Downtime - Oct 4, 2017

Hi All,

Apologies for the intermittent downtime over the past hour or so. One of the datacenters we work with experienced a full power failure taking our servers and upstream equipment with it.

We pride ourselves on having near perfect uptime so this is a real blow. We take care to only work with providers that can provide redundancy for every possible system and will be working with our vendors to see why the UPS systems didn't kick in as expected.

Thanks for bearing with us.

Redirect Issue Resolved

There has been a problem with one of our partners that has, regrettably, resulted in links on publisher sites being rewritten and redirected. We have disabled the affected code until this is fully resolved. All whos.amung.us features work as intended and without issue, the only thing missing is the what's being copied stats, once the issue is resolved these will be back.

whos.amung.us has worked with Tynt since 2009 to bring you stats about the top phrases and images that were being copied off of your site, they provide a great service and we were able to work with them to provide a small subset of what they provide to whos.amung.us users.

Recently, we got some publisher complaints that links on their sites were being redirected through the domain vlr.tynt.com. This immediately raised red flags as our widgets are specifically tailored to ensure the publishers site is never modified in any way. Once we determined that the affected code was coming from the Tynt copy and paste stats JavaScript code we immediately disabled the code in all widgets, and it remains that way as of this posting. We will re-enable the copy and paste stats as soon as we have resolved the issue with our partner.

If you see any redirects, empty your browser cache and reload the page, browser cached versions of the widget code may still load the affected code. Also, if you've copied the whos.amung.us widget Javascript code to your own server, please point it back to the original location (ie. http://whos.amung.us/classic.js, http://whos.amung.us/small.js, http://whos.amung.us/colored.js, http://whos.amung.us/tab.js, or http://whos.amung.us/map.js) so that you ensure you are not loading an old version of the widget code.

Please contact us if you are experiencing any problems.

Once again, apologies to all of our affected publishers, we are here to help and absolutely want to make sure our widgets provide the best service possible and that includes never manipulating your page content.

Wordpress.com Issues Resolved

TL:DR; Wordpress.com hosted sites (does not affect .org/self hosted sites) widgets were broken, now they are fixed.

A few days ago it was brought to our attention that widgets on Wordpress.com hosted sites were no longer functioning and displaying an incorrect concurrent user count.(if you run your own install of WP on your own server this wouldn't have affected you).

What happened was that, in the latest update to the Wordpress.com platform, the Photon functionality was turned on by default. Photon retrieves images embedded in your blog once and then hosts them off of Wordpress' servers to speed up blog serving time by reducing the number of locations your browser has to look for image assets. While this is a great feature in most cases it causes a problem for services like whos.amung.us where we rely on the blog users loading the widget image from our servers so that they can be counted in the stats. With Photon proxying our widget images no one was getting counted in the stats for sites hosted on Wordpress.com as the end users never requested the widget images from us directly.

We've been working with Automattic (the fantastic company behind Wordpress) over the past few days to find a solution that allows whos.amung.us widgets to continue functioning on Wordpress.com hosted blogs, and I'm happy to report that there is a solution now in place that allows the whos.amung.us widget to work properly once again!

You shouldn't need to make any changes to your widget code, but if you are seeing a lot of "Unknown" users in the readers list on your whos.amung.us stat pages you might want make a very small change to your widget code to serve the widget off of https and not http.

Example, if your widget code looks like:

<a href="http://whos.amung.us/stats/cgkoub7au35q/">
    <img src="http://whos.amung.us/widget/cgkoub7au35q.png" width="81" height="29" border="0" title="Click to see how many people are online" />
</a>

Change it to:

<a href="http://whos.amung.us/stats/cgkoub7au35q/">
    <img src="https://whos.amung.us/widget/cgkoub7au35q.png" width="81" height="29" border="0" title="Click to see how many people are online" />
</a>

The only difference is the
http
in the img tag has been converted to
https
.

As always, if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us.

Using the latest widget code? You Should be if not!

We've had a number of different widget codes over the years and as such we like to make sure our long time users update their codes to ensure they are getting the best performance possible from the widgets on their site.

About 3 years ago we converted the Javascript code from the traditional synchronous (sync) style to the newer asynchronous (async) style. The async version has the advantage of never blocking loading of page elements on your site, which would have been possible with the sync version.

Although the async code has been available for many years we are still seeing lots of sites using the sync version, so we'd like to provide this message to assist users in determining what sort of code they are running.

If the whos.amung.us widget code installed on your site looks something like the following code you are using the old sync version and we recommend you convert to the async version. Note: the code below is an example only, it shows a dummy site identifier (123456789012) and is for the small widget, the other types have slightly different formats.

