Crossfit!!!!!

I will be chronicling my gym or "box" experiences as best I can. Hopefully my stories will find other older Crossfitters or those thinking of trying Crossfit. Most of all I hope to convince whoever is reading this blog that YOU TOO CAN DO IT! Anybody can!
Without a doubt, Crossfit offers the most satisfying and fulfilling workout I have ever done.

From REEBOK: Training for the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games Open

"3, 2, 1...Before you know it, the CrossFit Games season will be here,
and it all starts with the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games Open beginning on
February 25. Whether you're trying to get your first double under or
place higher than last year, the Open is an opportunity to improve your
fitness and challenge yourself. Here are a few tips to get you started
for a better 2016."

1. Attack Your Weaknesses

2. Listen to Your Coach

3. Practice Past Open Workouts

4. Amp Up Your Intensity

5. Dial In Your Nutrition

"16.1 will be announced on February 25. With the right planning,
training, and nutrition, you'll be ready to give your best performance
in one of the biggest worldwide displays of fitness. But maybe the
biggest factor is our mindset. Murphy says not to get carried away with
what everyone else is doing and to do your best as an athlete. "Don't
forget to have fun and remember we're all just trying to get more fit."
An interesting article that explains how scaling an OPEN workout may or may not

affect your place in the final standings.

"Can I qualify for Regionals or the Masters Qualifier if I Scale workouts?
By the rules – Yes. If you have sufficient points to be in the
overall Top-200 for your Masters Age Group (worldwide), or you have
sufficient points to be in the Top-20 of your region as an Individual,
then you can advance to the next level. HQ made that clear last week. If
you Scale workouts you are eligible to advance to the next round.
Let’s be honest though.........................."
Yesterday the headlines screamed that eating bacon and other processed meats could and would cause cancer if you ate them. As a matter of fact the headlines seemed to classify bacon as having the same threat as smoking a cigarette.

The following article will explain how the news agencies came to shout out the disturbing headlines and why it isn't really true. In a nutshell:

"The scientific evidence linking both processed meat and tobacco to certain types of cancer is strong. In that sense, both are carcinogens. But smoking increases your relative risk of lung cancer by 2,500 percent; eating two slices of bacon a day increases your relative risk for colorectal cancer by 18 percent. Given the frequency of colorectal cancer, that means your risk of getting colorectal cancer over your life goes from about 5 percent to 6 percent and, well, YBMMV. (Your bacon mileage may vary.) “If this is the level of risk you’re running your life on, then you don’t really have much to worry about,” says Alfred Neugut, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at Columbia."

Just saw this post on Facebook. Great perspective and so very true. It has taken me 5 years to get to this realization, that there are some things that I just might not ever be able to do. And it's ok because I'm still not sitting on my couch watching the world go by. I am getting fitter, warding off old age, and spending time with some of the best friends I have had in a long time. They are (for the most part) a kind, like minded, non-judgmental. helpful, healthy group of people.

So, read this post and cut yourself some slack!!

NEVER

I’m five years into my crossfit
journey, and I continue to learn. Even though I’m a lot better than I
was when I started, I still am astonished at how much growth still
happens on a regular basis.
If you had told me five years ago how
much I’d be able to do in 2015, my mind would have been blown. I had
been a bookish, non-athletic, somewhat pudgy kid, and though I was able
to run (slowly) long distances as an adult, I never really developed any
meaningful strength or athleticism. At 44, I’m stronger, faster,
tougher and more skilled than I ever dreamed could be possible.
But
on the other hand, when I compare myself to other people in crossfit,
many of whom have been doing it for shorter periods of time, and who
don’t spend nearly as much time and effort trying to improve, I can see
that I’m well behind many of them.
When I hear about my girl P
walking a yoke with 500#, when I go to competitions and see people do
things that are downright extraordinary, I realize that as far as I have
come, there are some people who are doing things that I will never do.
I
have often struggled with the injustice of it all. People who didn’t
care as much, who didn’t work as hard, still were cruising right past
me. I’d get jealous, mad, and sad, but it didn’t change a darned thing.

