Monétique and Band Perform LIVE!

Monétique has been booked to perform their first set of the year on Saturday, April 20th, 2013 at the Tampa Bay International Curry Festival! This performance will include songs from their new EP, "Don't Put Me in a Box", in addition to several covers of classic and current chart toppers. The last time the full band was used was in 2011, just before the duo took a well needed break vocally, and to start crafting the EP (#DPMIAB) in 2012.

After the sabbatical, they have returned, and are in full effect. This set will be focused on merging the gap between the authentic reggae rhythms and their International sound. We hope you are ready for what the twins have in store! Monétique will be followed by another performer at the event, Prime Dinero who will bring his Brooklyn-style rap to the Tampa festival. T-shirts, download cards, and CDs are among the items available at this event. Monétique will be intermingling amongst the crowd before and after their set. If you see the twins, stop them. They want to take a picture with you!

The Curry Festival was initiated to raise funds for local charities in Tampa Bay. This event is set to be huge benefit for the community and all those involved. Although the main event will be both the Amateur and Professional Chefs Curry Cook-off, the goal is to raise as much funds as possible. Grad School is Complete! Where do we go from here?

Attending Full Sail University hasn't always been easy. The road may have been rough, but it has been worth it. Not only has attending school for an Entertainment Business Master's been an adventure, but managing the time to complete the assignments with an already full schedule. I am responsible for contacting businesses in hopes of securing deals, scheduling bookings, rehearsals, appointments, photo shoots, and more... all while attending Full Sail! Working my regular 9 to 5, in addition to 2 other jobs, training for Figure Competitions, rehearsals with the band etc have really challenged my organizational skills. And I love a challenge!

So, today, I will tell you what to expect in the near future from Lady Monarch Productions. We are a music publishing company looking to work with filmmakers, game-developers, television music directors, Radio Music Directors, record label A&Rs, mega-producers seeking talent, and more. We focus on providing services that include Hit songwriting, collaborating with one-of-a kind producers, music publishing, and merchandise sales. If there is a brand that you are trying to promote or endorse, or if there is music that needs to be registered and published, and if you are an Independent artist like myself, then let's network! I will be working with only the talent that the organization deems as marketable, innovative, and ORIGINAL.

Monétique, of Lady Monarch Productions, Inc., is currently being promoted and published. Our agenda is filling up fast as 2013 continues to move forward. We are now singing the National Anthem at the University of South Florida Men's/Women's Basketball games, and now have also been invited to sing for the USF Softball and Baseball games. The current agenda is still being constructed, but I will announce that we will be performing music from the NEW EP "Don't Put Me in a Box" on April 20th, 2013 at the International Curry Festival. We are also going to be published, and the June cover story in LYFE Mag, stay tuned for the highlights of the photo shoot and Interview in 2 weeks! There is another performance in September for a Guianese non-profit organization. Fresh off some performances, including "Krunk for Christ" 2 weeks ago, Monétique performed for the kids in the Tampa Bay community with Michelle B. Patty. This past Friday we performed for MA Girls Rock. "MA" is a non-profit organization that stands for Mama Africana. They mentor girls and provide a support system either through prayer, and/or financially. Feel free to contact us if interested in becoming a mentor, or prayer sponsor. Music Publishing- the AK Way!

Today, I will discuss a couple of ways in which Alicia Keys and her team are utilizing music publishing in effort to promote her album. As we all know, “Girl on Fire” has definitely put Keys back on the map post marriage, pregnancy and childbirth. It was a strong way to enter the music industry by storm. She chose first utilize heavy online social media updates. For example, constantly posting videos from the studio, and pictures during rehearsal was a way to keep the fans and potential fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation. She came out with a viral video for 'New Day', then a “lyric” video, and then finally, an Official video. These videos were published to allow the song to circulate while the music video was being scheduled for shooting. It allowed time for even the music to “grow” on people, if needed, by the time the official music video was released. Check out the links to the videos below.

Next, do you remember seeing Alicia Keys sing at the Superbowl? The next goal was to be as visible as possible for as many major events THIS year. She made an appearance, even if she is not what some would have thought to be the first choice to sing the National Anthem at such an event. Regardless, her team successfully booked her for the gig. Next on the agenda for Alicia was to sing on the GRAMMYs stage. This was a big event for her as well. To allow her new brand to be heard in front of other Industry greats, not just fans.

Most recently, tonight she sang at the NBA All-Star game. She is keeping her appearances regular and also stimulating the buzz consistency. All being said, she is promoting her brand, her new album, “Girl on Fire”, and a Brand New Me [Alicia], as a song on her album says.

