Thu 11 Mar – Mon 10 May 2010

Exhibition Opening Reception:

Thu 11 Mar, 6 – 8pm All Welcome

The Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year (IWPOY) 2009 returns to the Café Wall, displaying a breath-taking 50 shortlisted images from last years entries. This years theme; ‘It’s a small world’ is fairly open and includes; macros, close-ups, travel landscapes and locations (small world distances), small objects, flowers, animals or anything that a photographer would consider relates to this theme.

Once again, the many hundreds of entries have allowed IWPOY to view the diverse range of both amateur and professional photographers we have here on the Isle of Wight. Wildlife TV Presenter Chris Packham and former Fleet Street photographer and freelance writer Bob Aylott kindly agreed to assist with the judging.

Three winning entries selected by the judges in November 2009 were; David Vennings from Wellow scooping the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year 2009 Award with ‘Hey Good Looking’. Second place went to Ian Scovell with ‘Solitude in a small world’ and third place secured by Jason Swain with ‘Rise Above Plastics – it all ends up somewhere’.

There were some great wildlife-themed prizes up for grabs kindly donated by the National Trust, Wildlife Trust and Gift to Nature. The winners received large Canvas Prints of their winning images. In addition, the overall winner received a copy of Bob Aylott’s new book “Six Days That Rocked the World” – a story in photographs of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

Following the success of previous IWPOY Competitions, the Isle of Wight Biodiversity Partnership this year came on-board to support an extra competition category encouraging budding photographers to get intimate with wildlife and bring the natural world that little bit closer to home. The theme was ‘It’s a very small world – Go Wild on Wight’ which aimed to inspire photographers to get out and about across the Isle of Wight, the emphasis being to know your home patch.

The ‘It’s a very small world – Go Wild on Wight’ category winner was Gay Farmer for her exquisite study of a ‘Drangonfly’. This was closely followed by Stuart Shore with ‘Red Squirrel’ and Paul Blackley with ‘Male Barn Owl’.

Along with these winning images, all of the fifty shortlisted entries from the main IWPOY category and Go Wild on Wight winners will be exhibited at Quay Arts and touring to other venues throughout 2010. This will further enable more people to recognise the quality and the skills of Island Photographers.

The recession is ‘officially’ over and the economy has recorded 0.1 % growth. Business confidence is reported to be growing, but there is still a long way to go for recovery. Now is the time to ensure your business is ready and can manage the expected upcoming growth.

Deborah Wyatt, Business Link Director provides some top tips for local businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Finance – Ensure your cash is flowing

Your overdraft – how long is it for, what are the interest rate and charges? Evaluate if this is the best way to finance your cash flow. Banks will look to cut overdrafts where they can.

Don’t let other businesses put your cash flow in jeopardy. Watch out for unusual buying patterns as they may be having problems with suppliers elsewhere.

Reduce your customer payment terms to 10 days.

Margins – focus on profit not just your turnover

Review your energy bills and look to switch suppliers to save money.

Highlight where savings can be made with your suppliers

Planning – is your Business Plan fit for purpose?

Focus on what you want to achieve in the next 12 months.

Contact Business Link to arrange a FREE Business Review

Keep an eye on invitations to tender. The public sector and, increasingly the private sector, demand companies demonstrate commitment to quality, equality, health and safety and the environment, so prepare policies in these areas prior to a bid.

Set measurable goals for the coming month

Customers and markets- Having an organised marketing plan will help focus your business into recovery and growth

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate to your existing and lapsed customers

Define your unique selling point – communicate key benefits and features.

Tell your existing customers about new products and services.

Cost effective marketing –In tough times, it’s tempting to cut your marketing activity, however, it’s proven that those who invest in marketing during hard times emerge the strongest when good times return, so use your creativity to implement low cost marketing techniques.

Your online profile – ensure your website is working for you and its easy for your customers to do business with you.

Upload new content regularly, give customers a reason to return to your site

Media coverage – ensure your local media contacts are aware of your successes

Branding – Your brand creates an identity and personality for your business. Be consistent and ensure your key message and contact information is on all communications.

Network – Attend events, seminars and trade shows. Take business cards and make sure you follow up useful contacts with an email, letter or phone call and add them to your database.

People and skills

Economic instability can affect employee morale. Effective management is essential to promote a positive outlook and steer a business through difficult times.

Ask employees for their ideas on cost-cutting in their department

Praise employees for a task well done

Contact Train to Gain to see how you can develop your staff and increase confidence. Companies that don’t train staff are 2.5 times more likely to fail

Finally, be ecologically-friendly. This can strengthen your brand and credentials as more and more customers want to deal with businesses that are environmentally responsible.

