We recently sat down with Whitetail Lane Farm’s owner Jamie Cunningham to discuss goat milk lotions, and why they’re so good for your skin.

How do you make your goat milk lotion? What’s in it?  

Our goat milk lotions are handcrafted through an immersion process by combining both warm goat milk and oils that produce a luxurious and creamy product.
Ingredients we use include goat milk, water, shay butter, almond oil, avocado oil, steric acid, emulsifying wax, phenonip (preservative), and fragrance oil. 

Is goat milk lotion gentle on your skin?

Whitetail Lane Farm’s goat milk lotions are gentle enough to be used on your entire body — face included! Apply a small amount of product to hands and thoroughly massage into the skin until fully absorbed. For maximum benefits, use after washing and exfoliating your skin with our goat milk soap and sugar scrub. Benefits last with continued and/or regular use. 

Is goat milk lotion good for eczema? 

The natural nutrients in goat milk lotion moisturize skin and reduce redness, itchiness, and bumps in the skin. Eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, skin conditions resulting in red, itchy and skin patches all benefit from goat milk lotion.

Is goat milk lotion good for people with dry skin?

If your skin is dry, itchy or irritated, our goat milk lotion is for you. Our goat milk lotion works from the inside out, providing your skin with long lasting moisturization and protection. The combination of goat milk and shea butter in our goat milk lotions offer extra layers of protection to dry skin.

Can goat milk lotion help people who suffer from acne? 

Our goat milk lotion is very similar to our soap where as you can use our lotion to treat acne. Research shows that goat milk lotion has a pH level similar to your skin. Goat milk lotion is enriched with huge amounts of protein, fat, iron, vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, E, copper and selenium. These beneficial nutrients help to replenish and pamper skin gently.  The vitamins it contains also means that goat milk has some anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce acne redness. Besides its gentle calming effect, goat milk lotion is also used widely to brighten the skin's complexion.

What is the difference between your goat milk lotion and basic skin lotion?

Unlike store bought lotions our lotion will not leave greasy film, but a rather soft powder feel. It leaves your skin feeling silky smooth to the touch. The moisturizing benefits of goat milk lotion far surpass that of commercial lotion because of the natural creams of goat milk.

Can I apply goat milk lotion underneath makeup?

Yes, our goat milk lotion is great for your face as well as your whole body. It is not harsh to your skin.

What types of goat milk lotion do you carry? Which is the most popular?

We carry 6-8 scented goat milk lotions depending on the time of the year. Our most popular scented lotion is the oats milk and honey as it is a unisex fragrance that appeals to men and women. Our most popular scent for the Holidays is our peppermint scented lotion.

What surprises people when they try goat milk lotion?

When people first try out our lotions they are surprised by how little you have to use. A small pea sized dollop will moisturize both hands, you don’t need a lot. They also love the powdery feel and how well it penetrates the skin.

Does goat milk lotion have anti-inflammatory properties?  

Our goat milk lotion reduces skin inflammation due to its fat protein content found in the milk we use. The cream in goat’s milk is a moisturizer, soothing dry and damaged skin, possessing an anti-inflammatory effect. Goat’s milk does not leave your skin feeling dry or irritated; it leaves you feeling naturally clean and smooth

Can goat milk lotion expire?

We have a bottle of lotion from our first batch we ever made which was 3 years ago and it is still as perfect as the day we made it. We recommend that you use up all your lotion within 1 year of purchase.

Our goat milk lotion is extremely similar to our soap as our Goat milk contains vitamins and other skin nourishing nutrients-  Vitamins C, D, B and A, as well as zinc, proteins, fatty acids and iron that are absorbed into the skin. We sat down with her to discuss new soaps, upcoming events, and why Monkey Farts is a popular variety of her premium line of goat milk soaps.

You always seem to have something new in the shop. Are you carrying any new varieties of goat milk soap currently?

Jamie: We have 3 new soaps coming out in July that can be found at the People’s Choice Festival – Coconut Lime (pictured above), Vanilla Fig and Rustic Woods. All three are made with our same great nourishing goat milk soap recipe that contains enormous amounts of vitamins and minerals that keep your skin healthy and moisturized.

You offer a wide variety of different goat milk soaps. What are 3 of your most popular soaps?

