Envy is one of the most dangerous forms of hostility because it rarely appears as an open attack. An envious person may hide his feelings behind advice or compliments, then secretly work to weaken someone who is more successful than he is. For this reason, it can sometimes be wise not to display your success in a way that provokes others. But when envy becomes deeply rooted and turns into an unavoidable rivalry, hiding your superiority may no longer help. At that point, the best response to an envious person may be to keep succeeding until what he wanted to use against you becomes a source of even greater strength.

In Renaissance Rome, Michelangelo had established himself as one of the greatest artists of his time. His sculptures inspired admiration, and his extraordinary talent gave him growing status among artists and powerful people. But as a person rises, there are sometimes others who see that success as a threat to their own position.

One of those people was the famous architect Donato Bramante.

Bramante looked at Michelangelo’s talent with rivalry and envy. He did not want to see Michelangelo’s influence grow among those close to Pope Julius II. He saw an opportunity when the pope was planning a magnificent tomb for himself. Michelangelo was very excited about the project because it would allow him to create an exceptional collection of sculptures.

But the project ran into problems, and Bramante managed to influence the pope until his attention moved away from the tomb. Michelangelo felt that a project that could have become one of his greatest achievements had been taken away from him. But the matter did not end there.

Bramante then came up with an idea that seemed even more clever.

He persuaded the pope to commission Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

On the surface, the assignment looked like a great honor. But in Bramante’s eyes, it was a double trap. Michelangelo was known mainly as a sculptor, and Bramante believed that painting was not a field in which Michelangelo could match his skill in sculpture. If Michelangelo failed in such a huge project, his reputation as an extraordinary artist would be damaged. And if he accepted it, he would spend many years working on the ceiling instead of creating the sculptures that had made him famous.

The plan therefore seemed perfect: a huge project that would consume Michelangelo’s time and, at the same time, might reveal the limits of his talent before the pope and the public.

Michelangelo understood what was happening.

At first, he was not enthusiastic about the assignment. He saw himself as a sculptor before he saw himself as a painter, and he considered walking away from the project. But refusing the pope’s request was not easy, and stepping back would have given his rivals exactly what they wanted.

Power That Does Not Need to Be Displayed

Visible power can sometimes cause a person’s downfall if it creates fear and envy in others. Cosimo de’ Medici understood this early. He chose to build his influence without showing it openly and to appear to the people of Florence as an ordinary citizen, while in reality he controlled many parts of political life. His story shows how outward modesty can protect power from rivals and jealous people.

Florence became prosperous during the Middle Ages because of a strong class of merchants and craftsmen. They created a republican system to protect themselves from the control of the nobility. To prevent any one person from holding power for too long, political positions changed frequently, and most officials stayed in office for only a few months. This created intense competition for power, but it also made it difficult for one ruler to become a tyrant.

For centuries, the Medici family lived a relatively ordinary life in this society. They worked in trade and banking and did not stand out greatly from other middle-class families. But their situation began to change in the late fourteenth century, when Giovanni de’ Medici made a fortune through banking and laid the foundation for the family’s rise in Florence.

After Giovanni died, his son Cosimo de’ Medici took control of the family business. Cosimo showed great skill in business and finance. The family’s operations expanded quickly, and the Medici Bank became one of the most powerful financial institutions in Europe. As their wealth grew, so did their influence in Florence.

However, the political life of the city was largely controlled by another family, the Albizzi. Although Florence was officially a republic, the Albizzi used their connections and alliances to place their own supporters in many important government positions. In practice, they controlled much of the city’s political life.

Cosimo did not openly challenge them. Instead, he dealt with them carefully and sometimes even supported them behind the scenes. While the Albizzi openly displayed their power and behaved like the leading political family in Florence, Cosimo made sure not to appear as a rival trying to take control from them.

But the wealth and influence of the Medici family continued to grow until they could no longer be ignored. In 1433, the Albizzi began to see Cosimo as a serious threat to their position. They used their influence to put him on trial, accusing him of plotting against the republican government.

Some of his enemies demanded his execution. Others feared that killing him could lead to serious unrest or even civil war because Cosimo had gained many supporters and important connections. In the end, they decided to exile him from Florence.

Cosimo did not create a public conflict or try to resist the decision by force. He quietly left the city because he understood that temporarily stepping away could be wiser than entering a direct confrontation that his enemies could use against him.

But leaving Florence did not mean the end of his influence. He kept his wealth and his wide network of relationships, and from exile he continued to influence events in the city and support his allies.

During the following year, many people in Florence began to feel that the Albizzi were no longer simply protecting their influence. They seemed to be tightening their control over the government in a way that threatened the republic itself. Political tensions increased, and the family gradually lost much of its support.

In September 1434, the power of the Albizzi collapsed, and their leaders were forced to leave Florence. Cosimo then returned to the city, welcomed by his supporters. For the first time, his family had the opportunity to become the most influential force in Florence.

But Cosimo also knew that this moment carried great danger.

If he presented himself as the new ruler and openly displayed his power, as the Albizzi had done before him, he could create fear among the people and envy among rival families. Different groups might then unite against him just as they had united against his enemies. Open political conflict could also threaten his family’s businesses and wealth.

