Okay, I was surfing the web to find cool products to bring to my REEL FisherGirl Readers and I came across a really cool site! The company name is Oceangirl and they have handcrafted in the good ole USA tournament quality fishing rods just for women! They have custom Rods for Novice up to extreme anglers. Now is that cool or what-REEL Fishergirls! They have a list of dealers that carry their products around the United States. A Night Of Fishing

A catfish pole bouncing lightly with the current in the dim light of a lantern. The night air filled with sounds of subterranean creatures twittering softly. Glancing over, a bobber drifts slowly atop the shadowy water. The sound of the moving current stream- supply a sense of sagacity. A glimmer of the moon sparkles one small area of water with color. Still, yet not silent. Reverberations of night sounds spill into darkness. Excitement, short lived, turns just to be a nibble. A splash in the distance grasps all the attention. Suddenly, a notion- somethings missing, the twist is - I was only wishing-I was night fishing.

Fishing is a passion for me and many times even when I am not out fishing, I am thinking about fishing. I like night fishing, I can have a catfish pole cast out as far as I can get it. On the other side a crappie pole with a bobber and if the lantern is not quite bright enough, a crappie light too. I remember the days of my sister and I fishing off the docks, our husbands would be calling us asking "when are you coming home?" Once we got out there it was hard to stop- bites or no bites, it is just relaxing and good "me" time. I wish I still lived that close to my sister, I miss those nights! Not only was the fishing relaxing but we would always have some good laughs, thinking we had seen a flying saucer or something!
I usually use worms on my catfish pole and minnows on my crappie pole but I have used many different baits from live crickets to hot dogs. Sometimes I take the kids to the reservoir and they swim and I FISH! Fishing is really a great way for family to spend time together. If you check out my about page, there is a newspaper article of my family-four generations all fishing on one dock. We have fun, laugh and talk about everyday life when we go fishing. Catching a fish or not on a night of fishing really isn't important it is who you choose to take fishing that does! Miss You Sister!

Rocky Mountains-Moose-Dangerous?

If your planning on visiting the Rocky Mountains on vacation or-better yet, that fervently awaited fishing trip, (Lake Granby, Colorado would be a good recommendation) keep the moose in mind. In fact, Moose attack more people than wolves and bears combined. That's right, put that image of Rocky and Bullwinkle to the side. For many of us, our psyche of a moose is misconstrued. We envision the moose with clumsiness, being leisurely and dawdling. In reality, when a moose is startled it can prove aggression. Moreover, the moose will sometimes attack if a dog is present. This in part, due to the wolf being its only main predator. During rutting (mating) season, a bull moose tends to be more aggressive. Cow moose with young calves are progressively more hostile. They are protective of their young and can charge and stomp. Moose are quicker than most realize. No matter your plans, fishing, vacation, hiking, photography, wildlife or hunting-when in Moose territory be aware and respect this great deer species.

Flashlights and Night Crawlers

I grew up in Marseilles, Illinois about an hour or so outside of Chicago. I don't ever remember complaining of being "bored" as many kids do today. My friends and I would walk down the street across a very memorable foot bridge down the embankment of the I&M canal, built in the 1920's, that led to the old lock and dam. We would use sticks and strings and attach a small piece of hot dog or night crawler to the string. Most of the time our catches only consisted of a crawdad clinging tightly with tiny little claws to our bait. After a good Midwest rain, we would gather together in the dark with flashlights in hand. The yard would be illuminating with tiny circles, searching for a little wiggle under the grass. The learning curve for mastering catching such an elusive wiggling creature was fun. The tiny burrowing invertebrate doesn't even have eyes, however the night crawler uses photo receptors to detect light. Once these photo receptors caught our light, this intangible mortal crawler would squirm quickly back into the earth. You had to be quick on the draw to catch one. Our quest to seize these earthworms usually would only tot up to about a half dozen. We would usually end our evening with a little flashlight tag. In the end, our night adventure of flashlights and night crawlers would keep us busy for a few more days helping to evade the newly found passage "I'm bored".

My First Trout!

Over the weekend, I caught my first trout! If you love to fish, as I do, then you know how excited you get just catching a fish. But when you catch one that you have never caught before-then the excitement is even greater~! I was fishing with a worm, off the bottom. My husband and I talked about how we had both never had the privilege of catching a trout, somehow they had eluded us for sometime. However, I can now add trout to my list of catches! I gave my trout away to a gentlemen fishing next to me. He then stated to my husband how he wished his wife liked the outdoors as I do. Ladies, maybe you need to add fishing and outdoor activities to your list - your hubbies will LOVE you for it! I also noticed over the weekend that my girls are getting really good at casting, although my catch was the only catch of the day, we all had fun!

Keep Your Kids Safe Around Water!

No matter if you are out having a day on the beach or doing my favorite -FISHING- remember to always be safe around water. According to the International Life Saving Federation- scientific evidence reveals that more than two persons per minute die due to drowning. From that more than 50 percent are children. 1.2 million people around the world die by drowning every year. Just because a person can swim does not mean that they will not drown. Strong currents, large waves, becoming disoriented, cramps, these are just a few of the unforeseen events that can occur once someone falls into the water. I suggest no matter your swimming ability, if you are on a boat or near deep water put a Life Jacket on. Like a seat belt, Life Jackets can save lives. Make wearing a Life Jacket a regular routine. Nowadays, we put our seat belts on as soon as we get in a vehicle, use the same routine with Life Jackets. There are three age groups that possess higher risk factors for drowning, they are:

0 to 5 years old
20 to 25 years old
over 60 years old

The majority of drownings occur in circumstances where the victim has no intention of going into the water and where lifeguards are not present.