So
now, after all this time, I’m finally figuring out something that was
tormenting me before. There are some goals that just aren’t going to
happen. Really. Never going to happen. And I don’t mean that to
denigrate my accomplishments. It’s just the truth. No amount of
training or hard work or protein shakes (or HGH or steroids, or anything
else I can come up with) will make up for my genetics, natural body
type, lack of athletic history or age.
Never’s a hard word to take
in. Both in crossfit and in my outside life, I sometimes fight the
reality. I look at how I am, and then how other people have what I
want, and I chafe. I feel bad about myself or angry/jealous at them,
but why? There are some things in this world that we might want, but
will never have. I have some sort of idea that if I can’t have exactly
what I want,or if someone has something that’s better than mine, then
it’s no good. Why is that person’s hair nicer than mine (house more
organized? seem happier? have a more active social life? etc.) Their
life must be amazing. Why do I not get to have what they do? I have a
similar fantasy in crossfit-if only I could deadlift 300, (get that
darned muscle up, row faster, etc.) I know I’d be happier. But without
those things, I just bang my head against a wall.
But that’s
beginning to change. I’m realizing that never is not necessarily a bad
word, We’re not always going to get every single thing we want. I can
keep fighting the reality, or I can just enjoy my own personal efforts
and growth. I can enjoy the goodness in the life I do have. I can
show up, do work, keep getting a little better, or I can fight it and
complain and drive myself into the ground. The choice is obvious.
Embrace the things I will never do–don’t take it personally, and
embrace the things I can do, the things I might do someday. Enjoy what
is.
Being an elite athlete looks like fun, I can’t lie. But I’m
guessing that it comes with its own challenges and stressors. Being a
community participant, with almost zero pressure on my performance has
its own blessings. My crossfit goal is not to be the best, or lift the
most, or for people to stand around and whisper at my mind bending
skills. If that’s my goal, it’s a poor match with reality.
My true
goal is to have fun. It’s to be fit with my friends. It’s to challenge
myself and continue to grow. It’s to encourage others and myself, together, to be the best we can be, whatever that is.

I have read a lot about Turmeric and it's healing benefits, especially in regards to Crossfit injuries.

There are some athletes at Crossfit New England that swear by it's healing properties!

Below is a summery of the article:

1. Relieves Joint Pain

2. Protects the Brain

You can prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with turmeric.

3. Supports Cardiovascular Health

Curcumin reduces cholesterol and triglycerides.

4. Balances Blood Sugar

Turmeric moderates insulin.

5. Spurs Weight Loss

6. Improves Digestion

Curcumin prompts the gallbladder to release bile and break down fat.

7.Treats Depression

8. Reduces Blood Pressure

9. Boosts Immunity

10.Combats Cancer

"BIOAVAILABILITY

Of note is that curcumin is not readily
absorbed. However, black pepper boosts assimilation by 2,000 percent. So
pair your turmeric with 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. You can further
increase effectiveness by adding 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Since curcumin
dissolves in fat, the oil quickly ferries the compound into the
bloodstream.

If you choose to take a supplement, look
for one that’s standardized to 95 percent curcuminoids and also
contains piperine or black pepper extract."

"Just like many of you, we couldn’t wait to do a Reebok Nano 5.0
review and try them on ourselves. They definitely did not disappoint as a
crossfit shoe. The first thing we noticed when unboxing them was that
in our opinion they looked better than the Reebok Nano 4.0’s. After
picking them up they immediately felt lighter. Comparing to Reebok's last
version, these are actually a little lighter at 9.7 ounces. Next, we
noticed they said the word Kevlar on them, referring to the high quality
military-grade lightweight material used for armor among other things.
In reviewing, we felt the outside visual look was very similar to the
Crossfit Nanos of last year.
The comfort and feel was next up for review. As soon as we
started to slip them on we noticed the new tongue, and we loved it. The
last version has a very thick tongue and the Reebok Nano 5.0 has a
lightweight thinner tongue. We also noticed the top of the shoe was
softer. Reebok replaced the heavy thick material that was on the top of
the Nano 4’s with a light material that is reinforced with the Kevlar
mentioned earlier. The reason they designed the shoe this way is so that
you don’t rip up your shoes during rope climbs. It is really nice to
see innovation here, because we were not fans of the thick upper before.
In our opinion these changes are where the shoe really shines.
Lastly, we had to get some good crossfit workouts in for a
proper review. On the warmup jog we came to the conclusion that the Nano
5.0’s are more comfortable for running than the 4.0’s. Where they
really shine over the 4’s is in crossfit wods that include exercises
where you flex your foot, such as pushups, burpees, and lunges, for
example. That’s because of the new material they used on the top of the
shoe. The thick rope climb protection didn’t flex and dug into your
foot. That problem is completely gone. The bottom of the Nano 5.0’s
seems flatter than the 4.0’s as well, which should payoff in your
Olympic lifts. Overall, many improvements were made in these shoes. As
our Reebok Nano 5.0 review implies, and as can be attested by many top
athletes in the sport, Reebok continues to stay on top of the game."

A couple more REVIEWS:

http://www.grindersgearreview.com/reebok-crossfit-nano-5-0-exclusive-review-and-release-date/
"What do I think? Structurally this shoe marries together the
elements of the new Reebok CrossFit Compete 614 (Rich Froning’s designed
signature shoe) with my favorite all-time CrossFit shoe, the Nano 2.0............"

http://www.holabirdsports.com/blog/reebok-crossfit-nano-5-0-review/
" The structure of the shoe combines attributes from previous models by
Reebok such as the Nano 2.0 and the Reebok CrossFit Compete 6:14. The
Nano 5.0 takes the more streamlined look of the Crossfit Compete with
the Kevlar upper yet it also has the stripped-down style of the Nano 2.0
upper"

http://rizknows.com/post/121442481182/review-reebok-crossfit-nano-5-0
".... you should be very happy with the 5.0s. I am. And I would prefer using them over every CrossFit shoe I own....."