She was also sporting a new Reebok creation, with Keys' creative assistance, called the AKW’s, which are not yet set to be released. So, not only is she promoting herself/brand, but also a product to affiliate herself with. This keeps her name on the market for more potential sales, notoriety, fashion sense, and brand significance. These are three points that Alicia used to publish herself in the recent months.

What's going on world? BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Monétique has officially released their debut EP entitled Don't Put Me in a Box this past weekend. It was a momentous occasion for the twin duo (Evette and Evonne Archer) and having their support team in attendance at the album release party definitely elevated their emotions. They have expressed their deepest gratitudes all throughout Facebook. Evonne Archer (of Monétique) even posted the below message:

After 4 months of recording, scheduling photo shoots, meeting with graphic designers, re-recording vocals, etc. the group feels a huge sense of accomplishment. The fact of the matter is, this EP has been in the works for several years. Despite certain hindrances, Monétique met up with new producers and finished the album! This marks the launch of their radio and promo tour. They are currently setting up their schedule of appearances/performances for the year 2013. For this post, I will discuss preparing for an album release. This week was the final week of recording in the studio, so the mixing and mastering has been completed. I’ve read some ideas on what to consider for this release from an article online. The list of things to consider while finalizing this release was the budget and the following:

New Photography
Obtaining Proper Licensing/Copyrights of album
Publishing Flyers (spread the word)
Email Blast
Newspaper Announcement
CD Duplication
Ordering of Merchandise

So, yesterday we had a photo shoot with Christian Bauer of 12 to 12 Productions to wrap up the end of Monétique’s EP “ Don’t Put Me in a Box” which is set to be released 12-21-12. This shoot was actually pretty fun. It was hot, but nevertheless, pretty fun. So over 40 shots of various positioning, color, outfit changes, and lighting, we think we’ve found the album cover! I also read another article that assisted in some additional marketing tips.

As far as just having received the final master of the 7-track EP, that will be sent off to the Copyright Office tonight and registered via Lady Monarch Productions, Inc with ASCAP. ASCAP is the Performance Rights Organization that Lady Monarch Productions, Inc is currently a member of. This will be important because this music will be released everywhere. It is best that we claim our copyright before it gets published to prevent it from being in jeopardy of being used without a license.

The flyers have been designed by DesignWorks360 and printed. Now the hard and more time-consuming part will be to distribute ALL 5,000 within the Tampa Bay area. The email blasts and newspaper announcements all work together for our Marketing Initiatives for this project. The duplication has to be done within the next couple of days in order to have the actual copies by the Album Release Party on 12/23/12. As far as the t-shirts, they have been ordered and will be received by this week. This is very exciting because these shirts will be exclusive to this event! Stay tuned for more news soon.

The Digital world is VERY ELABORATE

Search Engine Optimization is truly more technical than I thought. It merely took me 2 laptops so that I could have several screens open to review the processes of optimizing my websites. Not only do you have to register each page but add certain elements that may include how your site is being monitored in the future. For example, the frequency that your website changes, certain parameters, and how many posts your blog may have etc.

I reviewed how to submit a sitemap via BloggerSentral website. It was exactly what I needed to assist me introducing my website to the digital world even further. As of now, my website was just words typed on a site. You could find me, If I provided you with a link first. But my goal was to be found accidentally!

I researched further and discovered another website, Seomoz. Entitled “The Beginner’s Guide to SEO”, it was sure to assist me in what I needed to get accomplished. Divided in Chapters, starting from how Search Engines Operate, to How Usability, Experience, and Content Affect Ratings, and ending with Measuring and Tracking Success. The Chapter that intrigued me the most was Chapter 7: Growing Popularity and Links. I post what I feel my readers will benefit from. So, here is what I can do to assist you. One important concept from the guide “suggests that the links from sites within a topic-specific community matter more than links from general or off-topic sites (seomoz). Also there is what is called, TrustRank. Due to the amounts of spam on the Internet, certain sites rank higher due to their reputability. Those organizations include Universities, federal websites and/or some non-profit organizations.

Ultimately, I have a lot to learn and this assignment completely intrigued me. I want to maximize my online presence. I’ve added analytics capabilities to my blog, as well as using Google Webmaster tools to upload my sitemap. All in all, this was an experience that I will have to continue to revisit so that I can become more proficient at SEO!

LMP Self-Publishing: Things to Consider (PART TWO)

Self-publishing can be a daunting task, especially if you are not well-prepared. I will continue in this post to elaborate on what I feel should be considered in the process of self-promotion. Make sure the sound/audio quality of the recording is industry-standard or close! Again, you want to be taken seriously. If you can obtain the sound from recording in GarageBand or by investing in a studio that uses Cubase or ProTools, then just get the job done.

