The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow...which is in effect until 7 pm pst Thursday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect.

Snow accumulations: additional accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in the valleys...with higher amounts in the mountains.
Timing: periods of snow showers with heaviest accumulations Thursday afternoon.
Locations include: Ely...McGill...Connors Pass...Great Basin National Park
Temperatures: 22 to 32 degrees.
Winds: Winds will pick up late Thursday morning...west to southwest 15 to 25 with gusts to 35 mph.
Impacts: Roads will become snow packed and slippery. In addition breezy to windy conditions will cause blowing and drifting snow with visibilities reduced to near zero at times.

Precautionary/Preparedness actions...

Midway Reports Significant Gold Resource Increase at Gold Rock, Nevada

Midway Gold Corp. announces a new Indicated resource of 310,000 ounces (oz) of gold and Inferred resource of 331,000 oz of gold at the Company’s Gold Rock project, White Pine County, Nevada. The gold resource, which appears to be open in all directions, represents a significant increase above the previously reported 344,700 oz historic estimate. The Indicated resource is contained in 12,968,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.74 grams per tonne (gpt) gold. The Inferred resource is contained in 17,894,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.58 gpt gold. The new resource includes results from 466 verified historic drill holes and 31 Midway verification holes that were drilled in 2011. Gold Rock lies 8 km southeast of Midway’s Pan project.

Ladycats come THISCLOSE to the title, lose by 5

The media room at the Lawlor events center in Reno was abuzz at half time.

The team no one gave a chance to, White Pine, was leading the once-beaten Pershing County Lady Mustangs 35-27 at the half!

But momentum shifted following Ma’a Kingston’s foul out and Sarita Jo Condie got back into the game. Scoring 21 of her 33 points in the second half and going 14 of 16 from the line. The Ladycats put on their best show of the season but it wasn’t enough as Pershing County took their second straight 2A Girls Basketball Title 65-60.

Bailey Moore kept the Cats in it with 21, Ma’a Kingston fouled out with 11, Hayden Windous with 10, Marci Medlyn and Amanda Allred each with 6, Kerri Fulmer with 4, and Maddy Collins with 2.

Sarita Jo Condi led all scorers with 33, Claudia Dennler with 10, Grace Moreira with 9 (Including the game capping 3 pointer), Melissa Gonzales with 7, Samantha Dennler with 3, Leah Holland with 2 and Kalynne Mitchell with 1.

Ladycats to Finals; Pershing County the final mountain

The White Pine Ladycats sent the Lincoln County Lady Lynx home on Friday afternoon with a 34-28 win, sending the Ladycats to a rematch with Pershing County.

At the half Pershing was rolling to a huge win over Southern 2A number 2 Mountain View Christian 48-4. That’s right. A 44 point lead at the half over the number 2 team in the south.

Bailey Moore and Marci Medlyn led the cats with 10 points each and Maa Kingston followed with 5.

The Ladycats will need to step up their game to an extraordinarly level to beat Pershing County, who has lost only one game this season – to 3A Lowry in Winnemucca.

The Ladycats have to find a way to take Junior Sarita Jo Condie out of her game. Condie is averaging 21.4 points per game.

Stepping up their own game is a must.

Report: More Nevada Children Living the Poorest Neighborhoods

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A new KIDS COUNT Data Snapshot from the Annie E. Casey Foundation released today shows a 58-percent increase in the number of children living in high-poverty neighborhoods in Nevada, but Las Vegas is doing better than nearby cities. UNLV economics professor Stephen Brown, director of Nevada KIDS COUNT, says about a quarter of the children in Phoenix and San Diego are living in high-poverty communities, compared to only about 10 percent in Las Vegas.

Brown points to a number of factors.

"We have a lot of young people living here who are yet to have children, a large elderly population whose children aren't living at home, and we just don't have the big concentrated pockets of poverty."

Brown cautions that the snapshot's state numbers may be too optimistic, however, not taking into account some economic factors. Nationwide, the number of children living in high-poverty communities increased by 25 percent over the last decade.

Laura Speer, associate director for policy reform at the Casey Foundation, says the report shows that even if a family is not officially "in poverty" according to federal standards, children are still harmed when a lot of other people in the neighborhood are under that poverty line.

"Living in an area of concentrated poverty limits the opportunities families have to get a better job to make sure that the health and the welfare of their children is taken care of."

Brown says finding ways to grow the economy is the main way to solve the problem, and next on the list should be improving education opportunities in the Silver State.

"We need to look at the role schools play in providing opportunity to children and the kinds of issues children living in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty have."

According to the report, African-American, American Indian and Latino children are six to nine times more likely to live in high-poverty communities than their white counterparts.

