First Michelin stars awarded in Singapore

Singapore is now home to 29 Michelin-starred restaurants, following the launch of the world famous guide book’s first ever Southeast Asian edition.

The Michelin Guide Singapore 2016 features one three-starred restaurant, six two-starred establishments and 22 restaurants with one Michelin star, including some street food outlets. Michelin said its inaugural Singapore selection reflected “the richness of the gastronomic scene in this Southeast Asian city”.

“Singapore is a real crossroads of trade and commerce, with multiple culinary influences and repertoire that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors,” commented Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guides.

“As the city has a worldwide reputation for its street food and a high flying gastronomic scene created by talented young chefs who have emerged over the last few years, here’s where our inspectors have discovered real jewels.”

This only three-starred restaurant in Singapore is Joël Robuchon, the famous chef’s contemporary French restaurant. Michelin remarked; “From the quality of the ingredients – with only the best selected – to the finesse of the cooking, through to the impressive wine list that includes over 1,000 references, the experience offered by the chef Joël Robuchon is quite simple exceptional.”

In fact Joël Robuchon now holds five Michelin stars in Singapore, with his other restaurant, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, picking up two stars. Five other establishments were awarded two Michelin stars, including André, by Taiwanese chef André Chiang, two French restaurants, Odette and Les Amis, the Japanese Shoukouwa restaurant and Chinese Shisen Hanten.

And among the 22 Singaporean restaurants to have obtained a single Michelin star were the Peranakan-style Candlenut, Italian Terra, Australian Osia, along with street food outlets including Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle and Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle.

The Michelin Guide Singapore 2016, which marks the guide’s first ever Southeast Asian edition, is now available in bookstores and from the website, guide.michelin.sg.

Certain places in India, China and South East Asia allow for locals to spit in public. This doesn’t mean you need to follow suit. Keep the hygiene practices at a high standard and you’ll avoid much trouble, especially in heavily policed countries such as Singapore which has laws against spitting in public and chewing gum. There’s been stories about Singapore cancelling visas of high profile politicians who are known offenders of this habit.

#3 Know A Country’s Alcohol Laws

Every man loves a good drink and it’s imperative to know where alcohol consumption is allowed to take place when abroad. Islamic countries prohibit alcohol altogether and the gift of a bottle to a muslim is considered offensive. So keep walking, Johnnie. Do not drink in public in the Middle East and save it for the hotel room instead.

#4 Respect The Culture

There’s a fine line between embracing and insulting one’s culture so be sure to take into account all aspects to avoid the cliches. In Japan where tradition and culture is still highly regarded, be sure to bow as you greet and leave, and remove shoes when entering a guest venue. In Europe, follow the conventions of the church by having shoulders covered. It might not be your religion but it’s theirs and you’re in their house.

#5 Watch Your Sign Language

In places like Spain, Iran, Bangladesh and Turkey the thumbs up is considered offensive so keep those commonly used hand signs in check. In Malaysia, pointing fingers (except for the thumb) is considered a big no-no and using a left hand in Indonesia is disrespectful. And no, a slap on the bum is unacceptable as a greeting anywhere in the world. Put away that hi-five.

#6 Curb Your Public Displays Of Affection

PDA is sickening in any language but it’s definitely not illegal. In Western countries PDA such as kissing, hugging, holding hands is common practice. Do it in some Asian countries and the Middle East and you could be incarcerated for being a top lover boy. Keep it in your pants until you get behind closed doors.

#7 Leave As You Arrived

A true gentleman never leaves a guest’s home in a mess after a visit and this same rule applies to visiting another country. Leaving your mark behind on a grand monument is the biggest offender here whether it be tagging your name or stapling a lock of your ex-girlfriend’s to a Mayan voodoo statue. Just don’t do it.

Orphaned Aussie tree kangaroo ready for move to Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo welcomes its newest resident next week - a "miracle" orphaned tree kangaroo from Australia.

Makaia, who was dubbed a "miracle" after being adopted by a wallaby when his mother died suddenly, received his final health checks today (June 27), said the Adelaide Zoo in a press release.

When Makaia arrives at his new home in Singapore next week, he will meet his new mate - a female Goodfellow's tree kangaroo from Sydney's Taronga Zoo. Keepers hope the pair will mate and start a family of their own.

Makaia was just seven weeks old when he was orphaned. In a world first for conservation, keepers and veterinarians at Adelaide Zoo saved Makaia's life by using a surrogate yellow-footed rock-wallaby mother - a technique never before attempted with a tree kangaroo.

'Cross-fostering', a special breeding technique that Adelaide Zoo pioneered in the 1990s, involves the transfer of endangered joeys to the pouch of a surrogate mother of a different wallaby species.