I want to be totally clear here. I don't do box jumps or said better, I am afraid of box jumps. With my surgically replaced knee I am terrified of missing the box and smashing my knee on the edge. As a result of this fear I have always just stepped up on to the box. Until reading this article I was totally satisfied with this substitution. Why did I need to jump up? Other than the obvious decrease in cardio stimulation, what was the difference?

Well, now I have an answer I can wrap my head around. From the article:

"Working out in the gym is the full extent of my sport. So why would I
want to develop explosive hips? Answer: Squats, Snatches, and Cleans,
just to name a few.

Since I shifted my focus from CrossFit to Olympic Weightlifting, it
is apparent that my “hips don’t lie”! They are slow and I struggle to
come out of the hole under a loaded bar. I need to develop
explosiveness, so perhaps I need to include more box jumping into my
weekly regimen..."

So, what am I going to do? Sometimes I will step up but I am also going to stack up some plates and jump up safely. I struggle with coming up after a squat, I tend to get a bit "stuck". If this can help I am all for it.

8 Little Known Sunscreen Facts!

1. There’s no proof that sunscreens prevent most skin cancer.

2. Don’t be fooled by high SPF

3. The common sunscreen additive vitamin A may speed development of skin cancer.

4. European sunscreens provide better UVA protection.

5. Sunscreen doesn’t protect skin from all types of sun damage.

6. Some sunscreen ingredients disrupt hormones and cause skin allergies.

7. Mineral sunscreens contain nano-particles.

8. If you avoid sun, check your vitamin D levels.

READ THE FULL REPORT HERE

This is a great little article reminding us why we call ourselves "crossfitters" and why everybody who walks in to a Box and gives it their all can call themselves a legitimate crossfitter!

"Being a CrossFitter means that you’re willing to put in your best
effort. It means you are willing to accept a new task. It means you are
willing to try something you’ve never done before. It means you are
willing to dig deep and push through the pain even when you want to
quit. It means that you show up to the box every day willing to give the
best of yourself."

Where does your end up???
Some of the key findings:

PROTEIN | LABEL ACCURACY:

The average variance for protein content was 5.6%. The average variance for sodium content was 91.7%.

PROTEIN | PRODUCT PURITY:

All fifty protein powders tested in this batch passed heavy metals screens for arsenic,
lead, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, and silver (below 1 part per million).

PROTEIN | NUTRITIONAL VALUE:

RTD (Ready-To-Drink) products ranked significantly worse than their powdered
forms, due to increased fat, sodium, and preservative content.

Paleo

From "Eat to Perform" :"Five Things Beginners Need to Know About Getting Lean"

Great article , simply stated. If you are just starting to try to LEAN out, read this article. Start out doing it the correct way!!

A Summary:

" You don’t need to create a huge deficit to mobilize fat; your training will keep you lean. Stress is good, but the stress of dieting compounded with the stress of training intensely day in/day out will probably be too much and will likely have a negative impact on your body composition. You’ve got to eat to perform and let your body do what it needs to do!

Most diets work, but the wrong diet for the wrong person can be a disaster. A diet should ideally become a lifestyle that you can adhere to long-term. There is no magic macronutrient ratio ala The Zone Diet.

Energy-dense foods are the way to go if you’re an athlete. Sedentary people may benefit from the standard “eat fewer carbs” Paleo diet but active people will tend to underfeed if they avoid starches and fatty meat.

“Eat less/do less” low carb/low Calorie diets can help you lose weight quickly, but most of it’s water. It can be hard to tell how much fat mass you’re losing vs. how much water you’re expelling on a low carb diet, and it definitely has an impact on performance due to chronic glycogen depletion.

You need a significant amount of muscle mass before you worry about having abs! You can starve yourself for months and strip off every ounce of fat on your body but you won’t look the way you want to without a solid foundation. Focus on training and eating to fuel performance/muscle gains; you’ll look and feel much better.

Homeostasis is physiological stability. Your body is great at adapting and finding its center when you feed it properly and get enough sleep. When these factors get out of whack, body composition will degrade and you can start to underperform during your training/events. In extreme cases, you become obese and develop metabolic disorders/cardiovascular health problems. It’s important to look at your nutrition, training, and lifestyle as a whole when determining how you proceed with your plan. Dynamically alter your strategy to fit in with your life, NOT the other way around.

A gradual, personalized approach will save you a lot of heartache and keep you free of injuries. Don’t gamble on your health by trying to force things."
