Overall, Topgolf provides a modern and entertaining twist to the traditional golf experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide audience. We recently went to our friend Ella’s birthday, and the kids and adults had a blast.

However, as entertaining as this facility can be, it can also get quite expensive. As your budget-friendly lady, here is my guide to playing Topgolf in a way that won’t empty those (plaid or houndstooth) pant pockets!

One of the coolest things about Topgolf is the technology. Every golf ball contains a microchip that tracks where your shot lands, automatically keeping score while you play interactive games. There are games designed for beginners, competitive golfers, and kids, so everyone can join in regardless of skill level. You don’t even need your own clubs because they provide them free of charge.

If you’ve never been, don’t let the word “golf” scare you away. I know plenty of people who go just for the food, drinks, and atmosphere. It’s one of those places that’s just as much about spending time with family and friends as it is hitting golf balls.

Yes, you read that right! Half-Price games are half price Monday – Thursday for a limited time. No codes to remember or coupons, but you must book online.

Family Picnic at Fulton Valley Farms: Free Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

This event combines three incredible experiences into one unforgettable experience. The festival offers breathtaking views of 500 synchronized drones, fully choreographed to music. This is 100 more drones than last year, and for the first time ever, they are adding pyro drones, bringing bursts of light and special effects to the performance.

The show is paired with a live soundtrack performed by a string quartet led by former Wichita Symphony Orchestra concertmaster John Harrison, creating a one-of-a-kind blend of music, technology and storytelling.

Exploration Place hosted its first drone festival a couple of years ago, and it was a huge success. We love attending this event and can’t wait to go again this year. I highly recommend it—it offers so much for the price! You get to see the show, explore the museum, listen to live music, and enjoy the entire kids’ area.

Returning by popular demand in 2026, the Drone Light Show will once again feature a live musical score performed by a string quartet led by John Harrison. Watching 500 drones dance across the night sky while live musicians perform creates an unforgettable experience. New this year, the addition of pyro drones takes the show to the next level, making this one of Wichita’s most unique and spectacular summer events.

Relax beneath the shade of the beautiful trees at Picnic Grove, located in the heart of the Adventure Playscape. Local Wichita musician Trevor Stewart will perform live on the Chapman Stick, creating the perfect atmosphere before the Drone Light Show begins. Free Laser Show in the Dome

Fans of KPop Demon Hunters won’t want to miss this free experience! Throughout the evening, Exploration Place will offer free screenings of the popular Laser KPop Demon Hunters show inside the Dome theater. Sing along to the award-winning soundtrack as colorful laser lights bring the music to life in an unforgettable show.

Showtimes are at 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, and 8:00 p.m. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to line up at the Dome entrance a little early if you’d like to catch a show.

Boulevard Theatres is a locally owned movie theater chain based in Wichita, Kansas, founded in 2021 by Tyler Cooper and Ryan Blasdel. Where to Get School Supplies & Their Perks

Target Back-to-School Deals

Target is one of my favorite places to shop for back-to-school deals because they offer great prices (this year one of the best prices) on both name-brand and store-brand supplies. Their Mondo Llama brand is often about half the price of name brands. For example, a 24-count box of Crayola crayons is around $0.50, while Target’s Mondo Llama crayons are just $0.25.

This year, Target is advertising savings of up to 60% on school supplies through August 29.

Pro Tip: After clicking the sale link on their website, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. That’s where you’ll usually find many of the best back-to-school deals and lowest-priced supplies.

One of the easiest ways I save money is by choosing Mondo Llama whenever I can. We’ve had great luck with the quality, and I can stock up on notebooks, folders, markers, colored pencils, glue, and other classroom essentials for much less than buying the name brands.

Target is also one of my go-to stores for affordable school clothes. During back-to-school season, they often have kids’ graphic and basic T-shirts starting around $5 and jeans for about $10, making it easy to update your child’s wardrobe without overspending.

Dillons Back to School Deals

Dillons continues to be a great option for back-to-school shopping, especially if you’re already planning a grocery trip. This year, they’re featuring more than 250 school supplies priced under $5, making it easy to pick up the basics while doing your regular shopping.

One of the biggest perks of shopping at Dillons is earning Fuel Points. If you already fill up at Dillons Fuel Centers, buying your school supplies there can help you save at the pump, adding even more value to your purchase.

Through July 21, you can also save $10 when you spend $30 or more on school supplies with pickup or delivery orders, making it an even better time to stock up.

Pro Tip: Look for store or merchant coupons in the app or on the weekly ad.

This time of year, grocery stores have sales school lunch items. Stock up and freeze lunch meat, cheese sticks, and more to have inexpensive lunches for the next few months!

Dillons School Supplies

Walmat Back to School Supply Deals

Walmart is one of the best places to stretch your budget. You’ll find low prices on everything from notebooks and backpacks to lunch boxes, clothing, and classroom supplies. Keep an eye out for Walmart’s Rollback prices, which are temporary price reductions on select items that help you save even more during the school shopping season. Unlike clearance items, Rollbacks are available while supplies last and can include both everyday essentials and popular name brands.

