Beauty takes no holiday.

December, particularly the latter half, is the busiest time of the year for many plastic surgeons, cosmetic dermatologists and doctors who perform weight-loss operations like gastric bypass. Some doctors say they do twice as many of these elective procedures per day in this period as during the rest of the year.

The reason: After many cosmetic procedures patients want to go underground during the days-long recovery period, which might involve swelling, bruising and oozing. The holiday season makes it easier to avoid interacting with others at work or in school car pools. This year, with Christmas and New Year's both falling on weekends, a patient can be under the knife or laser beams early in the week and still be presentable by the time the parties start.

"People like to hide out while they heal," says Debra Jaliman, a dermatologist in New York City. This week, Dr. Jaliman says she is scheduled to perform 15 Fraxel procedures, a laser process meant to leave the skin looking younger. Normally she does five a week.

Traci Slatton, a 48-year-old writer in New York, scheduled an appointment with Dr. Jaliman for Tuesday to have a Fraxel treatment that can leave one's skin swollen, red and scabby for four or five days. She wants to look great for a March event to celebrate the publication of "The Art of Life," the book she wrote with her husband, the sculptor Sabin Howard, about the role of beauty in art.

The laser procedure "feels like heated rubber bands snapping against your skin," says Ms. Slatton.

With school on break this week, Ms. Slatton says she doesn't have to worry about seeing other parents while dropping off her daughter. And most of her friends are out of town. "I have enough time to heal and be fabulized for New Year's Eve," she says.

Health insurance can be another reason that demand rises for certain elective surgeries in December. In the case of bariatric surgery, for instance, people might have met their insurance plan's annual deductible and want to have the operation before year end.

A bariatric operation, which reduces the size of the stomach and can lead to dramatic weight loss, can cost about $35,000, including hospital charges, says Michael H. Wood, medical director of the bariatric surgery program at Detroit Medical Center's Harper University Hospital.

Dr. Wood says that compared with an average month, the number of bariatric operations he expects his surgery group to perform in December will be up about 10%. For the full year, he estimates the group will do about 600 of the surgeries. "Patients do want to fly under the radar and they can do that during the holidays," he says.

For plastic surgeons, the most popular procedures for December are those that require the most time for healing, like face-lifts. Franklin Rose, a plastic surgeon in Houston, says this month has been his busiest ever. He performed about 20 operations a week, twice the norm during the year. He routinely was operating well into the night, missing out on visits to the gym and attending holiday parties with family. "With surgeons in December, you can have some unhappy wives," Dr. Rose says.

The cosmetic procedure Ms. Slatton had done is called Fraxel Dual, which costs about $1,000 per treatment. A person with both uneven skin texture and a lot of freckles and sunspots might require up to six treatments.

Fraxel treatments are intended to smooth the texture of the skin as it eliminates sunspots and other skin discolorations. The procedure takes about 15 minutes during which lasers pass over the skin, poking tiny holes in the top layer of the skin. This stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that makes the skin look supple and youthful. The top layer of skin eventually dissipates, taking with it the sun-damaged pigmentation, says Dr. Jaliman.

Fraxel technology comes from Solta Medical Inc., of Hayward, Calif. The company's newest product is called Clear + Brilliant, a laser procedure based on the Fraxel system, says Stephen Fanning, Solta Medical's chief executive. Mr. Fanning says the company is marketing Clear + Brilliant to women between 25 and 40 years old who may not yet need Fraxel Dual. Clear + Brilliant costs about $400 a treatment, with most people needing three or four procedures, or sometimes more.

Dr. Jaliman says that among her clientele, the draw of Clear + Brilliant isn't the lower price but the quicker recovery from the swelling and redness. But she adds, "you're still not going to a party right after."

Here are some top-ranked procedures performed by members of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS).

