Cabo San Lucas – Dan & MacKensie’s Real Destination Wedding

Dan & MacKensie of Grapevine, Texas decided to head south for their destination wedding in Cabo San Lucas. What a perfect setting for their wedding day! Thank you to Chavvon & Larissa, Dallas wedding photographers for sharing the beautiful photography with us!

MacKensie shared with us some of the details about their special wedding:

How did you meet?
Our mutual friend introduced us at a boxing party that Danny was throwing. With constant group gatherings, we became closer friends over the summer.

Tell us about the proposal!
Technically, Danny still has not asked! However, he did take me to New York City on New Year’s Eve. Together we picked out a ring in the Diamond District and then celebrated New Year’s in Times Square.

Why a destination wedding?
Both of us love to travel and we thought it would be fun to have our friends and family along with us!

How did you know your destination would be the perfect place to hold your wedding?
We traveled to Hilton Los Cabos the year before and absolutely fell in love with the resort. It became a special place to us, so when we decided to have a destination wedding, it was the obvious choice.

What was the most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Danny enjoyed deep sea fishing that morning, but claims his real catch was later that day! I enjoyed the “getting ready” ritual with my daughter and then the casual ceremony with our closest friends and family.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding day?
A blue sky, the sound of waves, a sandy beach under our feet, and saying our vows.

Did you honeymoon at your wedding destination, or go somewhere special afterwards?
Vegas, baby!

What was your favorite detail from your wedding day?
We enjoyed every minute with our friends and family in Cabo San Lucas. We were also thrilled that our friends, Chavvon and Larissa were able to capture all of our special moments. Now we can look at our beautiful photos and remember our wonderful day forever!

Natural Bridge, Virginia Destination Wedding – Kathy & Matt

Leo Druker sent us today’s real destination wedding – Kathy & Matt’s wedding at Natural Bridge, Virginia. What a gorgeous location and a perfect setting for this couple! Now I want to visit Virginia and see this place in person!

Here are all the details from Kathy!

How did you & Matt first meet?
They always tell you not to meet people in a bar but thats exactly where Matt and I met – at the Firkin and Bulldog. I went with my siblings and friends to eat dinner and hang out for the night. Matt had just flown into town a few days prior. He and some work friends were staying in the hotel across the street and had come over for a drink. At some point during the night they started talking to my brother and eventually I jumped in and introduced myself. I thought he was cute. We ended up exchanging numbers and the rest is history. We also found out later in the relationship that we met on my parent’s anniversary, which is eerie because I compare Matt and myself to my mother and father all the time. Soulmates.

Tell us about the proposal!
I met Matt while he was in Virginia on work travel. He actually lived in California and would get monthly “home visits.” After a particularly difficult visit home Matt finally arrived back in Virginia early one morning. I had put off going into work so I could see him for a short while. As he drove up I ended up running down the street in my robe and up to his parked car to surprise him. He looked kind of stunned and hopped out of the car and gave me an awkward hug. As he slowly pushed me away he presented me with a ring we had previously purchased as an example for the engagement ring he had recently put a down payment on. He went down to one knee. “Katherine Angel, you are my soulmate and the love of my life, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I cant wait for the other damn ring. Will you marry me?” and I said “Of course!” When he got the real engagement ring he proposed again at a local park late at night. He set up a camera to take a photo every 10 seconds to capture my reaction and took me completely by surprise. He’s so very sweet.

What made you choose to have a destination wedding?
Matt and I are constantly taking road trips. We love adventure and exploring. We’ve actually visited most of the major caverns in Virginia and we know I-81 like the back of our hands. We knew we wanted to take people out of the norm and bring them into little our world. We wanted an outdoor wedding and we knew we wanted it somewhere amazing. We also really liked the idea of having the ceremony and the reception done together at a hotel, that way our friends could stay and experience more of the beauty in the area and the 3 hour drive to get there wouldn’t seem so bad!