Research venues for where you would like your music to be played at the local scene. Do your research, because some venues may look like a cool place to do a show or album-release party, but be totally catered to a genre that doesn’t resemble your sound/music in any way. You want to attempt to choose venues where music that is similar to what you produce. Don’t get me wrong, you want to capture a wide audience, but chances are that more people would be willing to buy your album at the end of the night if they already listen to your style of music. This is very important when you are promoting yourself. There is never an endless supply of funds, especially when we are fronting the bill.

What other items will you make available for sale? Have other ways to bring in money at your shows or on your website. Some ideas are merchandise (i.e. tour shirts, stickers, key chains), the actual EP/album, or even download cards where the fans can purchase the album online by utilizing their individual code to redeem their music. Music Duplication companies (i.e. Oasis and Discmakers), ooshirts, zazzle, Empire Promos, Discount Mug$ and Pinnacle Promotions are some companies that can assist with merchandise.

This next concept may take some time, but I recommend thoroughly establishing your list of contacts through which you can promote your music. I am still, every day compiling my list. They will include videographers, photographers, musicians, producers, artists, radio djs (including online radio), and in my case also TV & Film Music Directors. There is also another way to gather a list of industry contacts that requires a fee. I, however, haven’t utilized that because I want the most up to date information. So, by researching and confirming, you will have the most accurate information. I had a list years ago that was supposed to be updated, and the phone/address of the Industry Executive was not valid. You have to realize that these publications do expire as insiders may change their information even before the publication is mass produced. In due time, I hope to make the proper connects through other people as their direct contact. Everyone knows someone who knows someone. So, just keep in mind you always want to be in the know, and self-publishing is not about being shy. Introduce yourself! You never know who you may meet.

LMP-Self-Publishing: Things To Consider (PART ONE)

When it comes to publishing work, music in this case, many things come into play. First, making sure that work is registered with the United States Copyright Office is important. The sites now have it available to register works online (http://www.copyright.gov/forms/) for $35 without having to mail in ($65 fee) either form: Sound Recording (SR), Performing Arts (PA), Visual Arts (VA), Literary Works (TX) or Single Serials (SE). It is important that all compositions are registered to prevent misuse, defamation of brand, or better yet, anyone else capitalizing financially for their own benefit. You want to make sure you have exclusive rights unless you license it to another entity based on your own terms.

Next, I would make sure any logos or taglines are trademarked as well. The website to Patent and Trademark Office is http://www.uspto.gov/. Your logo is a part of your brand and clarifies what makes the organization different; it is the logo/tagline. I would make sure it is trademarked. It is always better to prevent things from happening than to clean up a mess with litigation and court precedings. If a court case is inevitable, then at least it is registered with the PTO.

Professionalism is how one conducts himself but also what image is portrayed. You want to make sure you try to invest in a professional photo shoot that can capture at least one or two solid band photos. These photos can be used as album covers later, on flyers, on websites, or anytime the press may want to refer to the band. The photos make you appear legitimate and you will be taken more seriously if you do. Decide which avenues to pursue in regards to publishing, and determine what ways they can fit within the budget. Are you going to print flyers and distribute them by hand? Are you creating a street team to help you promote? Will you be using social media to post events on Band Music pages, sending email blasts, creating official press releases, sending the radio stations Public Service Announcements (PSAs) or investing in a promotion company such as Capacity Productions or Reverbnation. Other companies also offer promotional services such as GoogleAds and Facebook marketing.

Social Media and Lawsuits; Song Rights Battle; Marketing Strategies

The first podcast that I reviewed concerned Social Media and Lawsuits. In this podcast, we discover the growing increase of social media within the courts system and legal filings. In this podcast, they discussed employment and legal occurrences. What was very interesting is that it has been used as evidence for both civil and criminal cases. National Law Journal said that Facebook has been a leader or “primary evidence source” for may court cases in the recent months. My thoughts on this podcast and the topic in general is that social media can prove so much, in terms of the dates of postings, images as proof or validity, or even can show a connect between parties by reviewing the message history. All information pretty much is either saved or can likely be recovered once it is needed. A point that was brought up was that lawyers have advised their clients to not delete particular items on Facebook or Twitter because of the potential weight that it can possess in the courtroom. The courts have considered social media to, in some cases, be a viable source.

The second podcast that I listened to was “The New Legal Battle over Song Rights”. I was immediately interested in this based on the title. Within the Music Industry there was a U.S. Copyright Revision in the 70s (1976 Copyright Act). This law “gave many musicians and songwriters termination rights which gave them the rights to reclaim ownership of their recordings after 35 years so long as they apply for ownership at least 2 years in advance of the 35 year timeline.” This means many hits that were written almost 35 years ago could now technically be up for grabs by the artist who can apply to become owner. Sales of catalogue records amount to be a bulk of what provides profits to current record label or music publishers. Quite often, artists initially sign a contract granting rights to the label and music publisher. After 35 years they can apply to terminate their contract and retrieve ownership. This does not include ‘work for hire’ agreements. ‘Work for hire’ means a stipend was paid or payment negotiated for a collective works agreement. If they were work for hire, then the artist is not able to regain copyrights. I think it is great that an artist can have the possibility to retain copyrights after this period of time. Ultimately, I believe it won’t be a quick and easy retrieval because the record label does not want to lose the opportunity to make money. They don’t want to lose rights, especially from big name stars.

