But our faithful companion be it dog, cat or rabbit does require protection from harsh weather conditions so let’s make things as comfortable as possible.

Timber structures are ideal for our furry friend, but a dedicated house is expensive and takes up valuable garden space. Timber is naturally heat retentive (unlike concrete) but a few inexpensive measures can be taken to provide adequate levels of comfort.

A wooden pallet will get your pet off the cold concrete floor, and heated electric dog beds are popular. Concrete Buildings with their ribbed internal construction lend themselves to easily becoming fully lined with polystyrene insulated plasterboard or ply. Hint: On the market today are an abundance of adhesive compounds designs specifically for bonding concrete to wood. The rebates in the concrete panels can be further improved with the addition of insulation.

A suspended roof can you added with relative ease as the concrete panels have a ledge to rest your roof and can be further supported from the trusses which are rarely more than 6ft apart.

If you intend building a dedicated dog house then often you sectional garage supplier can incorporate and internal partition wall separating you garage from the living space. You may also wish to consider adding drainage channel to your concrete floor to easily hose-down and to clean up any excrement.

My dog is comforted by the radio so when considering adding electrics to your sectional building in the UK remember that this work is governed by Local Authority Building Control.

Web:
http://www.4concretegarages.com/garages_readabouttherange.asp
www.greenhousesupply.co.uk
Web:

Without doubt this is due to the excellent value, unrivalled quality and outstanding service of Lidget Concrete Garages and our customer feedback is testament to this fact.

Lidget Concrete Garages are the North’s largest manufacturer of prefabricated buildings. Despite their size, being independently owned Lidget Concrete is sympathetic to market conditions and that is why they were amongst the first of the garage manufacturers to reduce the rate of VAT duty and the only manufacturer to be holding a post-XMAS sale.

View our range of Lidget Concrete Garages at the regions largest display facility: The Garden Buildings Centre, Hazlehurst Lane, Stonegravels, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S41 7LX FREEPHONE 0800-318359

Web:
http://www.4concretegarages.com/
Web:

The Nationwide Building Society suggests that by adding an extra bedroom can increase a home's price by an average of 10.8% across Britain and converting existing space such as a loft will have much less impact on the price. The addition of a single garage will on average see the property rise by 11.1% or 20.4% for a double width.

Why? The answer is simple; the Home Office has published figures that nearly 1.7 million vehicle-related thefts were recorded during 2006-07 making up nearly 19% of all recorded crime. Securing your car or bike offers peace of mind as well as lowering your insurance premium.

Modern sectional buildings are offered with a host of security options including secure steel framed main garage doors, multi-point locking, laminated secure windows and the benefit of steel reinforced concrete sections which are virtually impossible to penetrate.

A concrete sectional garage requires little more than a flat concrete raft foundation, if it is below 30m² then Building Regulations will not be required. Relaxation in the Planning Rules allow most home owners to add this addition without seeking council approval although it is suggested that you contact your Local Authority for guidance in this matter. For convenience, most concrete garages are constructed in less than a day.

http://www.4concretegarages.com/garages_readabouttherange.asp
Web:

Land acquisition further saw the demise of the traditional garden centre in lieu of residential property development.

The number of garden building showrooms has dwindled further as the blue chip owned manufacturers prefer to deal with smaller numbers of resellers in an effort to minimise cost. Inevitably the consumer suffers as you will have to travel much further in order to view a display building (not to mention regional and national pricing strategies which follow).

The independents remain a hardy bunch of individuals who have typically weathered the recession and with a good business model which rarely falters from outside pressures. These businesses can often be found on the fringes of industrial estates and towns and typically occupy significantly more floor space than a garden centre can offer. Look under Sheds, Garden Buildings & Garages in your local directory for your closest dealer.

It mustn’t be forgotten that a new breed of internet entrepreneurs’ exist but with the largest manufacturers prohibiting such activities it is no surprise that brand choice is limited. Besides, what other item of this value would you purchase without viewing first?

Come and view the regions largest display from an independent dealership offering impartial choice from the country’s leading brands of concrete sectional garage.

The Garden Buildings Centre
Sheffield Road
Stonegravels
Chesterfield, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Email: nicp@garagesconcrete.com
http://www.4concretegarages.com/how_to_find_us.asp
Web:

The limitations in the technology up to that time allowed only a concrete slab (post and pillar) construction and the roof was almost always of corrugated asbestos.