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://widgets.amung.us/small.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">WAU_small('123456789012')</script>

If your code looks something like the following (again, this is an example, it will vary from widget style to widget style) then you are using our async code and all is good :)

<script id="_wau3b8">var _wau = _wau || []; _wau.push(["small", "123456789012", "3b8"]);
(function() {var s=document.createElement("script"); s.async=true;
s.src="http://widgets.amung.us/small.js";
document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(s);
})();</script>

We'd be happy to help you convert the code on your site to the async version if you are still using the sync version, feel free to contact us.

If you need a new widget code, just grab one from the showcase to ensure you have the latest code!

Seeing a whos.amung.us widget in your forum or blog posts unexpectedly?

There have been reports of some users reporting that a whos.amung.us widget is being added posts they make on their blogs or comments on forums, etc.

This is caused by a browser extension that users have previously installed that adds widget code to comments and posts. The extension often masquerading as Adobe Flash Player (which is not a browser extension/add-on, it is a plug-in) or some other video player type add-on/extension. Users should remove the extension if it is causing them problems, and please contact us with any details so we can get things sorted out.

We do not support adding our widget code to anything other than webpages, adding it to emails, browser extensions, or other software violates our terms of service and is not supported.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

Wibiya Toolbar Support

It's with great sadness that we learned out friends at Wibiya have decided to shutdown their toolbar product. We've worked closely with them since near day 1 and we're honored to work with them by providing our services through their toolbar - even near the end where we were the only third party service provider on the toolbar!

We wish everyone at Wibiya all the best in their future endeavors.

For our users who are currently using whos.amung.us through the Wibiya toolbar, don't worry you can still use our services! Simply grab a widget code from our showcase and replace the site id in the widget code with the site ID your Wibiya toolbar uses (contact us if you need help). By replacing the site id you'll retain all your existing stats.

If you are a whos.amung.us PRO user, you can simply generate a widget code in the "Widgets" section of the PRO Control Panel, and install it on your site.

Stats Dashboard Graphs Not Updating?

We've identified a very unique and rare bug on some users stats dashboards, where the historical charts we're displaying the same data and not updating (all other stats were working fine). This was due to an edge case where the data was being generated once and not on subsequent requests due to accidentally long cache times.

The issue has been fixed going forward, however some (extremely few) users may still see their charts not updating, in that case please contact us and let us know your stats page URL so we can get things fixed up for you right away.

Getting Unexpectedly Redirected to our Site?

We've had reports from a few users that when they try to browse the Internet, they constantly get redirected to our site.

This is not something we are doing.

This is due to a piece of malware on your system (typically a rogue Firefox or Chrome extension) that is using our services in a way that we do not allow or approve of. Our terms of service only allow our services to be used with the code supplied from our website with a website only and not within any other applications, such as a browser extension.

We do offer two official browser extensions, one for Chrome and one for Firefox, neither of which will ever redirect you when installed and used, they simply report the number of users on your sites without you needing to visit the stats pages.

How to fix: You simply need to disable browser extensions you have recently installed, they will not be called whos.amung.us, we have seen some masquerade as an Adobe Flash update or YouTube plugin or similar. You may also wish to run a malware scanner on your computer such as SpyBot Search & Destroy, or AVG - both of which offer free solutions.

If you have any problems, please contact us with as much information as possible (including the exact URL you are being redirected to) and we'll work with you to track down what is happening.

You can rest assured that none of our widgets or services can reveal any personal information about you whatsoever, it is just not information we have or will ever have. All of our widgets when installed on your site will act normally and will *never* redirect your users.

Running a Wordpress Site and Suddenly See our Widget on Your Site?

There appears to be a Wordpress plugin that is adding our widget along with whatever the plugin itself is doing and it is catching some users off guard when they suddenly see the widget appearing.
We do not offer an official Wordpress plugin at the moment, but there are 3rd party ones out there that provide an easy way to add our widget to Wordpress blogs, we don't officially support them but will do our best to do so of course.

Historical Data Blanks

Hi Guys,

As some of you noticed your historical data may have been blank for a brief period of time today, it will be back shortly if not already.

We lost network connectivity between some important machines and had to run on backup systems for a few minutes, while we transitioned things over to work around the lost connectivity. This has happened before and we (and our datacenter) are taking steps to prevent it in the future, those changes should be complete within a week or two and will really help things out as we prepare to launch a ton of new features in the very near future.

Thanks for bearing with us during this brief glitch and don't forget to follow us on Twitter, we try to post updates in real time there: Twitter Feed.

Internet Censorship

You may have noticed that a number of your favorite sites are not available today as they voluntarily black out their sites in protest of the SOPA and PIPA bills racing through the US Congress. We have joined in by censoring our logo for this day of action.

These bills (and others like them both in the US and abroad) have the power to drastically alter the very fabric of the Internet. Sites could be taken offline for simply linking to other sites.

This is not the way to attack the problem of piracy or anything else governments deem a 'problem'. We (as do many others) believe it would be a huge mistake to allow anything of this nature to become law. The Internet needs to remain free and open and no one should have the power to alter that.