If you would like to discuss any of these areas, contact Business Link for a free, impartial review of your business.

The Isle of Wight Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and representatives of the Isle of Wight Council have met to discuss issues vital to small businesses on the Island. This was the second in a series of scheduled meetings. The FSB wants regular consultation with the Council to ensure that the views of its 970 island members are heard.

The meeting was held between Caryn March and Norman Arnold, FSB’s Branch Chair and Vice-Chair, and Councillor George Brown and John Metcalfe, Deputy Director, Economic, Tourism and Leisure, from Isle of Wight Council.

Caryn March said: “With the council budget a main concern, local issues were discussed including small business rate relief, the use of LABGI (business growth initiative) funding, council procurement and positively working with local businesses, the improved speed of council payments and the ever-topical issue of car parking costs.”

“The general feeling of the meeting was that despite the current downturn in economic activity on the island, the council is looking at viable options to support business activity. The FSB is very keen to maintain regular contact with the Economic Development team to ensure that the small business view is constantly heard, and that implications of policies for FSB members and all other small businesses are fully considered when decisions are being made,” added Caryn March.

Councillor George Brown, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy, Tourism, Leisure and Planning, said: “the Council is committed to improving the overall economic well being of the Island and is pleased to be able to work with the FSB for the benefit of all Island businesses.”

Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, recently joined celebrity actress Jenny Seagrove and Totland resident Chris Whitehouse to urge the Prime Minister to block a bid by the EU to ban thousands of vitamin & mineral food supplements, used safely in the UK for decades.

As they launched the Time Is Running Out campaign, campaign group Consumers for Health Choice unveiled thousands of posters in British High Streets, and a million postcards to lobby MPs.

Andrew Turner insisted :

“The EU Food Supplements Directive will severely restrict consumer choice. This is a prime example of Europe meddling needlessly in our affairs. Nobody is suggesting that these vitamin and mineral products are unsafe. Many people have taken them for years and rely on them for all sorts of things. I fear that if this goes ahead there will be health store closures and job losses. Hundreds of Islanders have contacted me about this issue in recent years and I will continue to fight for them to keep the right to take the supplements they want.”

The EU is poised to ban vitamins and supplements at anything more than meaningless doses; Britain’s chemists, supermarkets, and healthfood shops will be cleared of all other products by 31st December. At the moment, higher-dose supplements, all within proven safe limits, are taken by consumers helping stave off everything from general tiredness, SAD syndrome and coughs & colds to PMT and restless legs.

A commitment to keep supplements available and to fight the Brussels bureaucrats was made in 2005, yet almost five years later the Government has failed to implement its own policy.

Chris Whitehouse, Director of Strategy for CHC, the group behind the highly successful Save-Our-Supplements campaign said:

“We do feel very let down. The Food Standards Agency was instructed to fight our corner in Brussels; they accept that our supplements are safe – yet they have failed to speak up for British people. As things stand, doses of all vitamins and all minerals could be reduced to meaningless amounts to appease countries such as France and Germany who wish to control the market. Such an outcome would be catastrophic.

“The official view of EU regulators remains that the destruction of the British industry is an acceptable price to pay for harmonizing the market across all Member Stares. That is outrageous yet our Government is allowing it to happen. Gordon’s Government should wake up, keep its promises and block this burdensome and meddlesome legislation. We will make this a General Election issue; perhaps that will help concentrate their minds.”

“Celebrating excellence

Each year we explore the English A level and GCSE exam data looking for schools where the results in individual subjects shout out that here is some really special teaching – and then we give the best of them awards.

The Biology teacher who gained this award is Mrs Glynis Bates, who taught at Upper Chine before joining Priory School when it was founded in 1993. She is Head of Science and was appointed Head of the Senior School earlier this year, and will also be teaching A Level Biology from September 2010.

Priory School is the ONLY island school to be awarded in 2009 by the Good Schools Guide for mainstream GCSE subjects; an accolade not just for the school but also for the island as a whole. Call 01983 861222 to discuss or to arrange a visit.

Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, has called on the Government to review the level of regulation for the Island’s NHS Primary Care Trust. He brought the issue to the attention of the Minister of State for Health, Michael O’Brien MP, in a debate yesterday in Westminster Hall. The Island’s PCT is unique in that it combines both commissioning and providing functions, with all service providers falling under the remit of the Isle of Wight NHS PCT. In the Care Quality Commission’s 2009 annual health check, the Isle of Wight was one of only three PCT’s in the country to receive an ‘excellent’ quality rating. However, national monitoring of standards does not take into account the unified nature of the organisation, and instead scrutinises each part of the whole separately. This greatly inflates the number of targets and inspections and places a regulatory burden on the Island’s PCT.