These days modern manufacturing techniques and innovations in the concrete garage industry allow for tall narrow upright panels up to heights of 7ft6in(2.29m) and almost all (with the exception of a few brands) supply these panels in a spar aggregate (pebble dash) finish. Some brands have broken the mould (pardon the pun!) by the application of a brick effect finish choosing from either factory applied brick effect or an on-site application. The application of texture and colour after the garage is built does produce a seamless finish with no indication of the sectional nature of the building.

It goes without saying that the corrugated roofing panels’ common to these buildings no longer contains asbestos but remarkably asbestos sheets were supplied into the late 1980’s. It is hard to distinguish one substance from another as you will find no manufacturers mark or stamp up to this day. Modern day variations on the corrugated theme include coloured roofing options and a fibre-cement tile which looks remarkably like the real thing. Cold steel roofs should be avoided in humid and damp climates for reasons that are plainly obvious.

Maintenance free has been the rage since the introduction of uPVC windows and fascias, and a wealth of accessories including PVC fascias often available in a choice of natural wood finishes such as mahogany or light-oak, access doors including PVC French doors or woodgrain effect security doors can all be specified.
Web:

What about access to the site? Will planning permission be required?

Tolerances vary between manufacturers greatly but for the majority of manufacturers who employ (rather than sub-contract) their installation, the following rules apply.

1/ it isn't necessary for your concrete base to be perfectly level and to a moderate degree a concrete building can built within certain tolerances. Always if you are in doubt arrange for the dealer to perform a survey but as a general rule most PENT roof garages on bases which fall consistency more than 1in(25mm) or APEX 2in(50mm) in any direction cannot be built.

2/ its recommended that a concrete floor be 6in (150mm) longer and wider that the proposed structure (most manufactures quote external concrete garage dimensions). Whilst again this isn’t an absolute, do be mindful that your base must also be square otherwise the garage may ‘fall’ off the base.

Concrete garages are delivered by HGV and 7.5t rigid vehicles and so ideally, (but not an absolute requirement) will a wagon is able to park alongside your drive? As forklift delivery is preferred, will 8ft access be available with no height restriction? It is likely that you will be provided with the opportunity to complete a ‘Help the Driver’ form to advise on any access difficulties.

Has Planning Permission or Building Control been approved? Since OCT-2008, rules have changed but this doesn’t offer a complete exemption.

What’s in a guarantee? When qualified and employed installers are substituted for sub-contractors (on piece work) quality of installation will inevitably suffer. Ask the question, ‘are your installers employed’ if the answer is no then it is suggested that you walk away.

What about access to the site? Will planning permission be required? Fortunately some manufacturers through experience offer pre-bundled and discounted garage price packages which include many of the popular accessories commonly specified such as maintenance free PVC fascias and windows, brick front pillars, guttering, and decorative roofing options.

On the other hand, no two concrete garages have to be alike due to the array of items on offer.

Back to basics, once a design of garage is chosen you maybe presented with a choice of finishes. By default a majority of concrete sectional buildings are supplied in spar wall chippings or ‘pebbledash’ finishes. The spar and particularly the larger Classic spar contain numerous colours that do tend to blend in well in most environments. On the other hand you may choose prefabricated and factory applied brick effect or on-site application. In these instances viewing is recommended particularly if the supplier offers only a limited choice of colours and textures.

Decided on a basic design and wall finish, loosely you are looking at two categories; security and lifestyle options (although the two cross-over in some instances).

Security is often the very reason why you have chosen to replace or add a concrete garage to your property, perhaps you have just bought a new car or motorbike or wish to move appliances and tools from the house or garden shed? In any instance some precautions can be taken without ever parting with any further money. 1/ Regardless of the number of locking points ensure that your garage door is secured within a steel fabricated frame. 2/ When selecting a brand of concrete garage make sure that the main and access doors have flush mounted and quite separate locks from the handles. 3/ Think very seriously as to whether the window and the position of window make the garage vulnerable.

Further security additions can frosted and wired glass windows, 4-point door and 3-point access door locking points, laminated glass and remarkably an automatic garage door motor.

One would imagine that a surely a luxury such as an automatic garage door opener would not be classified as a security measure? but think again. Have you ever tried to push a car when it is in gear? Take this analogy to lifting a garage door attached to a motor.

Lifestyle, well lets face it, maintenance free. Much of the technology which makes our life easier such as PVC windows and fascias can be added onto a new concrete garage. Likewise PVC technology allows for a variety of colours and finishes including mahogany and light-oak woodgrain and stylish white PVC. In some instances these same finishes extend to the main doors be it using a technology different to PVC. Metalwork such as the main and side doors is generally supplied in durable white powder-coated finishes which will last a lifetime. Avoid steel Plastisol finishes as the lighter colours (particular white) fade quickly and require reapplication of paint.