Legal Marketing is discussed and the best marketing strategies for lawyers. One strategy is launching a powerful website that is built to engage and increase clientele. Many people look online for what they need. So a strong web presence is key. Lawyers should prove they are an “expert in their field..answer legal issues in their areas…” A lawyer has to prove they can be reliable and be held accountable. Another way is using video marketing. A great way to break down the communication barriers or intimidation factors is to make a lawyer appear approachable. Lawyers can do webinars or just upload video updates that not only showcase his/her skill and expertise, but also his/her personality. Ideally, you want people to want to work with you. This was an insightful podcast. I completely agree with this because I often times are hesitant to approach lawyers regarding anything. This can really ease my communication with them.

My Review of 3 Legal-Focused Podcasts!

The first podcast was regarding the most recent changes in Trademarks and Copyrights laws within the Brazilian market. From this podcast, I've gained a lot of information concerning Intellectual Property. Two interviewees were husband and wife, Walter and Christina Palmer. The upcoming developments first mentioned were PTO restructuring. They are now focusing on eliminating what is not patentable from the beginning. This will reduce the regular 8-9 years down to a projected 4 years time. It was also mentioned that it will create new jobs and positions for the overall unemployed Brazilian market. The greater majority of open positions would be allocated to the Patents, and then shortly followed by the Trademark departments. The next upcoming developments were mentioned concerning the Olympic Act. As some of you may know, Brazil has won the bid for the upcoming Olympic games that takes place in 2016. The Olympic Act prohibits the use of certain phrases, use of the name or brands affiliated with Brazil. This was in effort to prevent Ambush Marketing. Ambush marketing is when many businesses may try to capitalize on the fact that The Olympics in Brazil is going to be such a global commodity. Everyone will want anything to do with possibly being found as a result of the Olympics 2016. Not to mention, the cost of gaining an advertisement spot during the 2016 Olympics will be astronomically high. This podcast also revealed the new modifications Brazil is trying to incorporate in regards to copyright law. The New Fair Use "permit us of copy written material for education" and also permits photocopying if used for educational purposes. This does spark controversy and has not been accepted by a majority of parties. It has not yet been passed. All in all, I really enjoyed this post. In another podcast, I actually learned about the many things that are patentable. This particular podcast reflects finding new cuts of meat, as Tony Mata has done. Other things that ironically are patented is cutting a hotdog and frying it. The thing to remember is that the patent cannot be obvious, but this podcast revealed many odd patents, including the chicken wing patents. There are 8 million patents since 1998, according to NPR.org. Everyday people become more and more original and creative. This is also an interesting concept. I've learned that my brand should be so original that no one can replicate it.

In this last podcast, Matt Krieger is interviewed to discuss the recent changes to Patent Law and what is affected. President Obama passed the AIA into law last September. AIA, the America Invents Act, has now began launching some instrumental..Inner party re-examination is now appearing to be more efficient. The new patent law provides that inner party reviews are constructed in front of Patent Law judges as opposed to Patent Law examiners. The judges are more apt to challenge the patents and make sure that the creation is purely and objectively created. It was very informative. Make sure to gather further information from the podcast.

Recent Controversy!

Hello people! I have read some very controversial things in the media recently and feel as though I should shed some light on a few of them. In browsing, I ran across Lady Gaga. She recently had a show in London, as a part of her current tour, in which she decided to pay homage to a couple of artist that had passed. The first one, thus making this controversial, was her tribute to the late Princess Diana. She said in the article that if she had ever gotten a chance to perform in London, that she would perform a dedication song in remembrance of Princess Diana. According to WENN Entertainment News Wire Service, Lady Gaga said, “Since I was a very young girl, the people’s Princess was the most important person in me and my mother’s life. I swore if I ever had an audience like this in London I would take a moment to appreciate her. This song is called Princess Di-D-I-E..Let’s take a moment to appreciate her presence and what she means.” She then later goes on to tribute the late Amy Winehouse, who passed away in 2011. Personally, I can’t pay a tribute while using a “pun” or play on words. Yes, Princess Diana passed away in 1997, but I can’t believe Gaga, tribute or not, would use such a connotation.