Pro Tip: As a mom, Walmart’s Pen+Gear is one of my go-to brands for back-to-school shopping because the prices are hard to beat. I can usually pick up all the essentails without spending a fortune. Walmart is also one of my favorite places to shop for school uniforms, with affordable polos, pants, shorts, and skirts that hold up well throughout the school year. It’s an easy way to check off both the school supply list and the uniform list while keeping a little extra money in your wallet.

Walgreens Back to School Supplies

Walgreens is another place to check for back-to-school supplies, but overall it’s the most expensive of the major retailers. Right now, they’re offering a Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off Mix & Match promotion on select school supplies, which can help lower the cost if you’re buying multiple items.

Pro Tip: Even with the BOGO sale, Walgreens’ regular prices are generally much higher than Target or Walmart. They also don’t offer low-cost store brands like Mondo Llama or Pen+Gear, so it’s harder to find the rock-bottom prices available elsewhere.

A few years ago, Walgreens was one of my favorite places to shop for school supplies. Every week they seemed to have a handful of items at unbelievably low prices, and if you paired those sales with coupons, you could score some incredible deals.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case this year. So far, we haven’t seen the deep discounts that made Walgreens a back-to-school shopping destination in the past. Unless you’re already making a trip there or can take advantage of the Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off promotion, you’ll likely find better overall prices at Target or Walmart.

Amazon Back to School Supplies

Amazon can be a convenient option for back-to-school shopping, especially if you prefer having everything delivered to your door. It offers an enormous selection of everything. It’s also a great place to shop for bulk supplies if you have multiple children or are helping stock a teacher’s classroom. If you’re a Prime member, the fast, free shipping is another nice bonus.

That said, Amazon isn’t always the cheapest place to buy basic school supplies. During back-to-school season, stores like Target and Walmart often beat Amazon’s prices on everyday items like notebooks, crayons, glue, folders, and pencils. Amazon’s prices also change frequently, so an item that’s a great deal today could cost more tomorrow.

I usually use Amazon to fill in the gaps after I’ve shopped the local sales. If I can’t find a specific item in stores, need a specialty product, or want to buy supplies in bulk, Amazon is often my first stop. But for the everyday basics on a school supply list, I typically find the best overall prices at Target or Walmart. My advice is to shop the local sales first, then check Amazon for anything that’s still on your list.

Five Below Back to School

Five Below can be a fun stop during back-to-school shopping, especially if you’re looking beyond the basics. While it’s not usually the best place to buy items on your school’s supply list, it offers great deals on backpacks, water bottles, lunch accessories, headphones, planners, room décor, and other trendy school essentials.

I also like Five Below for locker decorations, teacher gifts, and inexpensive rewards for kids heading back to school. Many items are priced at $5 or less, although some products in the Five Beyond section cost a little more.

For the actual classroom supplies like notebooks, crayons, glue, folders, and pencils, you’ll usually find better prices at Target or Walmart. I think of Five Below as a great “extras” store rather than a place to buy everything on your school supply list. If your child wants a fun water bottle, colorful backpack accessories, or a few items to make heading back to school more exciting, it’s definitely worth a stop.

Costco vs. Sam’s Club for School Supplies

Overall, I’d give the edge to Sam’s Club for back-to-school shopping.

Sam’s Club typically carries a larger selection of school supplies during the season, including multipacks of notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, markers, tissues, paper towels, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, snacks, and lunchbox items. They also tend to have a wider variety of backpacks and lunch bags at competitive prices.

Costco usually has fewer school supply options, but the quality is excellent. It’s a great place to buy name-brand items like Sharpie, Expo, Scotch, Post-it, and Ticonderoga in larger quantities. Costco also shines when it comes to snacks, juice boxes, granola bars, fruit cups, and other lunchbox staples.

Neither warehouse club is usually the cheapest place to buy a single notebook or box of crayons. During back-to-school season, Target and Walmart almost always beat them on those individual items thanks to their aggressive sales.

Where Costco and Sam’s Club really become a good value is when you’re buying in bulk. If you have several children, are splitting supplies with family or friends, or need classroom supplies for a teacher, the larger packages often bring the cost per item down.

My strategy is to buy the basic school supply list at Target or Walmart, then stop at Sam’s Club or Costco for the bulk items I’ll use all year, like tissues, paper towels, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, printer paper, snacks, and lunchbox drinks.

Bottom line:

• Best for school supplies: Sam’s Club
• Best for name-brand bulk items and lunchbox foods: Costco
• Best overall prices on individual school supplies: Target and Walmart

Our family has visited several of these water playgrounds over the past few summers. They’re perfect for a fun, spontaneous (and FREE) summer outing when the kids need something to do. Tip: water shoes are a good idea to avoid slipping and/or stepping in (or on) something you’d rather not.

This prairie-themed water playground has native limestone, sculptural grass-like overhead sprayers and an assortment of ground jets.  A buffalo head sculpture that sprays and mists water welcomes patrons to the plaza, which has a colored concrete pattern inspired by the grass seeds of the prairie.  Native grasses surround the area. In addition to the fun water spray area, Buffalo park has an outdoor open shelter and picnic tables, a circular drop-off area, and restrooms.*Note that half of the shelter can be rented out on the weekends so please make sure you park your items on the other side if it seems that there is a party going on in the other side. 