How did you know your destination would be the perfect place to hold your wedding?
This is the first stop of our very first road trip together and is the place where we first felt solidified as a couple. The place where we first knew what we had was something BIG and that we’d be together forever. It could not have been more perfect for our wedding, such a great mix of nature and beauty.

What was the most memorable moment about your wedding day?
The cake cutting. When we gathered at the table it was just really amazing to stand there on one side and look across to see every one of your friends and family crowded around. The lighting was just right and it backlit them perfectly. I realized in that moment that they had all driven this long distance and dedicated an entire weekend to celebrating with Matt and I. That we mattered that much to all these people. We were both so very thankful. It was just very humbling moment of the wedding and it stands out to me.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding day?
That all the groomsmen had beards. I am a total beard chaser so Matt had the groomsmen, my father and several friends all grow beards for my wedding. I was happy! The Converse shoes were also a favorite detail of ours. They really tied the bridal party together.

What was the best part of having a destination wedding?
It’s like a big retreat for all your family and friends. We were running into people all day the day of the wedding as we set up and they were checking in. It allowed everyone to relax and really focus on having a good time because everyone stayed at the hotel and no one had to drive home. It also allowed for us to have a lunch the next day to sit and talk to any guests who stayed behind and wanted to eat with us. I just liked everyone not being in a rush to come or go, we all just relaxed and hung out.

Did you honeymoon at your wedding destination, or go somewhere special afterwards?
We stopped in at Harrisonburg the night after the wedding for a romantic get-a-way but went home that weekend. We actually celebrated our honeymoon the weekend after the wedding by flying out to California and spending some time in the sun at the beach!

Anything else you would like to share about your wedding?
My mother and sister made everything happen. I would have been a mess without them. My family really pulled together and about 70% of what was made/seen at the wedding we did ourselves. I wanted a natural, laid back, breathtaking, daisy covered, DIY (do it yourself) wedding and that is exactly what I got. I could not be happier.

Winter Destination Wedding in a Historic New England Barn – Lea & Mark

Destination wedding photographer Heather Parker shared Lea & Mark’s wedding with us. Lea & Mark live in Chicago, and decided to head back to the area of Lea’s hometown for their wedding. The ceremony took place at 2nd Congregational Church, with the reception in the historic barn at The Red Lion Inn in Cohasset, Massachusetts.

Lea was so kind to take the time to share some of their story with us! Enjoy!

How did the two of you meet?
Mark and I were introduced through mutual friends. Mark works in downtown Chicago in the treasury department of a major consulting firm. I teach English at high school in the Chicago suburbs. One of his coworkers, Kyle, is married to one of mine, Michelle. They thought we’d be a good match, which resulted in a first date at a Chicago restaurant. The rest is history!

Tell us about the proposal!
Mark and I both lived in Chicago at the time of the proposal. I left my apartment for work in the suburbs, and, when I got there, I had a (pretty miserable sounding) email from Mark telling me he was feeling under the weather. Being sick and staying home from work is pretty unusual for him, so I offered to bring chicken noodle soup over to his place after I finished coaching that afternoon. After school, I drove quickly back to my apartment to change clothes and let my dog out. When I got there, I found the back door open and delicious smells wafting out. Mark had stayed home to receive my ring, which was being delivered by FedEx. He wasn’t sick at all, made a fantastic dinner, and proposed over my favorite dessert—carrot cake.

What made you choose to have a destination wedding?
Though I’ve lived in Chicago for several years, coastal Massachusetts is where I’m from. While it was a destination for the majority of our guests, it’s home to me. Initially we considered having the wedding in Chicago (where we both live) or Colorado (where Mark lived and skied for a couple of years following college), but ultimately, there really is “no place like home.”

