive rights, huh, Tim Pawlenty?” before security guards removed them.

While their line wasn’t as charming as the Gingrich glitter bomber’s, “Feel the rainbow, Newt,” they used the same adorable weapon—pink glitter, a perfect choice to humiliate anti-gay lawmakers.

I think glitter has two roles in this world: making 6 year-old girls happy, and making grown men feel shame. Glitter has incriminated countless men who told their wives they had to work late and instead spent the night stuffing small bills into another woman’s panties. After being reamed out the next morning, the guilty man spends at least a few days finding bits of the glitter in unlikely places—his suit pocket, the rug, his inner ear.

I hope the glitter sticks like glue to Pawlenty who said in January he would reinstate the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Maybe a few days from now, when he gets his suit back from dry cleaning only to find that there’s still glitter in it, he’ll feel the rainbow. Or at least a little glitter guilt.

For two frustrating weeks, President Obama and the White House watched the slow-motion car wreck created by Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner. The White House labored to keep the president away from the rubber-necking attention when the New York congressman’s crude online exhibitionism, lies, confessions and soap opera personal life careened through the airwaves for days on end.

As head of the executive branch and leader of the Democratic Party, Obama weighed various potential reactions: avoid questions; take questions but say nothing; take questions and help Weiner buy time; take questions and try to end the misery. Initially the White House said little.

Only after other Democratic leaders publicly encouraged Weiner to step down to focus on his family and his mental health — and after Weiner opted to take a leave rather than a leap from the House — did the president publicly give the congressman an unambiguous shove. Obama waited to follow a chorus, and then he questioned Weiner’s “effectiveness” as a lawmaker. Rhetorically, Obama even placed himself in Weiner’s shoes (“… if it was me, I would resign”) in an awkward effort to both extend a hand while delivering a punch.

The White House knew the president would get a Weiner question during a “Today” show interview taped Monday in North Carolina. The president could have declined to mediate the mess and simply told Ann Curry that the denouement rested with the House, and with Weiner’s constituents in New York.

Let’s face it, hugging the sidelines at the White House while sexual scandals roar through Washington is not unheard of.

President George W. Bush tried something similar when former Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig was arrested for a men’s room misdemeanor in 2007, then resigned in a panic, then fought back while denying he was gay before eventually retiring from the Senate on his own terms.

Unlike Obama, Bush was not running for re-election during the Craig imbroglio, but the White House argument at the time was that the president wanted to avoid the partisanship of criticizing Democrats for various improprieties, and wanted to play it the same way with Craig’s “predicament,” as the late White House press secretary Tony Snow termed it.

Of course Bush was not always so hands-off. Just ask former Sen. Trent Lott, who resigned as GOP leader in the Senate after a 2002 controversy sparked by praise he offered colleague Strom Thurmond during a 100th birthday speech. Lott’s remarks about Thurmond’s early conservative career — praise similar to comments he made in 1980 — burned through the Internet and then mainstream media coverage. Bush soon publicly rebuked Lott, which helped White House-favorite Bill Frist win election to the Senate’s top GOP post in 2003, when the House, Senate and White House were all controlled by Republicans.

In 1994, when President Clinton believed he sorely needed House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski to help shepherd his ill-fated health reforms, he stood behind the Illinois Democrat while a two-year Justice Department investigation proceeded. In a wave that brought Republicans to power after 40 years in the minority, Rostenkowski’s constituents abandoned him in that 1994 election. He subsequently went to prison on mail fraud charges stemming from a House Post Office scandal.

But in the midst of the controversy in February 1994, Clinton appeared with Rostenkowski at events and refused to shun the veteran lawmaker. As Rostenkowski’s power ebbed, Clinton said nothing about resignation. “[T]here is still a presumption of innocence in this country,” the president told reporters during a news conference that month. “He has not yet been charged with anything.”

On his way out of office after his own national drama with sexual misbehavior, lies and acquittal after impeachment, Clinton pardoned Rostenkowski in 2000.

The life of Huma Abedin, wife of seven-term congressman Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), has been thrust under a microscope after Weiner admitted at a news conference Monday afternoon to lying about sending a lewd photo of himself to a Seattle woman on Twitter, The Washington Post reports.

Weiner also admitted to sexually explicit phone and Internet exchanges with several other women as well.