Consider changes in door style and operation, whether brick front posts and the available finishes are complimentary to your property or if you would prefer a tile effect or coloured roof. Again, a word of warning it is no coincidence that steel roofs are often supplied under-lined or with anti-condensation treatments, they may also be noisier than their fibre-cement counterparts.

Nicolas Paice has almost 20yrs retail experience with concrete sectional buildings and with all the market leading brands. For example this height is equal to that of a Land Rover Discover and a Classic Range Rover and that’s before your consider the roof rack and aerial!

Most manufacturers of concrete sectional buildings offer an increased eaves and door clearance; some can achieve greater clearance simply by exchanging the main door for vertical-lift ‘shutter’ type operation. There is a common misconception that roof style will affect actual internal clearance, this simply is not true.

We recommend an eaves height no less that 7ft6in (2.29m) as other factors such as the slope towards your garage may reduce your actual clearance as well as a weather-bar situated behind the door. Only a few manufacturers can offer 7ft6in panel height as the technology behind fabricating such a tall panel escapes some brands.

It is worthwhile to note that even at 2.29m to eaves this building is still below one of the planning thresholds which places a restriction at 3.0m to eaves and 4.0m to ridge height.

Find our more about our range of concrete garages at http://www.4concretegarages.com/garages_readabouttherange.asp or visit our showroom and for even greater clearances suitable for minibuses, vans and lorries read about of commercial and industrial extra height buildings at http://www.4concretegarages.com/industrial_commercial_buildings.asp

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) Ltd
Hazlehurst Lane (corner of Sheffield Road B6057)
Stonegravels
Chesterfield
Derbyshire, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Fax 0871 661 5234
Email: sales@thediyconservatorycentre.co.uk
Web:

Often the client can specify this sheeting in one of 10 popular colours to match the local environment, regulations or corporate image.

Generally these buildings offer much greater under-door clearance than their domestic counterparts and can be specified at varied heights to achieve clearances for minibuses, trailers, forklift trucks, lorries and buses. Because of height, a roller door is generally the preferred type of operation with options for automation.

In almost all cases a commercial project such as this will require planning permission and should the internal floor area being exceeding 30m² then so too Building Control and we can assist fully with such matters including generation of full structural calculations and elevations.

One of the advantages of specifying a prefabricated concrete building is that it is often constructed within a day.

Battery Garages: It is popular for county councils and private landlords to offer multiple garage units often referred to as ‘battery garages’, the buyer may specify the number of units they require and the individual overall size and height. It is not uncommon for local authorities to add additional security measures to these buildings or ironmongery such as ‘crash bar’ fitted to the rear of the building and in order to protect their investment.

You may also wish to read about our commercial light-industrial buildings on our WebPages http://www.4concretegarages.com/industrial_commercial_buildings.asp

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) Ltd
Hazlehurst Lane (corner of Sheffield Road B6057)
Stonegravels
Chesterfield
Derbyshire, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Fax 0871 661 5234
Email: sales@thediyconservatorycentre.co.uk
Web:

Well, the origins of at least two of the larger manufacturers of prefabricated buildings can be traced back to one original company. Other companies have simply taken advantage of the lower running costs attributed to land, labour and materials found in Yorkshire.

Land: A great of area is required to manufacture, store and thoroughly dry concrete garages. Most often the steel and woodwork is fabricated on-site. As a business expands it requires room for more heavy goods vehicles; you cannot afford to be landlocked.

Labour: In such a specialised industry having a skilled labour force is imperative in the supply and installation of concrete sectional garages. Yorkshire is renowned for its heavy industry and it is helpful to have so many installers, technicians, fabricators and joiners available to meet with seasonal sales demands.

Materials: The construction of a concrete building requires masses of steel something which Sheffield and South Yorkshire as a whole continues to specialise in.

As a whole, the cost of living in the North of England is much less than those in the South. This offers a price advantage to Yorkshire grown concrete buildings that is hard to emulate in others parts of the country.

Read about of range of ‘Yorkies’ on WebPages http://www.4concretegarages.com/garages_readabouttherange.asp

Or visit our large showroom

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) Ltd
Hazlehurst Lane (corner of Sheffield Road B6057)
Stonegravels
Chesterfield
Derbyshire, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Fax 0871 661 5234
Email: sales@thediyconservatorycentre.co.uk

Background: The author has almost 20yrs retail experience in the concrete garage trade. This is a handy addition if you have ever considered separating your lathe or washer/dryer from your precious car. Do ensure however that you have left sufficient clearance after your car to allow the internal door to open and enough room to house the depth of any appliances or workbench. As a minimum you will require at least 15ft internal length to accommodate your car and a further 6ft providing room for domestic equipment or a workbench and adequate walkway and door clearance.