On the other hand, if he completely stayed away from politics, another family might rise to power and later use that power against the Medici because of their growing wealth.

So Cosimo chose a different path: to possess power without appearing to possess it.

In secret, he began using his wealth and connections to build a wide network of allies throughout Florence. He supported people he trusted and helped them reach influential positions in the government. However, he usually chose respected members of the middle class, people who did not appear to the public to be simple tools of the Medici family.

In this way, ordinary citizens did not see a government led by Cosimo. Instead, they saw a number of well-known and respected officials managing the republic. Behind this public image, however, Cosimo’s influence reached many of the most important decisions.

Those who tried to challenge his power or attack his interests could be pressured without an open confrontation. Through his allies in government and finance, financial burdens could be placed on them. Taxes and penalties could be used to weaken them, and pressure could be placed on their businesses and property.

Over time, Florence remained a republic in appearance, while Cosimo exercised great influence over its affairs from behind the scenes.

Yet Cosimo’s public behavior did not make him look like the most powerful man in the city.

He walked through the streets of Florence wearing simple clothes and was often accompanied by only one servant. He treated officials and people in important positions with clear respect and avoided acting as if he were more important than they were.

One example of his modest lifestyle was that he preferred riding a mule instead of appearing on an impressive horse, as many wealthy and powerful men of that time did.

More importantly, he did not present himself as the man making all the major political decisions. In public, he appeared to be simply a wealthy citizen taking care of his business. In reality, however, he deeply influenced the politics and foreign relations of Florence for decades.

He also used his wealth in ways that increased his popularity instead of making people resent him. He gave money to charities, maintained strong relationships with merchants and members of the middle class, and helped finance public buildings and projects that made Florence more beautiful and gave its citizens greater pride in their city.

Even when he decided to build a palace for his family, he was careful not to turn it into an obvious display of wealth.

He was offered a grand and highly decorated design, but he rejected it and chose a simpler plan designed by the architect Michelozzo. The palace reflected Cosimo’s own philosophy: a restrained exterior that did not provoke others, while inside it contained comfort, elegance, and wealth.

Cosimo understood that people could accept the influence of a powerful man as long as he did not constantly make them feel that he was more powerful than they were. For this reason, he was careful not to turn his success into a permanent display of superiority.

He also understood that ideas and projects often face less resistance when the person behind them does not insist on taking all the credit. When Cosimo wanted something to be done, he often preferred to make the idea appear as if it had come from someone else. In this way, he achieved the result he wanted while allowing others to keep a sense of importance and recognition.

Through this strategy, he managed to combine two things that are difficult to combine: enormous political influence and a modest public image.

The man who could influence the appointment of senior officials, weaken his enemies, and guide the politics of the city appeared to the public as a respected wealthy citizen who did not demand an official position and did not boast about his power.

This made it difficult for his enemies to gather public support against him. An obvious enemy is easy to attack, but power that does not openly display itself is much harder to measure or use to turn the public against its owner.

This strategy continued for many years, and the Medici family became the leading power in Florence without Cosimo ever needing to declare himself a king, prince, or absolute ruler.

The story of Cosimo de’ Medici shows that success does not always need to be displayed openly. He had wealth and influence, but he understood that showing too much superiority could turn admiration into fear, and fear into envy and hostility. So he hid much of his power behind simplicity and modesty and allowed others to feel that they also had importance and a role to play.

The lesson of the story is not that a person should hide his abilities or pretend to be weak. Rather, it is to understand that power that constantly needs to display itself may create more enemies than supporters, while confident power does not need to prove itself at every moment.

Not Every Glittering Thing Is Salvation

In the far corners of the world, where the noise of cities does not reach and hurried faces do not crowd the streets, simple people live with no more than what is enough for the day. Yet their hearts may be filled with something the wealthy cannot buy. There, between the sea and the wind, between poverty and contentment, a small story may begin—a story that reveals the depths of the human soul, and the thin line between need and greed, between a dream and an abyss.

Kino was a poor fisherman who lived on a small, quiet island, far from the clamor of cities and their crowded markets. He did not own a spacious house or much money, and he had never known the taste of wealth. Yet he possessed something deeper than money and more lasting than gold: contentment. He lived with his wife, Juana, and their infant son, Coyotito, in a simple hut near the sea, a hut surrounded by the smell of salt, while the sound of the waves tapped against its walls by day and by night.

Kino’s life moved to the rhythm of the sea. He woke with the dawn, carried his net, pushed his small boat into the water, and returned at the end of the day with whatever God had granted him. Sometimes the net came back full of provision, and sometimes it returned almost empty, but he never raised his voice in complaint. He saw every peaceful day as a blessing, every smile from his wife as reassurance, and every glance at his little child as a simple but precious future.

Juana was no less patient than he was. She knew the hardship of life, and she knew that poverty might knock at the door every morning. Yet she was strong-hearted, steady-eyed, and certain that a home does not stand because of the things inside it, but because of the love within it. She waited for Kino every day, not first asking what he had caught, but looking at his face to make sure he had returned safely.