Mr Turner said

“This is a case of national priorities getting in the way of effectively responding to local needs and circumstances. The unique nature of the Island’s PCT has simply not been recognised in the national inspection regime and has led to disproportionate regulation. The Islands PCT has up to 70 external visits from 20 different regulators. On top of this, there are 28 existing and 61 new national priority targets to achieve. No other trust or PCT is subject to such intervention and bureaucracy. This takes time away from healthcare professionals – time which could be better spent on satisfying patients needs. I have pressed the Government to review whether such a level of monitoring is necessary for an organisation which exists outside the organisational norm – particularly in light of the PCT receiving an ‘excellent’ quality rating in the CQC’s annual health check.”

Mr Turner added:

“What is necessary is a more flexible approach. Over and over again, we see the PCT contorting to fit itself into the inspection regime, when it is the system itself which should adjust and adapt to the PCT’s circumstances. The Minister indicated that the CQC will be looking at their ‘gatekeeping rule’ to minimise the disruption from inspections. I also raised financial issues with the Minister. The CQC will require all service providers to register by October this year. But from the first of April 2011, there will be an annual fee for registration. As the Isle of Wight PCT is an amalgamation of many local healthcare providers, this could have acute financial circumstances. I asked the Minister today to ensure that the Isle of Wight PCT will be charged a proportionate amount in light of the services provided and I will continue to press the Government on this matter.”

The Ellen MacArthur Trust is a charity based on the IOW working with young people between 8 and 24, helping to rebuild their confidence after treatment for cancer and leukaemia.

Established in 2003 by world-renowned yachtswoman and IOW resident Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Trust now welcomes young people from hospitals all over the country to participate in short sailing trips, initially around the IOW. These young people have often spent long periods of their childhood in hospital, missing out on school and isolated from their peer group. The trips give them a chance to regain their independence and take control of their lives again, meeting others who understand what they’ve been through. We aim to rebuild the confidence lost during treatment, and simply have fun, with sailing being the perfect catalyst.

The young people sleep and eat on board, and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of crew life, from helming the yacht, to washing up, with the emphasis on teamwork. The sailing is mixed with shore-based activities and the Trust is supported by local businesses and organizations including UKSA, Liz Earle, Plaza Ice Creams, Yarmouth Lifeboat, Red Funnel and Solent Yacht Club, helping to make sure all the young people have a great time.

They can then return each year, to sailing regattas, a residential dinghy week in Essex, or for longer cruising. In 2009 we sailed Round Britain, with 74 young people crewing on one of 16 separate legs. Trust crews sailed under London’s famous Tower Bridge, were welcomed into Belfast by the Lady Mayor, and saw dolphins and whales. The yacht returned to Cowes in September at the end of a truly inspirational voyage!
Business Link has launched a new online resource to help farmers and growers understand farming regulations, and manage the daily challenges of running a successful farming business.

www.businesslink.gov.uk/southeast/farming is a dedicated new section on the Business Link website, which provides farmers in Hampshire and Isle of Wight with practical information and guidance to help them focus their planning, apply best practice and understand government requirements, whatever type of farm they have.

The launch coincides with the National Farmers’ Union Annual Conference in Birmingham, from 23 to 24 February 2010. The new farming section brings 86 guides together on one website. They will be updated regularly to ensure that farmers can quickly and easily keep up to date with industry and regulation changes.

This new information is divided into the following sub-sections:

Running your farm business

Funding, schemes and grants

Protecting farm environments

Livestock

Crops, horticulture and plant health

Organic farming

.

Business Link’s Deborah Wyatt says, ‘We are delighted to offer this new service to the farming industry. Farmers and agricultural workers will be able to access a wide range of business information and support in one place, which will save them a great deal of time and money.

‘We developed the new farming content by working closely with all the relevant government departments and agencies, and with farmers themselves. We hope that it will quickly become an essential resource for farmers across England.’

The farming section also links to general topics to include:

Employing people

Taxes, returns and payroll

Health, safety, and premises

Environment and efficiency

For more information, please visit www.businesslink.gov.uk/southeast/farming to find out Business Link could help your farming business and identify opportunities for future growth or call our customer services team on 0845 600 9 006.

I’ve been living on the Island for over 30 years and I’ve seen some changes.

