I have wanted to write this article for a while, and I have just finished the research to help all of us get the best deals at Ross. Every time you go, you can expect to get 40%-60% off no matter when you go. 

The brand, which began in 1982, is described on its website as the “nation’s largest off-price retail chain.”

Ross purchased its merchandise directly from the manufacturers, which allowed them to offer deep discounts.

Tips for Shopping at Ross:

• Shop on Monday’s that’s when markdowns happen to grab the best deals before they get picked through. 
• New merchandise shops to the stores during the work week, so if you can’t go on Monday, it’s best to shop during the week because, most likely, the best stuff is gone by the weekend.
• If you are 55 years or older, you get 10% off every Tuesday. It’s called “every Tuesday club. You must sign up in the store and show an ID to show your age.
• According to the Ross return policy. If you buy something and it gets marked down within 30 days you can return it and buy it back for less.
• Look for “Irregular” tags. What does that mean? It will say Irregular on the side of the tag. It didn’t meet the manufacturer’s guidelines and went to Ross. They are the misses markdowns but make sure there isn’t anything wrong with it. 
• The best times to shop at Ross are in January and July. That’s when they have the most significant deals!
•  You can try to negotiate the price of a damaged item if you are up for trying.

This is the biggest flea market in Wichita, with hundreds of high-quality vendors of all types with treasures. And because it’s indoors, the flea market will happen rain or shine. It’s the place to be on a weekend day.

Third Thursday in Derby, Kansas, happens in the Spring and Fall. Hop in your car, take Rock Road and head South, and you will run right into Derby. Derby is only about 10 miles South depending on where you are in Wichita. If you have never been to Derby, it’s a great suburb with Rock River Rapids and Field Station Dinosaurs Park.

2026 Pool Season is: May 25 – September 6, 2026

City of Wichita Pools have been undergoing changes and upgrades for the past few years. Some of them were turned into Splash Pads, but we still have six Wichita city swimming pools with free swimming days this summer!

The Wichita pools open this year on Memorial Day.

Pool Party!

Did you also know you can rent out a city pool for birthday parties and family get-togethers? It’s true! Some pools you can rent after regular hours, and at two of the pools you can have access during public swim times and reserve a private party area.

Season passes for Wichita swimming pools

A season pass allows you access to ALL of the City of Wichita pools for the summer – you can swim all you want!

2026 Season passes are only $70 per individual or $200 for a family of 4. It is $30 for an additional person up to 8 people. These can be purchased at OJ Watson Park or at any city pool.

Wichita City Pools coupon books

Coupon books are another way to save money on summer swimming. Pick up a book of 50 coupons for $110, or get 25 coupons for $60. One coupon admits one adult or one child.

Free Yoga and Zumba at Exploration Place, Saturdays in Wichita Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

The Friends of the Library takes pride in the high-quality books they offer. There will be fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books available. You’ll find DIY books, history, religion, health, self-help, fiction, romance, business, biographies, crafts, art, music, coffee table books, and more.

The Friends of the Wichita Public Library (FWPL) organization has announced that the next sale of donated books will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Advanced Learning Library (711 W. 2nd Street). The event is open to the public, and customers may either purchase an FWPL cloth tote bag and fill it for $10 or bring a previously purchased FWPL bag (red, green, blue, or purple with FWPL logo) and fill it for $5. Library-themed 150^th anniversary merchandise will also be sold.

Paid members of FWPL may attend a special member-only preview book sale on Friday, July 10, at the Advanced Learning Library from 5 to 6:30 p.m. FWPL memberships range from $15 to $150 and can be purchased at the preview event. A membership application is also available online at wichitalibraryfriends.org/shop. Proceeds from the book sale will benefit the Wichita Public Library by helping to fund literacy initiatives, branch programs, and author events.

Book donations:  
Gifts of books and other materials (music CDs, magazines, movie DVDs, audiobook CDs, and sheet music) that are in good condition are accepted year-round at any Library location during open hours. To arrange large donations, email friends@wichitalibrary.org. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Year-round book sales:
Donated books, music CDs, magazines, movie DVDs, audiobooks, and sheet music are sold year-round to the public at the Friends Used Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Advanced Learning Library (711 West 2^nd St. N.). The bookstore operates Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 316-261-8500 for more information.

