Alzira and her husband were Old Settlers, Cherokees who had removed voluntarily prior to the Trail of Tears.

Many accounts have noted that he was tri-racial – Black, Cherokee, and white – which is true. Ike Rogers, with the help of his third wife, Sarah, and neighbor, Clint Scales, apprehended Cherokee Bill, one of the most ruthless outlaws in the Indian Territory. Cherokee Bill was played by LaKeith Stanfield in the Netflix movie, The Harder They Fall, but the storyline in that film didn’t exactly follow how Bill’s demise actually happened. That involved a gorgeous young family member, a slumber birthday party, a Winchester rifle, and a fire poker.

Ike entertained Cherokee Bill at his house two weeks before Bill’s capture and they were said to be friends. To boot, Ike’s brother in law, Dunk Vann, shot and killed Wash Nave in a case of mistaken identity. Dunk thought Wash was Bill. While Ike and Cannon were unsuccessful in capturing Starr, they wounded one of the members of his gang, Jesse Jackson.

His testimony discussed how Cherokee Freedmen were being treated in the Cherokee Nation following the Treaty of 1866. While, he was able to vote, his children couldn’t go to Cherokee Nation schools. He also discussed racial violence against Freedmen, being unable to take advantage of services, and that Black men who intermarried with Cherokee women were not entitled to the same privileges was white men who did.

He consistently sent letters to the editor arguing for the rights of Cherokee Freedmen. Ike exited the train and was shaking the hands of friends and associates who had gathered for a payment of funds from the Cherokee Nation. Goldsby fired at least five shots, killing Ike instantly. Ike and Goldsby previously got into a dispute at Hayden, and some reports say Ike held a gun to Goldsby’s head or hit him and others that Ike threatened to take Goldsby’s life.