Another item of controversy will be the release of Sinner’s Creed, an upcoming memoir told from the eyes of the lead singer from the band, Creed. Apparently, this is to be a “tell-all” book which is set to be published later this fall. The controversy arises from the amount of information being released to the public. PR Newswire states “’The book describes my childhood, my internal battle with drugs and depression and how I lost control of my life,’ says Scott Stapp”. This book is to unleash unpublished accounts of his battles and how he became sober. It is this reason why he refuses one-on-one interviews. I think this book is controversial but I am also anticipating its release. I do think it can be a coping method and also an insight into how this industry can impact other aspiring artists. The last controversial subject is that of what celebrities do to gain attention. “They often deliberately initiate a controversy to boost their popularity. It is also a fairly standard issue for any upcoming movie to be trapped in a controversy” (Mens XP). Celebrities often do “feel good” campaigns where they contribute to humanity, or also envelop themselves into Social Media. It is now the most popular means of free publicity, but also an effective way to get close to fans. As the title of this article states, I don’t truly believe it is all a “gimmick” but I do sense many artists doing things just because it may bring attention to them. They just so happen to be conveniently timed around a release, launch or celeb party.

Alicia Keys is one of the artists that I have in my Personal Learning Network, or PLN, and I am learning so much from various different perspectives. There is the artist standpoint, the managerial view, the entertainer view, the listener view, and that of the critic. Keys has just recently been focusing a lot of her energies into social networking, which to me, is working to her advantage. She posts quite frequently to her Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook pages.

I read excerpts taken from an interview with Alicia Keys published in VIBE magazine back in April of this year. It’s amazing to see the growth from her as an artist, person, and woman. She truly embodies an ideal representation of how we should be. We should be free: free to make mistakes, free to be real, and, in her words, “I’ve been brave enough to be uncomfortable.” (VIBE Magazine). This is profound. To me, brave enough to be uncomfortable means when conditions don’t seem ideal, I am ready to enter the trenches regardless. It means I am ready to look stupid if it is what makes me happy.

In this article, Alicia speaks on her relationship with mega-producer Swizz Beatz and the story of how they met/evolved. Apparently, there were some signs that they were meant to be together, including a credit card mixup. Swizz ended up with her credit card in his back pocket. She believed it to not be somewhat of a coincidence that it ended up there. Regardless, it’s her story, and she is at the point in her life where she is truly “comfortable in her own skin” (VIBE magazine).

Alicia Keys has become “one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. She’s released five albums, won 14 Grammys and sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.” (VIBE) She has broken boundaries and extended her individuality. She has a unique sound where everyone can tell it is Alicia. She is distinct and she will always be easy to remember. With talent and hard work, Alicia shows they truly pay off. This is motivating!

Music blogs and websites have to grab my attention. They have to be informative and provide information not only first, but also provide news other sources may not even possess. I chose to review one of the top music blogs, www.rapradar.com. Immediately I noticed it was very interactive. The first thing I look for in a website is how interactive it is. There are updates in the music’s rap and hip-hop scene that are regularly posted to this site. Videos are embedded on the page. There are also links that route you to RSS feeds, Twitter, and Facebook Pages. On the right side, there are links to over 80 other blogs, some are well-known, others not-so-much. These are blogs to magazines, businesses, musicians, companies, gossip, etc. It provides you with a little of everything to choose from. Some days we may feel like wanting to know what’s happening on a personal level with a celebrity. Other times we may want to know when he/she is putting out new music. Then there are times when we want to know the ratings of an album before we by it from iTunes, or when the new music video will air. This is just a site that is not only informative, but interactive, reliable, and current.

What I enjoyed most was the music. I’m a musician at heart, so when going to this site, seeing the new music that was posted was wonderful. I never want to feel like I have to search through several websites to find what I want. The website covers who collaborates with who and who discontinued working with who. Ultimately, I am looking to be informed and educated. On the flipside, it did appear a little too dark, as if rap music is depressing. The main background color of the site is black, as with all the postings. I would have liked to see a bit more color to enhance my mood. Too much black makes me become uninterested in the content regardless of how pertinent the information may be to my music search. But all in all, it was a good read!

Interview with Industry Professional, "Eva D."

I met with industry professional Eva D. of Lady Monarch Productions, Inc. today. She is responsible for managing artists associated with LMP. She has her hands full now, but ironically enough, she’s had her hands full for almost 30 years! She has twin daughters, which she carried one in each hand until they were able to walk. As they grew they followed music and according to Eva D. “often replicated Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I remember they sang using a vacuum cleaner. That was their microphone.” Years later, they are now one of the artists she manages, and she wants them to learn first hand, success doesn’t come to those who are lazy, but to those who work hard, have faith in their craft, and never take God out the picture. Here’s how the interview went.

*How did you become interested in managing artists, better yet, entering into this entertainment industry to begin with?

