Winter Update

The egglayers

January is probably our quietest time out on the farm, in between the spring fever and the forgotten chores of summer and late fall. As we reflect and look to the future, we plan to make some changes this year, down sizing parts of our animal operation and up sizing our veggies. I'm excited about the veggie up size and expanding towards our original vision. We are also adding a flower CSA to the farm model this coming spring!! This will be managed by our second year intern, Hannah, as a project to hone her skills and add value to the farm. In addition, we are planning to offer an egg option to the CSA model that could be received every week or bi-weekly. Look through the site for our new prices and as I dial in our new options, they will become available soon!

Spring Update

   Winter is well behind us at the farm, we have our new greenhouse up and rockin'! Yes our dream came true, thanks to you and some major patients we have up scaled. This is giving us a much more secure place for our starts, early crops, and a warmer place for the fist run of meat chickens to be.
   On that note, we have also up scaled our animals on the farm. We plan to have three runs of meat chickens, a dozen Berkshire pigs, and 80 turkeys. The upcoming plan is to add egg layers this summer and offer a meat CSA option in the future, for now we will sell direct.
   We expanded our summer share openings to 65 members, and the new option for half shares. Also our "storage share" has changed to "extended share" and will be delivered thru December with greenhouse offering some nice greens.
   I should also mention our Mushroom Workshop coming up this April 30th @ 10:00 am. I'm excited we are expanding on our old mushroom operation and adding a new variety this year. This brings me to some sad news about my health. I broke my calcaneus (heel bone) in March. Now after surgery (including screws and a metal plate) I plan to walk in a few weeks. I've been crutching and crawling, but thanks to friends and family we are still on schedule.

Autumn Update

Like usual we have been overwhelmed by the season, and have ignored the blog site. Know its a sure sign that we have been focused on the farm's priorities. We are looking forward to an abundant late fall. All of the turkeys and storage shares have found homes for this season and we are already receiving early-bird sign ups for 2011! We're hoping the farm can afford a greenhouse this winter/spring. This would widen our season and save time and energy getting our transplants ready for the season. We'll know more after turkey harvest when we can do the farm's accounting. See our revised prices. 2011 Thanks for the interest.

Happy Spring!

These unusually warm days in March have given us a pleasant start to our season, we have 15,500 onions germinating! And have received most of our seed orders. I had to search through eight catalogs to find varieties we trust and am very excited to use a large portion of our own produced seeds. We have also had pleasant days to work on the barn, it is getting roofed by early April. We had a cupola and weathervane added to the barn by grandma's request. The pig share option is sold out, as we only want to raise four for the first year and see if indeed they make good soil tillers. Two of the pigs are getting roasted whole for weddings. Currently we are at half capacity for Summer Shareholding, and have lots of room for Storage Shares, turkeys, and chickens.

Summer Share 2010, August 5th

Produce CSA Memberships:
As a member you will receive weekly newsletters “The Growing News”, u-picks, free workshops, and farm event invites. The shares are delivered to three central locations, Stevenspoint, Waupaca , and the Whitefeather Farm (2239 Sky View Rd, Custer).

-Full Produce Share memberships
This includes 21 weeks of produce including mushrooms, fruits, and veggies. Shares start at the end of May lasting until mid October. This is seasonally grown food. Early season will have more frost tolerant crops: lettuce, turnips, radish, spinach, etc... and as the season goes on the share explodes with bounty: eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, and much more. $495.00

-Half Produce Share memberships
This is the same as the "Full Produce Share", but will be delivered every other week (10wks). Keep in mind you may not receive some crops as they are delivered only once during the season. $260.00

-Extended Share Memberships
Receives 4 bi-weekly shares including 2boxes or more per delivery thru Nov. and Dec. of storage items including: popcorn, dry beans, squash, potatoes, onions, garlic, celeriac, carrot, and much more. $200.00

Extended Share 2011, Dec. 15th

-Basic Share
For one year recieves "The Growing News" weekly e-letter, free workshops, u-picks, and farm event invites. $35.00

Flower CSA Memberships
As a member you will receive beautiful bouquets or centerpieces of flower and herb arrangements. They will be freshly harvested for bi-weekly deliveries to our drop sites. You also wil receive our "Growing News" newsletters. Arrangements are seasonal and will change in size and type. Expect some of these flowers: sunflower, lily hyacinth, crocus, daffodil, leucojum, cherry blossom, zinnia, allium, snapdragon, aster, chrysanthemum, and much more.

