This award is one of several Silver Arrow Awards given each year by Spirit Wind Records, which has been reaching out to Native Music Artists for 11 years. The Silver Arrow Award Program was founded by Donald Blackfox and includes the Board of Directors of Spirit Wind Records. Whitefish, MT, November 23, 2010: The team of JUNGLE JACK’S ZOONIACS internet radio show is returning to the Calgary Zoo December 3rd to record new winter shows and shoot a promotional video with a film crew. The radio program will investigate how zoo animals, particularly those indigenous to warmer climates, are cared for during the winter months in Canada.

The “Jack” in JUNGLE JACK’S ZOONIACS is world renowned animal expert Jack Hanna. This “kid friendly”program is hosted by Rmi Strauser and Jeffrey Hyer, and includes Myah Strauser as MC. The “kid-tastic” personalities Rmi, 13 and Jeffrey, 11 are the youngest radio hosts in the Northwest.On each show Jack Hanna shares his knowledge of animals with the hosts. Every 30-45 minute monthly program is packed with adventurous zoo tours and interviews, fun animal facts, interesting trivia, music, jokes and more. This past summer, the trio was on assignment at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington and Montana’s Glacier National Park.

Eureka Rendezvous Days Hot-rods & Buckskins

WhitefishRadio.com braved the rainy cold weather and headed north on April 24 for the 32nd Annual Rendezvous Days in Eureka, MT. The clouds parted and sun shone for the duration of the Hot-rods & Buckskins Parade.

Our Zooniacs, hosts of the Saturday morning kids program featuring Jungle Jack Hanna, made lots of new friends while handing out animal toys to the young spectators. It was great to see our friends from the Whitefish Winter Carnival Royalty atop their float with Yeti & Penguin accompaniment.

We found a great place to set up "camp" among the classic cars and enjoyed meeting our neighbors for the day. The Zooniacs gave away more great prizes and shared some of their expansive knowledge about the animal kingdom.

A big THANK YOU to the Rendezvous Days folks for inviting us and to the great people of Eureka for hosting us; we had a great time and are looking forward to next year!

Bartending for Charity to Benefit North Valley Music School

Whitefish's finest and funnest came out to support the North Valley Music School on April 30, 2010. Ross and Sue Strauser, owners were celebrity bar tenders for the evening with special guests: John Dunnigan, North Valley Music School Suzuki String Students, Roustabout, and David Ackroyd.

A Cruise for Ten on Lake MacDonald with Ribs by Ross was the prize for a special drawing held. Eugene & Carla from Calgary won the drawing and are excited to have a new activity for their annual summer vacation to Glacier National Park.

The Whitefish Winter Carnival Royalty stopped by to bestow the following title on Ross and Sue: Baronial "Big Fish" Bartenders; Celebrated Celebrities, Carefully Concocting Copious Cocktails with a Commanding and Quite Carnival Contrivance. Majestically Mixing Merriment and Melange for the Merit of North Valley Music School.

We appreciate the Boat Club for holding such a wonderful event and the crowd who participated so enthusiastically in the evening's festivities. A great time was had by all!

A Tribute to Our Dear Friend Ted Lund

We at WhitefishRadio.com join with our community in celebrating the life of "Mr. Whitefish", Ted Lund. Join us as we pay tribute to a hometown legend on Tuesday, October 20, at 10:00 AM MST on Whitefish Times with host Jill Evans. Find out how a young man from Sherwood, North Dakota fell in love with Whitefish, Montana during his very first visit on a troop train in 1943. Hear the touching story from 1945 about spending two nights in the home where his Mother was born near war torn Hamburg, Germany. Ted also recounts how he started Whitefish Floral back in 1947, and how he met and married his beloved Connie. Ted speaks about the birth of his pride and joy, the Whitefish Winter Carnival Penguins, and sings the "Whitefish Song" as only Ted Lund could sing it. WhitefishRadio.com has also obtained a copy of a Ted Lund interview recorded by Pete Peterson back in the 1980's. We will be playing clips from that interview for the first time. We will also be posting exclusive video clips of Ted’s interview with Adam Pitman for the up-coming Whitefish Winter Carnival documentary to be released sometime around Christmas 2009. This tribute will be available for on-demand listening through the Whitefish Times archives.