In that little hut, the child, Coyotito, slept in a wooden box hanging from the ceiling, away from the ground and from whatever insects might crawl upon it. The box swayed lightly whenever the air moved, like a small cradle guarding the child’s dreams. Neither Kino nor Juana imagined that a cruel danger could find its way into that peaceful place, or that one single moment could be enough to change the course of their entire lives.

One morning, Kino woke to a familiar stillness. Dawn was slipping shyly into the hut, Juana was sleeping beside him, and the child was sunk in his quiet sleep. For a few moments, Kino listened to the distant sound of the sea. Then he lifted his eyes toward the hanging wooden box, and suddenly his body froze.

He saw a large black scorpion slowly crawling along the rope that held the child’s cradle. It moved cautiously, but the sight of it alone was enough to stop the breath. Kino knew in that instant that any wrong movement could be fatal. If he approached too quickly, the scorpion might sense danger and sting the child. If he delayed even a moment, the disaster might happen on its own.

Kino rose very slowly, his eyes never leaving the scorpion. His heart was pounding violently, but he tried to control his body. Juana, meanwhile, woke with a vague feeling of danger, and as soon as she saw what her husband was seeing, her eyes widened in terror. Still, she remained silent, as though sound itself had become dangerous.

At that moment, the child stirred in his sleep. He stretched his little hand toward the thing swinging above him, as if he saw it as a strange toy glittering in the morning light. Kino tried to rush forward, but fate was faster than his hand. The scorpion dropped suddenly and stung the child’s tiny body.

Coyotito’s scream burst out, sharp and tearing, a cry that split the silence of the hut like an arrow. Kino lunged toward the cradle, seized the scorpion, and crushed it between his fingers, but what had happened had already happened. Juana quickly lifted her child and pressed him to her chest. Then she began to suck the place of the sting with her mouth, trying to draw out the poison before it spread farther through his body.

Her face was rigid, but inside she was fighting an indescribable terror. She looked at Kino with eyes he had never seen before, eyes filled with the fear of a mother who feels that the life in her arms may slip away from her. In a trembling but firm voice, she told him that they had to go to the doctor immediately.

Kino knew the only doctor in the town. He knew his large house and his high gate, and he also knew that the man did not love the poor and did not open his heart to them unless they opened bags of money for him. The doctor was a man of comfort and luxury, living among fine foods and elegant furniture, dreaming of a distant and richer life, as if he saw himself above all the people of that island. Even so, Kino and Juana had no other choice.

Juana carried the child in her arms, and Kino walked beside her with quick, heavy steps. Some of the neighbors followed them after hearing the child’s scream and learning what had happened. Everyone understood that a scorpion sting could be dangerous, and that the child needed urgent help. But they also understood that the doctor’s door was not a door of mercy; it was a door of money and power.

They reached the large house. They stood before the high gate, which seemed to separate two worlds: the world of poverty and fear outside, and the world of luxury and coldness inside. Kino knocked on the door, and the servant appeared with a stiff face and a cold gaze. He did not ask them anything with kindness, but looked at them as one looks at something bothersome.

Kino said, in a voice mixed with fear and pleading, that his son had been stung by a scorpion and needed treatment. The servant looked at the child, then at Kino’s simple clothes, and told them to wait. He closed the door and went inside, where the doctor was sitting before a full breakfast table, eating calmly, as if the world beyond the walls of his house meant nothing to him.

The servant told him that a poor fisherman had come carrying a child stung by a scorpion. The doctor showed no real concern and did not rise from his place. The first thing he asked about was money. Did the fisherman have anything with which to pay? He did not ask the child’s age, nor his condition, nor the place of the sting. In his mind, calculation came before mercy.

The servant returned to the door and asked Kino whether he had anything to pay. Kino hesitated for a moment, then took from his pocket everything he owned: small pearls, dull and flat, hardly seeming valuable. He placed them in the servant’s hand as though he were handing over the last piece of hope he had left.

The servant carried the pearls to the doctor. The doctor turned them between his fingers with contempt, and the expression of arrogance appeared on his face. He asked whether the pearl was large, and whether Kino was keeping it in a safe place. Then he offered to put it in a safe of his own, claiming that people could not be trusted these days. Kino smiled cautiously and said the pearl was safe.

The doctor left, but his presence remained in the hut like a heavy shadow. Kino felt that the man had not come for the child alone, but for the pearl. From that moment on, the home was no longer as safe as it had once been. Kino began to hear sounds at night he had never noticed before, and to see endless possibilities in the darkness.

On a quiet night, Kino awoke to a faint sound. He sensed that someone was moving near the hut. He rose carefully and went out to inspect the place, and suddenly a mysterious shadow rushed at him. The two became locked in a violent struggle. Kino could not see the man’s face, but he felt the strength of his hands and his frantic attempt to reach something. The journey was harsh. Sharp rocks, rough paths, exhausting heat, and fear followed them with every step. They hid at times and moved on at times, listening to every movement around them. Then Kino discovered that men were following their trail. Three trackers were drawing closer little by little, as though the pearl itself were calling them from afar.

