Visit the sampling Airstream caravan at the festival’s opening weekend at Whitstable Habour and you’ll be amongst the first in the UK to enter your photograph into its national competition to find the most inspiring stretch of the British coast. Whether you’re a professional photographer or just enjoy getting snap happy at the weekend, your photograph will help build an amazing interactive map of the UK and Irish coast which will allow you to travel along the coastline revisiting the beaches of your childhood and finding new beauty spots.

Whitstable High Street Shopping

When you visit Whitstable you’ll notice there are some very interesting unique and ‘boutique’ shops, which is one of the reasons Whitstable came top in the recent ‘Clone town’ award.

Whitstable is made up of one main street which starts from ‘Oxford Street’, leads into the High Street and ends with Harbour Street where most of the boutique shops and art galleries are located. There’s also great collection of local producers, designers, artists and independent local retailers at the new Whitstable ‘Harbour Village’ which is located on the South Quay, in the heart of Whitstable Harbour.

However, it’s worth walking along from the beginning of ‘Oxford street’ [From the Railway Arch as you enter the town centre] as you’ll still find some more interesting shops which can easily be missed.

Straight after the Railway arch as you enter Oxford Street, you’ll find ‘Warehams’ which offers unique Garden ornaments. A little further along is ‘A Bon App-Sweet’ who sell lots of fabulous vintage sweets just like the old days where sweets are on display in big jars!

A short distance along Oxford Street, opposite the Library and past the Co-Operative Food supermarket, is a small and charming antique shop called ‘L’Image’. On the other side of the road is the ‘Archive Film Centre’ where you can hire the latest DVD’s and have a drank and a bite to eat in their Film Café. A few doors along you’ll find Evolution Health who specialise in Chiropractic, Aromatherapy, Homeopathy & Reflexology services.

Further along past the library and just opposite Nelson road, is ‘Herbaceous’ which is an independent herbs and wholefood shop and also selling eco-friendly cleaning products, Fair Trade goods and a wide range of gifts.

A few yards further you’ll find ‘Oxford Street Books’ who specialise in the buying and selling of 2nd hand books. Across the road there is a shop specialising in Stamps.

Now well into the middle of Whitstable on Oxford Street, a few doors down from the Whitstable Umbrella Centre, you’ll find ‘Whitstable Interiors’, who specialise in reclaimed and reconditioned furniture for the home.

On the opposite side of the street is ‘Whitstable Framing’, specialising in a complete picture-framing service including mount cutting, repairs, cleaning and fixtures plus features ‘The View’, Whitstable’s smallest picture gallery

‘Kite and things’ is located a little further down on the same side of the road, a shop which specialises in Kites, air toys, skate & mountain boards. A short distance further down the High Street is ‘Herbert’s Cycle Shop’ which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2009. They focus on a wide range of cycle products starting from great value entry-level cycles to the latest specialist carbon-fibre mountain and road bikes.

Opposite Herbert’s Cycle Shop is ‘AD3000’, an excellent independent Computer Shop who specialise in supporting individuals, businesses and schools in the local area.

Next door you’ll find ‘Dance Wardrobe’, another independent shop which specialises in dancewear together with dance gifts and footwear.

A few minutes walk further down the High Street is ‘W. Holden’, a local independent jewellery shop. They pride themselves in being one of Whitstable's longest established shops, specialising in jewellery, silverware & pewter, watches, clocks and barometers.

Opposite, next to the bus stop is ‘Wooley’s Menswear’ which is associated with ‘Wooleys’ Shoe Shop’ at no 58 Oxford Street on the opposite side of the road, another long established shop which opened in 1914.

Midway down the High Street are various chain stores such as ‘Cotton Traders’ [Clothing], ‘Stead & Simpson’ [Shoes], ‘Mackays or M&Co’ [Clothing], ‘Whites of Kent’ [Underwear & Linen], ‘Budgens ‘[Groceries], ‘Boots’ [Health & Beauty], ‘Thomas Cook’ [Travel agents] and ‘Clinton Cards’ [Cards & gifts].

Past Budgens supermarket and opposite ‘Cains Amusement arcade’ is ‘Rook and Sons Butchers’. This is a fabulous family run butchers. Not only can you buy meat and meat products in the shops but you can also buy your meat online and have your meat delivered.

Heading further along the High Street is ‘Taking the Plunge’, next to the Royal Navy Reserve Pub. Taking the Plunge is a unique collection of sea side paraphernalia plus jewellery and homeware.

Nearing the end of the High street and blending into Harbour Street, you’ll find ‘Georges Mini-Market’ which is one of those shops that comes in handy when on holiday and you’ve forgotten something! They sell Cosmetics, Household goods, Giftware and Seasonal paraphernalia such as Lilo’s and beach shoes in the Summer to Christmas decorations in Winter.