As a young mother, with talented girls who had a desire to someday enter into the music business, I found a way to manage and give them exposure at the same time.

*Have you dealt with opposition? In what way(s)? How did overcome the opposition?

I deal with opposition daily, especially with having a small minority business. Making LMP available to support and help young artists reach and develop a fan base became a struggle. Well, when meeting with artists, I always remind them that success starts with them. I am here just to enhance their abilities and portray their talents the best way I can.

*In negotiating long-term and short-term contractual agreements, how do you set yourself up to win over a potential client?

In meeting with a potential client we review the contract together. While going through the contract, I provide a list of ways I can be of support that they may not be able to possess on their own. Not only do I have insider connections to publish/expose them to, but also am more cost effective because of the fact that I represent an independent company vs. a large label.

*I’m sure you’ve heard of expressing a mutual benefit with another industry professional. How have you sold the mutual benefit idea to either an artist or when pitching your artist to a potential business partner?

I will try to meet as many of their desires as possible while mutually benefitting by obtaining the credit for LMP producing this raw talent the artist receives my professional expertise and exposure. When dealing with labels, I provide the fact that the leg-work is done, the talent was found, it’s a win-win for everybody. With proper exposure, they can make the labels money!

*When negotiating, how do you learn to separate the people from the actual problem, or issue, at hand? Do you find it simple for you to do?

Yes. Before I go into a meeting to negotiate on the proposed agreement, I have already prepared the list of the main issues at hand. Then when I meet with a potential client, I will focus on my list instead of the actual person with whom I’m meeting. I understand their issues are what need to be resolved as opposed to them as a person. Negotiation is only a means to get both an understanding and benefit. It is only human when emotions come into play. I just choose to focus on the problem at hand.

Apple tries to keep Spotify out of U.S.!

I stumbled across a current event from The Music Void.com, entitled “Parker: Apple tried to keep Spotify out of the U.S.” Sean Parker is Spotify’s director and according to the article, he states that Apple saw Spotify as a potential competitor because of how it could impact the music industry and Apple’s sales. Parker said, “…Apple was threatened by what we were doing.”

Spotify , according to Wikipedia.com, is a “Swedish music streaming service offering digitally restricted streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal”. What I did learn about Spotify, is that it can be compared or contrasted with iTunes. However, Spotify works across so many more systems than Mac OS X, but also Microsoft Windows, Linux, and other mobile devices including Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Android, and so many other mobile devices. It is incomparable to iTunes in that respect; it is available/accessible across so many other mediums. To me, it seems like it does have a “leg up” on Apple, and I can see why Apple may have been threatened.

The CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, speaks of the tension between Apple and Spotify is a bit embellished. As we know, anytime the media can exaggerate stories, they take advantage of the opportunities. It not only adds drama, which captures attention from a great deal of people, but also makes us aware of a new business entering the market. Spotify, was doing just that. Spotify wanted to become the brand, the company, and the product/service that was going to compete against the best in the industry. Apple is at the top and the one to beat.

To conclude, this article did enlighten me to something predictable, but also something I was completely unaware of. Spotify is very popular overseas and for a few years was trying to expand into America. I have learned of a “tension” that I never knew existed, however, according to Ek, it is a little dramatized. I’m glad that I ran across this article. It was a pleasure read!

TED.com Speaker on Overcoming Adversity

The speaker, Chris Anderson, in the TED.com video truly did inspire an audience both directly and indirectly. The studio audience could feel first hand how inspiring the future looks for all of us. The indirect audience, via the web, can also feel inspired. It looks very bright the way technology has expanded and broken the barriers that were initially in place. An example from the video that comes to mind was the fact of how watching video online has evolved from impossibly too large to upload to now watching billions of hours through companies like Youtube. Another example is when he even said we’ve evolved to the age of face-to-face communication via online video chat. Years ago, today was considered unheard of. Through the change, we have overcome adversity.

A significant event from the video was towards the end when there was an excerpt telling the story of Christopher Makau, of TED Kibera. He tells about self-help groups, transforming a trash site to now growing vegetables….and also establishing a film school where learning takes place. Knowledge and growth is now flourishing where robberies and waste were originally taking over. The speaker shared this knowledge to us and gave us a deeper understanding of how important it is to develop a following, or “crowd” (TED.com), have ideas, or “light” (TED.com), and passion, or “desire” (TED.com).

The explosion of “Little Demon”, the Youtube dancer sensation, inspired a creation of a dance troupe that led to their appearance on the Oscars. Anderson built trust through his inspiration, leadership by allowing us to gain awareness to what life has become. He also shed light on the limitless possibilities of the future, and that excites all who will hear. Lastly, Anderson demonstrated that viral can make something big, even greater. The way that his speeches are now available in several languages has shown how his following has gotten behind him and now. Going global allows one to be heard across several other cultural regions as your idea continues to spread to an even larger audience. It’s amazing!