Kino hid with Juana and the child among the rocks. He had to act before the trackers reached them. He waited for the right moment, then sprang at one of them. A fierce struggle broke out in the darkness. Kino fought with the savagery of a man who was no longer defending money, but the last thing he had left of his family. Yet the chaos was greater than anything he could control.

A gunshot rang through the mountains, and then Juana’s scream tore through the silence. It was unlike any sound Kino had ever heard in his life. He left what was in his hand and rushed toward her. Not every blessing that glitters before the eye is good, and not every opportunity that appears great is a path to happiness. A person may possess little and yet be rich in peace, then chase after more and lose his peace and those he loves. And so Kino’s story leaves us with a harsh and clear lesson: what we already possess in love, safety, and contentment may be more precious than all the pearls of the sea.

But as it came close, something unexpected happened.

The lion suddenly recognized Androcles—his friend, his savior.

Instead of attacking, the lion gently approached him, wagging its tail, and began to lick his hands affectionately, just like a loyal dog.

It was a long, sweltering summer day. The sun burned high in a cloudless sky, casting its relentless light over fields, trees, and dusty forest paths. The ground lay dry and cracked, and the air itself seemed heavy with exhaustion. Even the leaves hung still upon their branches, as though wearied by the heat. The birds had fallen silent. The forest, wrapped in stillness, seemed to wait for the mercy of evening.

Along one of those dusty paths walked a fox.

The First World War ended in 1918, but it did not leave behind true peace. Instead, it left a wounded continent, collapsed economies, and millions of broken lives. From the heart of this devastation, the seeds of another catastrophe began to grow. The treaties signed to end the war, especially the Treaty of Versailles, were not seen by many Germans as a peace agreement. To them, it was a sentence of humiliation and revenge.

In this heavy atmosphere, a man appeared who would change the course of history. He was a man who swore to erase the effects of defeat and rebuild the German empire, no matter the cost. His name was Adolf Hitler. Rebellion Against Life

Gilgamesh, the ruler of Uruk, was a tyrant upon the earth, rejoicing in his towering, giant stature, his immense body, and the dazzling beauty that captivated all who saw him. Two-thirds of him was divine, while the other third was human. He was a descendant of Shamash-Nishtin, the sole immortal creature who had survived the flood. No one resembled him in appearance, in his knowledge of the secrets of the unseen, and in his vision that saw all things, even those hidden in the farthest corners of the unknown world.

In his heart was a thirsty longing for love. Because of his endless adventures to quench this constant thirst, fathers and husbands complained daily to the goddess of love and beauty, Ishtar, of Gilgamesh’s attempts to harass their wives and maidens, begging her for protection for themselves and for their daughters and wives.

Ishtar heard the desperate pleas of the people and went to the goddess Aruru, the godmother of Gilgamesh, imploring her to create another son equal in power and might to Gilgamesh, who could occupy him in a prolonged struggle, allowing the minds of husbands and fathers across Uruk to find rest.

Aruru accepted Ishtar’s plea and kneaded pieces of clay, breathing life into them, and thus shaped Enkidu.

He came forth a man with the strength of a boar, the mane of a lion, and the ferocity of a bird, his body covered in thick hair and his shoulders draped with long hair like that of a woman, golden as the hair of the god of grain.

Since his creation, Enkidu cared nothing for the company of men. Instead, he isolated himself, keeping away from them. He lived with the wild animals, grazing grass with the gazelles, playing with the creatures of the sea, and quenching his thirst with the beasts of the fields.

One day, a hunter named Tesaidu tried to capture him with nets, but he failed. The hunter tried again on another day, but Enkidu was always skilled in escaping him. Anger filled the hunter’s heart, and he rushed to Gilgamesh to explain, saying: Enkidu has never fallen into any net, but there is another net that can capture him, and that is the net of women.

Gilgamesh replied:
“What is it you want from me? The woman or the net?”

The hunter answered:
“Enkidu claims he is stronger than you, and I want to bring him here before you so you may prove to him that his strength is weakness itself compared to yours. Thus, I beg you to lend me a beautiful priestess who can entangle Enkidu in the snare of her love and lead him to you.”

Gilgamesh said:
“Then go, hunter, and take with you the priestess Akhuta. When the beasts come with Enkidu to the water source to drink, have her reveal her face and legs. You hide yourself, and everything else you wish for will follow.”

The hunter and the priestess Akhuta went to where Enkidu came to drink with the beasts.

When the human-like beast approached, the sweet priestess stretched out her hand and began removing her veils one after another, then stood before him naked, her body trembling with thirst.

Enkidu turned his head toward the beautiful woman and paused. He began stealing glances at her with longing and desire, and a flame of fire ignited within him.

From his hiding place, the hunter urged the priestess Akhuta to approach Enkidu and give him all that would make him forget himself, his friends, and his wilderness.