How did you know your destination would be the perfect place to hold your wedding?
Tough question! The Massachusetts seashore isn’t most people’s idea of a perfect destination in January (when our wedding was celebrated). We liked Cohasset because it’s close to my hometown, close to Boston, and has that fantastic, New England small town charm. The inn where we had our reception is historic and filled with character; it really serves as the hub of the town—situated in the center of the village proper. Across the street is a quaint, delicious French bakery, and the harbor is just half a mile down the hill. The barn structure at the Red Lion Inn (where we held our reception) captured the rustic, traditional style we were going for. Since it is so architecturally interesting, it required very little decoration.

What was the most memorable moment about your wedding day?
There are so many wonderful memories! It was incredible to see how many people were there who loved us. The smiles on the faces of our parents and loved ones and the enjoyment they took in our day was very special. Also, it’s not often that January 16th in coastal New England dawns bright and sunny! We were blessed with weather in the fifties and bluebird skies all day! I also really enjoyed the carrot cake!

What was your favorite detail from your wedding day?
There were several special details. I was fortunate to be able to wear a double strand of pearls that had belonged to Mark’s grandmother, who had passed away the year before our wedding. Also, because we both had grandparents who couldn’t be with us to share the day, I put together a “memory table” with each of their wedding pictures and candles commemorating the role each one played in our lives. Mark’s pastor from Omaha flew in to celebrate our wedding. As a result, the homily was beautifully personal and heartfelt. Pastor Zehnder has known Mark and his family for years, and, because we’d met together in the months leading up to the wedding, I felt he really knew me as well. The entire reception was done in navy and white—just a little bit nautical—which suited our location and our taste perfectly.

What was the best part of having a destination wedding?
Being “captive” in a particular location with your closest family and friends really lends itself to a fantastic, ongoing party. On the Thursday night before our wedding, our entire wedding party gathered in Boston for a Celtics/Bulls game. The next morning, we all migrated down the coast together and spent the next two days enjoying each other’s company in Cohasset. Living at a fifteen room inn with those who are closest to you is a bit like picking your own neighbors in a college dorm. The sense of togetherness was fantastic. Because everyone feels like they’re away from home and on a vacation, they’re especially inclined to kick back, relax, and enjoy!

Did you honeymoon at your wedding destination, or go somewhere special afterwards?
Because I’m a teacher, taking a real honeymoon in January wasn’t a possibility. The night after the wedding, Mark and I spent the night at the new W Hotel Boston, then flew back to Chicago. The service at the W was top notch, by the way! We’re actually leaving on our delayed honeymoon this month—a week in the Riviera Maya (Mexico) at El Dorado Seaside Suites.

Real Destination Wedding – Jessica & Christiaan at Rockhouse in Negril, Jamaica

Looking through these images, I just want to pack my bags and head south to Jamaica! Jessica & Christiaan are from New York City, and had a destination wedding at Rockhouse in Negril, Jamaica was shared with us by the amazing Steve Koo out of Chicago, Illinois. The photographs are gorgeous and capture not only the beauty of the couple, but of the surroundings as well!

From Steve’s email to me: Jessica and Christiaan have some amazing friends and family – while most destination weddings are relatively small, 86 people made their way down from all over the US to attend their wedding. They had a beautiful ceremony and reception set against the cliffs of Negril on the edge of the island. They wanted their wedding to feel fresh, clean, and fun, and I think they did a fantastic job pulling it off!

Jessica shared with us the story of her & Christiaan’s love, their wedding, and more!

When we first met: We met Junior year of college at Indiana University. We knew each other’s friends but didn’t know each other. We were finally introduced at my best friend’s 21st birthday party and 8 years later she was actually the one who officiated the ceremony!

The Proposal: He actually proposed at the Rockhouse back in Oct 2008- It was our first night there and we just finished dinner. He suggested we go on a walk so we could check out the rest of the property and while standing out on one of the cliffs overlooking the ocean he got down on one knee and proposed. After we had our little moment, he tried to rush me back to the room so we could call our friends and family… there was only one problem – I couldnt move because I was frozen in shock!