Proceeds from book sales support programs and services at our Wichita public libraries.

To attend Lowe’s free kids’ workshops, register in advance to reserve your spot. If you forget to sign up, walk-ins are welcome after 12 p.m. on workshop days, but only if there are extra kits available.

These workshops are for kids of all ages to learn basic building skills. When you get there, you will check in and receive your free project kit, which usually includes precut wood, nails, screws, and any other materials needed.

The first time you go, you will get a FREE apron, and each time you complete a project, you will get a collectible badge.

Some past projects have been birdhouses, holiday decorations, trucks, and more. Once the project is completed, you get to take it home to enjoy.

This is a great, budget-friendly family activity.

  • There will be very limited space around the amphitheater bowl for lawn chairs, so you may not be able to set up your chair if you bring it. If you want a lawn chair, I will go early.
• Will there be Food at RiverFlix?
  • Yes, you can purchase food from local food trucks, or you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks, which I absolutely love!
    • Bringing your food is a fantastic way to keep the cost of a family night out low. A free movie and the convenience of enjoying the food you already have—there’s no better or more affordable way to have a fun night out! Finch Robots

Need a robot?  Of course you do!  Meet Finch Robot 2.0, a programmable robot that any one from kindergarteners to adults can use for hands-on learning about coding.  What you program (within reasonable limits, of course), Finch Robot will do!

According to the library’s website, “these robots work with many different programming languages and come with extensive features.”  

Finch Robot can be checked out for 14 days, and renewed up to 2 times.  If someone is on the waiting list, Finch Robot is not renewable.

Internet Bundles

Do you need more than just a hotspot?  What about a Chromebook or laptop AND a mobile hotspot?  The library has grouped these two items together for checkout under the name “Internet Bundle.”  Funded by the Emergency Connectivity Fund Program (ECF), internet bundles can be checked out by adult library cardholders who qualify. (You must attest to not having access to equipment or services sufficient to access the internet.)  For more information about Internet Bundles, checkout this page from the library’s website.  It’s important to note that these devices automatically delete your files after they are powered off or a session ends...so it is strongly recommended that the user store all files on a flash drive or other such removeable storage device.

Internet Bundles can be checked out for up to 28 days at a time.  If not returned on time, the library will assess fees.  Bundles can be renewed up to two times if no other cardholder has reserved it, and bundles can be put on hold.

The park operates year-round, but the opening weekend, when all rides and special activities open for the season, takes place just before Wichita schools’ Spring Break. The ride season wraps up at the end of October.

This is one of Wichita’s best parks and playgrounds for kids. You can kayak, pedal boat, ride the train, fish, play volleyball, or play Mini Golf at Watson Park. Little kids can even ride ponies! And all of the activities are affordable.

Pedal Boats at OJ Watson Park:

Among the many unique features of Watson Park is the availability to take a ride on pedal boats! Watson Park offers 16 pedal boats, each capable of holding up to three adults and two children or four adults. The maximum number of people allowed in the boat is five. All riders under the age of 12 must wear a lifejacket. No fishing is allowed from the boat. Pedal Boat schedule

Kayak Rentals at OJ Watson Park: 

Self-Service Kayak Rentals

Cost: $10 per hour

Not only do they have pedal boats available to rent for $5 per person on weekends, they have Kayak Rentals; including tandem kayaks (not as hard to do as you might think).

In these kayaks, you can paddle around the lake. We have seen some beginner kayaking skills classes offered through the Park and Recreation Department, so keep an eye out for those in the Evolve activities guide.

Individuals may bring their own kayak to the park, the fee is $5 daily or $50 for an entire year.

O.J. Watson Park Yellow Brick Road:

Cost: FREE

Open: During Park Hours

One of the most recognizable traits of OJ Watson park is the yellow brick road that will have you skipping and singing “We’re off to see the Wizard!”

Follow the yellow brick road and you’ll see a train crossing and the cute covered bridge. This is a nice walk for the whole family.