Even though this is a US bill, if these bills were to pass, the effects would be far reaching and global - don't think you would not be affected if you are not a US citizen. Furthermore, there is talk of SOPA and PIPA being shelved, that is great - but that doesn't mean they won't come back in some other form.

If you have a website (and even if you don't) please consider joining in this day of action to make your voice heard. Read more about what you can do at americancensorship.org and one of the few non blacked out English Wikipedia pages. Tucows also has a great description of things over at their blog, as does Google - give them all a read.

We strive to respond to all of our user inquires as quickly as possible and I have to say we do a pretty good job with emails being answered in mere minutes a lot of the time and at most a few hours - providing top notch customer service is something we pride ourselves on.
So on that note, if you have emailed us and not received a response, make sure you check your spam or junk mail folder as sometimes our responses to you can end up there. In the same vein, if your spam filter is setup to auto delete messages or not deliver them to you at all then it is possible you may not get a response from us.
Tab Widget Mobile Browser Changes

Hi All,

We've made some changes to the way the red tab widget is handled in mobile browsers. The tab widget being the one that can be positioned at a fixed location along the browser edge of course, instead of being positioned at a specific location within the page content (like our other widgets).

After consulting with mobile users we've found the number one feedback issue is that in some mobile browsers the tab takes up too much screen real estate when zoomed in on a specific part of a page making it hard to read the content you're interested in. So, depending on the mobile browser you are using, you may notice that the widget does not appear along the browser edge when you load a site with it installed as you may be accustomed to. This is now normal since we've removed the rendering of the widget for some specific platforms/browsers that don't handle it all that well. For you website owners, don't worry the mobile user visits are still represented in your stats.

We'll make more adjustments as we test more platforms in detail, but if you notice any problems or have any feedback, please let us know, we always want to hear from our users and do our best to accomodate everyone.

Stay tuned to our Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/whosamungus for exciting new stuff coming very very soon ;)

'Phantom' Tab Widgets

A few people have brought it to our attention that new 'phantom' tab widgets are now showing up on their site, and some users are mistaking this as us somehow installing widgets on their site without permission.

First of all I'd just like to say that we have absolutely zero intention of installing a widget on your site or blog without your permission, and secondly it is impossible for us to do so without access to your blog account or HTML source of your site, it just won't happen, and we, of course, have no interest in doing so, ever!

Without getting too technical, what has happened with the users who let us know there was now a widget on their site when they weren't expecting it, is that they had previously attempted to install our floating tab widget on their site, however in all cases the widget code was incorrectly installed, and left in place even after no widget was visible (The widget code needs to be placed in between the <body> </body> tags in a site or it would not have worked). We did an update to the widget code yesterday (update was only to increase efficiency and make things faster) and as an unintended side effect, incorrectly installed tab widgets now function correctly, and appear as originally anticipated. Once these 'phantom' widgets started appearing we started getting user complaints, it took us a little while to figure out what was going on but we finally got it sorted out and this is the conclusion we've come to, and verified that this is indeed the case with all complaints we have received. Basically it boils down to: incorrectly installed code on a site now works in most cases due to an update yesterday :)

If you are experiencing a tab widget now being visible on your site that wasn't previously and you want to remove it, you simply have to search the HTML code of your site for a line that looks similar (it will not be exactly the same so don't copy it to do a find and replace) to the following and delete it:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://widgets.amung.us/tab.js"></script>
<script type=""text/javascript">WAU_tab('9qu8ltzp9ots', 'left-middle')</script>

If you are now experiencing a new tab widget and you want to keep it, please ensure that the code is located between the

tags of your site HTML to ensure proper operation, if it's in the <head&gt> </head>, or after the body section it is incorrectly installed. Of course we have a variety of other widget styles available at http://whos.amung.us/showcase/ if you don't like the tab style.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Network Failure

Greetings all, I'd just like to address the intermittent downtime we had Sept 12, 2010 from 0:00 to 16:30 PST.

We utilize datacenter services from Steadfast Networks (http://www.steadfast.net) and they are absolutely great for the most part, however during the scheduled replacement of their core routing equipment some unforseen problems occurred that lead to downtime, slowdowns, and a host of other problems. They are still working on fully repairing the network and getting the new hardware in place. We made some changes in order to mitigate as much downtime as we could and keep the site up and running as much as possible and for the most critical parts of the site. We are still running on this configuration until we get the all clear from Steadfast at which time we'll be back at 100% capacity.

I'd like to apologize to all of our users for any issues they experienced, as you know we normally have very fast response times and Steadfast is a big part of this and we will be working with them to mitigate the chances of this ever happening again.

We were keeping users up to date with any info that we could get our hands on through our Twitter account, we don't use it as much as we should but we are going to try to change that http://www.twitter.com/whosamungus

Update: There is still intermittent packet loss in the datacenter, and the source of the problem is being replaced.