Ensure that your chosen garage brand offers levels of installation ensuring that the walls are mastic sealed and the floors include an internal sand/cement fillet. Opt for heaviest concrete panels available, we suggest at 2(cwt) and a minimum 2¾ inches thick and reinforced.

Look for increased internal eaves options particularly if you have considered a suspended roof, most garages are constructed from 6ft6in high panels but look out for those containing an internal timber ‘ring beam’ raising internal heights by up to 4in.

The rib design of the internal walls of the spar/pebbledash garages does readily facilitate the addition of a plasterboard lining; you may even consider insulated plasterboard. The plasterboard is attached using an adhesive designed to bond concrete and wood together; this can be purchased from many DIY stores or timber merchants.

Some concrete garages are sold with optional batten bearer lining clips but if the garage is lined in such a manner it will reduce the internal sizes fairly significantly.

Ends

Find our more about our range of concrete garages at http://www.4concretegarages.com/garages_readabouttherange.asp or visit our showroom.

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) Ltd
Hazlehurst Lane (corner of Sheffield Road B6057)
Stonegravels
Chesterfield
Derbyshire, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Fax 0871 661 5234
Email: sales@thediyconservatorycentre.co.uk
Web:

Asbestos cement normally contains from about 5% of white asbestos by weight.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which was used within the concrete garage sector up until the late 1980s. Modern concrete garages no longer contain asbestos within their roof structure preferring to use reinforced cement fibre. Neither material can be identified by any markings and only chemical analysis will prove that asbestos is present.

The mere presence of asbestos does not necessarily create a health risk and the removal of asbestos cement sheets is not governed by any regulatory body although it is strongly recommended that you/your appointed contractors adheres to safe working methods.
Thoroughly douse the material before starting work. You are advised to introduce a suitable wetting agent such as washing-up liquid, into the water before saturation.
Operatives are recommended to wear RPE/PPE (Respiratory/Personal Protective Equipment) to protect from inhalation of dust particles.
Avoid breaking asbestos panels unnecessarily but if this is necessary continue to wet down the area that you are working.
The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) offers a nationwide garage demolition service and a price maybe obtained on-line at http://www.4concretegarages.com/concrete_garage_double.asp

You may also read about our modern fibre-cement roofing panels at http://www.4concretegarages.com/concrete_garage_single.asp#14

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) Ltd
Hazlehurst Lane (corner of Sheffield Road B6057)
Stonegravels
Chesterfield
Derbyshire, S41 7LX
FREEPHONE 0800 318359
Fax 0871 661 5234
Email: sales@thediyconservatorycentre.co.uk
Web:

If it’s an eyesore it may diminish the value of your property whilst an independent survey by a leading Building Society has shown that your investment and more can be recouped with the addition of a new garage.

You may only purchase a concrete building once or maybe twice in your lifetime and so our advice is to ignore the marketing ‘spin’ and make your informed choice using the following set of guidelines.

Testimonials: Many of us may already have friends and relatives who have recently purchased such a building. Where did they buy it from? What is the brand of the garage? Did the whole transaction run smoothly? After all, a company's reputation is only as good as its last customer interaction.

Construction: Not all garage companies offer the same level of installation and guarantee. Ensure that the concrete panels are mastic sealed, that an internal cement fillet is provided. One also imagines that if something as a simple a leak was reported the manufacturer would without quibble rectify the fault? Don’t hold your breathe, a guarantee rosette maybe brandished but some guarantee statements contain clauses designed to tie the consumer in a noose.

Brand: Many of the components found within concrete buildings are household brand names with service and support to match. Enquire as to the brand of the main door for example, if you don’t recognise the name then walk away.

Concrete Panels: Take a tape measure, not all concrete panels are alike. Accept nothing less than 2¾ inches thick reinforced and vibrated concrete panels. Enquire as to the weight of each panel, heaviest is best we suggest (2cwt per panel) furthermore ensure that your panels are securely bolted in at least at three-points.

Viewing: You shouldn’t have to travel far to view a concrete garage display, most of the leading brands have representation generally no more than 20miles apart throughout the UK. Are the display models well kept? Were you offered sound and knowledgeable advice? These are key pointers toward the kind of company you maybe dealing with.