Enkidu remained with the priestess for six days and seven nights, drinking deeply of happiness. When boredom overtook him and he regained his senses, he looked around and found all the wild animals and friends of his had dispersed and left him. Sorrow filled Enkidu’s heart, but the priestess shook him, saying:

“You, who have attained the greatness of the gods, how can you delight in living among the beasts and their kind? Come with me to the kingdom of Uruk where Gilgamesh lives, unmatched in might. Come, let me lead you to the magnificent palace where the god Anu and the goddess Ishtar reside, granting you the secrets of strength and vigor.”

Enkidu found the offer enticing and began yearning to meet Gilgamesh, announcing his agreement to follow the woman to the city of Uruk, saying:

“Let us go so I may see the place where Gilgamesh lives. I will fight him, defeat him, and show him my power and vigor.”

The three set off toward Uruk: Akhuta, Enkidu, and the hunter.

At that time, Uruk was celebrating the festival of Ishtar, and the people were feasting, drinking, and rejoicing when the news of Enkidu’s arrival, the rival of Gilgamesh, reached them.

The people danced more joyfully, and the gods rejoiced, for they were pleased that Gilgamesh, the abductor of wives and maidens, might be defeated and dethroned from the seat he had defiled.

Indeed, Enkidu possessed the strength to defeat Gilgamesh, but something else had happened. Ishtar had seen Gilgamesh and admired him, deciding to prevent the brutal conflict that was to occur. She appeared to Enkidu in a dream, whispering in his ear that Gilgamesh was stronger than he and that it would be wise to avoid the conflict.

The same happened with Gilgamesh. It seemed to him as if his mother appeared in a dream, warning him against fighting Enkidu and urging him to become friends with him.

And so it was. Those who were meant to be enemies met and became loyal friends. They walked daily side by side, protecting Uruk from the attacks of Elam, returning victorious after performing the greatest of deeds.

Yet Enkidu could not endure city life for long. He began to grow weary of it, yearning to return to the forest where he once lived. In a dream, the spirit of Shamash-Nishtin appeared to him, enticing him to remain on earth and guiding him toward the rewards of living within it. Shamash-Nishtin said:

“Gilgamesh is your friend and your brother. He will grant you a grand bed to sleep on and a throne-like seat at his left side, and he will make all the kings of the earth kneel beneath your feet in admiration and respect.”

Temptation swayed Enkidu, and he agreed to remain alongside Gilgamesh, no longer lamenting his stay in the kingdom of Uruk.

Gilgamesh himself was pleased by Enkidu’s presence, declaring that peace had come, removing his armor of war, donning sacred white robes, adorning himself with the royal insignia, and wearing the crown.

At that moment, Ishtar appeared, astonished by his beauty and might, gazing upon him with her enchanting eyes, saying:

“Come, Gilgamesh, and be my husband. Let us share the cups of love and passion. I will place you in a chariot of lapis lazuli and gold, inlaid with agate, drawn by seven lions. You will enter our house with incense rising around you from cedarwood. Come, I will grant you dominion, and your feet will embrace all lands bordering the sea, and I will make the heads of kings bow before you, bringing you the fruits of the mountains and plains as tribute.”

But Gilgamesh knew Ishtar well, aware of her violent, terrifying tales. He shook his head, saying:

“You are a betrayer, Ishtar. My head will not rest upon my shoulders if I place faith in your love and surrender to your arts of passion.”

Ishtar replied:
“And what do you know of my betrayals, young man?”

Gilgamesh answered:
“Everyone here speaks of what your treacherous love has done to all who have fallen into your snare. You loved the eagle and then clipped its wings, and you adored the horse until it perished, and you poured cups of love for the lion until it lost its mane.”

Ishtar interrupted:
“But have you heard of my sacrifices for those I loved? Have you heard my story with my beloved Tammuz?”

Gilgamesh shrugged his shoulders, and the goddess of love and beauty began to tell him her tale:

Tammuz was a shepherd youth, full of vigor, descended from the great god Ea. Ishtar, the goddess of love and beauty, saw him tending his flock beneath the sacred “Arbad” tree that spread its shade over the earth, and she fell deeply in love with him, choosing him as her husband while she was still in the bloom of youth.

The two lovers lived for a long time in a tender, beautiful love story that the heavens had never witnessed before, until one day Tammuz went out to graze his flock, and a wild boar attacked him, striking him with a fatal blow. Tammuz fell as the dead fall, descending to “Aralu,” the dark underworld.

Ishtar’s sister, Ereshkigal, ruled the vast kingdom of Aralu deep within the earth. She was jealous of her sister and filled with envy. No sooner had the youth descended into her realm than she sealed the gates and swore that he would never return to the earth alive.

Yet Ishtar decided to descend to Aralu in a desperate attempt to reclaim her beloved husband.

Ishtar embarked on a long, harsh journey, during which she passed through terrifying dangers until she reached the gates of Aralu, seeking permission to enter.

Ereshkigal ordered the keeper of the gates never to open them to her sister.

Ishtar screamed in anger, pounding on the gates of Aralu, threatening and vowing to destroy them and crush their locks and bars if she were not allowed entry.

The gatekeeper was filled with terror and panic, rushing to Ereshkigal, begging her to save him by allowing her sister to enter.

