Our art museum is fun and unique! The permanent collection with over 6,000 works of art, including 20th and 21st-century work, is free to visit, along with their kids’ PLAY area with toys and art supplies. Old Cowtown Museum

You should experience this Old West treasure while you’re in Wichita! Old Cowtown Museum offers free admission on Sundays from April through October. Explore the Wichita of the 1800s by walking through real and reproduction buildings, watching a gunfight at high noon, and moseying up to the saloon for some sarsaparilla. Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum

This is the clock tower building! It’s impossible to miss when you’re downtown. Admission is free every Sunday. WSCHM is truly one of our best, housed in Wichita’s old city hall building with a unique focus on local Wichita history and great programs year-round, many of which are free. Great Plains Nature Center

Kansas Wildlife Exhibit at Riverside Park

City Arts (CityArts)

Always free. Three floors open to the public with weekly gallery exhibits in Downtown Wichita. You might catch an art class in progress. One of the more beloved free galleries in the city. The Mark Arts Gallery

Wichita State University — Free Museums & Art

WSU’s campus features two great free museums: the Ulrich Museum of Art (20th and 21st-century art, traveling exhibits, permanent collection) and the Original Pizza Hut Museum (Dan and Frank Carney borrowed $600 from their mom to open the first Pizza Hut ever). WSU also has 81 works of art across its 330-acre campus as part of the Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection — use the free Smartify app for a self-guided tour.

Wichita is home to an outstanding collection of bronze sculptures and other public art. This is part of the unique flavor of our local streets. Whether you’re driving or walking downtown or really anywhere in Wichita, you will likely come across a sculpture that is beautiful, interesting, or downright surprising. (I’m almost always startled into tapping my brakes when driving by one particular sculpture on Douglas. In my peripheral vision, it looks like a person about to cross the street! Thankfully, I don’t think it’s caused any accidents yet.)

Get the Ulrich Museum app and go on a self-guided tour of the 80-something works on WSU’s 330-acre campus. In particular, be sure to look for the milliped, LOVE sculpture, and the toucan tile mural, Personages Oiseaux. (It isn’t really the toucan tile mural; that’s just what I call it.)

Sedgwick County Park Art Walk

Sedgwick County Park is one of those places that shows up on our list of free things to do for lots of different categories, because it has so many neat features. One of the newer features is an art installation we call the Art Walk. It’s near the north entrance, right back behind the Sunflower Shelter.

Our family has visited several of these water playgrounds over the past few summers. They’re perfect for a fun, spontaneous (and FREE) summer outing when the kids need something to do. Tip: water shoes are a good idea to avoid slipping and/or stepping in (or on) something you’d rather not.  

Most splash pads are typically open by Memorial Day, but opening dates and hours may vary by park. For the past several years, the city has even kept them open until the end of September.

Boston Park Splash Pad

SouthEast Wichita

Location: 6655 E. Zimmerly St., Wichita, KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This splash pad has a fun aviation theme with many tall pole fountains and small bubble fountains from the ground. Next to the fountains is a nice patch of turf, great for sun bathing after having been soaking wet. 

Buffalo Park Water Playground

West Wichita

Location: 10201 Hardtner Road, Wichita KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

The splash pad at Buffalo Park is lots of fun. This prairie-themed water playground has native limestone, sculptural grass-like overhead sprayers and an assortment of ground jets.  A buffalo head sculpture that sprays and mists water welcomes patrons to the plaza, which has a colored concrete pattern inspired by the grass seeds of the prairie.  Native grasses surround the area. In addition to the fun water spray area, Buffalo park has an outdoor open shelter and picnic tables, a circular drop-off area, and restrooms.*Note that half of the shelter can be rented out on the weekends so please make sure you park your items on the other side if it seems that there is a party going on in the other side. 

Edgemoor Park Splash Park

East Wichita

Location: 5815 E 9th St N, Wichita, KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

The old Edgemoor Park pool was turned into a new water playground/splash park in the city of Wichita.

