If you’re looking for something totally different to do (and honestly, pretty affordable for a full day out), ICT Pickle Fest is back, and it’s kind of become one of those quirky local events people look forward to every summer.

In the past, this deal didn’t always fall on the 5th of the month, but lately it’s always been on the 5th. Then I visited the Wichita locaiton and saw a sign on the wall that said the 5th of every month. To know exactly when the next one will be, you’ll want to keep an eye on their social media, especially the Carlos O’Kelly’s Facebook Page, where they announce the details.

If you’ve ever had Carlos’ queso, you already know why people get excited for this promotion. It’s creamy, melty, and perfect for dunking their endless chips. Normally, queso is one of those extras that can add up on your bill, but you get to indulge for almost nothing.

As a Wichita mom always looking for ways to treat my daughters without breaking the budget, this deal is one of my favorites. We can sit down for a meal together, enjoy chips and queso, and still keep our dining costs low. It’s the kind of tradition that’s wallet-friendly, which is exactly what living the good life for less in Wichita is all about.

This year, the concerts are back for Twilight Tuesdays at the Zoo (see schedule below).

Sedgwick County Zoo is located in Wichita, Kansas. It is one of the largest zoos in the state and is home to over 3,000 animals, representing nearly 400 species. The zoo covers an area of approximately 247 acres and features a variety of exhibits and attractions.

Some notable exhibits at Sedgwick County Zoo include the African Veldt, Downing Gorilla Forest, Tiger Trek, Slawson Family Tiger Trek, and the Koch Orangutan & Chimpanzee Habitat. The zoo is known for its commitment to conservation and education, offering various programs and events to raise awareness about wildlife and their habitats.

During Twilight Tuesdays, the zoo will be open for extended hours – from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Your reduced $10 admission is good all day! Bring the family to the ZOO and enjoy some quality time strolling through the zoo and seeing all the animals. 

Pro Tip: Some animals are more active in the evening hours when the temperatures have dropped, so take advantage of this special admission price. 

The Twilight Tuesdays event used to be when the zoo stayed open late for members to stroll the zoo and enjoy the cooler evening hours. Later, it became an evening event that was open to everyone at a reduced admission price.

According to the Riverfest website, in 1970, at the City’s Centennial celebration, the goal was to bring the entire community together, to build community pride, and focus on Wichita’s beautiful natural resource, the Arkansas River. In 1971, board members selected May 27, 1972, as the date for the Wichitennial River Festival. Activities included a bathtub race, maypole winding, and an antique auto parade. Around 2,000 buttons were sold at the festival for $1 each. The Coleman Company and KG&E were among the early corporate supporters in 1973. 1974 was an important year for the festival because a group of leaders had the idea of establishing an organization for the festival, made up of young business leaders. This same year, the Festival was extended to 10 days and featured the Sundown Parade, the Twilight Pops Concert, and fireworks. The festival officially became the Wichita River Festival in 1979.

Join Mark Arts and community partners for a creative experience that combines art, which are sure to bring out your inner artist. Art Together, Mark Arts’ community outreach program, provides opportunities for families to create and appreciate art. Monthly programs are developed to highlight unique perspectives, themes and stories within our community. Each Art Together program includes children’s story time, individual hands-on art projects, community art projects, and performances or demonstrations.

June 13: Land That I Love

Mark Arts is taking inspiration from the beauty of nature and music in our country to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and our current Land That I Love exhibition.

This program, from 10 a.m.-noon, is perfect for kids who love art, nature and music.

The event will start at 10 a.m. with a reading of “I Am Made of Mountains” by Alexandra S.D. Hinrichs, a lyrical picture book that celebrates the beauty of nature while exploring the diverse landscapes of the National Parks across the United States. The Wichita-Sedwick County Historical Museum will provide interesting facts about the land we are on and share real bison fur.

After story time, guests make their own landscape art, inspired by the many landscape paintings in Land That I Love.

To wrap up the fun, at 11:30 a.m. the Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance will perform using traditional mountain dulcimers. Kids will even be able to play a dulcimer after the performance.