Why have a destination wedding? We fell in love with the Rockhouse while we were there the first time. Ironically there was a wedding going on while we were there, so we got to see all the behind the scenes action! When we got back to the states and started looking at different venues, we just couldnt get the Rockhouse out of our heads. We realized that no matter where we looked it would always be compared to the Rockhouse- so we decided just to do it!

Why did you choose your destination? The Rockhouse is such a meaningful place to us and we just thought it
would be so wonderful to share this special place with our closest friends and family.

The most memorable moment of the wedding day: Probably the moment when everyone was lined up to walk down the aisle. The music started playing and we both looked at each other and realized this was actually happening!

Your favorite detail of your wedding day? The beautiful natural backdrop of the sky, cliffs, and ocean- it just looked like a scene out of a movie!

The best part of having a destination wedding: Most weddings last 5-6 hours and its over. This was a weekend (or even a week for some) long event. Being that our families and friends are scattered across the country it was so wonderful to see everyone bonding and having fun together. When else in your life do you get to go on vacation with all your friends and family?!!?

The honeymoon afterwards: We “mini-mooned” at a hotel called Moon Dance Cliffs for a few nights to get away from it all before heading back to NYC. We are planning a small Honeymoon in December to have that true “honeymoon experience”

DIY Pom Poms for Destination Wedding Reception Decorations!

When I spotted these DIY Pom Poms yesterday at Justin & Mary Marantz’s blog, I knew they were too adorable not to share! Transporting decorations to a destination wedding for the reception isn’t always easy – but tissue paper is easy to pack, and you can always bring along scissors in your checked baggage! I’d do a few practice ones at home first as you perfect the craft, and you might want make them before having drinks poolside at your destination!

I asked Mary right away if I could share these with you, and she said yes! Super easy, super cute – can’t you just picture these floating above a wedding reception in the breeze? So adorable! Tissue paper is available in so many colors, the options are endless!

Here are Julia’s instructions (Julia is their amazing & awesome assistant, and has been sharing crafty goodness all week!):

We started with 8 pieces of tissue paper, string (you can also use monofilament), floral wire, and scissors. It all looks pretty harmless sitting there doesn’t it? The bright and cheery green has me thinking I might be able to do this after all!

We folded the tissue paper accordion style (each fold was about 1-2 inches wide). Then wrapped the middle with floral wire (about 20 inches long-). This is where I started to get scared. How do I get that derivative of a grade school fan to turn into a full, round, pom pom?!?

We trimmed the edges with the rotary trimmer just to make sure they were even. Then cut the edges so they were rounded on each end.

This is what it looked like right before I went into full on panic mode.

Next we pulled each layer out toward the center. We flipped it over and did the same thing on the other side.

Keep going! Word of warning, spread the tissue paper carefully! I may have ripped an edge or two while poofing it out!

Voila! A pom pom!! Not too shabby huh?!?

There will be lots of eye-candy, and Julia shared her DIY tips on how to make flag garlands, flags for guests to wave, fresh squeezed Old Fashioned Lemonade, and Mint Juleps. Ok, those last two probably wouldn’t travel very well to your destination wedding, but you could always sip on them while making the other goodies! There is one more DIY craft to come tomorrow as well on their blog – I can’t wait!

Lea & Brian’s Costa Rica Destination Wedding

When Courtney Jade submitted this Costa Rica destination wedding to us to review, I couldn’t help but swoon a little bit. A gorgeous couple, a beautiful day, and so much love! Lea & Brian were married at Tamarindo Diria Hotel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Lea was kind enough to share lots of details about her & Brian, along with their wedding day!

Lea & Brian’s Love Story
In the Beginning: We met at the restaurant we worked at. He was a server and I was a bartender. At the time I was seeing someone else. I didn’t know at the time, but he asked one of our co-workers if I was available and she said no. About 2 months later I was and he asked me out.