Miniature Golf at OJ Watson Park

Price: $5

Open: Year-Round

You can play their 18-hole mini-golf course! That’s quite a deal—in fact, we think it’s the cheapest mini-golf in Wichita. The course is adorable, too. It has been newly renovated and lighted! While on the course you’ll notice murals from local artists for your viewing pleasure.

Pony Rides at Watson Park:

Price: $5 per person

Open: Available on weekends, March through October

The pony rides are another thing that sets this park apart from other parks in Kansas.

You’ll see the little stable and arena where the ponies are.

Riders must be under the age of 10 and under 60 pounds. (The ponies are little! And very cute.) Riders also must be able to hold on to the saddle by themselves and adults will assist them getting on and off.

Grab your camera and let your kids or grandkids get their first taste of an old west adventure. (A very mild, tame and circular adventure with adult supervision, but a thrill for kids nonetheless.)

OJ Watson Park also has a miniature train ride for ALL ages. Listen for the train whistle and hop aboard for a ride around the park and the lake. It even goes through a quaint red and white painted covered bridge. Train schedule

The park also has three different playgrounds! Each is a bit different. One has this rubberized surface and the other two have sand. These are FREE.

More Things to Do at OJ Watson Park:

Volleyball For those with great eye-hand coordination, Watson Park has sand volleyball courts, and volleyball nets available to rent for $5 per hour per court (minimum of 3 hours).

Kite Flying With its vast acreage OJ Watson is also a fantastic place to fly a kite in Wichita.

Picnic You can also enjoy a nice picnic lunch at one of their several picnic spots! Bring your own blanket or use one of over 100 picnic tables available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fishing Take the whole family fishing at one of the two fishing lakes at OJ Watson Park. Each lake has a variety of fish in it, from bass to bluegill to catfish and more. Adults over the age of 16 must have a Kansas state fishing license. Kids don’t need one. (Yay!)

Concession Stand It’s very handy that Watson Park has a concession stand on grounds with simple, moderately priced food, snacks, and drinks. The concession stand also sells bait if you want to go fishing. The stand is open limited hours during the spring, summer, and fall and closed in winter.

Campfire Circle Watson Park is one of the few Wichita parks that has a campfire circle available for use by the public. You do need to reserve the area first.

Shelter Rentals OJ Watson Park has five open shelters that are available to rent. The size, price, and amenities vary at each shelter, but they range from very large shelters with electrical hookups, charcoal grills, and lots of picnic tables to smaller shelters with just the basics. Prices range from $15 to $60 for three hours.

Community Facility: The small enclosed shelter, or community facility, is also available to rent. It has restrooms, tables, and chairs and can hold up to 50 people.

Hayrack Rides: With advance reservation, you can take your group on a hayrack ride around the park.

Inflatables: Have a party at Watson Park and rent an inflatable for the kids. Inflatable rental prices vary, and you do need to rent a shelter also (additional fee) in order to rent an inflatable at Watson Park. What a great idea for a child’s summer birthday party or a family reunion.

Events at OJ Watson Park:

Watson Park hosts a free O.K. Kids Day most years. This usually happens in May each year, and is a great morning of activities for kids.

In December, the miniature train becomes the center of Watson’s Christmas Express, a holiday event for kids themed after the Polar Express book and movie.

When to Visit Coronado Heights Castle in Kansas

Coronado Heights Castle is open every day from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and admission is FREE. However, since it is on an unpaved dirt road, I would not recommend going after a hard rain when the roads may be too muddy to navigate or if there has been a lot of ice and snow.

How to Get to Coronado Heights

From Wichita, KS, follow I-135 North toward Salina. Then take exit 78 for KS-4 West (aka Coronado Avenue) for 3 miles north of Lindsborg to Coronado Heights Road. (Coronado Heights Road is an unpaved dirt road.) Continue 1 mile west, past the Smoky Hill Cemetery, and turn right at the stone gate. From there, you will travel up a short, winding dirt road to the parking lot.

Our Day Trip to Coronado Heights

My daughter and I went on a weekend trip with her scout group to Lindsborg, KS and Coronado Heights. Due to the threat of rain later in the day, we decided to go to Coronado Heights first. Since it was July when we went, the summer wildflowers were in full bloom, making a beautiful view from the top of the castle.