The MPAA...and What it Has to do with the Music Industry

The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc., MPAA, was created by a group of movie producers and distributors in 1922 with the intent to create a more positive appearance for the film industry. By the late 1960s, Jack Valenti became President of the MPAA. The Association created The Production Code, or Hays Code, to invoke self-censorship. According to mpaa.org, it mandated that all films be reviewed for material deemed as “offensive” prior to their release. When Valenti had become President, adjustments were made to this Code because he “founded the voluntary film rating system giving creative and artistic freedoms to filmmakers while fulfilling its core purpose of informing parents about the content of films so they can determine what movies are appropriate for their kids.” (mpaa.org, History).

A major program in place is the protection of creative works. MPAA has established Public Awareness Campaigns to prevent and decrease movie theft. “Often these efforts are focused on the creation of local, targeted initiatives that combine legislation, the dedication of law enforcement and a consumer awareness campaign to curtail film theft and raise awareness about the problem in cities, states, and countries around the world.” (mpaa.org, Public Service Announcements). The website brings to light to Rogue websites which traffic stolen information or products over the Internet. This is very important to the music industry because part of the film’s project is to develop a soundtrack. So, just as movies are stolen from the Internet, the music is as well, each time a movie is illegally downloaded. That is another opportunity for the artist, in addition to the actors, producers, and directors, to not receive residual income for their work. We realize the much is affected by stolen property: jobs, compensation and safety (i.e. malware).

Other programs in place raise awareness is Camcorder Laws, Copyright Infringement, the different types of Content Theft, and education, and also a link to view tv shows and movies legally. Apparently in forty-one states, cam-cording a federal felony. I do believe, these programs are very positive not only for the film industry but the music industry as well. As a direct correlation with my industry, the initiatives from the coalitions and preventative measures seem to enhance the awareness of illegal activity, thus limiting the opportunities of theft. I will continue to follow up on the programs the MPAA have in place. I found it very interesting with the magnitude of steps being taken. (mpaa.org; Camcorder Laws, Rogue websites).

My music career...and those who inspired my passion!

I aspire to become very critical behind the scenes in my career within the music industry. My career path is not clear, nor direct but I do intend on having, and encourage, the obstacles that will try to hinder my success or progress. Emotionally, I am drawn to music. Spiritually, it does something within me that is mood altering. It is very successful in doing something that, other than the Bible, I have found no other tangible thing to do: take me to a place where I feel content. I want to take others to that same place in the near future.

My professional interests are to become a world-renown music producer, publisher, and songwriter. The following musicians are some that I think of who are known internationally for their craft: Akon, Beyoncé, Adele, Lady Gaga, and Lil Wayne. Each has depicted who they are as an artist and has travelled across the globe to tell their story. Akon, whose story originates from Senegal, has an amazing story to tell. According to the MTVmusic.com biography, he discovered hip hop at the age of seven when he moved to New Jersey from West Africa. His imprisonment sparked creativity on his part that allowed his album release to be very successful. I know when I saw and heard Young Jeezy's "Soul Survivor", I was intrigued by this voice. That smooth voice I heard, I started hearing on more hip hop tracks. That was when I discovered Akon, who is actually makes "world-music". His songs carry a sense of hope, encouragement, and light. He has helped to mold my passion and professional interests.

Beyoncé is known for powerful vocals, amazing dance ability, and being a solid stage entertainer. She has been an inspiration for me for years because of how effortless she appears during any performance. She has motivated me to shoot for greatness and work extremely hard for success, because it's not guaranteed. In her "The Year of 4" documentary, she highlights elements such as the ups and downs, the moments of energy and the moments of extreme fatigue, the traveling every night in a new city, and the putting a smile on because she acknowledges the fans have made her successful. She truly is a global inspiration for fans and also those seeking to get in the music industry. Please check out her mini-documentary and view a glimpse of her amazing craft.

It is my desire to be as, or more successful, than these artists. Technically, there is a niche for all of us, we just have to aspire and put thoughts/dreams into action. I want to be an artist, but also work with other artists. I want to work on the foundation and support, i.e. providing the musical production and reference vocals for top songs on the Billboards, and most importantly I want to break into the television and film industry and submit music to these projects. My passion in the television industry is to truly make the scene come alive! I am very excited to see my career evolve and my passion blossom.

Publish Your Own Music-- Keep all the Royalties

As a music publisher, it is important to think of the ways to promote a brand. In the music/entertainment industry, getting your voice heard is a good way to not only be recognized but to stand out from the crowd. Nowadays, artists may choose to promote their own music from either selling cd's from the trunks of their cars, walking around the city passing out free singles of their music, or even now inviting friends to an album release party via a Facebook event. A popular way to get music heard without doing all the "legwork" is to submit your music to a music and/or video distribution company. The best companies are those that can even distribute your music internationally; an example is Tunecore.