Edgemoor Park Splash Park

East Wichita

Location: 5815 E 9th St N, Wichita, KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

The old Edgemoor Park pool was turned into a new water playground/splash park in the city of Wichita.

Evergreen Park Splash Pad

Northwest Wichita

Location: 2700 Woodland N, Wichita, KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This new splashpad gives off aztec vibes or flashbacks to the 90’s Nickelodeon show Legends of the Hidden Temple (who remembers this show?!). A little on the smaller side so I suggest trying to avoid this location on the weekends. 

Fairmount Splash Park

East Wichita

Location: 1647 N. Yale St., Wichita, KS 67218

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This splash park seems to be a carbon copy of the Osage feature. It also has impressive creature splash fountain features and colorful rings to run through. Again, lots of opportunity for cute photos opps of your kiddos as they run around. Fountains are open in the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Lincoln Park Splash Pad

South Wichita

Location: 1323 S. Topeka

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

This park’s splash pad is really more of a small area with interactive fountains spraying from the concrete floor. Great fun for kiddos to run through as they are playing on the playground but not a place I suggest venturing to with swim getups and water toys. 

Linwood South Park  – Will not be open for the 2025 Season

South East Wichita

Location: 1901 S Kansas, Wichita KS

Hours: Closed for 2025

This splash park is one that the city replaces a run-down city pool with. This splash park is much more than just a few fountains shooting water out of the ground.  It has really cool water features, bright play equipment, and lots of shade. I highly recommend visiting this one, this summer! 

Old Town Plaza Splash Park

Downtown Wichita

Location: 301 N. Mead, Wichita KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

These fountains are in the center of Old Town Square in downtown Wichita. Being that this is in the middle of the city plaza this is not a location where you camp out for very long, nor is it a location to where swimming suits. It is, however, a fun area for kids to run through a few times to cool off in the heat of summer.  The Old Town fountain is open from 10 a.m. to noon daily.

Osage Splash Park

South East Wichita

Location: 2121 W. 31st Street South, Wichita KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

One of the most impressive splash parks in Wichita, this interactive fountain features playful creatures spouting water and colorful rings for kids to run through. There are lots of opportunities for cute photo ops of your kiddos as they run around. The fountains are open in the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Plainview Park

South Wichita

Location: 2819 Fees

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

Riverside Central Park Water Playground

North Wichita Close to Downtown

Location: 720 Nims, Wichita KS

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

In the heart of Wichita, this fountain is near the free wildlife exhibit in Riverside Park. 

Picnic tables surrounding the area and frequently shaded to allow you to take a break from the heat. Spray fountains are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily during the summer.

W.B. Harrison Park

Southeast Wichita

Location: 1300 S Webb Road

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm

The design of the splash pad is centered around a scorpion that shoots out water. The splash pad is open from 10 am to 8 pm daily during the summer season. 

New Market Square Fountains

West Wichita

Location: 21st Street North & Maize Road

These fountains are in front of Old Navy/Dress Barn, and are usually on every day from approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., off during inclement weather.

Splash Pads in Surrounding Areas

13th Street Sports Park in Andover

Location: 1008 E. 13th St, Andover, KS

The Andover Sports Park opened in 2024 and features baseball, softball, and pickleball courts, a park, a splash park, and more.

Tanganyika Falls Splash Park

Admission Fee is Required

Location: 1000 S Hawkins Ln, Goddard, KS 67052

Tanganyika Wildlife Park’s splash pad opened in 2020 and is free for season pass-holders and paying visitors. This splash park is quite impressive containing multiple tall fountains, water buckets, and ground bubble fountains. If you plan to visit Tanganyika this summer, I suggest having your kiddos spend some time cooling off in this new park feature!

Maize Splash Pad

Location: 401 Khedive, Maize KS

Hours: The pad typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes on Labor Day weekend and is open from 9 AM to 8 PM

This splash pad in located in Maze Ks. There are picnic tables, benches, and awnings for some shade. The city added new picnic tables under new awings to expand the splashpad park! If you get there and the water isn’t on, look for a button on a pole. That starts it going!

Derby’s Madison Avenue Central Park

Location: 512 E. Madison Ave., Derby, KS

Derby has a free splash pad in Madison Avenue Central Park, with shaded seating areas and an all-access playground nearby.

Fred A. Cohlmia Park, Haysville Splash Pad

Location: 525 Sarah Ln, Haysville, KS

The splash pad in Haysville is just outside the swimming pool area. It opens in May and usually remains open until October. Hours: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Lights go on automatically 9:15 p.m.

McLaughlin Park Splash Park & Lion’s Park Splash Park in Valley Center

Location: 716 McLaughlin, Valley Center KS

Hours: 10 am – 9 pm from Memorial Day to October 1st (or the first freeze)

Valley Center has a free splash pad in McLaughlin Park.

Robert Shryock Park in Augusta, KS

Location: 2923 Ohio St. #2829, Augusta KS

Hours: 10 am – 8 pm from Memorial Day to the second Monday in September

The Augusta splash pad is near Augusta City Lake and – like the nearby playground – has a fairy tale theme. It seems worth the trip to allow your little one to explore! 

Avenue A Water Park in Hutchinson, KS

Location: 100 S Main St, Hutchison. The corner of Washington Street and Avenue A in downtown Hutchinson

Hours: Open from Memorial day through mid-August.

Fairgrounds Water Park in Hutchinson

If you want to start from the beginning, go to the Kansas State Treasurer’s website and click on the “Search Now” link.

After you have entered your name and read the disclaimer, a list of names will appear. (Or it will show that nothing was found. Bummer!) If any of the claims match your address and description, you can add up to 30 properties into a virtual shopping cart.

At checkout, you will be asked to provide a little more information, such as your driver’s license number and email address. Depending on the type of claim, you may be able to fill out a paperless form or choose to have the state of Kansas mail paper forms to your address to fill out and return.

If you want more personal service or have questions the website cannot answer, you can also call the Kansas State Treasury Department at 785-296-4165.

In addition, if you have checked this website before, it never hurts to check it again. I personally have never had my name on the list until this year. What a fun surprise!

Wichita has one Costco location that many locals rely on for groceries, gas, and bulk household items. For my family, the cheaper gas alone almost pays for our membership each year. If I can help it, I try to fill up there every time.

My Uncle Ken should honestly be a Costco spokesperson. He and my Aunt Sara used to travel and would purposely stop in cities just to visit a Costco. It became a running joke in our family whenever someone complimented something in their house. Someone would ask, “Guess where it’s from?” and the answer was almost always… Costco.

You have an opportunity to save big and still get your kids all the school supplies they need. Just pay attention to the pennies here. They add up!

If you’ve ever left the checkout lane at a discount store wondering how you could have just spent hundreds of dollars, then you’ve experienced firsthand how rapidly small amounts can turn into large amounts.

Well, it works in reverse, too. That .59 cents you save by using a coupon or shopping at a particular store will add up, pennies at a time, to significant savings.

Here are some of my best tips for saving on school supplies:

Don’t buy everything at once

This is the biggest tip I can give you. To save the most money on school supplies, start your shopping in mid-July and go every week until sometime in August.  If you live in a rural area, you might not be able to do that because you’d spend more in gas than you save on supplies. But if you live or work in town, it’s definitely worth making a weekly stop at the various stores.

Don’t shop the Dollar Stores

It seems counterintuitive, but when school supply sales are going on the dollar stores don’t have the best deals. Why pay $1.25 for a notebook when you could get it for 35 cents? (Same is true of “two-for-a-dollar deals.” Off brand crayons for .50 cents per box isn’t as good a deal as Crayola crayons for 50 cents.) Take a look at the school supply price list linked below to get an idea of what you should be paying for school supplies this time of year.

Don’t buy everything

I love the smell of new books, the anticipation of opening up a brand new pack of pens, and the sight of colorful new 3-ring binders more than the average person. But the truth is that if we want to spend less on supplies, we have to actually buy less. Almost every household has perfectly good school supplies sitting around unused, maybe left over from last year, that will go a long way toward fulfilling this year’s list. Once you’ve convinced yourself, it’s time to convince the kids.

So right now at least a few of you are thinking that your child will never agree to reusing last year’s pencil box. I hear you, so I’ll let you in on my big secret.

Give each of your kids a certain amount of money for school supplies and the list of basic supplies they need to buy with that money. Then tell them they can keep whatever is left over. You’ll be surprised at how attractive last year’s backpack starts to look.

And suddenly you’ll have a bunch of little helpers looking at the ads each week. Of course, one of the rules is that everything on the list has to be present and accounted for (whether purchased, repurposed, reused, or pulled out of the dumpster — ha, I’m kidding) before school starts.

Follow Your List

School supply lists are available for most districts in Wichita now. Print the list and bring it with you every time you go shopping. And then follow the list. It’s easy to be lured in to buying a Limited Edition four-wheeled Disney backpack with detachable water bottle and matching iPhone case, but it’s a waste of money if your child’s school doesn’t allow wheeled backpacks.

Watch the sales

You probably already know that stores often mark prices on certain items waaaay down to get you in the store. The stores lose money on these loss-leaders to get you into the store where, they hope, you’ll decide to just finish off your shopping list. I have nothing against that, because school supply shopping is like a big, fun, traditional spending spree for some people. It was for me and my mom.

But I’ve made this time of year into a big, fun, traditional savings spree. We watch the sales flyers each week, gather our quarters and our school supply list and see how little we can spend to get the things we need. (The “fun” aspect for the child is dreaming of all the ways he or she will spend the leftover money.)

I’ve paid as little as one penny for rulers, loose-leaf notebook paper, mechanical pencils, ballpoint pens, and more; I’ve gotten name-brand goodies like crayons, markers, and highlighters for .25 cents each.

We’ll see what happens this year, but I’ve noticed fewer weekly sales and more “season-long low prices.”

Either way, try to find sale flyers to help you decide where you’re going to spend your time and money this week. Sometimes you hit the jackpot–the loss leaders at one store make up the majority of items on your list, and you can get a lot of shopping done in one trip. Other times you go into a store for a 25-cent pack of pencils, and that’s all you leave with.

But once a sale is advertised, don’t wait too long. The best deals do sometimes sell out. Thank goodness some merchants put a limit on the number of items you can buy at sale price. That way, there’s enough for everyone!

Here are the stores in/around Wichita that I most often check for school supply deals: 

• Dillon’s
• Walgreens
• Target
• Walmart
• Menards
• Office Depot
• Five Below
• Ollie’s

Walmart really does generally have the lowest prices overall, but Dillon’s and Target really give them a run for their money. And sales at the other stores can sometimes save you even more money on single items (like a pack of pencils, dry-erase markers, paper towels or wipes, etc.)

Use the Unit Price

When you’re comparing prices on a package of pens, pencils, etc. and you really want to know if you’re getting a deal, divide the package price by the number of items in the pack to come up with the unit price. 

This is most helpful when shopping for supplies in bulk. I can’t just glance at, say, a 200-pack of Ticonderoga pencils at Sam’s Club or Costco and tell you if it’s a good deal. I have to do the math. 

Save on Big Ticket Items

It’s great to save .30 cents on a pack of markers, but isn’t it even better to save 30 dollars on a backpack, school uniforms, or a graphing calculator?

Yeah! So beginning in July, start looking at prices on either your favorite brands or at your favorite stores so that you can easily spot a deal when they start their back-to-school promotions.

For sanity’s sake, try to limit the stores and or brands you watch. For example, if you know you like the quality of a certain brand of school uniform, watch for deals on that brand. (If you’re brand-loyal, you’ll probably already know which stores carry that brand. If not, a quick internet search will tell you.)

Also, sign up for promotional emails from that brand.

Backpacks can be so expensive! And in my experience, the quality can vary widely. Did you pay an exorbitant amount on a backpack last year because you reasoned that it would last more than one year? Now is the time to give it a good overall inspection to see if it can hold up for another year.

Not buying a new backpack is the easiest way of all to save money on back-to-school. Some backpacks even have lifetime warranties, so before you replace yours with a new one, see if you can get it repaired for free.

Discount and Outlet Stores

One year I paid $10 for a backpack at Ollies, but the zipper broke within a couple of months. The next backpack came from Marshall’s, and it lasted for two years! It was a well-known brand and of good quality. I think I paid $15, if I remember correctly, so it was definitely a great deal.

Summer Clearance

In Kansas, school starts when it’s still hot outside, and it usually stays hot well into October, so when it comes to buying the kids new clothes for school, remember that you can hold off on the winter sweaters and long pants (unless the school doesn’t allow shorts).

A perfect way to save money on school clothes is to shop the summer clearance. That way, kids get new clothes, and you get good deals.

Computers and device sales

For technology items, the sales don’t get a lot better than around this time of year.

Before you shop, know your specs!

Yes, you can find a laptop for under $300, but a Chromebook might be even cheaper and sufficient for the task. Know how much memory you need, what size and type of hard drive you want, how large or small it should be, what peripherals the item will work with, etc.

The same is true for calculators. Teachers may have specific requirements for those, and you often won’t find out what they are until after school starts.

For a scientific calculator, you should only spend in the neighborhood of $10. Graphing calculators are often closer to $100, so before you drop that amount, make sure the one you’re looking at will meet school requirements.

Watch out for Deals that Aren’t Deals

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that “the really great deals” are at the discount or dollar stores.  Um… I haven’t seen that to be the case at all. (That’s why I gave this is own section up above!) While the dollar stores can be great places to find deals, I get the best deals on school supplies from the traditionally expensive stores.

The whole key is actually knowing (not assuming) you’re getting a great deal. Use my weekly school supply deals or the school supply price list to compare prices and ensure you’re getting a good deal.

Another mistake to avoid is thinking everything in a store’s weekly ad is a great deal. A recent example was a box of colored pencils “on sale” at an office supply store for $1. The same pencils (same brand, everything) were .90 cents every day of the week at another store across the street.  Doing a teensy bit of scrolling on my list reveals that, so please use it and save yourself some money.

Don’t Fret if you Paid Too Much

I speak from personal experience: It can be so frustrating to buy something for .50 cents only to see it on sale the next week for five cents. But the bottom line is that if you’re watching the sales, using coupons, following your list, and checking prices, you are going to save money, and your kids are going to have the school supplies they need. Enjoy the time spent with them, and don’t cry over a missed deal.

The McDonald’s app is a mobile app that lets users order food, customize their meals, and take advantage of promotions and discounts from McDonald’s. 

Free Fries Friday all year! Download the McDonald’s app and create an account. You’ll be prompted to take advantage of the Free Fry deal on any Friday. This deal can also be found under the Deal tab.

Things to know about McDonald’s Free Fry Friday: 

• This offer is limited to one per day.
• You must purchase something worth at least $1.
• You won’t be able to use any other deals available in the app that day.

Visitors are invited to the Vintage Market, held on the first Saturday of each month. These events feature local vendors from around the Wichita area. Additionally, the Official South Side Food Truck Rally takes place during the Market, offering attendees a chance to enjoy some great food while exploring the marketplace.

The vintage market is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features local small-business vendors for all things vintage, rustic, and shabby-chic.

The Southside food truck rally generally starts at 11 a.m. and the food trucks will be on-site until 2 pm on the same day at Blood Orchard.

About Blood Orchard in Wichita: 

• Location: 6346 S Broadway Ave, Wichita, KS, United States, Kansas
• They planted 2 acres of peaches planted in 2015 and have been planting more every year since. We also planted a small test plot of apples in 2018 that started producing apples in 2022.
• They started planting our U-Pick field in the spring of 2023. We currently have 1,325 peach trees growing in this field that will hopefully be big enough for the public to pick in 2025.
• They grow everything and sell on the same ground that their great-great-grandfather did.
• This land was once known as the peach capital of the world and was home to numerous peach orchards, with one of the most famous being Blood Orchard. Unfortunately, in 1984, the peach trees at Blood Orchard were contaminated by salt in the groundwater, ending over 100 years of fruitful harvests on the family-owned property. However, in 2015, the fifth generation began the process of replanting the orchard on the same land, starting with a small patch of test peach varieties. Since then, they have continued to replant, and today, the orchard boasts around 700 trees, with more being added each spring. The orchard now cultivates 13 different varieties of peaches, 7 varieties of apples, 5 varieties of cherries, and sandplums.
• For those interested in being part of the orchard’s history, there is an opportunity to help with the planting during the weekend in early March each year.

The monthly event starts at 5 p.m. on the last Friday and continues until 10 p.m. Live music typically plays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This event runs from March to October and allows people to come together, socialize, and connect with their community. Whether you’re with friends and family or meeting new people, the lively atmosphere of a food truck rally encourages interaction and conversation. This is great for our Wichita community; if you haven’t been, I highly recommend it. 

Most Final Friday Food Truck Rallies have 20+ food trucks.

This is an outdoor event, and a neat bonus to that is the near the Waltzing Waters fountains – aka the Fountains at Waterwalk – to the Wichita Boathouse.

Wichita Food Truck rallies typically feature diverse culinary options, from gourmet burgers and tacos to specialty desserts and ethnic cuisines. This variety ensures something for everyone, catering to different tastes and preferences. This is great to keep everyone happy in your group.

WaterWalk Fountains

If the Waterwalk Fountains are running, it’s fun to see and right next to the Food Truck Rally! The show is about 10—to 15 minutes long and incorporates music, lights, and water in a choreographed display to different genres of music, including country, classic rock, classical, and 80s rock. The fountains are located at 605 S Wichita Street, neat the Wichita Boathouse. They fountains are 150 feet long and have more than 1,200 custom-designed and patented nozzles.

Please note: Fountains do not operate when winds exceed 15 miles per hour.

Waterwalk Fountain Schedule:

• The regular fountain season runs from May through October.
• Five shows occur Thursday through Sunday at 7 pm, 8 pm, 9 pm, and 10 pm.
• Each show is 10 to 15 minutes long.
• Double-check the Waterwalk Fountain Hours because they do change them often. 

Overall, the combination of delicious food, social interaction, outdoor ambiance, and support for local businesses makes gathering at a community food truck rally a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Who is Paying for the Sunflower Summer Program?

The Kansas State Department of Education provides this program through a grant funded by Elementary and Secondary Education Emergency Relief (ESSER) from the American Rescue Plan Act. This is all information from the Sunflower Summer website, which you can see here. 

Sunflower Summer is FREE to Kansas students and their families.

The website, sunflowersummer.org, has a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a video overview of the program. Exploration Place announced it would host FREE Movies this year from April to October, excluding September 25 due to the Drone Festival, for 25 weeks of completely free Friday night fun for all ages.

This is the perfect way to spend quality time with loved ones without spending a dime! I can just imagine my family sitting on a blanket by the Arkansas River, with the Keeper of the Plains in the background, enjoying a family-friendly film.

  • You will be sitting on turf in the theater, so I recommend bringing a blanket or cushion.
  • There will be very limited space around the amphitheater bowl for lawn chairs, so you may not be able to set up your chair if you bring it. If you want a lawn chair, I will go early.
• Will there be Food at RiverFlix?
  • Yes, you can purchase food from local food trucks, or you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks, which I absolutely love!
    • Bringing your food is a fantastic way to keep the cost of a family night out low. A free movie and the convenience of enjoying the food you already have—there’s no better or more affordable way to have a fun night out! While Wichita may not have a large-scale standalone aquarium attraction, families don’t have to travel far to enjoy aquatic experiences. In fact, there are some great budget-friendly options right here in town.

The aquarium inside SCHEELS at Towne East Square is a fun (and completely free) stop. Kids love watching the fish, and parents love that it doesn’t cost a dime. While you’re there, families can also take advantage of the free Indoor Play Area in the store, making it easy to turn a quick stop into a full afternoon outing without spending much at all.

Scheels Wichita (Free)

Wichita families can also find aquatic exhibits at the Sedgwick County Zoo. While it’s not an aquarium, the zoo features several water-focused habitats and marine-inspired exhibits that give kids a chance to explore underwater life without leaving town. Watching for discount days, memberships, or seasonal promotions can make this an especially smart value.

For families wanting a larger-scale aquarium experience, several excellent options are still within a manageable drive. Road trips often cost far less than airfare and can still feel like a big adventure. By purchasing tickets online, looking for combo passes, visiting during off-peak times, and turning longer drives into overnight stays, Wichita families can make these aquarium getaways both memorable and budget-friendly.

Aquariums in Kansas City

For one of the closest options, SEA LIFE Kansas City is about a 2.5–3 hour drive from Wichita at 2475 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri 64108. Located at Crown Center, it’s easy to pair with other nearby attractions like Legoland, Kaleidoscope (FREE), and our family favorite, Fritz’s Restaurant in Crown Center, where trains deliver your food. Families love the 360-degree ocean tunnel and interactive touch pools. Buying tickets online in advance typically saves money, and combo tickets for nearby attractions can stretch your budget even further.

Another Kansas City option is the Sobela Ocean Aquarium at 6800 Zoo Drive, Kansas City, MO 64132. Also about a 2.5–3 hour drive from Wichita, this aquarium is located inside the Kansas City Zoo. It’s a great choice if your family wants to see both zoo animals and marine life on one trip. Since aquarium access is included with zoo admission, you get more value for your ticket price. Planning a full day there helps maximize the cost of gas and admission.

Aquariums in Oklahoma

Heading south, Blue Zoo Oklahoma City at 2501 W Memorial Rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73134 is about a 2.5 hour drive from Wichita. It’s smaller but very interactive, which makes it especially fun for younger kids who love hands-on experiences. Shark and stingray feedings are highlights. Watching for weekday pricing or seasonal promotions can help lower admission costs.

About three hours away in Jenks, Oklahoma, is the Jenks Aquarium at 300 Aquarium Drive. It’s known for its impressive shark tunnel and one of the largest collections of bull sharks in the world. The size makes it very manageable for a single-day trip without feeling rushed. Planning your visit during off-peak times and packing snacks for the drive are simple ways to keep the total trip budget-friendly.

If your family prefers something smaller and more education-focused, the Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center at 1 Aquarium Drive, Medicine Park, OK 73557 is about 3.5 hours from Wichita. Admission is typically more affordable than the larger aquariums, and you can easily pair it with outdoor exploring in the Medicine Park area to make the drive worthwhile.

Aquariums in Missouri

For a bigger experience, Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium in Springfield, Missouri, at 500 W Sunshine St, is about four hours away and another family favorite. This is a large, immersive aquarium experience with themed environments, penguins, shark tunnels, and extensive exhibits. It is priced higher than smaller aquariums, so planning an overnight stay and buying tickets online in advance can help make the most of the investment. The Aquarium at the Boardwalk at 2700 76 Country Blvd, Branson, MO 65616 is about 4.5 hours from Wichita. It’s colorful, creative, and easy to combine with a Branson getaway. Families enjoy the fun design elements and compact layout. Looking for bundled Branson attraction passes can lower overall entertainment costs.

The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station at 201 S 18th St, St. Louis, MO 63103 is about 6.5 hours away. Located inside historic Union Station, it makes a great addition to a St. Louis family trip. Watching for combo tickets with nearby attractions can help reduce overall costs.

Also, about 4.5 hours away, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium at 3701 S 10th St, Omaha, NE 68107, is often considered one of the best zoo and aquarium experiences in the country. If you plan to visit any Wichita museums or attractions where you don’t have a membership, take advantage of the Visit Wichita (Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau) Explore Card.

It’s FREE and will save you up to $22 per person per year! (There’s a new attraction listed this year!)

Wichita Explore Card

You can pick up a free Explore Card at the Visit Wichita office at 515 S. Main St., Suite 115, or simply pay full price at the first participating attraction you visit and ask for one there. The card gives you a $2 discount on admission for each person on your first visit to every participating attraction, and staff will punch the card as you go. It’s valid through the end of the year, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the savings at multiple Wichita attractions without needing to make a special trip downtown if you don’t want to.

The Wichita Explore Card – Save $2 on admission to many Wichita area attractions Wichita on the Cheap - Living the Good Life for Less

Several years ago, termite damage was discovered that caused structural concerns. Volunteers tore down the park and completely rebuilt it, making it even better. Castle Park is now made of plastic composite wood, so all can enjoy it for many years to come. The park reopened in June of 2024.

What makes this Castle Park so special? For me, it’s the unique castle theme, unlike any other park I’ve visited. I also love that the park is next to the beautiful Augusta City Lake. The lake spans approximately 190 acres with four miles of accessible shoreline. Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, kayaking, biking, and jogging in this picturesque setting.

Next to Castle Park and the Lake is the Robert Shryock Splash Pad. This water park has a fairytale-themed play area with water baskets you can run under, shoot water out of dragons, and more. It is usually open from Memorial Day in May to the second Monday in September and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and it’s FREE!

Pro Tip: This is one of my favorite splash pads because it has big umbrellas to provide shade, and you can enjoy the beautiful view of Augusta City Lake. Visit our list of Splash Pads in and around Wichita.

There’s also a fantastic play area for the little ones, and I really appreciate that it’s fenced in for their safety.

Location: 113 E. 6th St. Augusta, KS – Castle Park and the Splash Pad share a parking lot.

Cost of the new Castle Park: The Castle Park Team shattered the fundraising roof with over $470,000 in donations!! Their original goal was $300,000, but with a growing budget, they exceeded their expectations. Thank you to the City Council who voted to add an additional $300,000 plus any surface expenses that might exceed the initial budget.

Nothing beats a night out at the movies, especially when it’s at the Tallgrass Film Center! Whether you’re a hardcore movie buff or a casual fan, you’ll surely enjoy the film-viewing experience there. So stop by and enjoy a movie!

More About The Tallgrass Film Center:

• Anyone is welcome to attend a film.
• They provide a full-servie concession stand with popcorn, candy, beer, hard seltzers, Pepsi soft drinks, and water.
• The Theater has 30 seats, 2K digital projection, and 5.1 digital sound.
• Where to park: The LUX, located in Downtown Wichita at 1st St. and Market (1st St. is a one-way street heading East, and Market is a one-way street heading North) has a variety of parking available. There is street parking available on both 1st St. and Market; street parking is free on weekends and after 5 pm on weekdays. Otherwise, it is free within 2 hours or 1-hour limits or metered depending on the spot (between 8a-5p Mon-Fri). There are also a couple of nearby parking lots that are okay to park in on weekends and evenings after 5pm.
• They recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to a film’s start time so you have time to get your ticket, purchase concessions, find a seat, get comfy, and turn off your phone. We don’t have 30 minutes of trailers like at a larger theater.

General Tips for Saving Money on Groceries:

These tips might not work for all families, but here are some suggestions.

• Ignore eye-level items
  • The more expensive items are at eye level. Look up and down to save $! 
• Pay with a grocery rewards card.
  • Like the Dillons Plus card 
• Leave the kids at home! If you have kids. 
• Know when to shop
  • Many experts say it’s cheaper to do your food shopping on Wednesday. That’s because they restock midweek and do markdowns. 
• Make a meal plan with a grocery list, and stick to it.
  • Making a budget will always save you money. 
• Buy whole fruit and cut it yourself.
  • Also, don’t buy fruit that is out of season. 
• Shop at multiple stores for what you want at the price you want.
• Buy the generic brands.
• Shop what’s in season. 
• Shop your own pantry first.
• Don’t go to the store hungry, ha! But it’s true!
• Freeze meats that are on sale 
• Avoid pre-packaged items
  • It’s excellent for convenience, but they are usually more expensive. 
• If you buy it – Use it!! 

Tips for Shopping at Dillon Grocery Stores to Save: 

• If you shop at Dillon’s, download the Dillons App, click the “Savings” tab, then “Weekly Ads,” and shop these deals. Select the “Clip” button to add the coupon to your cart or purchase the weekly deals to save. 
• Make sure to sign up for a Dillons Plus Card. It’s Free and will help you save.
• Dillons ads run Wednesday through Tuesday.
• Regular Weekly Ads: These dont require a coupon, but you will need your Plus Card.
• Digital Ads: To get these deals, you need to clip the digital coupon on your app or computer. You can use the coupon up to 5 times per transaction.
• Look for the discount bakery rack. There are always great deals on there. It’s usually donuts or bread that have a few more days until they expire. I just buy the bread and freeze it until you need it.
• Look for the Reduced sign in the meat section. You can usually find some great deals on meats.
• Look for the yellow sticker with ” Reduced” in red to score some great deals.

Great Plains Nature Center Musuem

It’s completely FREE to go through the museum! They also have Nature Education for kids of all ages, including adults. These programs are also FREE. Visit their website for more information. In the museum, you can see the 2,200-gallon aquarium filled with fish life, or learn about the sounds native animals make. You can learn about the history of the prairies, wildlife, and plant life.

Chisholm Creek Park at Great Plains Nature Center

The Walking Trail at Great Plains Nature Center is in Chisholm Creek Park, one of Wichita’s largest parks. It’s on 282 acres and has 2.5 miles of paved trails that cross native and restored prairies, wetlands, ponds, and more. Bikes and pets must stay on the path around the outside of the park but are not allowed on the interior trails. The bicycle path can be accessed from Oliver Street.

Chisholm Creek Park:  

• 125 species of wildflowers
• 38 species of trees and shrubs
• 20 species of mammals
• 160 species of birds
• 21 species of reptiles and amphibians
• 13 species of fish

Fishing Ponds:

Two ponds in the park are available for fishing. A valid Kansas fishing license is required for all who are age 16 and up.

• Island Pond – Artificial lures only, all fish caught must be released. There is no fishing allowed on bridges or other wetland areas of Chisholm Creek Park.
•  Chisholm Lake –Located on the north side of K-96. Please observe posted regulations. (Not on the Great Plains property but close)