Evergreen Park Splash Pad

Northwest Wichita

Location: 2700 Woodland N, Wichita, KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This new splashpad gives off aztec vibes or flashbacks to the 90’s Nickelodeon show Legends of the Hidden Temple (who remembers this show?!). A little on the smaller side so I suggest trying to avoid this location on the weekends. 

Fairmount Splash Park

East Wichita

Location: 1647 N. Yale St., Wichita, KS 67218

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This splash park seems to be a carbon copy of the Osage feature. It also has impressive creature splash fountain features and colorful rings to run through. Again, lots of opportunity for cute photos opps of your kiddos as they run around. Fountains are open in the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Lincoln Park Splash Pad

South Wichita

Location: 1323 S. Topeka

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This park’s splash pad is really more of a small area with interactive fountains spraying from the concrete floor. Great fun for kiddos to run through as they are playing on the playground but not a place I suggest venturing to with swim getups and water toys. 

Linwood South Park  – Will not be open for the 2025 Season

South East Wichita

Hours: Closed for 2025

This splash park is one that the city replaces a run-down city pool with. This splash park is much more than just a few fountains shooting water out of the ground.  It has really cool water features, bright play equipment, and lots of shade. I highly recommend visiting this one, this summer! 

Old Town Plaza Splash Park

Downtown Wichita

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

These fountains are in the center of Old Town Square in downtown Wichita. Being that this is in the middle of the city plaza this is not a location where you camp out for very long, nor is it a location to where swimming suits. It is, however, a fun area for kids to run through a few times to cool off in the heat of summer.  The Old Town fountain is open from 10 a.m. to noon daily.

Osage Splash Park

South East Wichita

Location: 2121 W. 31st Street South, Wichita KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

One of the most impressive splash parks in Wichita, this interactive fountain features playful creatures spouting water and colorful rings for kids to run through. There are lots of opportunities for cute photo ops of your kiddos as they run around. The fountains are open in the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

These fountains are in front of Old Navy/Dress Barn, and are usually on every day from approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., off during inclement weather.

Tanganyika Wildlife Park’s splash pad opened in 2020 and is free for season pass-holders and paying visitors. This splash park is quite impressive containing multiple tall fountains, water buckets, and ground bubble fountains. If you plan to visit Tanganyika this summer, I suggest having your kiddos spend some time cooling off in this new park feature!

Maize Splash Pad

Location: 401 Khedive, Maize KS

Hours: The pad typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes on Labor Day weekend and is open from 9 AM to 8 PM

This splash pad in located in Maze Ks. There are picnic tables, benches, and awnings for some shade. The city added new picnic tables under new awings to expand the splashpad park! If you get there and the water isn’t on, look for a button on a pole. That starts it going!

Derby’s Madison Avenue Central Park

Location: 512 E. Madison Ave., Derby, KS

Derby has a free splash pad in Madison Avenue Central Park, with shaded seating areas and an all-access playground nearby.

Fred A. Cohlmia Park, Haysville Splash Pad

Location: 525 Sarah Ln, Haysville, KS

The splash pad in Haysville is just outside the swimming pool area. It opens in May and usually remains open until October. Hours: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Lights go on automatically 9:15 p.m.

McLaughlin Park Splash Park & Lion’s Park Splash Park in Valley Center

Location: 716 McLaughlin, Valley Center KS

Hours: 10 am – 9 pm from Memorial Day to October 1st (or the first freeze)

Valley Center has a free splash pad in McLaughlin Park.

Robert Shryock Park in Augusta, KS

Location: 2923 Ohio St. #2829, Augusta KS

Hours: 10 am – 8 pm from Memorial Day to the second Monday in September

The Augusta splash pad is near Augusta City Lake and – like the nearby playground – has a fairy tale theme. It seems worth the trip to allow your little one to explore!

If you’ve ever had Carlos’ queso, you already know why people get excited for this promotion. It’s creamy, melty, and perfect for dunking their endless chips. Normally, queso is one of those extras that can add up on your bill, but you get to indulge for almost nothing.