The castle itself,  has a main room with some stone picnic tables and a fireplace. The only light inside comes from natural light streaming through the window-like cutouts in the stone. To get to the top of the castle there is a narrow, spiral stone staircase. From the top, you can see for miles in every direction, making this a great stop for families, photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

The castle is surrounded by stone picnic tables, dirt trails and a stone staircase that leads down to a 1988 sculpture by John Whitfield that states Coronado Heights “A Place to Share” and on the other side, it says “Coronado 1541”. If you don’t want to walk down the stairs, you will also see this monument halfway up your drive to the top of Coronado Heights. It is a great place to stop and take a picture.

We enjoyed walking the dirt nature trails, climbing on the rocks, watching the cows grazing in nearby fields and enjoying all that the outdoors in Kansas has to offer.

Note: There is a stone enclosed restroom area, but it is very rustic. In other words, it is an outhouse with no running water, so don’t forget to bring your Kansas Road Trip Travel Essentials.

History of Coronado Heights

The Coronado Heights Castle and picnic area was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to commemorate Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s quest for gold. (Source) Legend has it that in 1541, he climbed to the top of the hill where the castle now stands and looked around.  Realizing there was no gold to be found, he returned to Mexico. We do not know if Coronado actually stood on top of the hill where the castle now stands. However, in 1915 Johan August Udden, a professor of natural science at Bethany College in Lindsborg and amateur archeologist, discovered a small piece of Spanish chain mail at a Quiviran Indian village excavation site a few miles southwest of Lindsborg. (Source) (The chain mail is now on display at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, KS.) So we do know that the Spanish explorers did make it to Kansas and they did interact with the Quiviran Indians.

Other Places to Explore Near Coronado Heights

Since we spent so much time enjoying our time at Coronado Heights, we ran out of time to check out the nearby Hoglund Dugout. It is a 6 foot x 12 foot stone lined dugout that was the first home of Gustaf and Maria Hoglund. The home was built in the summer of 1868 and they used their covered wagon canopy as a roof.

I plan on taking my kids to see this little known treasure the next time we’re up that way. I can’t imagine living in a home that small! According to the Lindsborg Convention & Visitors Bureau, to get to the Hoglund Dugout, “Drive 2.1 miles south on 12th Avenue from the entrance of Coronado Heights. Look for an opening in the tree line and a low silver iron rail fence on the east side of the road. Walk east approximately 50 feet to the dugout. There are no directional signs. Open daily, no admission fee.”

If you still haven’t had enough fun at this point, you can also stop in the Swedish town of Lindsborg on the way home to shop, visit the city park and so much more.

For those who love the drive-in and want to help support it even more, the Starlite has added a flexible option this year. While the base price for the pass is $125, supporters can choose to contribute more by selecting the “Change Amount” option when purchasing their pass.

Supplies are limited, so anyone planning to enjoy plenty of movie nights this year may want to grab a pass before they sell out.

Pro Tip: Purchase the season pass in December or early in the year to receive a discount.

Walking Trails Wichita: Parks & Natural Areas

Sedgwick County Park is another gorgeous place for a long walk or bike ride, and in the summer it has shade! It also has a stream, covered bridge, and water fountains for both you and your dog. Kids can play on any one of several playgrounds, and your family could fly kites or fish after your walk. (A fishing license is required for 16 and older.) Entrances to the park from 21st Street or 13th Street, just east of Ridge Road in northwest Wichita.

• Sedgwick County Park Address: 6501 W 21st St, Wichita, KS 67205.

Pawnee Prairie Park is a favorite walking area for many Wichitans, including the equine variety. Pawnee Prairie has an 5-mile bridle trail and 8-mile nature trail. (I think there’s a bike path too? But bikes and other wheeled conveyances are not allowed on the nature trail. You can bring your dog, though, on a leash.) This park is designated as a wild habitat area and is just lovely. Pawnee Prairie Park is south of Kellogg between Tyler and Maize roads in southwest Wichita.

Swanson Park, in northwest Wichita, is another natural oasis within the city limits. Like Chisholm Creek Park and Pawnee Prairie Park, it has been designated as a Wichita Wild Habitat Area. The walking path is 1.2 miles long and takes about 22 minutes to complete. This is considered an easy route. This trail is also great for running, and it’s FREE to enjoy!