Stop by for story time in the gallery at 10 a.m., followed by art activities for all ages. Then experience a close encounter with our guest of honor, Peanut the Opossum. Learn about these extraordinary creatures and the ecosystems in which they live with a hands-on presentation by the Great Plains Nature Center.

Art Together is a free monthly Saturday morning program for families to enjoy and appreciate art through stories, art education, and presentations or performances.

Families are invited to join Storytime in the Galleries. Stories connect to monthly themes and are supported by Storytime Village curriculum that enhances reading comprehension and engagement. This opportunity is ideal for families with young children.

Mark Arts staff will provide instruction for families to create a paper lantern and sculptural mooncake.

Sculpture and ceramic demonstrations led by Mark Arts instructors.

Guests can expect a fun-filled weekend at High Park in Derby! The younger attendees can enjoy the Kids Corner, which has had princesses, face painting, bounce houses, foam parties, and more in years past. The older guests can enjoy beverages from the Beer Garden and live music on both nights, along with a cornhole tournament, car show, and more.

Fun Facts about Derby BBQ & Music Fest:

• It’s FREE to attend, with FREE live music and FREE activities in the kid’s corner.
• BBQ tasting kits, drinks, and food are available to purchase.
• The BBQ competitions include the KCBS Cook-off and the Backyard BBQ Cook-off.
• Proceeds from this event benefit the McConnell Air Force Base Military and Family
  Readiness Center. In the past, the City of Derby has donated $20,000 of proceeds from this event to
  the center over 12 years.
• The BBQ & Music Fest is Derby’s largest event, drawing thousands of people over two days.
• They average about 50 professional BBQ teams from the Midwest.

The event began in 2011 as The National BBQ Derby. It started small and has grown over the years. In 2014, it changed its name to the Derby BBQ Festival and became a KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) event. In 2019, it added a music festival and changed its name to the Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Fest. It was our sesquicentennial celebration. Their logo has seen several changes over the years as well, but it’s the same great event.

As a parent, I love experiences that create memories without adding a big expense, and this is one of the Best Father’s Day Deals in Wichita. Pack up the family, take a stroll through the gardens, and enjoy an afternoon outdoors. While dads get in free, all other guests pay regular admission. It’s a simple and affordable way to celebrate the father figures in your life.

Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it. Botanica allows guests to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks, which can save a lot compared to eating out. Find a shady spot, spread out a blanket, and enjoy lunch surrounded by beautiful gardens and flowers. You could even bring a deck of cards or a favorite board game and turn your visit into a relaxing family outing. It’s one of my favorite ways to enjoy Botanica while keeping the day affordable and making the most of your visit.

Happy Father’s Day to two of my favorite dads: my dad and my husband.

The first photo is a special one of my dad and me riding the Joyland Carousel many years ago. It brings back so many great memories, which makes it even more meaningful that I later had the opportunity to help restore the carousel during my time at Botanica. Being part of preserving a piece of Wichita history that meant so much to my family was something I’ll never forget.

The second photo is of my husband being a very good sport during the opening of the Bee House. Whether he’s helping with family adventures, supporting my crazy ideas, or jumping into whatever fun comes our way, he’s always there with a smile.

I’m grateful for both of these men and the love, support, and memories they have given our family. Happy Father’s Day!

Relax and unwind at Botanica with their new concert series this Spring. Twilight Tunes on the Terrace at Botanica is a treat for all ages. Botanica describes this event as a mix of live music, happy hour, and horticulture. These concerts will be on Tuesdays in June & July.

Doors will open at 5:30 pm, and guests can stroll through the gardens and enjoy cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Dinner can also be purchased from Molino’s Mexican Cuisine.

Pro Tip: Guests are also welcome to pack a picnic, but outside alcohol is not allowed in the gardens. Pack your dinner or snacks to save money.

Wichita has many free indoor story times to fuel your child’s imagination and keep you out of the ever-changing Kansas weather. We have scoured the city and created the Ultimate List of Free Story Times in Wichita and the surrounding area!

(We also have a great big list of other free and cheap things for kids to do, as well as a whole page of free and inexpensive indoor places to play.)