This accelerates the breeding cycle of the original wallaby, allowing the female to increase its reproduction rate up to six or eight times in some species. This has helped Adelaide Zoo to build the captive population of an endangered species much more quickly.

Makaia stayed with his wallaby mother for about three-and-a-half months until he became too big for her pouch. A keeper then looked after him, becoming his third "mum".

Dr Ian Smith, a senior veterinarian at Adelaide Zoo, says Makaia thrived under the care of his adoptive mothers and is now a happy and healthy maturing adult.

"We've had great success over the years cross-fostering between wallaby species, but the specialised breeding technique had never been used on a tree kangaroo before, so it was a huge achievement for the zoo," Dr Smith said.

"It's now time for him to start his next chapter and we're confident he's going to do really well," he added.

"He is extremely genetically valuable for the region and we are hopeful he will form an important part of the international breeding programme working to save this endangered species from extinction."

While happy to see Makaia grow into a healthy adult and start a new adventure in Singapore, his keepers in Adelaide will miss him.

"Of course we will be sad to see Makaia go, but we're incredibly proud of what we have achieved as a zoo and to have been able to give him a chance at a wonderful life where he can make a real difference to the conservation of his wild cousins," said Adelaide Zoo Natives team leader Gayl Males.

"He has earnt himself a special place in the hearts of the zoo's staff and visitors with his cheeky personality and amazing strength."

Goodfellow's tree kangaroos inhabit the rainforests of New Guinea.

A distant relative of the kangaroo and wallaby, the species lives in trees and rarely descends to the ground. Distinguishable by its striking back stripe, the Goodfellow's tree kangaroo is classified by the IUCN as endangered in the wild due to overhunting and loss of habitat.

New rules for long term visitors of Singapore

FOREIGNERS studying, visiting and working in Singapore on a long term will be issued a new pass in the coming months, as part of Government’s effort to enhance national security.

The new Long Term Pass (LTP) will replace the current stamp endorsement on travel documents and the paper-laminated Disembarkation/ Embarkation(r D/E) for foreign holders of Student’s Pass (STP), long term visit pass, Employment Pass (EP) and Dependant’s Pass.

The LTP card will have better security features compared to the present paper-laminated card, with similar biometric features as those in the Singapore National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) to provide a secure means of identifying individuals and facilitate travel, said a Government statement on Wednesday.

The LTP card will carry the photograph and fingerprint of all cardholders aged 15 and above. Fingerprint registration for those between six and 14 years is optional, and children five years and below are exempted.

With the added personal identifiers on the LTP card, government agencies such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will be able to verify the cardholder’s identity through face and fingerprint matching.

The enhanced security features will also deter forgery and fraudulent use of the card. LTP cardholders will also be able to enjoy expedited and automated immigration clearance at major checkpoints around Singapore.

All new long term visit pass and student pass holders will be issued with the new cards in the second half of the year, while existing holders will have theirs converted to the new pass in phases, or when they are renewed.

Sentosa View Hostel in Singapore

If you want to stay in a hostel which is quite nice, clean and affordable then Sentosa view is a nice option. This hostel is located in spottiswood park road. It is close to Outram park MRT & Tanjan pagar MRT. Lots of food courts and shopping markets nearby. Also the hostel is near to the city area.

You can find two kind of rooms in this hostel. A room with six beds and without bahtroom so you have to use the common bathroom which is outside (there are two common washroom). Another room with six beds but the washroom is inside the room (attach washroom). A room will cost you between $15 - $28 Singapore dollar. It depends on the season as well. There are so many free facilities available in the hostel which includes:
Free access to internet. There are also two computer available for traveller withou laptop
Free breakfast
They do have water boiler and microwave oven

New Long Term Pass card

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) is introducing the new Long Term Pass (LTP) card - for all foreigners residing in Singapore on a long term Visit Pass, Student's Pass, Employment Pass and Dependant's Pass.

The card seeks to replace the Visit Pass endorsement in the passports of all long-term stayers.
All card holders will be required to produce their LTP card during immigration clearance when leaving or entering Singapore. If they decide to ever leave the country for good, they will have to surrender their LTP cards.

The cards are similar in look and feel to the NRIC cards held by citizens and permanent residents of Singapore, but are green in colour (see sample below). They are also equipped with similar security features.

Makan Sutra, new food place in Singapore

Apart from Newton Circus hawker center that is well know to everyone inside and outside of Singapore, there is another nice hawker’s center in Singapore that is less crowded and has almost every Singapore’s signature food and drinks. That is the Makan Sutra which is located just beside The Esplanade, or behind the Marina Square shopping center.