Despite the bitterness and hatred Ereshkigal held for her sister, she had to conceal these feelings before the terrified gatekeeper and permitted him to open the gates. Yet when she gave this permission, she stated that it did not prevent her from treating her sister according to the divine law that prohibited entry into Aralu except for the naked.

The gatekeeper allowed Ishtar to enter, stripping her of a part of her garments and jewelry at each of the seven gates she passed through on her way into the kingdom of darkness.

Ishtar did not protest, for her only concern was to reach the place where Tammuz was, nothing more.

At the first gate, the gatekeeper removed her crown, at the second, her earrings, then her necklace, then her breast ornaments, then her sacred jeweled belt, and then her embroidered, glittering robe that covered her arms and legs.

Despite all this, the gatekeeper was not satisfied, demanding that before she could pass through the final gate, she must remove her last garment. At first, Ishtar resisted gently, but then she yielded and surrendered.

Ishtar descended naked into the depths of Aralu.

Ereshkigal opened her eyes in wrath and hatred, for her sister was enchanting, stunning in her beauty, while she herself was ugly, deformed, and lame. She felt it was her right to pour out her anger and vengeance upon her sister.

Ereshkigal commanded her messenger Namtar:
“Go, Namtar, and imprison her in my palace. Inflict upon her sixty diseases: disease of the eyes upon her eyes, disease of the side upon her side, disease of the feet upon her feet, disease of the heart upon her heart, and disease of the head upon her head. Afflict every part of her detestable body with every disease you know.”

Namtar executed his mistress’s command.

Ishtar found herself within her sister’s prison, her body plagued by vicious diseases.

The earth looked around and found no trace of Ishtar, the goddess of love, beauty, and spring. It felt it had lost all that her presence inspired, and all arts and ways of love were forgotten. Animals no longer felt the heat of desire, and even the inhabitants of the earth, men and women, became separated from one another, and no new generation could be born.

Humanity began to dwindle, and the gods were terrified when they saw the decline in offerings sent to them by humans. Panic seized them when they witnessed many people abandoning their worship since Ishtar had vanished behind the prison bars.

The sun god was the saddest of all the heavenly gods for the people of earth, and he went to the earth god Ea, weeping, carrying to him the tale of ruin and destruction that had befallen all creatures, as he witnessed daily between sunrise and sunset.

Ea grieved over the calamities that had struck his earth and created a messenger named Ashushunampar, who went carrying his message to Aralu, requesting Ereshkigal in the name of all the gods to release Ishtar.

Ereshkigal raged when the sacred command in the name of the gods reached her through Ashushunampar, cursing and reviling him, then ordering that he be thrown into a dark pit in the depths of Aralu to die.

Yet Ereshkigal could not withstand the collective will of all the gods. Before long, she commanded her messenger Namtar to release her sister, the goddess Ishtar.

Namtar ascended with his mistress’s command, but to his surprise, Ishtar refused to leave the prison, swearing she would not depart or return to earth unless she was allowed to take her husband Tammuz with her.

Ereshkigal refused, and the earth remained barren, weeping.

The gods became angry and sent another command to Ereshkigal, ordering the release of Tammuz in response to Ishtar’s plea. Despite herself, the mistress of the underworld sent her messenger Namtar to pour the water of life upon Tammuz’s body and release him from the walls of Aralu, along with Ishtar.

Thus, Ishtar, victorious, passed back through the seven gates of Aralu with her husband, receiving at each gate what she had previously removed: her lower garments, her belt, her breast ornaments, her earrings, and her crown.

The earth looked and saw Ishtar and Tammuz returning. Plants began to grow again, animals multiplied, and people once more sought to increase their offspring. Ishtar again sat upon the throne of love, beauty, and spring.

Gilgamesh listened in astonishment to the story of Ishtar and Tammuz. But when she finished, he shook his shoulders, recalling the harsh end that befell Tammuz himself, having heard that Tammuz lost a part of his senses each day until madness overtook him and he died.

Gilgamesh swore he would never surrender to Ishtar’s love, saying as he walked away:
“You love me now, but you will destroy me as you have destroyed all those before me.”

Ishtar screamed, striking the earth and rushing toward the heavens. In her furious anger, she went to Anu, the greatest of the gods, demanding that he create a monstrous bull from the beasts to kill Gilgamesh. But Anu refused her request, saying:
“Do you not feel shame, Ishtar, now that Gilgamesh has reminded you of all your disgraces, scandals, and treacheries?”

Ishtar continued to scream, threatening to disable all love and reproductive instincts in the universe until everything perished.

The memory of the earth’s previous devastation was still vivid in Anu’s mind, forcing him to submit to Ishtar’s will, and he sent a mighty bull named Alu to challenge Gilgamesh.

Alu and Gilgamesh met.

In the fierce battle that erupted between them, Gilgamesh was nearly slain, but his friend Enkidu rushed to save him from the claws of the savage bull, and together they killed it.

