Hey folks, another late (!) review from dutch musicsite

For The Love Of Music

English:

"Last June, JoosTVD released 'The Hairy Standard', his 22nd album. To be honest, the previous 21 went completely unnoticed here and this also threatened to happen with number 22. Until you start plowing through older emails. And then 'The Hairy Standard' turns out to be a very nice album, certainly too nice to completely ignore. JoosTVD, based in Utrecht, has completed the entire album itself, etc. Please increase the number of Spotify spins below."

Review on german Spinlog Magazine!

Hey, talking about networking on Insta! Met this guy, so welcome Markus from Spinlogmagazine (a new german online magazine supporter of new music).

He gave me a nice, clear spot and review on his website on the "Earcandy" section:

The Dutch multi-instrumentalist blends funk, jazz, and a bit of humor on his latest release.

Utrecht-based musician and producer JoosTVD is back with 'De Nada', a standout track from his 22nd digital album, 'The Very Hairy New Standard'. Built around a deep, infectious bassline, the instrumental blends upbeat funk with clever jazz melodies. Recorded in his home studio using Pro Tools, JoosTVD shapes a rich soundscape of organic drums, keys, and smooth guitars, bypassing traditional vocals entirely in favor of a playful, tongue-in-cheek vocal quirk.

Drawing inspiration from fusion pioneers like Frank Zappa and Gino Vannelli, the track balances a warm, late-night vibe with an energy that is ready for the weekend. It is a sharp reminder of how organic playing and tight arranging can keep a listener hooked from start to finish without needing a single lyric.

Music World Review!

Wow! Very grateful to Fred Pach for those wonderful words.

English:

With The Very Hairy New Standard, JoosTVD delivers another album (already in his 22nd year) that exists entirely in its own universe: a world in which pop, funk, playful experiments and tongue-in-cheek humor constantly intersect. It is a record that, with its compact playing time of more than 33 minutes, does not bore for a second and in which JoosTVD once again proves that he remains one of the most idiosyncratic and productive musicians in the Netherlands. The songs are short, pointed and full of small musical discoveries that you only fully notice after several listens.

The opener De Nada immediately sets the tone: light-footed, rhythmic and with that typical JoosTVD twist that hangs somewhere between pop and funk. The One Not the Only and Laid-Back build on that with a relaxed groove and melodies that settle in your head surprisingly quickly. JoosTVD likes compact songs, and you can hear that: no unnecessary frills, but just enough arrangement to give each song character. Bread Crums for the Hermit and Loving Place show how he manages to create a completely unique atmosphere with minimal means. Halfway through the album, he dives deeper into his own musical fantasy world with The Sky Mountain Way and The Very Hairy Old Standard. Especially the latter song stands out because of its longer playing time and more drawn-out structure, as if JoosTVD takes a moment to unfold his ideas further. It's one of the moments when you hear how musically skilled he is, without it ever becoming pretentious. Viva las Visa and Fiddle a Little then bring back lightness and tempo, with playful rhythms and a wink that you immediately pick up as a listener. In the final phase of the album we find Après la Lettre, Into the Sunlight and The Sundance Kid, three short but atmospheric tracks that round off the whole with a feeling of lightness and freedom. They are songs that feel almost cinematic, as if they accompany small scenes in a quirky indie film. JoosTVD stays true to his style: melodic, funky, sometimes absurdist, but always musically thoughtful.
The Very Hairy New Standard is again a typical JoosTVD album: stubborn, creative, playful and surprisingly coherent despite the many styles and ideas that pass by. It is music that does not try to meet trends, but rather stems from pure artistic freedom. For fans of his earlier work, this is a feast of recognition; For new listeners, this is an excellent introduction to an artist who has been following his own path for years. JoosTVD proves once again that originality and pleasure in making music can still go hand in hand.

Review: Fred Pach (Music World)

Dutch:

Halverwege het album duikt hij met The Sky Mountain Way en The Very Hairy Old Standard dieper zijn eigen muzikale fantasiewereld in.

That Very Hairy New Video!

2026-05-15T10:07:04.628+02:00

A.I. is everything these days. It will be a question of time when we're all depending on it I guess. Is this bad? Every invention has its positive sides and in my case I try to keep up with the "modern standards", new tools to stay creative, to create something mostly funny. I've always done that. And it sure was fun to do.

There are a lot of A.I.editors online where you can create a whole little movie from a simple picture. I've kept it low budget of course, that's the DIY principle! I had a lot of pictures already for the albumcovers, so I uploaded 2 of them, a start frame and an end frame. Then you come up with a story. This was my tiny fantasy: a man running scared, tries to escape a black planet with a balloon, but fails most of the time:

Go for example to Image to video to create one.

Subsequently, I had something like 15 little SD movies with a 5 to 10 seconds length frame. I loaded them in Veed, an online video editor and tried them out on this new funky song: De Nada

There's not a lot of singing on this song, only a few familiar Spanish shout-outs like: Gracias! De Nada and Adios! So it's a mostly instrumental funny funky groove with only the pretence than to get up and dance say gracias!

Enjoy!

The Very Hairy New Standard Picture

2026-05-09T11:56:00.004+02:00

The Very Hairy New Standard

That's the title of the new album. Guess you can figure out the "very hairy new" part.

The covers:

It started with some colourful pictures, made on the day of my son's wedding! Official. A gentleman in black. Well, I came up with the idea of changing the background and after a few experiments I found this picture that grabbed my eyes and imagination. Yes, that's it! A sort of black sun with black hairy rays shining back at me. Or a black planet I'd like to escape from. Sign of the times?

The concept:

I developed this concept further into a new video I'll share with you... later.

The title came up when I, and I guess the whole (98%) wide world, now come to realize that there's a whole new (or is it still the old?), pushy standard happening, trying to change the way we have to treat each other now. I think it's a very hairy one. Is it part of a plan? Who cares?

The whole simple, humane thinking about each other took a very ugly turn in my view the last 5 years. Me and you. Them and us. Mistrust. Anger. Extreme greed. Power. Money. Monopoly. Nationalism. War. Fear.

Me, me, me. Look at me. O, O, I am so emo... Alone on a black planet. Escape. Balloon.

Unbelievable. This is 2026, not the paranoia 1950s! Or is it?

The music:

Tongue-in-cheek. Fun. Yes, very serious.

By Marino Serdons (T U!)

english:

Funky Joost strikes again. Joost has been professionally fun in the ear for years. His 21st album Collapse again excels with humorous creativity. A DIY who crafts in his own studio with passion like Einzelganger. Inspiration for the artwork and title of the album apparently came from a long walkway, which might collapse. Similarly with life and all concerns. The new album houses twelve songs where cheerfulness and zest for life splash, isn't it? Musically at all; With pleasant keywork and cinematic synths. Yet fear and anger turn out to be hidden in his lyrics. It is not for nothing that he is sometimes called The Vanished Dutchman. Self -reflection and/or self -preservation? Feel the Songs Theatral Funky, with the sinking 'sub Submarine' he accentuates that again in a playful way. And the instrumental title track also suggests that the bridge will ever collapse and brings us to another universe. Were earlier compositions perhaps slightly more complex and richer, the current songs feel short and powerful. Collapse is a concept album with a clear thread in the story in terms of content. Yet each song looks nice on its own. Joost is a maverick in the contemporary musical landscape and that adorns him.

With his new album "Collapse" JoosTVD wrote, played and produced an album that begs to become a concept album. Rise and shine Joost!

dutch:

Funky Joost slaat weer toe.

With his new album "Collapse" JoosTVD wrote, played and produced an album that begs to become a concept album. Rise and shine Joost!