Botanica Illuminations (November/December) — Botanica’s Illuminations is an annual tradition in Wichita, which fills the night sky with holiday lights — up to two million of them — and Christmas music. Home Depot Free Kids Workshops 2026 Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

All users must be 18 or older and are only available during park hours. Rentals include a life jacket, paddle, and kayak, and are facilitated through the Rental Process. Fun app. Users will scan a QR code on the cage to reserve and pay for a kayak for a specific amount of time at their chosen location. When finished, users unlock the cage in the app and return the equipment.

Receive basic instructions on kayak paddling techniques and safety. Then, you’re off for a leisurely float. Available on a first-come, first-served basis. Waivers must be signed. Pre-registration is not available.

If you haven’t visited WaterWalk lately, now is the perfect time. After being shut down during the drought in 2023, the fountains sat silent for three years. This summer, they’re back and putting on their signature show Thursday through Sunday evenings. Best of all, it’s completely free to enjoy.

It’s one of those simple, inexpensive outings that remind you why Wichita is such a great place to call home.

And based on the reaction to City Councilman Dalton Glasscock’s announcement on social media, many Wichitans didn’t even know they existed. If that’s you, you’re in for a treat. If you’ve seen them before, you know exactly why this is good news.

What Are the WaterWalk Fountains?

The fountains were installed in October 2012 as part of Wichita’s ongoing investment in downtown riverfront development. They stretch 150 feet and feature more than 1,200 custom-designed, patented nozzles. Each show runs 10 to 15 minutes and is choreographed to music — country, classic rock, classical, 80s rock, and more. The combination of moving water, colorful lights, and a good soundtrack makes every show feel a little different.

Where Are Wichita’s WaterWalk Fountains?

They’re located at 605 S. Wichita Street, near the Wichita Boathouse, east of Gander Mountain.

When Are the WaterWalk Fountains On?

The regular season runs May through October. Four shows take place Thursday through Sunday at 7 pm, 8 pm, 9 pm, and 10 pm. Each show is 10 to 15 minutes long.

One caveat that is very Wichita: the show will not run if winds exceed 15 miles per hour. Check before you go, especially in spring.

Always verify the current schedule on the City of Wichita’s Fountains page since times can change.

Is There Free Parking at the WaterWalk Fountains?

Free parking is usually available outside of the City’s paid parking hours, unless event parking rates are in effect. Public parking near the WaterWalk Fountains is available in the Gander Mountain parking garage, the WaterWalk parking garage off Main Street, and the open lot just west of the WaterWalk building. There’s also paid on-street parking along William Street and near Century II across from the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum. It’s just a short walk to the fountains from any of these locations.

Events at the WaterWalk Fountains and Nearby Attractions

The fountains pair perfectly with the Final Friday Food Truck Rally at the Boathouse, which happens right next door. They’re also a natural addition to a free or cheap date night in Wichita. While you’re in the area, look for the Paragon sculpture at the southwest corner of Main and Waterman — a striking steel and bronze spire by artist Albert Paley representing Wichita’s Native American heritage and aviation history, open 24/7.

After the sun goes down, the light and water effects make this one of those uniquely Wichita experiences that’s more fun than you’d expect, and one of the more photogenic spots in all of downtown, with the colorful reflections in the fountain pool and the city lights as your backdrop.

WOTC FUN FACTS about the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit:

• This exhibit is always FREE
• They have an indoor exhibit that houses smaller wildlife ambassadors. This exhibit is open only during Feeding Time and is worth checking out!
• The Zookeepers will be there for the FREE feeding at NOON daily and will answer questions. 
• After the feeding, find a caretaker to get special food to feed the fish in the pond for FREE.
• The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit was originally the city’s zoo until the Sedgwick County Zoo.
• It opened in 1988! There has been a zoo in one form or another on the site since 1901
• Many of the animals kept at the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit are used by the staff at the Great Plains Nature Center in programming.

The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit features over 25 species in 8 naturalistic cages. Animals include beaver, bobcat, hawks, turkey vulture, and a golden eagle. 

The exhibit is located in the central part of Riverside Park. The park’s address is 720 Nims, and the City of Wichita website has a map that should help you find it.

Riverside Park Zoo called the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit is FREE Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

Trail Tots takes place every Wednesday in September and October from 10 to 11 a.m. Each week, kids will head out on a guided half-mile walk along the Quail Trail with a different nature-centered activity or hands-on learning experience.