In summary, please be safe around water, if children are fishing, swimming or doing any type of activity around water without lifeguards present -please put them in a Life Jacket. Remember also just because you are a "good" swimmer does not mean you will not drown.

Take A Kid Fishing For The Fourth of July Weekend

This Fourth of July provides great opportunities to take a kid fishing. When you head out the door to set up to see the big fireworks show, don't forget to throw a few poles in the trunk! You probably sit around waiting for the fireworks show for hours in order to get a good view. Take this opportunity to take a kid fishing. Many shows are right over the water! Kids love to fish and providing them with a few hours is plenty. What a better way to keep them busy, as you wait. Make sure you take plenty of water, and bait! Wear hats and sunscreen. Remember- inbetween catching fish- explain Independance Day to them and what it means to you and your family. If your wondering on a great destination for this 4th of July, I recommend Truman Lake in Missouri- Great fishing and plenty to do! Grand Lake, Colorado is another great choice! Both areas provide fireworks right over the water! I do suggest getting there early. Also, check with your State and National Parks. As a final point- no matter what your plans for this holiday, creating good lasting memories is the most important!

Opening Day for fishing in Minnesota has turned out big for a 2 year old girl. Fishing off a pontoon boat with her family at Round Lake. The fishergirl tot hooked a 30 inch muskie with a small kiddie pole. The toddler and her catch would find its way into the record books for 2010. When the worlds youngest reel fishergirl got her first glimpse of the record keeper she said "I caught a shark"! Now, you can't get any cuter response from a World Record Holder. Pig Roast-Memories Of A FisherGirl

I can still vision myself in the rain....turning, turning, turning. Roasting seemed to last an eternity. The rain not allowing us to rest. In between, checking on my fishing pole. Propped up perfectly on a Y shaped stick, stuck 3 inches into the wet ground. The Y in the stick along with the most perfect curve toward the water, gave me the best angle to lie my pole down sideways. Just right I thought. Walking away, I caught myself dreaming of a big enough bite that would break my stick and carry away my fishing pole. Back to the roasting I wander, listening to the adults squabble over whose next to turn the mouth open, eyes wide, wet bodied, roasting pig. The campfire flickered as droplets of rain fall into the small flames. By now it was dusk. The smoldering fire gave me just enough light, allowing me to find my way to my fishing pole. The water rose to about 3 feet down from the bank. Current running slight swift. Reeling and tugging, my line seemed to be caught up in some rocks. The line finally loosened up a little, as it reached the dark lower part of the embankment. Reeling the line in closer, I still felt some tension. As the line came closer into the campfires dim light, I realized.... I HAD A FISH! I reeled it in, letting it hang from the end of my pole. I strolled back over to our roasting. The adults, now cuddled up under a brown tarp, sitting around the roast. "Nice Catch" they alleged. I immediately grinned. Although the rain was a deterrent, we eventually got our pig roasted. Most Impotantly, I came out with a memory imprinted forever! (It's the little things in life that we remember!)

I could sit for hours with a pole off the dock, using minnows as bait, catching Crappie and Blue Gills! Crappie is my favorite fish to cook up for a fish fry! I havent found anyone that can cook it any better than my Dad, Lee! YUM! Your location probably has a lot to do with it too. Different parts of the country contain different types of fish. Family is a definite influence. A few years back, we as a family, were featured in the newspaper because we had several generations on one dock-all of us fishing! In loving memory of Grandma Stechman who LOVED to fish! There was a time when she would want to be there all day! Just as I do! Funny how we follow in the footsteps of the people we love and respect so much! We miss you Grandma! I like to catfish too but for me anyway, takes a little more patience! The thought of dipping your hands into stink bait, baiting that fishing pole, catching a slimy fish, then cutting it to pieces probably sounds repulsive for many girls and females! But for me, it is just another fun day! I lived on the Gulf Coast for many years and went fishing only a few times, I only wish I had went out on one of those rental fishing boats and caught something big! How Fun! Maybe I will someday be able to visit all my family in Florida and they can show me what fun a big catch really is! Well I had fun today just talking about fishing. Fly Fishing

I lived in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains for over three years. I do regret the fact that I never had a chance to learn to Fly Fish. It does look like it would be a lifetime sport and I think that those that do know how to Fly Fish, love it. I do recommend this -Joan Wulff's Fly Fishing: Expert Advice from a Woman's Perspective! For those of you who would like to learn to Fly Fish, or those of you who know and just want some tips and tricks. I grew up on the Fox River, where I became a fishergirl- watching my Grandfather- in his lucky fishing chair, with Grandma not far, taxing her brimmed hat to keep the sun from her face. Grandma and I focused in on Grandpa- defying gravity with his long curved ashes, that seemed at that time, to be at least a mile long. The dark brown Moore cigarette loosely in his grip, the fishing pole nestled in front of him, careful to leave a hand free- just in case.
Those years are etched in my mind forever. I find that today it is ever more challenging to create such moments. We have evolved into a faster society in which we can text, blog, call someone no matter where we are at that moment. Convienence, but at a cost. Our children are suffering. I challenge not only myself but all of you to take the time to step outdoors-go fishing- it don't cost much- but it will last a lifetime!