• Swanson Park is located at 1011 N. Maize Rd.
• It’s open from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. every day.

Meadows Park on the far west end of Wichita is about 51.38 acres with one Nature Trail that’s 1.46 miles. The park includes a children’s playground area, benches, and fishing pond, and is a designated Wichita Wildlife Habitat Area. FREE to enjoy!

Pracht Wetlands Area in northwest Wichita on 29th Street between Maize and Tyler is a brand new park with wildlife viewing areas and paved paths. If you’re patient, you’ll probably hear muskrats splashing into the water. Stay still and quiet after that and you can watch them swim!

WB Harrison Park is near Webb and Harry is 40.15 acres with a 3/4-mile fitness trail. Dogs can get some exercise too with the two-pen dog park, recently renovated. The park has a playground, fishing pond, sports fields, restrooms, and lots of shade and benches. There’s even a new splash pad that was installed in 2023. FREE to enjoy!

Hermann Hill Park nature trail starts at the WATER Center, where it follows a man-made creek to the Arkansas River. Trail-guide pamphlets are located at the trailhead. There’s also a disc golf course at Hermann Hill Park if you prefer to do your walking while playing a sport.

• Hermann Hill Nature Trail Address: 101 E. Pawnee in south Wichita.

Rebbud Trail begins near the Kellogg & I-135 area and extends east, passing through neighborhoods and green spaces, including stops near Wichita State University and further toward Andover. It’s ideal for walkers, joggers, and cyclists looking for a quiet escape from busy streets.

Red Bud Trail Key Access Points

• 702 N Hydraulic Ave: This is the western trailhead near downtown Wichita, offering parking facilities.
• 9th St. & Hillside Ave: A notable trailhead featuring public art installations and a rest area.
• 13th St. & Roosevelt Ave: Another access point with amenities for trail users.
• 17th St. & Oliver Ave: Located near Wichita State University, this trailhead provides convenient access for students and residents.
• 143rd St. East: An access point further east in Wichita.

Arkansas River Path is a paved trail that runs along the Arksansas River passing downtown and the Keeper of the Plains.

Clapp Memorial Park offers a welcoming space for walkers, runners, and families looking to enjoy the outdoors. Its a 2.3-mile loop trail that provides an easy, scenic route that takes about 40–45 minutes to complete, making it perfect for a leisurely walk or light exercise. The park also features Wichita’s first inclusive playground, a dog park, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Thanks, Diane, for the info.

Walking Trails Close to Wichita

Spring Creek and Geifer Park Nature Trails Just slightly outside of Wichita at Cheney Lake are two amazing nature trails I personally love – and I take pictures of what I love (and sometimes silly videos). Please visit my post about these two awesome hiking trails at Cheney Lake West Shore.

Teter Nature Trail in El Dorado State Park We found a wonderfully shady trail near the Walnut River campground. It felt like a secret place – except that other hikers were on the trail with us. We found an arched bridge and a curving stairway in the woods. It’s really cool.

Chase State Fishing Lake and Waterfalls This is a day trip from Wichita and great to visit after it rains because the falls are flowing (but then the trail becomes muddy and slippery, so consider that too). I loved this trail so. much. Beautiful, shady, natural, and hidden behind what looked like any ordinary Kansas fishing lake. Read about our adventure and see our pics here.

Buffalo Tracks Canyon Nature Trail in the Kanopolis State Park is a scenic trail that takes visitors through rugged sandstone canyons, towering rock formations, and rolling prairie landscapes. The area is named after the fossilized buffalo tracks embedded in the rock,

Chaplin Nature Center in Arkansas City is about a five-mile trail. A hidden gem is open to the public for free by the Wichita Audubon Society. This 240-acre property feels even larger, thanks to its diverse landscape, from beautifully preserved tallgrass prairie to a scenic stretch along the Arkansas River.