The program is designed especially for kids ages 2 to 10, although everyone is welcome. I love activities like this because kids get to explore, ask questions, move around, and learn about the world around them at the same time.

Top Outdoor Parks for Bike Riding in Wichita, Kansas

Not all parks are great for cyclists, but we’ve rounded up the top parks around town that offer a safe, pleasant place for the whole family to ride their bikes. Below that, we’ve collected information on longer bike trails for cycling enthusiasts that will keep you riding for miles and miles. Then, farther down, we’ve listed all the city parks the Department of Park & Recreation website says have designated bike trails, and we’ve grouped them conveniently so you can find a bike trail near your side of town.

Sedgwick County Park

One of the largest parks in Wichita, Sedgwick County Park, is a great place for safe bicycling. The bike path is 4.33 miles long. You can find a map of Sedgwick County’s bike path here.

You can bring your bicycles, but then spend the whole day at Sedgwick County Park. It has a boundless playground that offers space for everyone, regardless of physical mobility. Fishing ponds are available for those who have valid Kansas fishing licenses (not required for anyone under the age of 16). Big events like The Scottish Festival and Great Plains Renaissance Festival, WoofStock, car shows, and a variety of other events are also put on in this park.

Bike Paths in Derby, KS

Derby has more than 25 miles of Hike & Bike Path throughout the community. This path allows for safe transportation around the city for all ages and activity levels. The paths have been constructed in phases, with the first phase completed in 1997. There are periodic additions to the path as the city grows. 

The path connects major streets in Derby and includes paths through several parks, including High Park on the east side of Derby and Garrett Park on Derby’s south side.

Dedicated Wichita Bike Paths and Bike Trails

Arkansas River Bike Path

This one is possibly the most visible bike trails in the city of Wichita. The Arkansas River trail runs 10 miles from 21st N and West Street near I-235 and follows the river through the Downtown/Old Town/Delano part of town and ends in South City in Garvey Park at Washington and Galena. This is the bike path you can see when you’re at the Keeper of the Plains (or visiting the troll statue!).

K96 Bike Path / Chisholm Park Trail

While bikes (and dogs) are not allowed on the interior of this east Wichita nature area, they are free to use the bicycle path that goes around the outside of the park and ends at the Great Plains Nature Center. This is known as the K-96 bike path. You’ll find the entrance to this path off Oliver Street.

Once at the Great Plains Nature Center, you can secure your bike and visit the free displays inside the building or walk the pedestrian paths through Chisholm Creek Park.

Canal Hike and Bike Trail

McAdams Bike Path

This path connects the Canal Hike and Bike Trail to the K-96 Bicycle Path. The McAdams trail runs through the City of Wichita’s Chisholm Greenway, which connects Chisholm Park and Grove Park (aka Glen Dey Park).

Redbud Trail

This is an 11.5-mile-long trail in Wichita and its always FREE. It takes an average of 3 hours and 30 min to complete. It’s a trail that takes you through residential areas, churches, and parks. The trail is paved for the first 6 miles in Wichita, while much of the rest is surfaced with gravel or crushed limestone. FREE to enjoy!

Mountain Bike Paths and Singletrack Trails

Air Capital Memorial Park, which is part of Pawnee Prairie Park, has a wooded, 1.8 mile loop with challenging twists and turns. Helmets are required.

Cheney Lake Trail is a great trail for walking and according to the MTBProject it’s a family-friendly mountain biking trail too.

Prairie Sunset Trail is an 8-mile path from Goddard to Garden Plain through open fields.

Bike Trails in Wichita Kansas Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

Visitors are invited to the Vintage Market, held on the first Saturday of each month. These events feature local vendors from around the Wichita area. Additionally, the Official South Side Food Truck Rally takes place during the Market, offering attendees a chance to enjoy some great food while exploring the marketplace.

Some months, they have special themes. Keep scrolling for the dates and more info.

The vintage market is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features local small-business vendors for all things vintage, rustic, and shabby-chic.

The Southside food truck rally generally starts at 11 a.m. and the food trucks will be on-site until 2 pm on the same day at Blood Orchard.