The Proposal: We went to his stepbrother’s destination wedding in Maui. The day after the wedding he was unusually adimant about going for a walk on the beach. It was late and we didn’t find one that wasn’t really rocky, and I really didn’t feel like twisting my ankle in the dark. So the next day we found a wonderful sandy beach that we strolled along. I stopped to take out the camera to take pictures of the sunset and the boats. He stood behind me and told me how much he loved me. I turned around and he got down on one knee and proposed. I was completely surprised! I of course said yes and people started clapping. (I had no idea people were watching)

Planning the Wedding: We had been to Costa Rica twice before and loved it. We both knew we wanted a beach wedding so after doing some research it was definitely where we were going and we planned a Costa Rica destination wedding. Not only do we love it there, but it would have been much more expensive to get married here, and you never know when it’s going to rain at our beaches.

Best Part of the Wedding Day: Walking up the aisle and seeing each other for the first time. I had to look down a couple times so I would start sobbing!

Favorite Detail: The gorgeous and natural scenery all around us in Costa Rica. Very little decoration was needed.

The Best Part of Having a Costa Rica Destination Wedding: It’s pretty difficult not to have an amazing time. It’s like a big vacation with all your closest friends and family. Also, it is so much less stressful when you don’t have to plan every last detail yourself, you just have to have faith in the person coordinating it from far away.

We really wanted everyone to have a wonderful and memorable time in Costa Rica. We think we accomplished that mission. Some of our friends who used to never travel out of the country are now hooked and are already planning their next trips.

Honeymoon Plans: We did not take a honeymoon elsewhere right after the wedding. We do however plan on taking one in about a year when we save up money. We are considering South America, Australia, or maybe Ireland since we got married on St. Patricks Day.

Adrian & Dino’s Wedding in Vancouver BC, Canada

When we put the call out for beautiful, colorful wedding shoes, we had NO idea how many incredible shoes would end up in our inbox. Even more amazing? Entire weddings planned around the colors found in the shoes! Just fabulous!

Amber Hughes, a wedding photographer in Vancouver, Canada sent in photos from Adrian & Dino’s Wedding, and we just couldn’t stop raving over them! How incredible are those blue Manolo Blahniks?

But even more stunning is seeing that blue repeated throughout all the details of their wedding day!

Adrian’s dress was custom made for her by Jill McKinnon, a dress maker of 25+ years, who lives on Westham Island in East Ladner. Adrian had fallen in love with a high end designer dress that was out of her budget, so she worked with Jill to create something similar but with her own unique twist. Having an experienced dress maker create your dress allows for the little details that make a dress special to be incorporated – her dress even included pockets, perfect for tissues!

All the bridesmaid dresses were custom made to each girl’s taste. What the couple did is purchase a huge bolt of fabric in the material they wanted and then sent each girl on their way to have a custom cocktail length dress made. The girls are from all over, so Adrian didn’t even see all of the dresses until the day before the wedding. I love how each dress so beautifully represents each girl, yet they all compliment each other so well!

They both got ready at their parent’s homes before the wedding.

The flowers were done by Michelle at Petals and Papery. She also handled the decor and wedding planning.

Their wedding ceremony was held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Vancouver BC, and their reception was held at The Law Courts Inn, Vancouver BC.

Their wedding cake was made by Jill from The Uncommon Cake. Jill even made the cake dairy free for Adrian & Dino!

At the end of the night, Adrian and Dino did an amazing surprise salsa dance for their first trip around the dance floor as man and wife! Their DJ was John Mazzei. His father, Vick Mazzei, is a well known DJ in the local Italian community. When Vick was busy that night, John stepped in to help them out.

Aren’t these shoes stunning? Who says brides need to wear white shoes on their wedding day? Have fun with it! Photographer Hilary Mercer from Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina sent in this photograph of these lovely shoes. The bride will be wearing them on her wedding day in October, and they have planned their whole color scheme based on the blue in these shoes!