-Full Flower Share: A biweekly floral arrangement including two or more focal flowers. From April to Sept. $85.00

-Half Flower Share: A biweekly smaller floral arrangement including one or more focal flowers. From April to Sept. $60.00

-Floral Bouquet Service: A great option for businesses or restaurants. These will be delivered and freshened up throughout the season to keep your place looking sharp. Please contact for a quote.

Egg CSA Memberships
Our egg layer are fed organic feed and are as free range as possible, being allowed to graze our open pastures daily. Egg dozens will be delivered on Thursdays with the Summer Produce Shares at the drop sites.

-Full Egg Share: Receive one dozen eggs per week for 21 weeks, late May through Oct. $74.00

-Half Egg Share: Receive one dozen eggs biweekly for 10 weeks, late May through Oct. $36.00
"Extra" eggs available for on farm purchase $4.00/dzn.

Where has the summer gone?

The summer season has found us so busy we haven't had the time to keep up the site which will probably become a theme. The beautiful part of farming here is you never no what to
expect. The weather as us farmers always complain, has been very odd. We have been finding enough to fill the shares and building up a lot of new additions to the farm. Turkey tractors,new gardens,barn, and much more, I hope to have pictures updated of the summers progress soon.

Just 3 more weeks until the summer share is over 22 weeks seems to go faster every year.
We have several storage shares available yet.

They consist of storagable produce delivered in early-mid Nov. including some or all of; onions, garlic, beets, carrots, squash, rutabaga, redmeat radish, brussel sprouts, leeks, potatoes, dry beans, cabbage, celeriac, parsnips, dry corn, popping corn and informative storage tips. The season has started.
We had our first summer share out may 28th and we are spending alot of time out planting the years crops and finishing the barn. We expect our turkeys July 7th, a month later this year in hopes they won't be so big! We are currently sold out of summer shares, but have storage shares and turkeys available. peas,spinach,turnips,radish,arugula, and beets are up. And the onions, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, and kale transplants are in!
The more we get done the more we can do, this is our time to buzz like bees.

The Mushroom Workshop was a fun success!

There were a 135 Shiitake logs inoculated, and a dozen oyster towers made! Our 2year logs are ready to produce, if interested in preseason Shiitake please call as we are in the field often.

Come join us for a day with fungi; Shiitake, Oyster, and Almond Agaricus. With many health benefits, great texture, and flavor, mushrooms are finding their way into many dishes. Let’s get our hands dirty and learn how fungi get incorporated at the Whitefeather farm.
We will provide beverages, good spirits, and a few food dishes (please feel free to bring a dish to pass). For non-farm members there is a 5$ donation and the chance to bring home a log at a discounted price.

We ordered with: FEDCO, Johnny's, Seed Saver Exchange, and Turtle Tree Seeds.
80% of the seed is organic, for OG. certification, one must source several seed banks to find an organic option to that variety. It takes a few long nights.

Fungi: the largest organisms on the planet!
With many health benefits, these offer a great nutritious option to our food-share.
The last Saturday in April, we have a mushroom workshop. This includes education, potluck, and drink with the option to take some logs home for a great deal.

Turkeys
Our turkeys are pasture raised with organic feed. They are processed on farm with in state regulations, fresh, non-frozen, and available just days before Thanksgiving.
I feel their position in cycling nutrients, efficient use of garden and pasture products, and pest control give them a good home in the farm's ecosystem. And gal darn they taste good!!

A sustainable community farm

Whitefeather Organics has a holistic approach. Our mission is to be a local, healthy, and sustainable option for the community, offering a connection to the food experience.
“As a steward of the farm, I hope the members come and experience what their farm can provide.”

We bought land for Whitefeather Organics in fall of 2006. Tony has been involved in farming his whole life and farming organically for over 12 years. Crop rotation and garden separation are used to control disease and pests. For soil nutrition, we use intense cover cropping,grazing, and a large farm-based compost. The organic feed used to supplement the livestock's growth is ground at a local mill and is grown certified organic by a local Farmer. Our crops are harvested fresh for every delivery. Each year we incorporate new perennials such as: asparagus, mushrooms, fruit/timber trees, berries, animals…and always trying new veggies. Sustainability for community is the goal and we keep that in mind in every aspect of our farm, from where we get our energy to how we build our buildings. Education is also a focus of the farm which offers: worker-shares (members have the opportunity to work for their food), teaching interns, and facilitating workshops. Enlightening the agricultural world and future farmers.

A barn for a new age of farming

Two years of sourcing timber, milling, scribing, fitting, and the main frame is up; 15 people and 7hrs to raise, a building for many generations stands tall. Thanks to all who helped make it real and Jeremy Woodliff for his unconditional dedication.