Weiner offered a tearful apology to Abedin during the news conference Monday afternoon. Abedin was not by Weiner’s side Monday but says she is committed to their marriage and loves her husband deeply, a close friend of Abedin’s told a reporter from The Washington Post.

At the press conference Monday, Weiner echoed those comments, stating that he and Abedin “have no intention of splitting up over this.”

Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, has not missed a day of work since the controversy surrounding her husband intensified in recent days, close friends of Abedin’s told The Washington Post.

Philippe Reines, a top State Department official and longtime Clinton aide, said that Abedin is “doing well under the circumstances,” The Washington Post reports. Abedin is an “incredibly strong woman,” Reines added. “And she’s obviously uncomfortable with the attention.”

Pelosi: Weiner must go!

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner Saturday sought treatment and a leave of absence from Congress after the top two Democratic congresswomen called for his resignation.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who heads the Democratic National Committee, both said Saturday it was time for Weiner to give up, the Los Angeles Times reported. U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., added his voice.

The calls came after Delaware police questioned a 17-year-old girl who had communicated with Weiner on Twitter. She says Weiner, who has admitted sending explicit pictures to several women, sent her nothing inappropriate.

“This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House — and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important — his and his family’s well-being,” Wasserman Schultz said.

“Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person,” his spokeswoman, Risa Heller, told The New York Times. “In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well.

“Congressman Weiner takes the views of his colleagues very seriously and has determined that he needs this time to get healthy and make the best decision possible for himself, his family and his constituents.”

Polls have suggested Weiner retains the support of his constituents. During a short walk to a dry cleaner with a media pack in tow, Weiner heard from several people yelling “Don’t go” and similar sentiments.

Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was revealed to be pregnant after the scandal broke. She is in Africa with Clinton.

Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman Feuding!

It looks like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann might genuinely be frenemies now.

A day after Ed Rollins, Bachmann’s top political adviser, trashed Palin in a radio interview, a top adviser to the former Alaska governor slammed the longtime GOP strategist and called on the Bachmann camp to retract his statements.

“Beltway political strategist Ed Rollins has a long, long track record of taking high profile jobs and promptly sticking his foot in his mouth,” Michael Glassner, Palin’s chief of staff, said in a statement to Politico’s Ben Smith. “To no one’s surprise he has done it again, while also fueling a contrived narrative about the presidential race by the mainstream media. One would expect that his woodshed moment is coming and that a retraction will be issued soon.”

As The Ticket previously reported, Rollins criticized Palin Tuesday, insisting she’s not as qualified to be president as Bachmann and is a joke candidate.

“Sarah has not been serious over the last couple of years,” Rollins said. “She got the vice presidential thing handed to her. She didn’t go to work in the sense of trying to gain more substance. She gave up her governorship.”

Rollins responded to Glassner’s statement with a semi-apology, telling ABC his comments had nothing to do with “Michele, Michele’s campaign or any of the rest of it.” “This was my transition from being an analyst to a political strategist, and I missed a step,” he said.

But Rollins declined to take back what he’d said about Palin. “What’s the retraction?” Rollins asked. “I say she’s serious?”

Rollins’ comments fueled the storyline that Palin and Bachmann are on the brink of a political catfight over the 2012 nomination—a dynamic that political observers have been pressing for weeks, in spite of evidence to the contrary. But both sides added fuel to the fire today in a separate piece in Politico in which the Palin and Bachmann camps sniped at each other—mostly via advisers who declined to be named.

“The view in Iowa is that she’s unstable,” an unnamed Bachmann aide told Politico. “When she resigned her position as governor that whole event seemed odd, and people in Iowa saw that.”

Meanwhile, “a Palin associate” told the paper that the ex-governor has expressed “disdain” for Bachmann–even though another top Palin aide denies that.

Glassner’s comments are telling, as Palin aides often don’t speak publicly without the explicit permission of the former governor herself.

But that’s not the only faux controversy dogging Palin. As ABC News’s Sheila Marikar reports, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat from Oregon, has launched in an inquiry into whether Palin’s recent bus tour used excessive federal resources. He’s calling into question the manpower the National Park Service offered to Palin on her tour of federal historic sites along the East Coast.

A Park Service spokesman tells ABC Palin did receive some special treatment—including early access to the Statue of Liberty—but it was no different from how any other “celebrity” would be treated.

“We treated her as any other celebrity that might come in,” NPS spokesman David Barna told ABC, adding they’d do the same for “Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.”