Take a look at the surroundings and the settings. Its a nice place for dinner with friends. After dinner, you can always visit Esplanade for a theatrical movie, or walk around the bay, or go to the Merlion. And of course shopping around Marina Square and the other malls surrounding the City Hall.

Taxis will stop at taxi pick-up points on the arrivals level. The journey to city costs between S$18.00 and S$32.00 and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Airport Shuttle

The Airport Shuttle service uses a 9-seater coach and serves all hotels in Singapore with the exception of Changi Village Hotel and hotels on the Sentosa Island. The service leaves every 15 minutes from 0600hr to midnight and 30 minutes at other hours. Chartering is available. Please approach the Airport Shuttle Counter on the arrivals level.

Train (MRT)

The Changi Airport MRT Station is located under Terminals 2 and 3, and is linked to the arrivals and departures by escalators and lifts. The first train arrives at around 0530hr and the last leaves at 2318hr.

Public Bus

Public bus service 36 goes to the city. The first bus arrives at around 0600hr and the last leaves at midnight. A single fare costs below S$2.00 and takes about an hour. Bus stops are located under Terminals 1, 2 or 3. Please prepare the exact fare as no change will be given.

Limousine TaxiThe service uses premium 5-seater and 7-seater taxis and brings you to any destination in Singapore at a flat rate. Please approach the Limousine Taxi Counter at the Arrival Halls.

Little India, Singapore

Singapore too has a Little India, which is the focal point of its Indian community. This place gives to you an overdose of inputs for your senses.

The trademark strong, heady scent of spices and beautiful smells of incense would capture your attention. Again, you could listen to blasting Hindi music around, shops there are a display of colours with colorful silk saris, sculptures, silverware, brass ware and wood carvings in abundance.

If you have garnered the habit of bargaining from your mom, this is the place to be. Mustafa cafe is one such place you can look for cheap bargains at and also it is open 24 X 7. Worth a visit on your shopping spree are Tekka Mall and Sim Lim Square.

Tuesday and Fridays are the Hindu holy days, gods are honoured with simple strands of flowers and on those days you will find plenty of small stalls selling flowers to be offered to the gods. Visit one of the many colourful Hindu temples, Mosques or Churches. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple on Serangoon.

Abdul Gaffoor Mosque, founded in 1859, is an historic monument in Singapore. There is no lack of restaurants in Little India. Make sure to try the ’Teh Tarik’, a hand pulled cup of tea or some spicy Indian curry before you leave. For only a few dollars you could get a good meal in any of the restaurants.

During Deepawali (usually between October/November), the Indian festival of lights, Little India is transformed into a explosion of colourful lights and music and the streets are bustling with shoppers.

Suntec City Mall is a shopping centre in Singapore, located within the Marina Centre subzone of the Downtown Core Planning Area. It also offers a club house called the Suntec City Guild House located on the fifth storey. The large size of the mall boasts some 360 outlets spread over 3 floors in an L-shaped configuration.

If you visit there, don't forget to have a photograph of the Fountain of Wealth, which Suntec claims to be the largest fountain in the world; this claim has however been contested, with Fountain Hills in Arizona also claiming the title which the Guinness World Records has recently withdrawn the "Largest Fountain".

5 Must Visit Places in Singapore

1. The Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is among the most visited tourist destination in Asia. If travelling with kids, this is one of the must-visit spots on the island. The Singapore Zoo is been much acclaimed for its open landscape and spaciousness where in the animals live in enclosures simulating that of their natural habitat.

The zoo is filled with exotic animals like white tigers, polar bears, and Asian elephants etc. In addition, the Singapore Night Safari is one of Singapore’s premier tourist attractions. 8th Forber CEO Conference in Singapore

This year's conference, to be held in Singapore for the second year running, brings together more than 400 “heroes of capitalism” to discuss key global issues of the day.

Singapore has confirmed high-profile speakers including ArcelorMittal president and chief executive officer (CEO) Lakshmi N. Mittal, actor and One Foundation, China founder Jet Li and Sybase USA chairman and CEO John Chen.

The Malaysian speakers include Tune Group, Malaysia chairman Datuk Tony Fernandes and YTL Corp Bhd managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.

Attendance to the conference, to be held from Sept 8 to 10 in Sentosa, is exclusive and limited to chairmen, CEOs and presidents of corporations at a US$8,000 fee.

The conference has been held in Asia since 2001. In the last eight years, it has travelled to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

This year's theme is “The Winning Hand”, in reference to a winning hand in a game of cards.

Issues to be discussed include how to reinvest and expand a business once it has been dealt a winning hand, the issue of philanthropy, as well as the credit crunch and the sub-prime problem.