About Blood Orchard in Wichita: 

• Location: 6346 S Broadway Ave, Wichita, KS, United States, Kansas
• They planted 2 acres of peaches planted in 2015 and have been planting more every year since. We also planted a small test plot of apples in 2018 that started producing apples in 2022.
• They started planting our U-Pick field in the spring of 2023. We currently have 1,325 peach trees growing in this field that will hopefully be big enough for the public to pick in 2025.
• They grow everything and sell on the same ground that their great-great-grandfather did.
• This land was once known as the peach capital of the world and was home to numerous peach orchards, with one of the most famous being Blood Orchard. Unfortunately, in 1984, the peach trees at Blood Orchard were contaminated by salt in the groundwater, ending over 100 years of fruitful harvests on the family-owned property. However, in 2015, the fifth generation began the process of replanting the orchard on the same land, starting with a small patch of test peach varieties. Since then, they have continued to replant, and today, the orchard boasts around 700 trees, with more being added each spring. The orchard now cultivates 13 different varieties of peaches, 7 varieties of apples, 5 varieties of cherries, and sandplums.
• For those interested in being part of the orchard’s history, there is an opportunity to help with the planting during the weekend in early March each year.

When is Winter Break for Wichita Public Schools? For 2026, it is from December 21 to January 4, 2027. The length of winter break can vary by a day or two every few years, depending on the day of the week the holidays fall on.

Open Street is one of my favorite community events. The city closes Douglas – one of our busiest streets – but it remains open to walkers, bikers, runners, and community activities. 

When is Open Streets ICT on Douglas? Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 12 -4 pm

Open Streets ICT is back, and this year’s event promises to be even more vibrant and walkable. Modeled after open street festivals across the country, Wichita will temporarily close traffic along a 2.5-mile stretch from Grove Street to Seneca Street, running straight through the historic Delano District.

By focusing on a slightly shorter route, the energy remains concentrated, making it easier for everyone to experience the event from start to finish. Instead of cars, the streets will be filled with people enjoying activities such as biking, walking, skating, yoga, dancing, music, art, food, and more.

Along the way, you’ll find live entertainment, local vendors, food trucks, and three big activity hubs, each offering family-friendly fun:

• Kennedy Plaza
• Naftzger Park
• East High School

With the hubs closer together, there’s something exciting to see and do around every corner—whether you’re strolling with the family, cruising on a bike, or rolling on skates.

What to expect at Open Streets ICT:

• The Wichita community can enjoy a leisurely ride along Douglas Avenue on bikes, skateboards, or on foot.
• Stop at one of the many activity hubs located on the road.

Labor Day Closings in Wichita

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer. If you’re planning to run errands or visit a Wichita attraction, you’ll want to check hours before heading out because several local offices, attractions, and services will be closed for the holiday.

The City of Wichita will close many of its facilities on Labor Day, including City Hall, Wichita Public Library locations, recreation centers, CityArts, Old Cowtown Museum, Wichita Art Museum, the Animal Shelter, and Brooks Landfill. There will also be no Wichita Transit or Paratransit service on Monday. Sedgwick County offices will also be closed.

But not everything is closed! Botanica, Golf Wichita, Ralph Wulz Riverside Tennis Center, and Wichita splash pads will be open regular hours. O.J. Watson Park will also be open but will close early at 5 pm, with the train, pony rides, and pedal boats closing at 4 pm.

Double-check before you head out, because things can change, and I can’t catch it all.

Kingman Cessna Fest Fall Festival

Hillsboro Arts & Craft Fair

• Time: 9 am – 4 pm (rain or shine)
• Location: Downtown Hillsboro (50 min North of Wichita)
• Each year, a committee of judges selects exhibitors from across the nation and invites them to bring their handcrafted products to Hillsboro for its nationally recognized craft show. These experts come from each coast to display and sell their handiwork and one-of-a-kind creations.
• Local food and hometown hospitality add flavor to this already spectacular event. There’s something for every palate, everything from Hillsboro’s famous smoked sausage, zwieback, and bierocks to kettle corn, roasted almonds, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and funnel cakes.

New Market Square Fall Festival