· As anti-aging is always top of mind at the start of a new year, you may be interested to know 82 percent of ASDS members performed injectable neurotoxin procedures overall in 2010, according to the 2010 ASDS members’ procedures survey. Specifically, 82 percent used Botox (over 1 million procedures done in 2010) and 45 percent used Dysport (over 293,000 procedures in 2010).

· Ninety-four percent of ASDS members performed skin cancer treatments procedures accounting for 3.1 million procedures in 2010. ASDS members are dermatology experts that have unique training and experience to treat the health, function and beauty of skin. ASDS members recommend that you apply sunscreen, get skin checked annually and follow skin care tips to protect skin.

· Since fat reduction is one of the top New Year’s resolutions, you’ll be interested to know that, according to the survey results, tumescent liposuction accounts for over 50 percent of all body sculpting procedures performed by ASDS members in 2010. In fact, tumescent liposuction was invented by ASDS member Dr. Jeffrey Klein.

It’s important to remember that all cosmetic procedures are medical procedures, and as such, the ASDS urges consumers to recognize that they should be performed by a qualified physician or under the close supervision of an appropriately trained physician.

I'm loving these two Happy Booster products I was sent. This is the blush in Rose- I wish I had the other shade in Natural to do a comparison swatch. This has a ton of pigmentation so I recommend using a light hand while applying it to your cheeks. In all honesty, I didn't know if I was going to like this color but somehow it worked really well with my skintone and I was pleasantly surprised (see FOTD pictures at the end of this post). It is a warmer pink that can turn slightly peachy, which might work well with most skintones.

Bronzer 101 – the power of 3

Bronzer can be applied anywhere the sun would naturally hit your face - a bit on the nose, cheekbones, etc. For a more concrete application method, I like to create a "3" by swiping from the temple to the cheek to the jawline. No matter WHAT - always, always, always blend bronzer well and extend to neck and ears. There is nothing worse than an obvious line where your product ends and natural skin tone begins. Hope this helps!

Use bronzers to give yourself high cheek bones and a thinner face – no surgery required!

Select an illuminating shade and apply on cheek bones, down the bridge of the nose and on the chin to create dimension and "slim" facial features. Voila!

In love with bronzers? Make it a year ‘round affair!

Personally I like a little color all year round, so I wear bronzer throughout the winter. It perks up the skin and makes you look refreshed. However, if you are afraid that your current bronzer might be a bit too dark (ie. too fake-looking) for the cooler months, try a lighter shade. If in the summer you might wear light to medium, bump it down to fair to light for more natural looking color.

What’s the best shade of blush?

I tend to think blush is a fun cosmetic to play around with, regardless of hair color. A pop of pink or a punch of apricot will instantly wake up the face. I am a huge fan of mechanical (or "twist-up") eyeliners. I am constantly on the hunt for waterproof mechanical pencils. I found another winner!! Well, technically I found three of them :)

In my FOTD, I use the purple shade and smudged it then applied the black to my upper-rim and close to the top-roots of my lashes. I put the purple on my lower waterline and espresso (brown) on the outer bottom corners. TALK ABOUT WATERPROOF! These are amazing! First of all, they go on soo soo silky and smooth- like butter. Once they dry, they don't budge. Plus. they are not irritating at all.

I've seen this mascara around the blogs and I was curious to try it out. In my opinion, a girl can never own too many mascaras! First off, the brush is HUGE- so if you aren't too keen on a large brush, then skip this product altogether. I was surprised at how much I liked this mascara. It actually held my curl and it isn't waterproof! It separates, lengthens and thickens. Now, my only rant is that it does smudge and you CAN cry this off (count on me in my third trimester of hormonal and emotional pregnancy to test that). It does not make your lashes crispy or hard, in fact it has ingredients that actually soothes and moisturizes. In the picture below I compare the size of the brush to a mechanical eye pencil.