Elk River Trail at Elk City Reservoir near Independence, KS, is one of the most scenic hiking trails in Kansas. Spanning about 15 miles, the rugged trail winds through rolling hills, dense woodlands, and striking limestone bluffs overlooking the reservoir. Hikers and backpackers will find challenging terrain with rocky paths, creek crossings, and breathtaking views. The trail is known for its unique rock formations

Urban Walks in Wichita

Downtown Wichita has nine themed walking routes. Each loop has a theme and features signs that highlight entertaining, amusing or just interesting information about people and places in Kansas. Here’s a printable map of the trails in Wichita and Haysville. The Haysville Walking Trails were part of the same project as the downtown trails. There are two walking loops, each with a theme.

Wichita Art Museum’s Art Garden is free and open to the public every day. Walk around the eight acres of this “roofless museum” and enjoy the outdoor sculptures, lush perennials and grasses, shrubs and trees. Take a guided tour of the art garden for free every third Saturday from spring to fall. 1400 Museum Boulevard, Wichita, KS.

Douglas Design District murals are another art installation that can provide a walking experience. The first murals were painted by volunteer artists during Avenue Art Days in the fall of 2015 and then again in subsequent. At present, the exhibit includes more than 40 murals along a stretch of East Douglas Avenue from Washington to Oliver. Though you can walk this – there are sidewalks – it’s quite a stretch through an urban area with lots of traffic, so you might prefer to park your car, walk a section, and then drive to the next section until you’ve seen all the murals. (According to Google maps, it’s only about five miles round-trip, so hopefully, that helps you decide how you’ll tackle your trek.) There’s a very good map at the Avenue Art Days website. And they now have a free app for both Apple and Android devices.

Who is Paying for the Sunflower Summer Program?

The Kansas State Department of Education provides this program through a grant funded by Elementary and Secondary Education Emergency Relief (ESSER) from the American Rescue Plan Act. This is all information from the Sunflower Summer website, which you can see here. 

Sunflower Summer is FREE to Kansas students and their families.

Join Mark Arts and community partners for a creative experience that combines art, which are sure to bring out your inner artist. Art Together, Mark Arts’ community outreach program, provides opportunities for families to create and appreciate art. Monthly programs are developed to highlight unique perspectives, themes and stories within our community. Each Art Together program includes children’s story time, individual hands-on art projects, community art projects, and performances or demonstrations.

Art Together: Rooted in Rhythm

Date: July 11, 2016

Join Mark Arts for a morning of storytelling, music, and creativity during July’s Art Together. This free, all-ages program celebrates the rhythms and traditions of percussion from around the world. The event begins with a reading of Saryana and the Wonderful Djembe Drum by Madalina Hubert, followed by an energetic performance from the ICT Youth Drumline. Participants will also create and decorate their own drum to take home and learn a few basic cadences from the drumline, making it a fun, hands-on experience for the whole family.

Regal’s Summer Movie Express schedule is below. However, the national schedule may differ from the schedule at our Wichita locations. 

The kid-friendly summer flicks include these family-friendly favorites on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Last year, it was only 2 days a week.

Showtimes may be subject to change, but as of this writing, the summer kids’ movies appear to be scheduled for 11 a.m. at both Wichita Regal Cinemas.

As a mom always trying to keep my girls busy during the summer without spending a fortune, this is one of those deals I genuinely love and take advantage of every year. For just a couple of dollars, you can get out of the house, enjoy the air conditioning, and make a fun memory together.

$1 Kids Movies at Regal Cinemas this Summer 2026 Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

Wichita Public Schools will offer FREE meals for children and teens across Wichita. Kids can get healthy meals during the summer months when school is out of session, and adults can also get breakfast and lunch for a fee. This year, it will run from May 27 to July 24, 2026.

About FREE Meals for Kids in Wichita

Who can qualify for the free meals, what meals are available, and how do we get the free meals for kids?

• Breakfast and lunch will be available.
• No application is required.
• Any child can participate. You do not need to be a Wichita Public School student.
• At most locations, meals must be consumed onsite. You can take fruit or grain from their meal offsite to eat later.
• For onsite meals, children must be present. Parents or guardians can not pick up meals on behalf of their kids. 
• Look for large yellow signs to see what door to enter at each location (locations are listed below).
• This year, one site will have up to 3,000 to-go meals available for those who register in advance each week. This has limited availability and distinct rules.