Tunecore enables artists to establish their music on music retailers such as iTunes, Rhapsody, and Amazonmp3. Artists can keep all rights and ownership, they will still obtain 100% of any royalties recouped and also will have their own artist page of further info pertaining to the band's history. It's exciting to know that Tunecore opens up the window to allow artists to be connected to the world without even stepping foot onto foreign soil.

Another company you may consider would be SongCast, which also allows artists and/or performers to sell their music via many online retailers. These retailers include Spotify, emusic, and the new GooglePlay. Each company has a simple signup process: uploading of media, choosing of the retailers you want to sell your music, and the collection of any royalties earned from music sales. In all of these, you are able to track sells, and even some have the option to see demographically WHERE your music is selling. It's quite impressive how efficient distribution can be.

Publishing records, magazines, album reviews are some examples of publishing. In order to bring your band or company to a well-trusted name, the name has to get out there. I believe a great majority of the time, using distribution companies to assist in promoting your brand will always help. There will always be a connection ready to be made. Capacity Productions is a great promotion company that focuses on promoting virally. I have purchased a package from them and know first-hand that they deliver. What they do is sell a promotion package and guarantee views, comments, subscriptions, etc by promoting your organization/band on every social network they have. They even guarantee thousands of views all within a span of a day! Even millions. Their prices are quite low but they are all REAL views and not computer generated. Thus the fan base grows, and so do your opportunity for new/future royalties.

My 'Music on the Porch 2012' Review

Hello everyone!

Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening! I recently ran across something that seemed quite interesting: Music on the Porch 2012. This is a non-profit event that runs off of donations! Every 2nd and 4th Friday, 'Grass Roots' hosts music events from 6-9pm in an open field in Downtown Raleigh, NC. So, I decided to dissect this series of events a little further. So, I automatically went straight to the Frequently Asked Questions link. The events seem to allow families to enjoy each other and live music in the outdoors. People can bring their own lunches, "picnic-style", or can even purchase food from the Food Truck. The food truck even has several options to choose from depending on one's preferred taste. Beer and Wine is monitored but also allowed. Of course they do make it known and stress restrictions and limitations on drinking alcohol at the park.

Also, I love to eat! So, of course I reviewed what food choices they had to offer on the food truck: pizza by the slice! Klausie's Pizza has received rave reviews, so it makes sense that the concert in the park would provide the option to have food that the greater majority would enjoy. Then, Grass Roots suggested there was also another option to choose from other local favorites before arriving at the venue. The local restaurants include tastes from pretty much all regions: Chinese, Italian, Deli Shops, Pizza and more. Just browsing the list of options was making me hungry.

Reviewing this website/event did motivate me to consider hosting, or becoming a part of, a promotional event similar to this in the future. It gave me ideas to which do not require a lot of money from local supporters to participate. I'm sure the main start-up costs consist of: stage, lighting, sound, security, and tents. But when you think about it, the viewers bring their food, seating, family, and drinks. It seems to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. This also proves to me to be a win-win situation, which is what I learned in a book I'm reading from John C. Maxwell entitled 'Developing the Leader within You'. In that book, he states to consider the "win-win" situation in his Second Level of Leadership. If it is not a winning situation for all, he says don't do it all.

So, hopefully in the future, I will get creative and organize or at least participate in something this fun! Talk with you soon!

Who am I?

So, my name is Evonne Monét Archer and I am an aspiring musical entrepreneur. I intend on establishing my company to be a strong force with an extensive catalogue of songs to shop to potential labels. I currently have been working with producers submitting original lyrics to signed artists, however, I am interested in songwriting for top artists and publishing them as well. I aspire to collaborate with other producers and/or artists on musical projects and eventually start producing music as well.

My background is actually sports, education.....and music! I received my Bachelor's of Science in Business Management from the University of South Florida in 2008. I also ran Division I Track and Field all of my college years. Music has been in my bones since I was about 4 years old. I started playing the piano at 16 yrs old after asking my mom for a keyboard for Christmas. I was inspired to learn, so I taught myself to play. Even to this day, I cannot read music, but take a look at my interpretation of a couple commonly-known worship songs here. I continued singing every Sunday in the Praise Team and upon graduating from college, chose to start performing music on the road with my sister. So, we created Monétique, which is a merge between both of our middle names: Monét and Monique. You can check out some live footage from our first show here!

My hopes for this blog will be to capture my journey, follow my current projects, and stay up-to-date as I release new music from Lady Monarch Productions, Inc. I believe networking can have more power than knowledge and I intend to expand my contacts on a professional level.