Now if you’re like me, you probably already have lots and lots of children’s books at home or you’re thinking ‘Why do I need to go to a story time? I can just check them out at the library?’ While that may be true, story times are about so much more than just reading a book. There are the silly songs, the dancing, the excitement of having someone new read the stories and the interaction with the other kids. Story times are a great, inexpensive way to get out of the house. Most storytimes are 30 minutes to an hour long.

If you’ve never been to a storytime, here is a brief breakdown of what happens. For the most part, children and parents sit together on the floor on reading mats or carpets. The storyteller starts off with interactive rhymes, silly songs or even a dance. Then he or she reads a main story and maybe one or two other books to get the kids excited about reading. Depending on the story time location, there may even be a small craft too. At the end of the story time, you will have the chance to browse other books to check out at the library or to purchase if it’s at a bookstore.

Regal’s Summer Movie Express schedule is below. However, the national schedule may differ from the schedule at our Wichita locations. 

The kid-friendly summer flicks include these family-friendly favorites on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Last year, it was only 2 days a week.

2026 Pool Season is: May 25 – September 6, 2026

City of Wichita Pools have been undergoing changes and upgrades for the past few years. Some of them were turned into Splash Pads, but we still have six Wichita city swimming pools with free swimming days this summer!

The Wichita pools open this year on Memorial Day.

Did you also know you can rent out a city pool for birthday parties and family get-togethers? It’s true! Some pools you can rent after regular hours, and at two of the pools you can have access during public swim times and reserve a private party area.

Season passes for Wichita swimming pools

A season pass allows you access to ALL of the City of Wichita pools for the summer – you can swim all you want!

2026 Season passes are only $70 per individual or $200 for a family of 4. It is $30 for an additional person up to 8 people. These can be purchased at OJ Watson Park or at any city pool.

Coupon books are another way to save money on summer swimming. Pick up a book of 50 coupons for $110, or get 25 coupons for $60. One coupon admits one adult or one child.

FREE Swimming Days at Wichita Pools Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

Kayven’s Helping Hands is a Derby-based nonprofit dedicated to making adventures possible for all through three core programs: children’s literacy, children’s enrichment, and epilepsy education and support. The organization builds and maintains Little Free Libraries, provides free books to children, supports access to camps and activities, and distributes Kayven’s Care Kits to help children and families navigate EEG testing and seizures.

In addition to activities, the event will include a raffle fundraiser featuring family-themed prize packages, including 2 tickets to a Kansas City Chiefs game, as well as tickets and prizes from Tanganyika Wildlife Park, Sedgwick County Zoo, Exploration Place, Wichita Thunder, Wind Surge, Rock River Rapids, and various other local attractions and restaurants. Proceeds from the raffle will directly support Kayven’s Helping Hands programs and help expand resources for local children and families. This year, in addition to raising funds for these programs, a portion of the proceeds will support a local Derby family whose child is currently battling a complex form of epilepsy.

Dino-Mite Free Adventure at Field Station: Celebrate Kayven Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

This September, Shakespeare in the Park returns with one of the most beloved plays of all time, As You Like It. The best part? Every performance is completely FREE and open to the public, making it a wonderful way to enjoy live theater without spending a dime. Donations are welcome and help keep this incredible community tradition alive.

Each show begins at 7 p.m. and brings Shakespeare’s timeless tale of love, family, and fate to life under the Kansas evening sky. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs, and maybe even a picnic, and settle in for an evening of culture and entertainment. It’s a family-friendly way to experience theater while enjoying Wichita’s beautiful parks and community spaces. The show’s approximate running time is two hours. 

My daughters and I love free outdoor performances like this; it’s such a fun and affordable way to expose them to the arts without the stress of ticket costs. They can stretch out on the grass, enjoy a snack, and soak up the story in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. To make it an even better evening, you can stop at one of the many Wichita Restaurants, check out where Kids Eat Free or Cheap, or hit up a Happy Hour on your way.

These activities are being held on THE day, Friday, July 4, 2026.

The Haysville fireworks and other activities are put on by Haysville Rec and the City of Haysville. Since it’s roughly 5 miles south of Wichita, Haysville is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and a perfect place to spend the Independence Day holiday.

All the Fourth of July Celebrations in Haysville take place at Riggs Park, which features a modern playground, sports facilities, walking paths, a pond, and more. The park is centrally located and is a recreational hub for this town.