Jamie: Our 3 most popular goat milk soaps are Energy, Monkey Farts, and Lemongrass Sage. Energy is scented with a stimulating blend of citrus that is refreshing in the morning. It has been a best seller since we introduced it.  Monkey Farts is a blend of tropical fruits and banana that kids, adults and the young at heart love. This confetti soap smells just as good as it looks.  Lemongrass Sage is a refreshing lemon and sage soap that includes poppy seeds for an exfoliant. It is great for the laundry room or mudroom sink to get those working hands clean. All our goat milk soaps are colorful, smell great and are great for your skin - and that is why people love them. They are high quality, moisturizing, and long lasting with luxurious creamy lather.

Do you have any plans for new varieties of goat milk soap to produce in the future? 

Jamie: We do have some exciting plans to make a line of all natural essential oil soaps. Scented with essential oils and colored with plant based colorants, we hope to have this line out for the holiday season.

Happy goats make better milk - describe the life of a goat at Whitetail Lane Farm.

Jamie: Our dwarf Nigerian goats are more like pets to us than they are ‘producers of goat milk’. Our goats are free to roam our property during the day, grazing on our lush pastures and eating brush in the fence rows. Their favorite treats are poison ivy and raspberry bushes. At the day’s end they are brought into their pasture for the night to protect them from any predators that might be around. They are given fresh hay and water daily. Pregnant/nanny does and goat kids are given grain. The goats have a posh life at our farm and are happy to greet visitors - they love attention from anyone that is willing to give it.

What’s in Whitetail Lane Farm’s goat milk soap?

Jamie: We’re often asked how much milk is in each bar of our goat milk soap. There is more than 1 ounce (1.18 ounces to be exact) of goat milk in each of our bars of goat milk soap! That is a lot of goodness benefiting your skin! 

We make all of our goat milk soaps completely from scratch, using raw ingredients and recipes that we have created. All of our products come with the ingredients listed on each individual package.

Here are some of the ingredients used to make a bar of Whitetail Lane Farm’s goat milk soap:

Olive Oil - Extremely Moisturizing, makes a nice slippery lather, has low cleansing properties that make the bar nice an mild for those with sensitive skin.

Coconut Oil - Provides lots of lather and large fluffy bubbles, is high cleansing and makes the bar hard

Palm Oil - makes a nice mild lather and helps to make a hard bar. All of our palm is from sustainable farms in the USA. 

Avocado Oil - a rich moisturizing oil that is high in vitamin E and other vitamins and minerals.

Castor Oil - A thick clear oil that provides a nice creamy lather.

Shea Butter - adds a lotion like lather, heavy duty moisturizer

Goat Milk - Goat’s milk is a natural emollient that helps soothe and moisturize the skin. It contains vitamins A, B6, B12 and E. Goat’s milk has 3 times more beta-casein than cow’s milk. Caseins are easily absorbed into the skin and allow for quick hydration of dry skin. It adds lots of vitamin and nutrients and makes a fantastic, creamy, moisturizing soap. 

We use both fragrance oils in our soaps as well as essential oils too. Essential oils are all natural oil extracts from plant matter and many are thought to have therapeutic qualities. Fragrance oils are synthetic oils that are created in a lab to mimic other smells. All our fragrances are Phthalate Free and skin safe.

What’s the number one reason to try goat milk soap?

Jamie: We usually answer this question with ‘Why not?’ We believe that once you use our goat milk soap you will not go back to any of those other soaps. When we started making our soaps it took many months perfecting our current recipe to get a hard bar that was nourishing for the skin and fun to look at. We use 100% goats milk in our bars instead of water. Using a high concentration of goats milk allows our recipe to be superior, highly nourishing with an amazing creamy lather.  

Will you be appearing at any festivals this summer?

We will be at the People’s Choice Festival in Boalsburg,  which is in July. We will also be at Hartslog Days in Alexandria, PA, and the stocking stuffer event at the Centre County Historical Society. Our biggest is our Annual Open House the Saturday After Thanksgiving.

Goat Milk Soap Fact #1: Goat milk soap and goat milk lotion improve your skin’s complexion 

“Goat Milk Soap is the best soap that you can use for your skin,” Cunningham says. “Our soaps are made with all natural ingredients and milk from our own herd of goats. It gently cleanses your skin but has no drying detergents like regular store bought soaps. It’s great for dry, acne and problem skin. Goat Milk Soap Fact #3: It helps to rid the body of dead skin cells 

It’s true - experts believe that the lactic acid naturally found in goats milk give it perfect exfoliating properties.  

“Goat Milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids (lactic acids) that help break down dead skin cells. Alpha-hydroxy acids are great at exfoliating and as you exfoliate they increase the blood flow to that area, rejuvenating the skin,” Cunningham notes. “Over time, if dead skin cells are left on the skin they will build up on the surface causing your skin to age. Many of our soap users have told us that their skin feels smoother after using our soap.” 