Ishtar looked down in mad fury, seeing the bull dying and Gilgamesh standing over its body, striking all its limbs with his spear. Ishtar shouted:
“Cursed are you, Gilgamesh! You have angered me, I who do not anger, you who have killed the bull I sent from the heavens!”

Enkidu heard Ishtar’s curses, leapt upon the beast, tore off one of its limbs, and threw it into the face of the goddess of love and beauty, shouting:
“Shut your mouth, you deceiver, or I will attack and destroy you as we destroyed your messenger!”

Shame filled Ishtar’s mind, and she swore revenge.

Within days, Enkidu fell in the prime of his glory, struck by a fatal disease that laid him low for twelve miserable days.

It was Ishtar who had sent him the disease of death.

Sorrow filled Gilgamesh’s heart, and the image of death appeared to him as hideous and terrifying. He began to contemplate a way to escape the inevitable fate.

His thoughts led him to a single dear person, untouched by death—his great-grandfather, Shamash-Nishtin, the immortal who knew the secret of eternal life.

Gilgamesh decided to set out in search of the place where Shamash-Nishtin resided, even if his quest required him to circle the entire earth.

He departed on his journey toward the ends of the earth, where the sun sets. After traveling for days across mountains and plains, he reached a great mountain guarded by animals and beasts that would not allow him passage until the god Sin, lord of the moon, cast sleep upon them, allowing Gilgamesh to pass. He crossed the terrifying mountain to find himself before another, even more fearsome and towering, the Mountain of Sunset, where the western horizon ends between the earth and the underworld.

Two mighty guardians stood watch at its gate, their heads touching the dome of the sky, their chests reaching the depths of the earth.

Gilgamesh approached them, his face reflecting all shades of fear and dread. The guardians stopped him, asking what he wanted by approaching the entrance to the underworld. Gilgamesh answered that he wished to reach his great-grandfather, Shamash-Nishtin.

The guardians advised him to return, knowing that the secret of immortality was beyond the reach of any human being. But Gilgamesh pleaded with them, weeping, and their hearts softened, allowing him to pass.

Gilgamesh traveled twelve miles inside a tunnel shrouded in darkness. When he reached its end, light began to appear, and he found himself standing before the shore of a vast sea upon whose waters rose the throne of the virgin goddess Sibtu, mistress of the seas.

He called out to her, asking her to help him cross the waters, but the goddess of the sea refused. Gilgamesh wept, threatened, and swore that if he could not reach Shamash-Nishtin, he would cast himself from the mountain’s peak to die. Sibtu pitied him and allowed him to cross the sea in a boat steered by one of her loyal servants.

Gilgamesh began a long and terrifying journey that lasted forty days and nights, until he finally found himself standing before a small island where Shamash-Nishtin, the eternally immortal, resided.

Shamash-Nishtin was astonished when he saw Gilgamesh approaching the island, for by then, the hero had fallen in the boat, afflicted by a severe disease. From his bed, Gilgamesh pleaded with his great-grandfather to grant him the secret of immortality for which he had faced so many dangers and terrors.

Shamash-Nishtin shook his head and said to him:
“Death is the end of every human. It is forbidden for any man to know the moment when his life will end. In the heavens sit the goddesses of fate, spinning the threads of life for every human and determining his end. But when will the spinning for his life cease, and at what hour? This is something no one knows, not even the spinners themselves.”

Gilgamesh replied:
“I do not seek to transgress the gods’ authority, but I wonder why you are immortal while I must die, even though my appearance is no different from yours. I resemble you exactly. You are not wiser nor more prudent than I, and I have a heart as bold and strong as yours. How is it that you enter the assembly of the gods, while I cannot? How do you find the secret of immortality while I cannot?”

Shamash-Nishtin could only attempt to convince him by telling him the story of creation, the flood, and immortality.

When Shamash finished his tale, Gilgamesh fell into deep despair and exhaustion within the depths of his boat.

Shamash-Nishtin was moved with compassion for his grandson, promising to restore his health and cure him.

Gilgamesh slept for six days and seven nights, and during his deep sleep, Shamash-Nishtin’s wife was filled with tenderness and mercy toward him, eventually asking her husband to return him safely to his daughter.

Shamash-Nishtin heeded his wife’s plea, asking her to bring him a magical substance containing seven sacred elements, which he placed between the sleeping Gilgamesh’s lips in the depths of the boat.

Six days passed, and on the seventh day, when Gilgamesh awoke, he again asked his great-grandfather for the secret of immortality.

Shamash permitted him to descend to the shore, sending him to a sacred spring to wash away the impurities of his past life. Gilgamesh cleansed himself in the sacred waters, then returned to his great-grandfather, confident that he would now receive the secret of immortality.

And so it was. Shamash-Nishtin took the hero by the hand and led him to where he could find the plant of immortality.

This sacred plant, which restores youth and grants eternal life to whoever eats it, was a type of creeping grass, its thorns sharp enough to draw blood from anyone who tried to gather it.

Gilgamesh obtained the plant and asked his great-grandfather’s permission to return to Uruk.

Thus began his journey home, in the sacred boat steered by Sibtu’s loyal helmsman, protecting him throughout the journey.