I do like this bronzer but not as much as the Happy Booster one. This is so light it adds some color to the skin, but it is a little on the yellow side unfortunately. I used this after my foundation and powder, it gave me some color *NOT BRONZE. Maybe the other shade is more of a bronzer because this doesn't really do anything in the way of contouring or bronzing my skin. With that said, it doesn't mean it's a horrible product- I actually liked that I can put it all over to give me a boost. So for me, it goes after my powder and before my bronzer.

This is a product I didn't think I would like as much as I do- quite unexpected. The shade "Pink Highlighter" is literally a Pepto-Bismol pink! I like that this helps to brighten the skin. If you have alot of "brown-spots" or "sun-spots" then this is nice to help brighten those spots so they aren't as apparent. It is a light color-corrector and the makeup glides on really smoothly over it. I am interested in trying Nude!

Is it normal to get acne during pregnancy? Are there any brands/specific products you recommend?

Yes, it is normal to get acne during pregnancy. Many people never break out and then all of a sudden they have a lot of acne. Other people always breakout and their skin clears because of the hormonal shift. What do I recommend to treat acne during pregnancy, a lot of the salicylic acid base washes from Neutrogena are great. Aveeno has for more sensitive skin, the Aveeno Ultra Calming which works very well. I also recommend using mask like chemical peels during pregnancies - professional at the doctor’s office either glycolic or salicylic acid. You can get some prescription drugs like finacea, but that needs the dermatologists consent and the OBGYN consent.

Are there certain ingredients in skincare products that pregnant women should avoid?

Yes, there are certain ingredients that you should avoid. The main ingredient that you should avoid is that you shouldn’t be on oral antibiotics, cause they can harm the babies teeth after the baby is twenty weeks in gestation. In terms of ingredients in skin care products that you should avoid, no retinols, no benzyl peroxides either.

What certain ingredients should pregnant women use?

Your skin gets dryer sometimes during pregnancy, so a lot of my patients like the ultra hydrating formulas. Like the Neutrogena skin relief body lotion, unscented body wash. A lot of people would use things with oatmeal in them cause they are soothing, things with soy in them.

What is Melasama? What causes it? How can it be prevented and treated?

Melasama is caused by walking in the sun and hormonal shift. Is treated with sunscreen, chemical peels and it can be treated with a laser. Its chronic so it can get worse and worse if people don’t put sunblock on. Its significant you’ve seen it much more in women than men, but you can see it in men though.

Stretch marks! How can you prevent them and treat them?

Stretch marks you can prevent them from but not gaining or losing weight, also by not using too heavy weights cause you can get them around your muscle mass as well. If your pregnant try not to over eat, you gain weight slowly, your skin doesn’t stretch as rapidly and that’s how you can prevent them. In terms of treating them its only the fractal that works for them, the topical medications really don’t work for them. It’s good if your belly is growing when you are pregnant to moisturizer it a lot.

The bottom line is that it is better to prevent them by not gaining weight to rapidly. For people that grow taller fast we also treat them with a fractal by the way. So obesity related and height related we treat the same way.

Darkening of the nipples? Is this normal and why does this happen?

Darkening of the nipple during pregnancy, is a hormonal shift and it goes away. Hair grow faster during pregnancy because of the hormones.

Why does hair grow faster during pregnancy?

Unfortunately, it grows faster on your head, underarms and your upper lip.

Being pregnant, my hormones are ALL OVER THE PLACE! This hormonal roller-coaster has caused me to break-out around my chin/lower-cheek area. Many of them are deep, cystic pimples that are almost impossible to treat. How is it even possible to treat hormonal acne? I have always asked that question. Let's Talk About Adult Acne

Not too long ago, the dermatology community believed that only a small percentage of adult women suffered from acne. Today, however, the estimation is closer to 40%. The reasons for this dramatic increase are the emotional stress tied to modern life, hormonal fluctuations, and a greater recognition by the public that period-related blemishes and clogged pores are indeed acne.Pimples on adults are fewer in number but bigger in size, and tend to congregate around the mouth and jaw line.