Midway Drills 50 Meters of 1.3 gpt Gold at Gold Rock, Nevada

Midway Gold Corp. announces that drilling on its Gold Rock Project, White Pine County, Nevada intercepted 50 meters of 1.37 grams per tonne (gpt) gold including 8 meters of 4.4 gpt gold in core hole GR11-23c. Drilling also intercepted 45 meters of 1.44 gpt gold including 3 meters of 4.8 gpt gold and 4.4 meters of 3.9 gpt gold in GR11-14c, and 30 meters of 1.34 gpt gold including 16 meters of 2.1 gpt gold in GR11-29. These final results from the 2011 drilling program continue to confirm the expected grade and location of this bulk tonnage, Carlin-style, sediment-hosted gold mineralization defined by historical drilling.

Ely, Nevada—Former First Lady of the United States, Pat Nixon, was born 100 years ago in Ely,Nevada; and the city has a weekend of festivities planned in her honor, Mar. 16-17. The entire state of Nevada, however, has cause for celebration – not just Ely, where the celebrations are being held. To this day, Pat Nixon was the only First Lady born in Nevada. The city of Ely, White Pine County and all of Nevada have reason to be proud. Former First Lady Pat Nixon, and her tireless efforts, including promoting a number of charitable causes and, especially, volunteerism, is still an example for us all to follow.

A variety of government officials, dignitaries and VIPS, including representation from the Nixon Foundation, are expected to ride the train and attend the dinner on Saturday, Mar. 17. The public is also invited and encouraged to attend. Tickets for the 6 p.m. dinner at the Bristlecone Convention Center are $60 per person and $100 per couple. In recognition of this esteemed former First Lady and the 100^th anniversary of her birth in Ely, a variety of events are scheduled throughout the city of Ely, for a weekend of celebration March 16-17. In addition to the steam train ride and commemorative dinner, other highlights of the Pat Nixon Centennial in Ely include a special Pat Nixon Exhibit at the White Pine Museum for the entire month of March; a juried art show at the Garnet Mercantile; an antique car show and parade; and a tour of the English House at Renaissance Village.

On Mar. 16, 1912, Thelma Catherine Ryan was born to an Irish miner and German housewife in Ely,Nevada. Born so close to St. Patrick’s Day, her father, William M. Ryan Sr., called her Pat, a name which stuck and which she preferred. In addition to a being a gold miner, Pat Nixon’s father was also a sailor and truck farmer, who later moved the family to a truck farm in California.

Pat Nixon was the First Lady of the United States from Jan. 1969 to Aug. 1974, preceded by Lady Bird Johnson and succeeded by Betty Ford. Up to that time, she was the most traveled First Lady in U.S.history and the first First Lady to enter a combat zone. Mammovan in Ely March 12-13

 Nevada Health Centers, Inc. mobile mammography unit, the Mammovan, will be traveling to Ely, NV March 12th - 13th at the White Pine County Park. 

The Mammovan is a mobile mammography van that travels to underserved areas of our state to provide mammograms to geographically isolated and/or uninsured women who probably would not seek out mammography services on their own.

The Mammovan seeks to serve the underserved population, targeting women age 40 and over. The Mammovan also provides services for women under 40, that have a physician referral. The Unit has provided more than 30,000 mammograms and diagnosed 113 women with breast cancer.  Many of these women would not have been diagnosed if it were not for the Mammovan.

Malone Stipulates to Ethics Violation

Former White Pine County Clerk JoAnn Malone reached a stipulated agreement with the Nevada Commission on Ethics in the wake of the 2010 County Election when the county fired then Deputy Clerk, now County Clerk Lin Burleigh.

Malone agreed to a total civil penalty of $2000 as a part of the settlement.

County Commission Special Meeting to select firm to find new HR and Finance Director

The White Pine County Commission will hold a single agenda meeting to hire a firm to locate replacements for what are considered two important positions.

The 9am meeting on February 29th in the Commission Chambers will be to hire Bob Murray and associates to recommend a new Human Resources Director and Finance Director, and to pay them up to $37000 plus up to $14500 in expenses.

County Finance Director Charles Rodewald said recently that it was time to step aside, while County Human Resources DIrector Verne Bohn tendered his resignation several weeks ago.

The driver was contacted and advised he had stopped to sleep.
REPORT OF AN INTOXICATED SUBJECT:
City - officers located the person, who was laying in the roadway. The person, identified as 60 year old Michael Angelo Tognoni, was taken into custody for being intoxicated in the roadway.
REPORT OF A PROBLEM WITH A SUBJECT:
The reporting party claimed another subject was harassing him. The behavior was found not to be harassing in nature.
REPORT OF A TRUANCY:
City - a student was deemed a habitual truant by the high school and was issued a citation for truancy.
REPORT OF A DEATH:
City - Michael Angelo Tognoni died while at the White Pine County Jail. No signs of foul play. An autopsy is pending.
PROBLEM WITH SUBJECT:
City - a student was creating a disturbance in school. Contact was made with the student and guardian. The student agreed to adjust his behavior.

City - a male claimed he lost his wallet. A report was completed.

The reporting party claimed someone entered her home and stole some of her personal belongings. The investigation continues.