Gilgamesh traveled the first part of the journey, which took thirty segments, until he reached a place where there was a small island with a well at its center. The helmsman told him it contained sweet water, inviting him to bathe.

Gilgamesh removed his clothes and descended into the well to bathe...

Unbeknownst to Gilgamesh, a mottled serpent lay near where he had placed his clothes, catching the scent of the sacred plant. It crept forward, seized it in an instant, and disappeared.

Gilgamesh screamed as he saw the plant of immortality lost, and he wept like a child, tears streaming down his cheeks, but there was nothing he could do.

Gilgamesh resumed his journey, sorrowful, back toward the earth. Upon reaching Uruk, he roamed around its temples, praying to the gods to return Enkidu to life, even if only for a moment so that he might speak with him once more.

Despite the offerings he made to the gods Sin and Marduk, none of them answered him.

Finally, Gilgamesh went to the god Ea, who pitied him and commanded his messenger Nergal to bring him the spirit of his beloved Enkidu.

A fissure opened in the earth, and from it, the spirit of Enkidu emerged like a breath of perfume. Gilgamesh spoke to his friend:
“Tell me, my friend, what you have seen. I can no longer remain immortal upon the earth, and sooner or later, I will join you. What do you see there so that I may prepare myself?”

Enkidu replied:
“I cannot reveal the secrets of the underworld.”

Gilgamesh wept, insisting that his friend sit with him and speak. The spirit of Enkidu’s heart softened toward him, and he began to tell him the tale of the horrors of Aralu, describing how matters proceed in the underworld.

Enkidu recounted how the martyr who dies in battle sleeps upon a bed, drinks pure water, and is surrounded by his mother, father, children, and wife. But the man who dies with his corpse abandoned in the fields without burial rites must feed upon the refuse and filth discarded by others.

Enkidu concluded:
“I died a martyr, so I am blessed in the underworld. Now, the choice is yours.”

At that moment, the earth split open beneath Enkidu, and he vanished. As for Gilgamesh, he gazed around him in astonishment, then fell to the ground, his heart filled with confusion between the desire for death and the desire for life.

Discovering Your True Strength

Sometimes, we go through life unaware of the power that lies within us. We act according to what others say we are, not realizing who we truly are deep inside. This story is a simple yet powerful reminder that our identity isn't always shaped by where we grow up or who we’re surrounded by—but by what’s already inside us.

One day, a lioness passed away while giving birth to a cub. The newborn lion was left alone until a flock of sheep wandered by. The little cub, unaware of his identity, followed them. The sheep didn’t question it; they accepted him and raised him as one of their own.

The lion cub grew up among the sheep. He ate grass, walked like them, and lived just as they did. He had never seen another lion, so he truly believed he was a sheep. He was happy, never questioning his life.

As time passed, the cub became a young lion. He grew taller, stronger, and larger than the sheep—but he didn’t notice. In his heart, he still thought he was just like them. Even though his body was changing, he still felt small and weak inside.

Then one day, everything changed. While the sheep were grazing peacefully, a large lion emerged from the forest. His roar broke the silence, and the sheep scattered in fear. The young lion, still thinking he was a sheep, also ran away in panic.

The big lion watched in confusion. A lion running with sheep? That made no sense. He quickly chased the young lion and caught up with him. Shaking with fear, the young lion pleaded, “Please don’t hurt me. I’m just a poor sheep.”

The big lion laughed gently. “You’re not a sheep,” he said. “You’re a lion, just like me.”

The young lion didn’t believe him. “No, I’m not. I live with the sheep. I eat grass. I am one of them.”

“Come with me,” the big lion said kindly. “Let me show you the truth.”

He led the young lion to a nearby lake. The water was calm and clear, like a mirror. “Look,” the big lion said, “look at your reflection, then look at mine.”

Nervously, the young lion looked into the water. What he saw left him speechless. He didn’t see a sheep—he saw a powerful creature just like the one beside him.

“I look like you,” he whispered.

“That’s because you are like me,” the big lion said with a smile. “You’ve always been a lion. You just didn’t know it.”

The young lion was amazed. “But I’ve always lived with sheep… I ate grass, I followed them.”

“You only believed you were a sheep,” the big lion replied. “But now you’ve seen the truth.”

At that moment, something changed. The young lion felt something stir deep inside—a strength he had never known before. With a deep breath, he opened his mouth and let out a powerful roar. It echoed through the forest. The sheep ran in fear.

The young lion stared in awe. “That was me…”

“Yes,” said the big lion. “You are not weak. You are strong. You are a lion.”

From that day forward, the young lion lived as he was born to—strong, free, and fearless. He no longer followed the sheep. He roamed the forest with confidence, hunted for himself, and never looked back. He had found his true self and discovered the strength that was inside him all along.

This story teaches us that we are often more powerful than we believe. Sometimes we just need someone to help us see what’s already within us. Don’t let the world define your worth. Your strength, your courage, and your true potential are already inside you—waiting to be discovered. When you find it, you’ll no longer fear what lies ahead. You’ll rise like a lion… and the world will hear your roar.