About the Menu

• The menus are subject to change.
• The meals served are healthy and follow USDA nutrition guidelines.
  • Breakfast will include: 1 serving of grain, 1 serving of fruit or juice, and 1 serving milk
  • Lunch will include: 1 serving of grain, 1 serving of protein, 1 serving of fruit, 1 serving of vegetable, 1 serving of milk
    • Protein may include: yogurt, cheese stick, and other protein sources
• Lunches are boxed lunches, with a hot entree offered on most days.
• All sites will be closed on July 3 & 4
• Meals are free for all children ages 1-18.  Adults are welcome to purchase a meal
  • Adult breakfast price: $3.25

Answers about USD 259’s Free Summer Kids Meals Program

What is the summer meal program?  The summer meal program is a USDA-funded program and is designed to provide kids and teens ages 1-18 with healthy meals during the summer months when school is out of session. 

Where do I go to get free meals?  Yard signs will be used at each site to direct children and parents to the correct door.  Doors will be marked with bright yellow signs. A map of all sites, including address, dates, and times, is coming soon.

What are the requirements for my child or teen to receive a meal?  There is no application or registration required to receive an onsite meal. You do not need to provide proof of income, residency or citizenship.  Just show up with the kids! To-go meals from the site that offers them will require weekly advance registration and may be picked up by a parent.

Is there a cost? No.  All summer meals offered through the USDA’s program are free to all children, ages 1-18.  

Do meals have to be eaten onsite?  Yes, with one exception, due to federal regulations, all meals must be consumed on-site.  Children can take one fruit or grain from their meal off-site to eat later.

Do children need to be present? Yes, due to changes at the federal level, parents and guardians can no longer pick up meals on behalf of their kids and meals must be consumed onsite.  

Can adults eat free summer meals?  Meals are intended for kids and teens.  However, adults are welcome to purchase a meal for a small fee. Please bring exact change, as the site staff does not carry change.

Who funds free summer meals? Summer meals programs are federally funded by the USDA through the Summer Food Service Program.

New this summer: One site can offer a limited number of to-go meals each week to those who register in advance. For free meals at all other locations, children must be present to receive them, and all meals must be consumed on-site.

First Responders Day is also during Twilight Tuesdays! This year, the evening also features live music. It’s a great way to honor those who serve our community while enjoying a summer night of music, animals, and family fun.

Veterans Memorial Park in Wichita

Date: July 4

Every year, at 9 a.m. on July 4th, visit the American Revolution Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park, located at 339 Veterans Parkway, near the river and close to downtown, for a ceremony commemorating the events of the day when Americans formally declared their independence. This is a remarkable day to commemorate. The event usually includes:

• Performance of the National Anthem and Taps on the bugle
• Chaplain’s invocation and closing prayer
• Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance
• Presentation of colors by the McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard
• Guest speaker

Bring a lawn chair if you or a loved one won’t be able to stand for the whole ceremony, which usually lasts around an hour. The Independence Day tribute at Veterans Memorial Park is FREE and open to the public.

Haysville Fourth of July Event

Take the short drive to Haysville for a full day of fun! They have everything from a parade, cornhole, frog races, pool games, and, of course, fireworks. If you are looking for a small-town, all-American celebration, look no further.

Date: July 4th

El Dorado really knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July. Between the lake, small-town charm, and a full day of activities, it’s one of my favorite nearby Independence Day destinations. My girls love the free parade down Main Street, and the day also includes a free swim, baseball, a veterans’ ceremony, and a fireworks show to end the evening.

Mulvane 4th of July

Date: July 4

Mulvane’s annual Fourth of July Parade and watermelon feed is a longtime community tradition. The parade travels down Main Street and features public safety vehicles, colorful floats, local organizations, businesses, and community groups, all with plenty of patriotic spirit. Fireworks Laws and Rules

A little friendly reminder from my daughters’ godfather, who’s a Wichita firefighter: enjoy the fireworks, but make sure they’re done before midnight. The police department plans to strictly enforce the rules this year, and the fine is $1,000. Have a blast, be respectful of your neighbors, and let’s keep all 10 fingers and that $1,000 in our pockets.