WEEKEND GET-AWAY TO SANDPOINT, IDAHO

Did you take a vacation outside the Flathead Valley this summer? It seems like most of us who live in the Valley usually don't. As the old saying goes, when you live in Northwest Montana, "there are nine months of winter and three months of company." But when you live in the most beautiful part of the state, it seems that everyone wants to come and stay with you in the summer.

With unseasonably chilly October temperatures and snow in the mountains making its way to the Valley floor, Mother Nature is blatantly dropping the hint that summer is definitely over and winter is well on its way! But what if you really did want to "get-away" from the Flathead Valley, and never found the time during the summer months? No worries! Fall is actually one of the most beautiful and best times to take a vacation. In fact, you will get a lot more "bang for your buck" not paying "peak season" tourist prices. Smart Travel Resources report, "Hotel rooms are 20% less on average." Plus, with tourists hard to find, many hotels and resorts now offer special weekend packages.

Case in point, my husband and I recently took a trip to Sandpoint, ID. Would you believe that on a Friday and Saturday night we found a room for two adults and two dogs, under $50.00? Yes, it's true. Fall specials are definitely out there and now is the time to take advantage of them!

Sandpoint's slogan is, "What a beautiful pace." Not only is it a beautiful place, it's also a wonderful town for kicking back and enjoy yourselves. If you have never been to Sandpoint, I must tell you it's the perfect weekend get-away! Only four hours west of Kalispell and about 90 minutes East of Spokane, the town has many similarities to Whitefish, Montana. Schweitzer Ski Resort and Lake Pend Oreille provide numerous outdoor activities. After a day of skiing or playing on the lake, Sandpoint offers an endless list of things to do; shopping, fine dining, theater, the choice is yours. Some of our favorite places to visit are: The Pine Street Bakery, Coldwater Creek Clothing Company, Cabin Creek Interiors, Northwest Handmade Furniture, and of course, the Pend d'Orielle Winery and the Laughing Dog Brewery, (yes, dogs are welcome at the brewery).

Summer is rapidly drawing to a close. Have you done everything you wanted to do with your family this summer? Are you looking for a few more activities to enjoy during these last few weeks of summer? The Flathead Valley, in Northwest Montana, is still alive and kickin' with numerous summer events. Take a look at what's going on in your area:

Glacier National Park:

August 23rd: "Picnic in the Park" - Have a picnic with your family at Glacier National Park. The Glacier Centennial program will launch its full calendar of activities for the centennial celebration. Live music and cake will be provided. The park's gates are FREE this day. Event locations: Lake McDonald Lodge and Glacier Park Lodge. 11-4 p.m.

Kalispell:

August 19-23rd: Northwest MT Fair at the Flathead Valley Fairgrounds. This year the Fair is "Bustin' Loose" with the PPRCA Rodeo, Indian Relay Races and POW WOW, Pig Wrestling, Team Penning and the Demolition Derby; plus, the carnival rides and petting zoo. There is something for every family member to enjoy!

August 25th: Picnic in the Park. A summer evening concert at Depot Park in Kalispell. This concert features local favorite, Rob Quist and the Great Northern Band. Food and Beverages are available for purchase. Free admission. 7-9 p.m.

August 22nd and August 29th: Farmer's Markets.

August 22nd: Race up the Danny On Trail: A Big Mountain Trail Run, 8:00 a.m. How fast can you run up the Danny On Trail??? Challenge yourself! All proceeds go benefit the Glacier Nordic Ski Team. All racers receive a free ride down the chairlift.

August 22nd: Duck Derby 2:30 p.m. at the Whitefish Riverside Park and Baker Ave. Adopt a duck for charity. A benefit for the community. Grand prize $5,000. Join "The Big Fish" for all the fun!

August 29th: Brewfest at Whitefish Mountain Resort. Starts at 3 p.m. 13 breweries. Entry includes 10 free samples from the Northwest best independent breweries. The FREE snowbus will be running to town. $20.00 in advance.

Lakeside:

August 22-23rd: 4th annual Big Sky Antique and Classic Boat Show. Come to Lakeside to view these beautiful boats! Don't forget to stop by the Tamarack Brewery for lunch or dinner. Kids will love the chocolate chip cookie pizza!

Polson:

August 22nd: 4th annual Brewfest on the Lake. Join the fun at KwaTagNuk Resort on their patio starting at 6 p.m. Brews from local breweries. Food from area eateries and dancing to live music. $10 admission fee.