Goat Milk Soap Fact #4: It helps to brighten your skin’s tone 

Lactic acid strikes again! This gentle process helps to make your skin look and feel younger. You may even find your need for moisturizers diminishing due to the beneficial aspects of your goat milk soap and lotion.  

“Goat Milk has proteins that are known to reduce hyper pigmentation and darkening of the skin. Using goat milk soap on a daily basis will remove those unwanted dead skin cells leaving your skin with that desired youthful appearance,” Cunningham says. Goat Milk Soap Fact #8: It is naturally anti-bacterial 

“Goat milk does have anti-bacterial properties that can eliminate or reduce acne altogether, also helping to reduce the swelling and itching that acne can cause. Goat milk is also known to have extra proteins that neutralize acne causing bacteria.”

Vitamin A has been shown to help repair damaged skin, helping to give goat milk soap and lotions anti-aging properties. Goat milk soap has much more than just vitamin A though.

“Goat milk is unique in that it contains a fat molecule that not only moisturizes your skin but has anti-inflammatory properties,” Cunningham says. “It helps to soothe irritated skin and prevent further swelling. Similar to how goat milk has been linked to reducing stomach issues and reactions, the same properties can be absorbed through the skin soaking up those same benefits.”  

Goat Milk Soap Fact #15: Way better than regular factory soap 

“Often times factory made soap are made with cheap ingredients that you can’t pronounce, harsh chemicals and detergents that are drying and irritating. They strip the good qualities of soap to use in other more profitable products,” Cunningham says. “On the other hand, our goat milk soaps are created with oils, milk and lye that do not contain these harsh ingredients. Our handmade goat milk soap provides great chemical free options that have many benefits listed above.” 

Steps to making goat milk soap 

Our recipe combines luxurious oils with goat milk and lye to create a hard, long lasting, and good for your skin bar of soap. Each batch is weighed, hand mixed and hand poured in small batches. We use the cold process method and it involves mixing purified lye and frozen goat milk with our oil mix (We use palm oil, olive oil and coconut oil, Avocado oil, Shea butter and Castor Oil.) Once the soap mixture has been blended to trace we add fragrance oils to lightly scent the goat milk soap. The soap is then poured into molds and let to set overnight. The following day we cut the loaves into 5 ounce bars and it is left to cured for around 5 weeks. Before packing we check each bar to make sure their appearance, pH, scent and weight are up to our standards.  
 

Whitetail Lane Farm’s Suggested                   Beginner Soap Recipe:

Ingredients

7 oz. Coconut Oil 

12 oz. Palm Oil

15 oz. Olive Oil

4.6 oz. Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)

11. oz. Frozen Goat Milk 

Materials​

Protective clothing​

Large mixing bucket

​Stick ​

Blender

Lye Bucket

Lye (sodium hydroxide)​

2 spatulas

​Frozen Goat Milk 

Colorant

Fragrance oil

​Mold - Can be as simple as a box lined with parchment paper or a silicone mold. 

Preparation

~ Put on protective clothing – gloves, soap jacket, hair net

~ Weigh out oils in large bucket, set aside. Weigh out frozen ​ goat milk in lye bucket. Weigh out lye in lye container. Add LYE to frozen goat milk and mix well until completely incorporated. Check on back of spatula to make sure all lye is dissolved

~ Add lye mixture to oils. Blend until a light trace

~ Add colorant and fragrance oil, mix until a medium trace. Add in poppy seeds and stir with a spatula.

~ Pour mixture into mold, evenly spreading throughout the mold

~ Spray tops with rubbing alcohol

~ Let sit for 24 hours, un-mold and cut into desired slices​

Jamie Cunningham is the owner and chief soaper at the farm. She oversees all the soap production, and is excited about the new offerings.

“The coconut bar has a fresh coconut aroma that will remind you of sitting on the beach, similar to sun tan lotion. The almond is slightly cherry but is reminiscent of almonds straight out of the field,” Jamie says.

“Our charcoal bar is unscented and includes activated charcoal — a natural detoxifying agent. This bar is perfect for oily skin as it works to absorb oil and dirt from the pores in your skin. It’s also naturally antibacterial.”

Ever since I have been making soap, I get the question all the time of "can I have your soap recipe?" Now, asking a soaper for their soap recipe is like asking if you can have my first born child - not going to happen! Soapers spend years developing and testing their one of a kind soap recipe and it is priceless to them. 16 ounce Coconut Oil

18 ounces of frozen Goat Milk

7.4 Ounces Lye