Steve and Ruth (my brother and his wife) opened up a small shop in Lake (if anyone remembers it was the old Buckett’s Train shop) in 1995. They started out with wet weather clothing and a few camping bits and pieces. They realised that the shop wasn’t big enough so they moved to Shanklin where they expanded into more clothing, walking boots, stoves, lights, army surplus and more.

The shop was at bursting point so they opened up a unit at Lake Industrial Way and introduced more camping and caravan equipment – from tents, tables, air-beds to caravan ramps, taps, water pumps and much more.

Last October we moved our camping and caravan equipment from Lake Industrial Way to the bottom of Sandown, in College Close (past Wight Motors). Here we have more storage and a much bigger shop. We are in the process of planning our new outside tent display which will be available for our customers to view from Easter. We will also be expanding our range of furniture and caravan spares.

Our shop in Shanklin, now in it’s 10th year, has a selection of outdoor clothing, walking boots, rucksacks, Army Surplus and survival gear. We will also be having a great selection of Weird Fish clothing coming in for the Spring.

In 2007 we invested in a brand new website and now we are in the process of developing it to feature all the stock – www.goodyears.co.uk. We aim to get orders out within 48 hours of being paid for (many are dispatched within 24 hours). We only charge £4.95 for delivery, however many items you order. You can even sign up for our newsletter with all special offers.

At the moment we have a sale of tents and sleeping bags, so come and pay us a visit and have a look….

I love my job and the nice people that come into Goodyears Outdoors, we are here to help people with big or small problems and if we can’t help we might even know of someone that can.

If you live on the Island or you are on holiday why not come and pay us a visit…

Or if you can’t manage to visit us you can contact us by phone – College Close on 01983 408181 or Shanklin on 01983 861212 or on the above website. Anne.

The Royal Navy’s two newest warships are set to be dazzling double act as the newest naval technology features alongside the historic prowess of the naval fleet of the past, including HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860, at this summer’s Navy Days event at Portsmouth Naval Base and Historic Dockyard.

The new formidable Type 45 destroyers HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless are among the most powerful warships in the world and for the first time together they will open their hatches to the public for the three-day event, which runs Friday 30th July – Sunday 1st August.

Navy Days 2010 promises to be one of the most popular events on the South Coast this summer, featuring serving warships of the Royal Navy, ships of foreign navies, thrilling naval displays, historical re-enactments and the world-class attractions of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Other ships on display will be two Type 23 Frigates, one of the mainstay ships of the modern surface fleet. The public will also get a rare chance to see specialist Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Argus – an aviation training and casualty receiving ship. Her hospital facility includes four operating theatre tables, ten intensive care beds, 20 high-dependency beds and 70 general ward beds. Argus is one of few ships in the world to have a CT scanner and is similar to RFA Largs Bay which is currently helping the aid effort in Haiti.

Captain Paul Lemkes, Deputy Naval Base Commander, said: “Navy Days is a fantastic opportunity for the Royal Navy to be able to show the public, close up, the capabilities it contributes to UK Defence. I am particularly delighted that we are planning to have two Type 45 destroyers on show in their home port so that visitors will be able to see how the Royal Navy is maintaining its place at the forefront of maritime operations with this cutting edge class of warship.

“I am sure that RFA Argus will be a big hit with visitors too. She is a one-off ship with a very special capability and does not often get the chance to have the public on board.”

For the adventurous and active visitor there is the chance to see if they have the skills to join the senior service on challenging displays, simulators and climbing tower in Action Stations. Whilst there, they can also see Carrier Strike, an interactive exhibition detailing the aircraft carriers of the future.

This spectacular event ensures that there is always something going on around every corner from awe-amazing military displays of the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter team and the Royal Marines Display Team, to displays of strength, courage and teamwork from the Field Gun Crews of HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood, army parachute teams, motorcycle displays and of course the military band.

Robert Bruce, Chief Executive of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which is co-hosting the event with the Naval Base, added: “Navy Days 2010 will be a brilliant event for all ages, showcasing the Navy’s present and future capabilities including its people and, especially at Portsmouth, its heritage too. There’s nowhere else in the country that you can see this great mix and we’re expecting it to be the highlight of this summer on the south coast.”

Over 800 years of naval history will be brought to life at every turn with historical re-enactment displays, a cast of hundreds of costumed characters and the welcoming doors of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Mary Rose Museum and HMS Warrior 1860 will open wide to guarantee a fantastic, fun-filled day out for all the family!

Further information, including ticket details, is available from the Navy Days website – www.navydaysuk.co.uk