Haysville, Kansas 4th of July 2026 Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

I highly recommend putting the 4th of July parade on your schedule this year. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday. From festive floats and marching bands to waving flags and smiling faces, there’s something special about a parade that brings the whole community together. Everyone loves a FREE parade, and this one is sure to deliver all the fun and feel-good moments that make Independence Day so memorable.

Derby Fireworks in the Park

Bring a blanket and lawn chair to enjoy this FREE family evening in High Park. The Fireworks in the Park event will be held on July 4 starting at 6 p.m. They’ll have food trucks so you can enjoy dinner together before the big show.

Personal fireworks are not allowed during the event, so leave your sparklers and other items at home. The official Derby fireworks show will begin at approximately 9:40 p.m.

ADA parking will be available at the Darrell Zimmerman Family Shelter parking lot.

If you’re looking for a classic small-town Fourth of July celebration near Wichita, Derby has a full day of family-friendly events planned for July 4, 2026. From an early-morning race and patriotic parade to a free museum visit, a fire station open house, water park fun, and a huge fireworks show, there is something happening all day long.

Many of these activities are free, making this one of the best budget-friendly Independence Day celebrations in the Wichita area.

45th Annual Firecracker Race

Start the holiday with Derby’s longtime Fourth of July tradition.

What You’ll See:

Walk with Wildlife is an immersive experience where you’ll tour habitat stations set up throughout the inner loop of Chisholm Creek Park. You’ll meet turtles, ducks, snakes, honeybees, mammals, amphibians, and raptors. If you’ve never met a bald eagle up close, this is your chance! Be sure to check out our fishing station and meet teams from the Flatland Fly Fishers, the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit, Pratt Education Center, Southeast Kansas Nature Center, Beaver’s Den Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and more. Our paved nature trail is ADA compliant and accessible to all.

Location and Directions:

The Great Plains Nature Center is at 6232 E 29th St N, Wichita, Kansas. If you’re arriving by car, the nature center is easily accessible via highway K-96.

• Take the Woodlawn St. exit and go south.
• Turn right on 29^th St. and take a quick right into our parking lot where you’ll pay $5 to enter the parking lot. (Bring Cash or Scan a QR Code to Submit Payment)

“Walk with Wildlife is a unique opportunity for our community to experience the wonder of native animals up close, right here in Chisholm Creek Park,” says Amanda Alessi, Director of the Great Plains Nature Center. “By connecting people with the wildlife that shares the Great Plains, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for nature and a commitment to protecting it for generations to come.”

Weather Considerations:

Check the weather forecast for Wichita, Kansas, on the day of your visit. Dress appropriately for the weather conditions, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and consider bringing a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. If it’s raining, we’ve got a plan for that, too! Rain or shine, plan to come on out and meet wildlife from across our beautiful state.

What to Bring:

Here are some essential items to bring with you for a comfortable and enjoyable experience:

Camera: Capture the beauty of the Great Plains Nature Center and its wildlife by bringing your camera or smartphone. Our wetlands are teaming with all sorts of amazing birds, fish, turtles, and more!

Binoculars: If you plan to adventure farther into the park, bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your wildlife observation opportunities. You’ll have a better chance of spotting birds, mammals, and other creatures if you’d like to explore the park after visiting our educational stations.

Pocket Guide and Agents of Discovery App: Pick up a pocket guide from the front desk at the nature center and install the Agents of Discovery app on your smartphone before visiting Walk with Wildlife. These resources can help you identify the various species you encounter during the walk and are a great way to introduce your family to these species before they see them in person on Saturday!

It makes for a fun and interesting day spent outside. Really, it’s such a treat to attend this event.

They’ll have various insects, reptiles, mammals, birds, and amphibians, and can answer any questions you or the kids may have.

When you’ve had enough of the Kansas heat, head indoors to the Koch Habitat Hall to enjoy the hands-on activities and nature displays in air-conditioned comfort. Catch a fun and educational videos in Coleman Auditorium and shop in the Owl’s Nest Gift Shop. Don’t miss the outstanding publications and guides by local authors and photographers for sale in the gift shop.