Payment: All manufacturers will request payment prior to delivery. Be wary of those looking for payment at instigation of order. Avoid paying in cash, cheque or debit card. If you have one available use a credit card in order to provide card protection for your purchase.

Background: The author has almost 20yrs retail experience in the concrete garage trade. As well as advising on the most suitable building per application advice is also tendered on groundwork preparation and all aspects of planning and building control. The writer resides in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK and operates from one of the regions largest concrete garage showroom.

Web:

This simply isn’t true. Read on…
Usually, in the majority of situations, no. Planning permission is not normally required due to the nature of our product - i.e. "portable sectional building" - providing that the structure is within certain size and height limits which in turn are governed by the type and other aspects of your property. The usual criteria to meet to avoid planning permission are...

• The proposed building is not in front of the building line.
• The proposed building is under 30 sq. metres and under 70 cubic metres in volume (or 50 cubic metres for terrace houses or houses within a conservation area).
• Your property is not in a Conservation area or a listed building.
• The building is less that 4m in height
• The property has few alternations (attached or within 5m distance)

We can give guidance, but we suggest that you talk to your local planning officer if in doubt.

Also recommended is the booklet: "Planning A Guide for Householders" by the Department of the Environment. It may be available in your local library. Often your Local Authority offers a free-of-charge Householders Enquiry Form where they will consider your proposals and formally respond.

You may need permission if you intend to use your building for commercial use (i.e. an office), or if it goes against original planning permission for the house.

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) offer FREE Technical drawings for submission to your local Planning Authority.

Examples of Volume M³(Planning) and Floor Area M²(Building Regulations)

Pent Standard Height 8ft6in x 16ft3in
23.44 M³
11.71 M²
Pent 7ft6in High Eaves 8ft6in x 16ft3in
27.01 M³
11.71 M²
Apex Standard Height 8ft6in x 16ft3in
24.50 M³
11.71 M²
Apex High Eaves 8ft6in x 16ft3in
28.07 M³
11.71 M²
Pent Double 16ft6in x 20ft3in
61.36 M³
29.36 M²
Pent Double 18ft6in x 18ft3in
62.00 M³
29.68 M²
Find our more at http://www.4concretegarages.com/
Web:

A Customer Care Promise that is unique in the industry. A commitment which promises total satisfaction. A promise which has no exclusions and no small print.

Well, one imagines if something as a simple a leak was reported this manufacturer would without quibble rectify the fault? Don’t hold your breathe.

The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) offers total commitment to its customers and we believe that we do not have a single unhappy customer. Indeed, Mr. J of Sheffield was visited by one of our own engineers within 24hrs of reporting his dissatisfaction.

You may only purchase a concrete building once or maybe twice in your lifetime and so our advice is to ignore the marketing ‘spin’, a company's reputation is only as good as its last customer interaction. Our concrete garages use only recognised branded components from market leaders including Hörmann and Eternit; our panels 2¾ inches thick reinforced, machine vibrate pre-cast concrete panels Grade 11 'Classic Spar' pebbledash finish which we believe to be thicker and denser than the majority (if not all) of our competitors. Furthermore, flush jointed concrete panels, mastic sealed and securely three-point bolted ensures longevity.

Should you experience any problems during the term of your building you can be rest assured that you are dealing with a company that has sufficient ‘clout’ and resources in order to cheerfully and swiftly put things right.

Find us at www.4concretegarages.com
Web:

Why do all the leading brands of concrete sectional buildings candidly withhold their on-line prices from the consumer?

In this modern world of information at your fingertips why do the G3 group of manufacturers purposely conceal their prices? It isn’t from a lack of resources, one company indeed is PLC owned!

Well, the veil has been lifted by a young entrepreneur Nick Paice and his company The Garden Buildings Centre (Chesterfield) http://www.4concretegarages.com/

Log-in, look-up and gain a price for a variety of concrete buildings in literally seconds wherever you may live in the UK.

Nick Paice commented “As an independent distributor we like to think of our business as a place where modern technology meets traditional values to give the customer the best of both worlds. And all of course, at the best possible prices! We offer our customers unbiased and impartial advice so that the most appropriate model choice is made first time, every time! So, whether you desire a simple yet secure outbuilding or shed for your motorbike or you are a council specifying a battery of garages you can be rest assured that our experts are at hand to assist with all your concrete building requirements”

“Whether you’re a seasoned Internet surfer, used to buying goods and services on-line or a relative novice to this streamlined, modern way of doing business you can be reassured that behind our ‘cyberspace company’ lies a traditional and long-established family business with over 30 years experience of the garden buildings industry.
”

Ends
Web:
