Daniel Negreanu got bad beat out of his fifth bracelet.

This is a big weekend for the WSOP.

So far, the energy has been fairly dead in the Rio. That picked up a little bit yesterday as Daniel Negreanu went for bracelet number five and a number of well-known pros were making runs in events. With the $1,500 NLH event today–we’ll see if the numbers begin to up-tick, and the WSOP starts feeling like the WSOP again.

:: Event #5 ($1,500 PLH) – The highlight event of the day showcased Daniel Negreanu going for bracelet #5. He started play stacked sixth out of nine. With five remaining, Negreanu got his stack all-in with A-Q vs A-J, but got rivered and was eliminated, earning $41,683. The event was won by Nick Jivkov, who earns his first bracelet and $189,818. :: Event #6 ($5,000 NLH Mixed Max) – The starting field of 409 is down to 31. Warwick Mirzikinian ended play as big stack with 467,500. He’s followed by Fabrizio Baldassari with 461,000. John Hennigan (362,500), Joseph Cheong (307,500), Marvin Rettenmaier (266,000), and Brian Rast (230,500) also remain. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #7 ($1,500 Seven Card Stud) – The field of 367 is down to its final table. David Williams is the chip leader with 493,500. He’s followed by Andy Bloch (296,500) and Barry Greenstein (254,000). Caroline Hermesh, a woman, makes it yet another final table with a woman going for a bracelet. :: Event #3 ($3,000 Heads-Up NLH/PLO) – Back in 2006, Leif Force, then known as Jungle Boy, was like a 1.0 version of Daniel Cates, now known as Jungleman. Force grinded up a big bankroll on Bodog, and then folded his way to an eleventh place finish in the Main Event, earning $1,154,527. Since then, Force has had sporadic success, with his best finish a second place at a WPT event last year.

Force though has started off the 2012 WSOP strong, outlasting a tough field and final 8 to win his first bracelet and bank $207,708. He defeated Jason Koon ($128,660) heads-up for the title. Annette Obrestad, a woman, finished eighth for $28,409. Get a profile of Leif here. Get full results here.

:: Event #4 ($1,500 7CS 8oB) – Cory “Slow Rolled Straight Flush on Jennifer Harman” Zeidman captured this one, earning his first bracelet and $201,559. Not winning her first bracelet was Xuan Liu, a woman (6th - $29,985), or Marsha Waggoner, a woman (9th - $12,822), or Linda Johnson, a woman (13th - $8,027). Get a profile of Cory here. :: Event #5 ($1,500 PLH) – This is the marquee event of the day, as Daniel Negreanu goes for elusive bracelet #5. He’ll start the final table in sixth overall with 212,000. Bryan Pellegrino is the big stack, entering final table play with 790,000. He’s followed by Jonathan Aguiar with 552,000. :: Event #6 ($5,000 NLH Mixed Max) – The final event of the day brought in a field of 409, with 112 surviving to Day 2. Joe Tehan, whose name still looks too much like Tehran for our liking, is the overnight chip leader with 219,200. He’s followed by Aaron Jones with 167,100. Recent WPT Championship champ Marvin Rettenmaier is third with 166,500. And OleGSmith, Gavin Smith, is fifth with 138,600. Get full chip counts here.

Could this be the Year of the Woman^TM?

Two years ago, Pre-Black Friday, self-appointed WSOP commish WSOP head Ty Stewart said that the 2010 WSOP would potentially be the Year of the Woman. Then, just like every year from 1972-2009, not one single woman won a bracelet.*

But women are making runs this year. Here’s the latest.

:: Event #2 ($1,500 NLH) – Vanessa Selbst, a woman, was looking to become the first woman since Vanessa Selbst to win a bracelet. She came close, but finished fourth, banking $161,345. Hopefully she spends a good portion of that on booze for her party tomorrow night. The event was won Brent Hanks, who grabs $517,725 and his first bracelet. Get full results here.

:: Event #3 ($3,000 NLH/PLO Heads-Up) – A solid field of 8 remain, including Annette Obrestad, a woman. David Benefield, Jason Koon, Lief Force, and Andy Frankenberger also remain.

:: Event #4 ($1,500 7CS 8oB) – With 23 remaining, Xuan Liu, a woman leads this one. Liu is stacked at 330,500. Also alive is another woman, Linda Johnson, a woman. Johnson has 175,000. Follow the progress and the two ladies compete for a bracelet here.

:: Event #5 ($1,500 PLH) – This event is currently in progress. In brought in a field of 639. They’re just shy of the money now with around 70 remaining. Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, and John “Fuck” Juanda are among the chip leaders. Follow the action here.

Vanessa Selbst is in contention to do what no woman has done since her.

Tuesday was the first “typical” WSOP day, with three major events concurrently running. Updates:

:: Event #2 ($1,500 NLH) – The field is down from 2,101 to 15. Jacob Bazeley is the big stack with 1,291,000. He’s followed by Ryan Schmidt with 1,193,000. In fourth is former bracelet winner JP Kelly with 721,000. Also alive in fifth overall is Vanessa Selbst, a woman who likes women, with 706,000. Vanessa Selbst is looking to become the first woman to win a bracelet since Vanessa Selbst did it in 2008. Phil Hellmuth went deep in this one, but was eliminated in 61st ($7,204). Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #3 ($3,000 NLH/PLO Heads-Up) – A total of 317 entered this first-time event. Matches concluded with 64 remaining. Plenty of notables are still alive, including David Chiu, Justin Bonomo, Annette Obrestad, a woman, Josh Arieh, David Williams, [..........], and of course, Ashkan Razavi. :: Event #4 ($1,500 7CS 8oB) – An impressive 622 entered the final event of the day, with 210 surviving. William Carroll is the chip leader, stacked at 49,100. He’s followed by Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi with 41,500. Also alive, Phil Ivey with just over 10,000. Get full chip counts here.

We're as happy to see the 2012 WSOP get underway as we are to see a new Candice Swanepoel photo shoot.

The 2012 WSOP got underway Sunday.

As is customary, the $500 buy-in Casino Employees event kicked things off. A total of 732 entered, with Chiab “Chip” Saechao banking the $70,859 first place prize. Read more about Event #1 here.

The first open tournament started Monday with Event #2 ($1,500 NLH). An impressive 2,101 entered, creating a first place prize of $517,725. Play wrapped with 239 remaining. A total of 216 get paid.

There are a surprising large number of big names still in the field. Not among them is current chip leader, Sadan Turker, with 158,100. He’s followed by Eli Elezra (155,900).

Other big stacks remaining include but are certainly not limited to Brandon Cantu (130,100), Layne Flack (74,500), John Juanda (60,700), Vanessa Selbst (52,300), Phil Hellmuth (44,600), and Jason Mercier (41,900).

And yes, Phil Ivey did play, but was eliminated.