Skiing is over......now what?

"DESTINATIONS IN A DAY GETAWAYS"

EEKS! The ski season is over, yet it is still snowing in the Flathead Valley! What do we do on our weekends now?????

As the advertisement came on for Lookout Pass Ski Resort's last day being a FREE ski day for everyone, I seriously considered packing up all my ski gear and heading to their resort for on last "fling" in the snow. But alas, common sense got the best of me and I decided not to head to Lookout Pass that day. However, it got me thinking, where could we go in a day's drive for a nice overnight stay that was out of the snow completely??? Someplace fun, interesting, and inexpensive.....someplace within a three to four drive, but not crowded with people? My husband had the answer.....Post Falls, ID. Post Falls, isn't that the city we always drive by leaving Coeur D'Alene on I-90 heading towards Spokane? "Yep, that's the one. The one with the new Cabela's sporting goods store," my husband replied. Ahh, yes the truth comes out....he has a reason himself to go to Post Falls.

If you're not familiar with Post Falls, let me give you some insight. Straight from the city's brochure, "Post Falls is known as Idaho's River City. It sets on the shores of the Spokane River and is just minutes away from both Coeur D'Alene and Spokane, with unlimited things to do." The brochure continued with, "Post Falls is the perfect place for anyone seeking fun and excitement, cultural and historical enrichment, or just plain fun." Okay, I admit that I'm into the "just plain fun" aspect of that statement!

And we did have a lot of fun during our weekend at Post Falls. We found a great hotel, the Sleep Inn, located just of I-90. The staff was very friendly and our room was clean! We loved that the hotel was pet friendly and had a great pet area. Plus, the Centennial trail (for walking and biking only) runs directly in front of the hotel. We took the dogs for a nice long walk to Falls Park. This park has a playground, picnic tables and for scenic purposes, a waterfall and view of the Post Falls Dam......ahhhhhh, a Kodak moment.

Once we were done hiking, it was time to do what every woman loves to do....SHOP! Yes, we did start with Cabela's and then moved onto the Spokane Valley Mall and neighboring areas. As we drove around we saw there are tons of things to do in a weekend......shopping, dining, concerts, riverboat cruises, auto racing, golfing, seaplane tours, Silverwood theme park......wow, so much to do in a weekend, I think we'll just have to come back to the Post Falls Area!!!

We'll start a day early on Thursday during Rob Quist live from 10 AM to Noon MST, where you can catch Jungle Jack Hanna sharing his 'Scariest Moments.' On Friday, downtown Whitefish starts jumpin' early from 2:30 to 5:30 PM with Trick or Treat Street. The downtown merchants open their doors to all the little ghouls and goblins who come dressed up to trick or treat in a safe and friendly environment. The Big Fish Trailer will be there playing classic Halloween music, passing out candy, Big Fish bumper stickers and magnets. Come see us at the south end of Main Street. Then, for more frightful Halloween fun, log on to WhitefishRadio.com's live stream for the return of 'DRACULA' at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM MST. WhitefishRadio.com would like to thank everyone involved in the P.TA. tailgate fundraiser at last Friday's Whitefish Bulldogs homecoming game. I discovered years ago that one of my greatest strengths is serving others. I truly believe in investing myself in the community that I live in. Never do I feel better about how I have spent my time than at the end of a day of service. I know that the contributors to this P.T.A. fundraiser share these feelings. I would like to personally thank Mike's Conoco, Luizanne's Fine Catering, Whitefish Pizza Hut, Alpine Market, and Whitefish Care for their food and beverage contributions. We grilled a lot of bratts, and sold lots of pizza by the slice and freshly baked cookies to the hungry football fans. We also made a lot of new friends. All of the money raised goes to the Whitefish P.T.A.

Speaking of fundraisers! WhitefishRadio.com is back at it again this Saturday October 4th from 6:00 to 10:00pm. It's "OCTOBERFISH" A fundraiser for the Stumptown Art Studio. The Big Fish will be hosting the event. Right after the OOM PAH PAH polka band...we will be playing some good ol Rock n Roll and giving away raffle prizes. I've had a chance to view some of the items in the silent auction and I was very impressed. Tickets are $50.00 per person and include: A souvenier beerstein or wine glass, complimentary food, drinks, cigar bar, bee garten, raffle prizes and more.