Before proceeding onto Harbour Street you’ll find ‘Lyre Studio Jewellers’ who specialise in gemstone jewellery set in silver or gold. On the opposite side of the road is the recent addition of ‘Whitstable Wineshack’, plus ‘Whitstable Lavender’ who specialise in Lavender fragrances, gifts & health products,

Finally, at the end of the High Street, the road continues onto Horsebridge Road where you’ll find the Horsebridge community centre plus 2 other shops to note. On the corner of Terry’s Lane and Horsebridge Road is ‘Mastercraft’ who specialise in bespoke arts and crafts. Next door you’ll find a lovely women’s clothes shop called ‘Pink Flamingo Boutique’, who specialise brands such as tfnc, Kitsch Kitchen, Max C, Darling.

In conclusion, Whitstable High Street has some fabulous unique and independent shopping experiences on offer. Next week, we’ll be covering the shopping on offer in and around Harbour Street. Enjoy!

Whitstable, Kent is the best performing “home town”

Whitstable has recently been highlighted in the National Press, as having a unique high Street as opposed to the the ‘sameness' associated with most town centres.

This is according to the widest ever 'Clone Town' survey results released this month by leading independent think-tank nef (new economics foundation).

Whitstable was within the 36 per cent to have more than a third of its shops independent, seperating itself from the commonplace shopping experience seen elsewhere.

With the recent addition of Costa Coffee and pending addition of Wetherspoons, lets hope Whitstable can continue to keep being different!

Looking for somewhere to walk the dog during a visit to Whitstable or whilst staying nearby? www.dogpeople.co.uk might just help (and with places to stay or eat out with your dogs too). Their Walks Directory has information on dog friendly walking routes across the UK with by far the most in Kent – as the company, and Hamish (its inspiration) are based there.

There’s information on beach walks (including sections of The Saxon Shore Way) provided by Canterbury City Council (2003), Duncan Down (overlooking the town and sea), Clowes Wood (including a section of The Crab and Winkle Line) and a variety of routes in nearby Blean Woods and from Boughton under Blean. Hopefully you’ll find something for a ‘convenience walk’ through to several hours walking for the dogs and family.

Whitstable Regatta – Saturday 31st July & Sunday 1st August 2010
Whitstable’s first Regatta was held on 7th August 1792 between 26 boats from Whitstable and Faversham to test the boating skills of the local boatmen and sailors. To celebrate this annual event, Whitstable is filled with fairground rides, food & craft stalls plus there is usually a fly by display by Team Guinot Wingwalkers off Tankerton Slopes. Whitstable Carnival – 7th August
The Whitstable carnival celebrates its 113 years old tradition. Local businesses and organisations put on a great spectacle of sound and colour. The parade will start promptly at 5pm from Pier Avenue and will make its way through Tankerton and Whitstable and finish in Saddleton Road at around 8pm. The procession passes Tower Parade at about 5.20, Harbour Street at 5.45 and Oxford Street at about 6pm

Whitstable Harbour Day – Saturday, 14th August
An event where vessels of various types can compete from 2pm. Various displays and activities will be available throughout the day.

This coming weekend sees the return of Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club Regatta held on Tankerton slopes overlooking the sea. The event starts 11o'clock on Saturday and finishes about 5 o'clock on Sunday 9th August.

This is a fantastic weekend event with fair ground rides, sailing races, food stalls, a fly past by Team Guinot Wingwalkers and a fireworks display on Saturday evening.

This is what the Canterbury Information centre have to say about the event:

"The first Regatta was run on Tuesday 7th August 1792 between 26 boats from Whitstable and Faversham to test the boating skills of the local boatmen and sailors. It has taken place every year since with the exception of the two world wars. It is possibly the oldest event of it type in the world."

It’s that time of year again, folks…Whitstable Oyster Festival kicks off this coming weekend starting on Saturdays 18th July, 2009.

Whitstable Beaches, Kent, UK

Whitstable has some of the most quintessentially English beaches in the UK, with pubs, restaurants and ice cream parlours all within walking distance of the beaches.

If you’re coming to Whitstable for a day Trip, why not first check out the live webcam of Whitstable seaviews to see what the weather is like before you leave.

The beaches around Whitstable are all family friendly and very clean, with a ‘Blue Flag’ award for highest quality in water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management.

Dogs are not allowed off the lead between May and September and there are plenty of foul bins dotted around if you do have dogs.

The beaches are pebbly so make sure you bring a rug or deck chairs.

Two of the most popular beaches are shown below on the map highlighted by a blue bubble. These 2 beaches are:

Cushings view
Aptly named after the actor and much-loved Whitstable resident, Peter Cushing. It is said he liked to sit here and enjoy the view, particularly the stunning sunsets! Cushing's View is the most central point of Whitstable's beaches. There are restaurants, pubs and ice cream parlours literally within a minutes walk so it becomes very popular in the summer. There is a car park right in front of the beach so worth getting here early to avoid walking from the next nearest car park.

Tankerton slopes
This is the area where you can really spread out, and get away from the crowds. There’s wide grass areas which slopes down to a walk way in front of the long beach. There’s a café and ice cream parlour in the middle of the grassy slopes and parking is available along the top on Marine Parade.
